Quentin Tarantino Tackles Slavery: ‘You’re Going to Want to Talk After’ Django Unchained

Re-writing the fate of Hitler’s Nazi Germany was just the start for Quentin Tarantino , whose American South-set spaghetti western Django Unchained , his follow-up to the Oscar-winning Inglorious Basterds , tackles another ugly moment in world history: Institutionalized slavery. But are audiences ready to process the tough reminder of America’s regrettable past that lies not-so-deep beneath the surface of Tarantino’s revenge Western? Tarantino and stars Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington, Christoph Waltz and Walton Goggins hit Comic-Con to share footage from Django Unchained , the tale of a slave (Foxx) freed by a bounty hunter (Waltz) who sets off to rescue his wife from a Southern plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). While grindhouse-esque violence , a bright pop canvas, an oily and evil DiCaprio, and Tarantino’s encyclopedic affinity for the genre have already made Django one of the most anticipated films of the year, deeper reflections demanded by the s-word — slavery — could make Django a real socio-historical conversation-starter. “When I read this script the first time I thought, this was going to start a revolution,” recalled Goggins, who filmed his part as Billy Crash, Candie’s right hand man, during time off from TV’s Justified . “Not necessarily people in the streets, but an inward revolution. I think it’s going to play a significant part in race conversations. I keep saying this over and over again: Make your dinner reservations now, because you’re going to want to talk after this movie.” In the film, Foxx’s Django is freed from bondage on the condition that he help Waltz’s Dr. King Schultz hunt down a pair of sibling outlaws, a set-up that allows Django to literally cast off his shackles and start kicking ass in retribution. But while Foxx seems to acquit himself quite while in the first promos, he points to castmate Washington for her bravery in the face of some of the film’s most difficult scenes. Between takes of a scene in which Washington is lashed, Tarantino piped in a song by gospel singer Fred Hammond through on-set speakers per Foxx’s request. The actor recalled the emotional scene. “The song was, ‘No weapons formed against me shall prosper,’” he said, singing the melody. “When that song was playing, one black lady [extra] from New Orleans who had never been on a set before, I see her hands go up like this. And I see her rocking back and forth with the child that she was standing with… You’ll see it on screen. You’ll feel it.” Washington, meanwhile, found strength within the love story at the center of Django (which reunites her with Foxx, who played her onscreen husband in Ray ). “One of the things I loved about this character is that she exists in a time when historically, black women were of a necessity independently strong, and the breakdown of the black community in order to maintain slavery began with the breakdown of the black family,” she said. “I loved that this film is about two people who, even though they exist in a time when in our Constitution they’re only 3/5 a human being, they so believe in their own humanity and so believe in the love that they share and their illegal marriage that they risk life to find each other.” While Washington’s Broomhilda isn’t the kind of action-oriented leading lady of Tarantino’s previous films, she marks a different kind of cinematic milestone. “The fact that Broomhilda gets to be the princess in the tower that gets rescued by her man in a way that kind of reclaims black marriage and black love, to me, is a different kind of strength,” Washington said. “I felt like the black woman as the princess in the tower who’s rescued is an archetype we haven’t been able to enjoy.” Diving into the themes and world of the antebellum South was tough for everyone on set, Goggins admitted. His Billy Crash — a “mandingo fight trainer extraordinaire” on Candie’s plantation — serves as one of the film’s antagonists, and required Goggins to go to some particularly ugly places in character. “While liberal Walton didn’t have anything to apologize for, I began every take with an apology because these are my friends, outside of what it means to a race of people and to everybody,” he said. “It’s not easy. It’s awful to say these things, but you’re in the service of something much greater than yourself and you’re telling a piece of history that is the biggest blight on our history as a country, and it needs to be retold.” Django Unchained hits theaters this Christmas . ‘Transformers 4’ Will Feature ‘New Cast,’ Space Setting

Director Michael Bay speaks out on his plans for his fourth and final round with the robots in disguise. By Josh Wigler “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: When “Transformers” revs up for its fourth big-screen adventure, you’ll see plenty of familiar faces along for the ride: Optimus Prime, Bumblebee. … But there won’t be a single human character from the old guard. Unless, of course, you count director Michael Bay. “It’s a new cast,” the director matter-of-factly told the Los Angeles Times about his plans for “Transformers 4,” which will not feature Shia LaBeouf’s Sam Witwicky at all. “We’re moving on to something different.” “It’s not a reboot, that’s maybe the wrong word,” Bay added. “I don’t want to say reboot because then people will think we’re doing a Spider-Man and starting from the beginning. We’re not. We’re taking the story that you’ve seen &8212; the story we’ve told in three movies already &8212; and we’re taking it in a new direction. But we’re leaving those three as the history. It all still counts. I met with the writer before I went off to do ‘Pain and Gain’ and we talked about a bunch of ideas. We let that simmer for a bit. He’s been thinking about stuff and now we’re getting back together next week to see what we’ve got and to see if it gels.” One of the new ideas that Bay has cooked up: the possibility of bringing the Autobots and Decepticons to outer space. “I think so, yeah, a little,” he said when asked if the fourth film would go off-planet. “That feels like the way to go, doesn’t it? I want to go a little off, but I don’t want to go too sci-fi. I still want to keep it grounded. That’s what works in these movies, that’s what makes it accessible.” Bay said that “Transformers 4,” which will have a smaller budget than its predecessors by “about $30 million,” will be his final ride with Prime and pals. He’s said as much in the past, of course — but this time, Bay insists that he means business. “Here’s the thing, it’s tough to find someone who’s done these kind of movies and to have the complication of creating the new stuff that needs to be in this movie — not just characters but a new type of action, I hope — and that’s a lot for someone new to bite off,” said the director. “And so after this one I will leave it in the best hands possible. That’s the plan.” Tell us what you think of Bay’s “Transformers” plans in the comments below! Justin Bieber Forced To Play Unplugged Show After Apollo Power Outage

By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: Judging by the screams and massive crowds that follow him whenever he performs live, Justin Bieber has a penchant for blowing his fans’ minds. But on Monday night during a private show at Harlem, New York’s legendary Apollo Theater he also blew out the power grid. According to the Associated Press , Bieber was forced to finish the show unplugged after the power went out at the venue near the end of the show. Most of the stage instruments lost juice and manager Scooter Braun said the problem caused the singer to improvise. “Then we hear the fire alarm,” Braun explained “Literally, the boy blew up the Apollo — he heated up the Apollo.” Before the show, Bieber tweeted that the gig was a special one for him given the history of the storied venue, which has hosted everyone from James Brown, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder to Mariah Carey and, recently, former Beatle Paul McCartney. “A lot of emotions in the building,” he wrote . “This one is special. This one is for MJ.” A short time later, he joked, “Me and @ludacris blew up the power at the @ApolloTheater. Haha. Epic. #beastmode … A night none of us will ever forget!! That is how u end an #AllAroundTheWorld run!!! With no power for the last song … my fans sang it 4 me!” The power outage only affected the stage instruments and some lighting and while Braun was told the problem would be solved in a few minutes, it went on for more than 40 minutes. Bieber tried to have fun with the glitch at first, joking that it was all the “hot girls in here,” according to Apollo rep Nina Flowers, who ranked the snafu as a classic “Apollo moment.” MTV News has rounded up all the vital information to get you up to speed on today’s album release. Also, be sure to tune in on tonight for MTV’s “Bieber Live,”
where Justin will dish about his new album at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT. The 18-year-old pro hardly missed a beat, jumping behind the drums for a solo and asking the crowd to serenade Braun for his birthday. Though he was happy to vamp for a bit, at some point Braun said Bieber got frustrated when the power outage went on for nearly an hour because the show was being taped as part of an NBC special slated to air later this week in celebration of his new album, Believe
. He got over it and rewarded the crowd that had stuck with him during the outage by performing his hit single “Boyfriend” with some audience participation. “He walks out, he literally quiets the crowd, and he says, ‘I’m sorry the power is out. . (But) you guys have always had my back. I’m going to sing ‘Boyfriend’ and you’re going to sing it back to me,'” Braun said. Flowers didn’t know what caused the power to run out, but she gave Bieber props for his professionalism. “He could have stopped; he could have not gone on and said, I did everything . but he came back on,” she said. Don’t miss “Bieber Live”

Father’s Day: Top Five Worst Movie Dads And Why We Love Them

In honor of Father’s Day, we name our favorite ‘worst’ dads in film, from Mrs. Doubtfire to Darth Vader. By Kevin P. Sullivan Robin Williams in “Mrs. Doubtfire” Photo: The movies have given us some of the best and worst fathers in the history of pop culture. A deadbeat dad can spark the action for an entire film, and a good one can inspire the lesson you’re supposed to take home from a movie. But some dads are just so wonderfully misguided, so hilariously unfit for their role that we can’t help but love them. So in honor of Father’s Day, here is our rundown of some of our favorite best worst dads in film history. Odin – “Thor” Sure, he’s the All Father, dad to Thor, and pretty terrible stepfather to Loki, but when he’s really needed, what does he do? He goes into his “Odinsleep.” Earth was on the brink of destruction thanks to Loki’s treacherous ways, and Odin’s solution is to take a nap? Granted he wakes up just in time to save Thor from falling off of the destroyed Bifr

Watch Alan Menken Play Songs from Newsies, Including His 1993 Razzie Winner

Newsies on Broadway has entered the national consciousness, so now I get to say this to all the rest of you: FINALLY . Join me, Fansies, in watching Oscar- and Grammy-winning composer Alan Menken tickle the ivories to a number of his best Newsies tunes from the 1992 cult movie and the Harvey Fierstein-penned Broadway adaptation , and consider: Did he really deserve that Razzie award? Menken, of course, is the lauded composer of a number of modern Disney classics — The Little Mermaid , Beauty and the Beast , Aladdin , among others — and he’s got a knack for turning out catchy numbers with unforgettable melodies. Well, except for the cabaret number “High Times, Hard Times,” sung in the movie by Ann-Margret, playing the cougar songbird Medda. He likely would have gone his entire recent guest spot on the New York-area show Theater Talk (watch it below) if stage collaborator and fellow guest Fierstein hadn’t cajoled, “Where’s that song that won you the Razzie award?”, prompting Menken to comply. The number was never anyone’s favorite ditty (Ann-Margret singing on a swing to a theater full of cat-calling young boys? SURE), and it was cut out in the adaptation process, but Menken seems to have a sense of humor about it now — and more importantly, he doesn’t pronounce the word “chest” like “shest,” which always made me cringe a little. More fascinating in this half-hour show is how Menken and Fierstein run through the history and conception of their film-to-stage adaptation, acknowledging the perceived flaws in the film that they tweaked for their musical, which debuted in New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse last year so well that the show transitioned to Broadway. Is it a slight bit of heresy to see how casually Fierstein dismisses Bill Pullman’s newspaper man character Denton, who was hacked from the adaptation and combined with David’s maddeningly useless sister Sarah, the axed pair morphing into one lady newspaper reporter love interest? Well, yeah. Do I understand my fellow hardcore Newsies fans who might be a bit upset to learn that Fierstein and Menken have so little love for the “Patrick’s mother” character, a woman who sings literally two lines in one song in the film while looking for her runaway son in the town square? Absolutely. Some of us are purists. [ Theater Talk ]

John Huston Postage Stamps Will Save Snail Mail

Ha! Kidding. But don’t tell me you’ve never wanted to lick the guy. Wait, what? We can’t have that privilege, either? What is going on here? Anyway, here are some sweet new postage stamps featuring directors John Huston, Billy Wilder, John Ford and Frank Capra. They are available today for philatelists and the snail-mail enthusiast in your life. (Hint, hint.) Read on for full details via the USPS and its partners at the American Film Institute. [Click above for bigger image] SILVER SPRING, MD — Four extraordinary film directors — Frank Capra, John Ford, John Huston and Billy Wilder — received a stamping ovation today with the issuance of the Great Film Directors First-Class Forever stamps. The dedication took place at the American Film Institute Silver Theatre and Cultural Center where some of their works were showcased. Available nationwide today, the stamps can be purchased online at usps.com/shop, by calling 1-800-STAMP-24 (1-800-782-6724) or by visiting Post Offices. “With these stamps, we’re bringing these filmmakers out from behind their cameras and putting them in the spotlight so that we can learn more about them,” said Samuel Pulcrano, U.S. Postal Service vice president, Corporate Communications in dedicating the stamps. “Movies offer a window into our history and heritage and tell the story of America. Similar to movies, stamps honor our past and celebrate our achievements while encouraging us to learn more about the people, places, and ideas that shape the American experience.” Joining Pulcrano in dedicating the stamps were Jean Picker Firstenberg, American Film Institute president emerita and Postmaster General’s Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee chair; Dr. Bernie Cook, associate dean and director of media studies, Georgetown University; Ray Barry, director, AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center; Silver Spring Postmaster Tony Thompson; and, Arch Campell, ABC television arts and entertainment critic who emceed the event. “The American Film Institute’s mission is to preserve and showcase the cinematic treasures created by these and other directors and it is our hope that these Forever stamps will encourage Americans to see their classic movies that gave us a mirror on our country’s character and values,” said Firstenberg. Following the ceremony, AFI Silver Theatre provided the audience with a screening of Billy Wilder’s The Apartment . The four filmmakers received multiple Academy Award nominations, 15 Oscars, and numerous other honors during their lifetimes. But their greatest accomplishment lies in the vitality and artistry of the stories they told through film. Over a period of approximately 40 years, the quintessentially American filmmakers captured multiple contradictions, tensions, dark and light sides in deeply personal interpretations that conveyed the American experience as never before. The stamp art combines a portrait of each director with a scene from one of his most iconic works. The background art for the stamp honoring Frank Capra shows a scene from It Happened One Night , a comedy in which a runaway heiress (played by Claudette Colbert) and a reporter (Clark Gable) compare their hitchhiking skills. For the John Ford stamp, the background recalls a scene from The Searchers , an influential Western starring John Wayne and making Ford’s characteristic use of the American landscape. The Maltese Falcon inspired the background art for the John Huston stamp. In this classic mystery, gumshoe Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) goes up against various unscrupulous characters (among them Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, and Sydney Greenstreet). For Billy Wilder, the stamp background artwork was inspired by Some Like It Hot , a farce about two male musicians (Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis) who seek refuge from gangsters by posing as members of an all-girl band featuring luscious singer Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe). Art Director Derry Noyes of Washington, DC, designed these stamps using art by award-winning illustrator Gary Kelley of Cedar Falls, IA, who created the images using pastels on paper. Customers may view the Great Film Directors Forever stamps, as well as many of this year’s other stamps, on Facebook at facebook.com/USPSStamps , through Twitter @USPSstamps or on the website Beyond the Perf at beyondtheperf.com/2012-preview . Beyond the Perf is the Postal Service’s online site for background on upcoming stamp subjects, first-day-of-issue events and other philatelic news. ###

In the mirror next to her, she’s dolled up in a sparkling red costume and bright blue hair, singing into a candy-cane microphone. “Be yourself and you can be anything,” the poster reads. The big reveal came with a bit of a contest. The first 20 people who were able to put the full poster together out of the puzzle pieces she’d released and tweet a photo to @KatyPerry using #KP3D will be picked to have a chance to see their Twitter handles featured in the closing credits of the colorful 3-D flick. The July 5 release was directed by Magical Elves’ Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz, who also served as producers on Justin Bieber’s successful “Never Say Never” concert movie. In a trailer released in early April , fans got a taste of what they would see and hear in the flick, including Perry’s candid confessions about her religious childhood and her split from Russell Brand. MTV News spoke to Perry in March about the film, and she explained just what fans will see in it. “It’s closing the chapter on [my album] Teenage Dream, but it’s giving you such an inside perspective,” Perry said. “This film, you’re going to see it from my best friend/buddy perspective, you’re going to see exactly what I mean and feel and think about everything.” The movie was filmed during her California Dreams trek. “That tour was so life-changing to me. I learned so much, I went through so much along the way,” Perry said. “I’m not necessarily trying to prove anything to anyone, but not only will people really hands-down know me after they see this film, but you’ll see me as the Dorothy wearing the red ruby slipper and at the end of it all I’m the [Wizard of] Oz as well.” Related Videos MTV First: Katy Perry’s ‘Part Of Me’ Related Artists Katy Perry
