A Chat With the Makers of Danish Sex Comedy Klown (Or: Frank and Casper Are Not Pedophiles)

Danish comedy duo Casper Christensen and Frank Hvam would like you to know they are not pedophiles. Not that accusations of creative indecency would stop them from toying with the line of good taste, as they do to hilarious effect in the R-rated Danish sex comedy Klown .   The  Curb Your Enthusiasm -style road trip comedy, which they wrote and co-star in, happens to be the funniest, most outrageous film of the year, and it   has already been acquired for American remake by Todd Phillips and Danny McBride. Klown debuted in New York, Los Angeles, and Austin over the weekend, stirring up a decent opening as it looks to expand to 13 additional markets in the coming weeks. Back home in Denmark, it’s already made $12.3 million; nearly 20 percent of the population reportedly watched it upon release in 2010. That’s a fantastic start for a buddy comedy chock full of explicit sexual gags, nudity, child endangerment and wanton irresponsibility galore — a NSFW comedy of discomfort. After floating down the the Guadalupe River outside of Austin, Texas last month for The Alamo Drafthouse’s wonderfully meta Rolling Roadshow screening series, Christensen and Hvam spoke with Movieline about the planned American remake, their scripting process, and their tricks for pushing the envelope. For instance, why you can’t pop a joke too early (“What would top ejaculating in a child’s face? It’s impossible”), and the gag from their Klown series that rivals the worst transgressions of Klown the Movie. Also: What is cinematic infant terrible Lars Von Trier (whose Zentropa outfit co-produced Klown , and whose Nazi-referencing Cannes controversy the duo dismiss as “a stand-up comedian at an open mic”) really like? You two had a successful run with Klown the TV show, but at what point did you crack the right way to make it into a film? Casper Christensen: We did six seasons, and Frank and I wrote all the episodes. It’s a lot of work. It’s a joyride, it’s a lot of fun, but sometimes in life you’ve got to just come up for fresh air. So after six seasons we just took a break from each other — Frank went on a stand-up comedy tour, I did television, and it felt good just to let go of the Klown universe for a while. But we always had ambitions to write a movie. We got together and said, ‘Let’s write this movie.’ I wanted to get back into Klown because the character was so much fun to act, and we knew the characters so well, that we thought it might be a good idea for the first movie that we wrote, to know something. It would be easier for us. So I convinced Frank that it could be a good idea to write Klown . Frank Hvam: It was a good idea. I have no regrets about that movie. CC: But we started out bouncing around ideas for a completely different movie before we did this one. How different was that concept? FH: It’s always based on some buddy stuff, because that’s our relationship — we are friends in real life. We have this comic dynamic that we know, and we use that. CC: We talked about setting it during the second World War. FH: Because we would probably fail totally in a war situation. CC: We talked a lot about war. FH: On which side would we be? [Laughs] CC: How would we be if we were soldiers? Would we still be friends? Who would really be the hero between the two of us? FH: Every time we see a war movie in Denmark it’s about Danish heroes, and we would like to tell a story about Danish assholes. CC: During the second World War. Maybe you can use that in a Klown follow-up. Do you already have an idea in mind for your next movie? CC: Oh, we have a plan! We’re going to start writing in January. It might be a Klown movie, but it might be something completely different. One of things Klown the film does well is give freshness to a concept that isn’t necessarily unique – the road trip set-up, for example. If you were to give comedy writing tips based on your experience writing Klown, where would you start? CC: You’ve got to have a good story, a story that means something to yourself. Fatherhood is interesting for Frank and I — we’re both fathers, spent a lot of time talking about it, and living not the everyday life, we live a different life than most people in Denmark so of course we talk about things like, what kind of father figure are we? That was most important for us — we had a good story, and we had something we wanted to talk about. CC: Once a story is in place, you’ve got to do good comedy on top of it. You’ve just got to refresh your thoughts — I’ve never seen this, this might be fun — and just believe in it. We weren’t trying to please anybody when we made the movie. We’re not going to go, ‘People might like canoeing.’ Frank and I liked the concept of canoeing, that’s why we did it. FH: Write for yourself. That’s a very important thing, otherwise you get confused. CC: Six seasons on television – there were a lot of characters that people liked and loved from the series that aren’t in the movie. We might disappoint people, but then what? We don’t care. It’s about what we think is important. So there are a lot of good characters that aren’t in the movie. Nudity, especially in R-rated comedy these days and especially involving male genitalia, is used often for shock value. How strategic do you have to be in using it at just the right moment, and for maximum effect? CC: When we wrote it we wanted to make sure one of the biggest laughs was going to be at the end of the movie, because it seemed downhill from there. FH: We also had to make sure it didn’t ruin the story. If we have something explosive and we can’t get on the horse again – our story horse – then it wasn’t worth it. CC: That’s why we don’t show the picture right after we take the picture. We put it late in the movie but early enough that you kind of have forgotten we took the picture. That’s when people go, ‘Oh!’ when Frank goes, “I’ve got Casper’s phone right here.” They’re suddenly reminded. FH: We were discussing having Bo in the bed having a pearl necklace instead of Frank’s mother in law. That would have been fun, but it would have destroyed the story because it would have been impossible for Frank and Bo to get on that canoe trip after that. CC: And what would top it? What would top ejaculating in a child’s face? It’s impossible. FH: Then it’s a skit. CC: No, then it’s illegal! Do you think American audiences will be more shocked by how far Klown goes in the pursuit of humor than audiences back home were? FH: It was a shocking movie at home, too. CC: Let’s not kid ourselves – it’s way too much, even in Denmark. Denmark doesn’t just have the coolest audience in the world, then? CC: Oh, no – that’s why you laugh, because it’s too much. FH: It’s ok that people are a little bit shocked. Otherwise we wouldn’t have a movie! CC: Some scenes get more laughs over here, though; the homosexual themes are much more taboo. FH: The home robbery scene is also a little more [taboo] because running away from a child during a robbery here in the U.S. is a death scene — in Denmark it’s bad, but it’s not that bad because the robbers are probably not armed. Thieves are nicer back home? CC: They’re still thieves! Don’t kid yourself. It’s dangerous, but not that many people have guns so it’s not that dangerous. There’s also a point when Frank is teaching Bo to swim and there’s a beautiful shot of the two characters, the lake is in front of them and the sun is going down, they’re both drying themselves off, and Frank goes, “Let me see that penis… it’s not that small.” It’s funny but it’s a beautiful scene, it’s a loving scene – it’s got feelings in it! In Denmark people laughed, they giggled, but over here it’s like [guffaws] they LAUGH. A grown man looking at a boy’s penis! But in Denmark it’s a beautiful thing. Why bring Klown to Zentropa? Was Lars Von Trier’s involvement part of the appeal? FH: He wasn’t that much involved, but we came to Zentropa because of Lars von Trier. We wanted to get some of the best film workers on our project and we wanted to get close to Lars because he’s a super cool guy. He involved himself in a little bit of the editing at the start. He wrote an episode, he acted in an episode, and he is good at forcing us to push the envelope. He really wants things to go wild, and if you’re close to Lars you just want to impress him. He’s cultivated quite the reputation for himself, and not just through films. CC: Once you get to know him he’s a good guy! He’s got a good sense of humor, he’s a little bit crazy – but in a good way. I’ve been to his house having dinner with his children and my children and it’s all normal… but then suddenly Lars picks up a rifle at the dinner party, stuff like that. Sometimes taking his shirt off during dinner. He wants to see what happens now – what if I did this? And that’s interesting to be around. FH: Basically, he’s just a nice guy. Do you think his detractors took his Cannes comments a little too seriously? FH: We were surprised. We couldn’t see that he’d made any mistake at that press conference. He was just a comedian in an open mic situation – CC: And somebody misunderstood his joke. Lars von Trier as stand-up comedian – sounds about right. CC: That’s what he is! He’s trying out material. FH: We have tried that too. People sometimes are not offended in their heart, but they can use a matter to promote their own cause, and then they start a war just to show who they are. A Chat With the Makers of Danish Sex Comedy Klown (Or: Frank and Casper Are Not Pedophiles)

Peter Cullen — The Voice of Optimus Prime — On Saving Mankind Through The Power of Transformers

Famed voice actor Peter Cullen still remembers the feeling of surprise he had at his first fan convention when he realized how much characters like Optimus Prime, whom he voiced throughout the Transformers series and films, meant to fans. In an extended chat at Comic-Con , Cullen revealed how a pre-audition chat with his Vietnam veteran brother inspired his take on the Transformers hero and how, years later, he’s working with NASA and HASBRO to foster interest in science, math, and space in the latest generation of young fans. (Scroll down for the full 30-minute chat and let your nerd hearts melt, people.) Movieline correspondent Grace Randolph was on hand at Comic-Con to speak with Cullen, whose heartfelt discussion of his work on Transformers , G.I. Joe , and other seminal cartoons of the ’80s can be seen in its entirety below. “I based the character on my own brother, Larry Cullen,” recalled the voice acting legend of the day he headed to audition for Transformers . “Larry was a Marine Corp officer in Vietnam, he was a wounded medal recipient – he had two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star – and we lived together in Burbank, California.” “You’ve got to understand that Larry is six inches taller, he’s got a deeper voice, and he’s probably the most honest, truthful, gentle, understanding, strong guy I ever known,” he continued. “He was my hero. I said, ‘I’m going to audition for a truck.’ He said, ‘What a way to make a living.’ I said, ‘But Larry, he’s a hero.'” “He says, ‘Interesting – well, Peter, be a real hero. Don’t be one of those Hollywood prototypes, be real. Be strong enough to be gentle, don’t be yelling and screaming all the time. That’s my advice, Peter – take it or leave it.'” His brother’s advice informed Cullen’s audition for Optimus Prime, and the rest is history. “Larry just jumped off the page when I started reading him,” he remembered, “and inside, spiritually, I felt something really connect. I had a feeling. I said, this is going to work. This is good. Nobody’s ever heard anything like this before. Nobody’s done it like this before. I left that audition and I said to myself, ‘If I don’t get this, there’s something wrong in the world.’ Cullen, who reprised the role of Optimus Prime on The Hub’s Emmy-winning Transformers: Prime series and says he saw himself as a sort of latchkey father figure to his young fans throughout the years, is working with HASBRO, The Hub, and NASA to encourage interest in the sciences and space in youngsters. The effort “will benefit the children of this country and around the world, to develop their enthusiasm for space, whether it’s in fiction or whether it’s in fact, science, technology, math, medicine – everything that’s connected with space. “If Optimus Prime can stir up enthusiasm in some form of interest that will benefit mankind by creating that enthusiasm to venture somewhere above and beyond our earth, I think Prime should.” Watch the full chat with Peter Cullen below. My name is Mikaela, I’m 15, and I live in Pennsylvania….

My name is Mikaela, I’m 15, and I live in Pennsylvania. I’ve been a belieber since 2009, when I first discovered Justin and his music. After two and a half years, I finally had my own Bieber experience. Back in 2011, two of my friends won fan passes from the Today Show to see Justin on November 23 rd . My friend Ashley brought me, and my friend Kristen brought her dad. We all went together, and stood in the rain for 12 hours. The fan passes ended up not really doing anything. We were in the back and we couldn’t see anything besides umbrellas and posters. But we could still hear him, and that’s really all that mattered. Anyway, when we got back, Kristen’s dad emailed the Today Show to tell them what happened and just wanted to see if they could make it up to us somehow. Long story short, they emailed back, invited Kristen and one guest to a concert of her choice to be directly in front of the stage, and we did just that . We had doubts about it for a while, but when we got to New York, one of the workers told us where to wait for her when she got done handing out the fan passes. When she was done, she brought me, Kristen, and like 7-10 other beliebers through the MSNBC building and to the plaza. We were literally in the best spot possible. It was still dark when we got there and the dancers started to run through their dances and everything. Scooter came out and was telling all of us that we couldn’t grab Justin because it could mess up the performance. As he was walking back, he gave me a high five. I started freaking out. Scooter means a lot to me, and I couldn’t believe he was just in front of me. Justin came out for sound check once it got a little brighter and it was flawless. There weren’t cameras filming yet, so he paid a lot of attention to us. I’m pretty sure we were the first fans he looked at when he came out. It was such a good feeling to know that he knows I exist. He ran through his songs, and then went back inside. A few hours later, the show was starting, and Justin was coming back out. He sang Boyfriend first. He killed it, of course. He touched our hands almost every time he walked past us. It was incredible. Next, he sang Baby. Then, As Long As You Love Me. We knew all the words already and it was so much fun. Then, the most amazing thing that could have happened that day, happened.  It was in between As Long As You Love Me and All Around The World, and Justin was near the back of the stage. I saw him looking towards us, so I just kind of waved at him to come over to us , not expecting at all that he was even looking at me. But he was, because  he walked right over to me, and was like, “Do you, you want me to..” and then he took my camera and took a picture of us. HE TOOK A PICTURE OF US. ME AND HIM. TOGETHER. And best of all, HE took it. Not me, him. That moment right there, honestly, I can’t even put into words how much that meant to me. He made my entire life . During the show, I called my mom to tell her what happened, but it was too loud and she couldn’t hear me. Right after I said it out loud that he took a picture of us, I immediately starting balling my eyes out. It was too good to be true. My inspiration, my idol, my hero, my everything, just noticed me and took the time to take a picture with me. Wow, it was perfect. I think the best part is, that it was totally unexpected. I didn’t even think he was even looking at me, let alone that he would come over and take a picture of us. The whole day was hands down, the best day of my life. I am forever grateful. Justin, if you ever read this, I just want to thank you. Not just for what happened at the Today Show, but for everything. You inspire me each and every day and you get me through so much. I LOVE YOU. I hope one day I can tell you how much you mean to me in person. Never say never, right? And to everyone reading this, know that dreams really do come true. June 15 th  is my proof.   -@supitsmikaela See the original post here: My name is Mikaela, I’m 15, and I live in Pennsylvania….

My 2 friends and I went into the city on a Monday after Justin…

My 2 friends and I went into the city on a Monday after Justin tweeted that the music store J&R was giving out more wristbands for his CD signing the next day. We didn’t really expect to get anything because he had tweeted about it and originally you had to go on Friday and pre-order Believe. We got to J&R, and there was legit ONE person there, so we preordered Believe, got wristbands and screamed/cried/went insane. The next day we got on line at like 10:30 even though the signing was supposed to start at 2pm. The line went on FOREVER behind us and we waited for what felt like forever. When I first saw Justin as I first walked in, I almost fainted. He looked so perfect and unreal. He looked like he was glowing and kind of like a vampire but like a good vampire (not one that would kill your family). I saw Kenny and he looked like he’d rather be sleeping lol the usual. I also saw Mike Lerner and Ryan Good . Omg it was so amazing it was so much better than the 1D signing that I went to in March because the security was so nice and you could take a pic with Justin if you were quick and everyone got a little bit of time to talk to him and he is so incredibly nice and FLAWLESS .  OMG then we found out that my dad was able to get us into “BieberLive” at MTV (which if you live under a rock was the JB special on MTV) My dad knows people at MTV and we thought we had to be 18 but turns out we were able to get in! We were in the audience and on TV. He sang a song and his voice was perfection. During a commercial I was like, “Justin what’s in your back pocket, can I have it!?!?” talking about the little gold rag/handkerchief thing sticking out of his back pocket (He has a lot of them that match his other outfits and stuff ) Everyone laughed and he was like, “No!!!” in this really funny, cute voice that was like fake-hurt. He was wearing this diamond whistle necklace and my friend goes (during a commercial) “I like your necklace!!” and he turns around and goes, “I like YOU.”  We also all got free copies of Believe and free bottles of his new perfume Girlfriend. He was so sweet he said, “Wait before I go I want to take a picture with every section of the room” so he took one and MY SECTION WAS THE ONLY ONE MTV TWEETED AND HE RETWEETED IT! At one point during his performance of “Die in Your Arms,” he stopped singing and let us sing. We were so horrible and off key that he laughed and then started singing again. He was just amazing, sweet, caring and funny.  I’ve waited two years for this to happen and OMG, it was the best day of my life. -Sydney @wuddupbieber Continued here: My 2 friends and I went into the city on a Monday after Justin…

Green Lantern: Get To Know DC Comics’ New Gay Icon

‘Earth 2’ writer James Robinson tells MTV that Alan Scott, returning to DC Universe as a gay man, is ‘proud of who he is on every level.’ By Josh Wigler Green Lantern Photo: DC Comics The original Green Lantern, Alan Scott , is back in the DC Universe for the first time since last year’s companywide reboot. He’s courageous, charismatic and powerful, the same hero fans have loved and adored for decades, with just a few notable modifications — the most controversial of which involves his sexuality. DC Comics announced Friday (June 1) that Scott has been reimagined as a gay man, marking a significant change to the hero who has been around since the 1940s. His sexuality will be revealed in the pages of writer James Robinson’s “Earth 2” #2, and ahead of that, the scribe has been making the rounds, speaking with outlets all about the new Green Lantern. For those of you just tuning in, here are five things you need to know about DC’s newest gay icon: Like Son, Like Father Robinson revealed to MTV Geek that Scott’s new sexuality was partly inspired by the character’s gay son, Obsidian, who no longer exists in the rebooted DCU. “The only thing that bothered me about rebooting the character and making him younger again was that we lost his son Obsidian, who was gay — the original version, obviously, when he was an older man, with a son,” Robinson said about creating the new Green Lantern. “And then, with that in mind, I thought, ‘Well, why not make Alan Scott gay. Why not make the leader of the Justice Society gay?’ It worked on every level. I suggested it to [DC Comics co-publisher] Dan DiDio, and to be fair to Dan, there wasn’t a moment’s hesitation. He said, ‘Yeah, great, great idea.’ ” Original Green Lantern Is Gay, DC Announces Fighting for Acceptance Scott is certainly one of the more prominent gay characters in the DC Comics catalog, and even though many fans are accepting him with open arms, he’ll have his fair share of social hurtles to overcome. “One of the unfortunate things about the United States is that some states are less willing to [let] people have their personal freedoms,” Robinson told Geek. “So, in ‘Earth 2,’ some of those things are obstacles a gay person might face. But Alan Scott is a force of nature, so he would never let that stand in his way. He’s proud of who he is on every level.” Alan Scott, Media Mogul Speaking of every level, there are many layers to the new Alan Scott beyond his sexuality. One of the most important elements to the rejiggered character is that he’s in charge of a major media empire, for instance. “He’s a giant of the media industry,” the writer said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly . “By getting involved in communication, the news, and the Internet, he’s become a billionaire. He’s kind of a cross between Mark Zuckerberg and David Geffen. The original Alan Scott owned a radio station in the ’40s and ’50s, so he was a media giant then. He was this bold, heroic, brave man who took control, who would risk his life for you and be this emerald knight that was always there to protect the world.” James Robinson Speaks With MTV Geek About Green Lantern’s Sexuality An A-List Superhero Scott isn’t just a media mogul or a solo-operating superhero, either: The Green Lantern of “Earth 2” is a leader of men — specifically, the Justice Society. “He will be very much the leader of the Justice Society and a figurehead,” Robinson said in an interview with the Huffington Post . “Often, I think, gay characters, with the exception of Batwoman, are part of a team but are often aside, somewhat. Alan’s going to be at the forefront of this team, leading it, being someone that is loved and admired by the people of Earth 2. So that’s a subtle difference that I will be adding: trying to not just present a positive gay role model but someone that is a type-A superhero.” He’s Not Alone One of Robinson’s major goals for “Earth 2” is to present a cast that’s as diverse as humanly possible. To that end, the writer promised that Scott isn’t the only homosexual character in the comic. “There is another character down the line, but that character won’t be appearing for some time, so it’s probably a bit too early to talk about that,” he told the Advocate . “But this book will definitely have a diverse cast. Alan Scott won’t be the only gay character in ‘Earth 2’ — I promise you that.” Tell us what you think of the new Green Lantern in the comments section!

VIDEO: Ryan Gosling’s Latest Heroism Takes Him to Congo

After breaking up street fights and saving British journalists from oncoming New York taxicab s, it’s time for Ryan Gosling to take his hero act global. The actor has teamed with activist/author John Prendergast to further raise awareness of the ongoing human rights crisis in Congo, helping produce a series of videos documenting “amazing lives in a place the world has left for dead.” And perhaps the best part, according to Gosling and Prendergast? “[W]e’re not in it.” The actor and activist share the background today at Huffington Post : On our second trip together to Africa last Thanksgiving, we decided to go to the place where the deadliest war in the world was occurring: the Congo. The entire time we were there, we traveled with an extraordinary Congolese guy named Fidel Bafilemba. His video profile is the first in a new video series being launched by the Enough Project, called I Am Congo . Most of the stories we hear about Congo are of rape, conflict, and exploitation. Those stories are real and we saw plenty of evidence of them. But that’s not the whole story of Congo. Watching our friend Fidel’s video profile helps expand the story of Congo beyond its pain, and highlights what Congolese people all over are doing to create a better future for their country. Enjoy said video profile below, and check out more from I Am Congo here . [ Huffington Post ]
