HBCU Love: Donors Raise $8 Million To Keep Bennett College From Losing Accreditation

Source: Megan Q Daniels/Getty Images / Getty Congratulations!!! Bennett College Keeping Its Accreditation After Getting $8 Million Donation The Bennett Belles are having a triumphant day! Bennett College will keep its accreditation after donors helped the historically black college raise $8 million. The North Carolina college had a Monday deadline to raise $5 million to help keep their accreditation. WXii12 reports that during a 90-minute gathering Monday afternoon, school officials announced that they’ve raised $8.2 million. As of today, we have raised $8.2 million! We could not have done it without any of you! We are forever grateful! THANK YOU! #StandWithBennett #BennettCollege #BennettBelles #BennettMatters #HBCUsMatter — Bennett College (@BennettCollege) February 4, 2019 Bennett’s deadline came from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Colleges voted to remove Bennett’s membership due to financial instability in December. “When we were cited in December that we would be removed from membership in SACS, we were told that we did not meet one standard, which was financial resources. And so, SACS has 90 to 95 standards, and that’s the only standard we did not meet. So, to that extent we have to produce $5 million to demonstrate financial stability,” Bennett College President, Phyllis Worthy Dawkins said. “This $5 million can be used to support operations of the institution, can be used to support student gap funds and can be used in a variety of different ways,” Dawkins said. “We also are still liquidating some of our assets, so that does not include that amount (already raised), and we’re also seeking loan forgiveness, so a combination of things will make up the $5 million, so I feel confident we’re going to make it.” Donors included local college High Point University and the nation’s first black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. who pledged $100,000 to the institution. We’re happy to hear the news that another HBCU will continue to stand. Congrats Bennett!!!

Salty CEO Talk: Vice’s New CEO Doesn’t Have High Expectations For Desus & Mero’s Upcoming Show

Source: Charley Gallay / Getty Vice ‘s New CEO Has Some Choice Words For Desus & Mero You never know what you got ’til it’s gone–but in Nancy Dubuc’s case, it looks like she still doesn’t know what VICELAND had with Desus & Mero ; The new CEO of Vice seems to think the network’s formerly highest rated program won’t last at their new network, Showtime . In a recent interview with Elle , Dubuc expressed some disbelief in the brand, saying that Desus Nice and The Kid Mero’s fanbase isn’t in line with the group of people willing to pay for a platform like Showtime. How VICE's new CEO Nancy Dubuc plans to turn the historically male, historically dysfunctional company around. https://t.co/9nwdQ8LtTS — ELLE Magazine (US) (@ELLEmagazine) December 17, 2018 She is trying to fill up airtime on Vice’s television channel with high-quality content; later this year, she will introduce a two-hour nightly live broadcast in place of the former talk show hosted by Desus and Mero, whose departure to Showtime marked a major loss for the brand. “They’re going to a platform that their audience doesn’t pay for,” she tells me. “I told them, ‘You can always come back.’ ” Though accessibility is something that Bodega Boys fans were initially worried about as well, Desus and Mero know their fanbase–and as they expressed to Bossip in an interview following their live show in Atlanta this past summer, the new show (which starts February 21) will be available in more ways than one: Mero resumed, “people are scared because they think it’s gonna be wild inaccessible, and it’s not gonna be wild inaccessible.” “You don’t have to have a Showtime login to watch what we’re gonna put out,” Desus assured.  “ Bodega Hive  is something very personal to us…we cannot just sh*t on this f**king fanbase.” So, after ending their show 2 months early following the exciting announcement of a new Showtime gig, it looks like Vice still isn’t done taking shots at the most notable show to grace their own network. If Dubuc is still open to welcoming Desus and Mero back after the grief they expressed about the network following their departure, it seems pretty clear who needs who more. See you on February 21, ballbags.

Kappa Alpha Psi Hosted The Clemson University Party Where The Floor Collapsed

Continued here:

T he college homecoming party in South Carolina that ended catastrophically when the floor collapsed early Sunday morning was thrown by a Black fraternity, according to reports. Dozens were injured at the off-campus festivities hosted every year by the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity chapter at Clemson University. However, none of the injuries were reportedly life-threatening. The party was reportedly in full swing with people dancing to the music when the first floor of the clubhouse at The Woodlands of Clemson fell directly into the building’s basement level. “Posted unsafe structure” signs have been added to the #Woodlands clubhouse in #Clemson . Other than that, the scene remains unchanged from this morning. pic.twitter.com/eCWMZuq8dx — Mollie R. Simon (@mrsimon22) October 21, 2018 “We started jumping, and we just – boom! – all you seen was black,” Franzie Pendergrass, who was at the party and managed to record footage of the floor collapsing, told WYFF , the local NBC affiliate. At least 30 people were reported as being injured. “The beat was about to drop and literally the whole floor collapsed,” Larissa Stone, a Clemson sophomore, told the Greenville News . “It happened so quickly. I stood up, and everyone was trying to climb out. People are under other people. People are hurt. People are bleeding. I had blood on my sneakers. It was really bad.” While the Kappas threw the party – one that the historically Black fraternity hosts each year for homecoming, according to a Clemson official – it was doubtful that there were any laws the group violated. The party may have been filled to or beyond the clubhouse’s capacity – a figure that was not immediately reported – or the floor collapsing may have just been because of a structural issue with at the condominium complex, which was built in 2005. An email sent from condo management to its residents said there would be an inspection. “The Clubhouse and pool area is OFF LIMITS to all.  The clubhouse will be inspected by structural engineers as soon as possible,” the email said in part. “From there, the homeowners association will determine how to rebuild the clubhouse to make it safe for all residents. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those who were injured we and apologize for any inconvenience.” The Kappas are one of eight historically Black fraternities and sororities on the campus of Clemson. As of Sunday night, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. had not issued a statement on any of its social media channels or its official website . Clemson assured its affected students  that they would be given all the “support” they needed. Video of the floor collapsing spread quickly on social media. Watch the disturbing footage below at your own discretion. Malveaux Hates Fourth of July – Reminds Her of Slavery and Economic Inequality

If you were African-American living in the era of President Barack Obama, would you hate the Fourth of July because it reminded you of slavery and economic inequality? You would if your name was Julianne Malveaux and you were the syndicated columnist that also serves as the president of Bennett College, the historically black women’s school in Greensboro, North Carolina. So disdainful of America’s most-revered national holiday is Malveaux that she admitted in her July 2 USA Today op-ed , “I have never been big on the Fourth of July. Most years, I took great pleasure in reading the powerful Frederick Douglass speech, ‘The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro.'” Though written in 1852, this college president actually sees relevance to modern day America in these words: “What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July,” he thundered to a crowd in Rochester, N.Y. “I answer, a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity … your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery.”  Imagine that. A black man is now the most powerful elected leader on the face of the planet. Another black man is the most powerful law enforcement official in the country, and under the previous administration, the Secretaries of State were black, one of them also being a woman. Regardless, the president of a mostly black women’s college sees nothing but racial injustice and economic inequality around her:  Our nation has come a long way since 1852, but for many African Americans, shouts of liberty are still hollow mockery. Unemployment is a scourge on all Americans, but the black unemployment rate, at 15.3% in May, is nearly twice the white rate. Every economic indicator – income, wealth, homeownership – screams inequality. Despite his scathing commentary, Douglass said, “I do not despair of this country.” Nor do I. But progress has been so slowed, optimism so dimmed, and some criticisms of our president so blatantly racial that I’m returning to my ritual of reading Frederick Douglass, if only as a reminder that the struggle for justice and equality must continue. So, in Malveaux’s mind like so many of her ilk, equal opportunity isn’t enough. Until all Americans possess the same things, the nation is unjust. Which means this is not about equal opportunity but equal outcome, an inconvenient truth her kind refuses to admit as they shout “racist” at any white person more successful than them. Of course, what should one expect from a serial-hater that in 1994 actually wished — on national television — for Clarence Thomas to die: I guess for folks like Malveaux, racial and economic equality need only apply to black liberals. Sadly, this is a racial hypocrisy quite common amongst so-called journalists today. Doesn’t make sense, does it?  On the other hand, Malveaux has contributed to The Progressive, a magazine whose editor also hates the Fourth of July. Like peas in a progressive pod.
