‘I’m gonna get superstar records on there,’ he tells Mixtape Daily of tape due same day as August 27 flick. By Shaheem Reid Idris Elba Photo: Getty Images The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Idris Elba is a big superstar, much deserving of all of the accolades, but don’t act like we didn’t put you up on his backstory as a DJ more than half a decade ago. When he’s not filming box-office blockbusters like “Obsessed” and this month’s upcoming “Takers,” he’s still getting it in behind the wheels of steel. Elba lays it down at the club during live sets and he’s still entrenched in the mixtape scene. In fact, he’s working on a major project to complement his latest film. “Takers mixtape; the film comes out on the 27th. I’m gonna put the tape out the same day as the film,” Idris told Mixtape Daily when we caught up with him over the weekend in Los Angeles. Elba, T.I., Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen and Jay Hernandez were all in the City of Angels doing press for the thriller. “I’m gonna get superstar records on there, some exclusives,” Elba continued. “But I’m also trying to get some people that follow me on Twitter, people that have been following and supporting ‘Takers’ to submit a couple records on the mixtape. Hopefully, it’ll be on Mixtape [Daily]. You can review the jam for me. I’ll throw a couple of my own songs on the jam, too — so be careful.” In the film, Elba plays Gordon Cozier, the leader of a team of highly educated, highly skilled, high-life-loving bank robbers. And yes, they play for high stakes. Gordon has just a few days to mastermind a seemingly impossible armored-car heist that would net the group tens of millions of dollars. At the same time, Gordon has family strife to confront: His sister leaves a drug rehab facility early and, almost immediately, falls off the wagon. “The truck scene. That truck thing, very, very exciting and unique,” Elba said of his favorite stunt in the film. As for his music-making co-stars, Grammy winners T.I. and Chris Brown, the British-born actor said he was impressed with their abilities as thespians. “They’re performers, number one,” Elba assessed. “And in this film, we’re being charismatic bad boys.
