Bloomberg’s Carlson Slams Christine O’Donnell as Brainless, But Gushed Over Primary Victories of Boxer and Feinstein in ’92

In a zinger that roused the indignation of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Bloomberg columnist Margaret Carlson cast Christine O’Donnell as Sarah Palin’s protege – but “with not a fully-functioning human brain.” But in 1992, Carlson gushed over the primary victories of current Sens. Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein. Does she hold a double-standard? Co-host Mika Brzezinski was taken aback when the panel had to discuss Carlson’s piece for The Daily Beast, “Watch Your Back, Sarah.” She silently mouthed the word “bitchy” to Carlson to describe the article, adding that it was “searing.” Carlson’s piece focuses on the emergence of the Republican Delaware Senate nominee as the next Sarah Palin protege, predicting a political catfight of sorts between the two female GOP stars. Carlson labeled O’Donnell an “obvious knockoff” of Palin, “hawking her wares on the shores of the Delaware.” Appearing on “Morning Joe” Wednesday, Carlson sneered that O’Donnell lacks a “fully-functioning human brain.” Of course, there was a time when she smiled upon the emergence of female Senate candidates. In 1992, Carlson hailed the primary victories of now California Sens. Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein, both Democrats and both liberal feminists. “There was a rush, an exultation that surpassed any political moment I have ever known – better even than Geraldine Ferraro’s vice-presidential candidacy,” she wrote. Eighteen years later, it’s conservative Republican women who are heating up the 2010 midterm season, and Carlson can’t do enough to bash them at every turn. A transcript of the segment, which aired on September 22 at 6:24 a.m. EDT, is as follows: MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Margaret wrote a searing piece on this woman called “Watch Your Back, Sarah.” And I’m sorry, it’s a little – JOE SCARBOROUGH: A little harsh? BRZEZINSKI: (Mouthing words) Bitchy. A little – I’m sorry. (…) MARGARET: This is how we get in trouble. BRZEZINSKI: I’m just saying – “rarr.” (Imitating cat noise) CARLSON: No, I was just suggesting that – BRZEZINSKI: You more than suggest. CARLSON: Christine O’Donnell is, you know, what the Republican Party’s been heading to for a long time. It’s – she’s post-Sarah Palin. And she’s got a fully – SCARBOROUGH: (Laughing) Post-modernist. (Crosstalk) CARLSON: With not a fully-functioning human brain. (Collective groan) WILLIE GEIST: That’s not fair. BRZEZINSKI: You go below the belt. CARLSON: This is where the elites will be getting out the e-mail now to me. But, you know, she’s not, she’s not ready for this. I think she’s more fluent than Sarah Palin, in that what she says comes out better and you can parse it. But she’s taken on – she’s taken on – she’s copying her act. I mean, already, you know, she’s putting on the glasses. She doesn’t need them except for cosmetic reasons.

3-Million-Year-Old Whale Unearthed at the San Diego Zoo

Workmen constructing a storm water equalization tank this week at the San Diego Zoo dug up a surprising find: a 3-million-year-old whale. The construction crew was using an excavotor to dig through fine grain sand, when suddenly the machine struck a solid item. Further investigation revealed that this obstacle was an enormous prehistoric whale. Our genus, Homo, wasn't even around 3 million years ago, so this wasn't some sort of super prehistoric zoo. The site then, during the Pliocene, was under water. The 24-foot baleen whale appears to be very well preserved, with much of the fossilized skeleton present. Finding an intact skull, along with the vertebrae and flippers, is quite rare, according to Sarah Siren, San Diego Natural History Museum paleontological field manager. link: http://news.discovery.com/animals/the-3-million-year-old-whale-unearthed-at-the-… added by: eva2

Vitamin D proven far better than vaccines at preventing influenza infections

If scientists discovered something that worked better than vaccines at preventing influenza, you'd think they would jump all over it, right? After all, isn't the point to protect children and adults from influenza? A clinical trial led by Mitsuyoshi Urashima and conducted by the Division of Molecular Epidemiology in the the Department of Pediatrics at the Jikei University School of Medicine Minato-ku in Tokyo found that vitamin D was extremely effective at halting influenza infections in children. The trial appears in the March, 2010 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Am J Clin Nutr (March 10, 2010). doi:10.3945/ajcn.2009.29094) The results are from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 334 children, half of which were given 1200 IUs per day of vitamin D3. In other words, this was a “rigorous” scientific study meeting the gold standard of scientific evidence. In the study, while 31 of 167 children in the placebo group contracted influenza over the four month duration of the study, only 18 of 168 children in the vitamin D group did. This means vitamin D was responsible for an absolute reduction of nearly 8 percent. Flu vaccines, according to the latest scientific evidence, achieve a 1 percent reduction in influenza symptoms ( http://www.naturalnews.com/029641_v…) . This means vitamin D appears to be 800% more effective than vaccines at preventing influenza infections in children. To further support this, what really needs to be done is a clinical trial directly comparing vitamin D supplements to influenza vaccines with four total groups: Group #1 receives a vitamin D placebo Group #2 receives real vitamin D (2,000 IUs per day) Group #3 receives an influenza vaccine injection Group #4 receives an inert injection Groups 1 and 2 should be randomized and double blind while groups 3 and 4 should also be randomized and double blind. The results would reveal the comparative effectiveness of vitamin D versus influenza vaccines. Unfortunately, such a trial will never be conducted because vaccine pushers already know this trial would show their vaccines to be all but useless. So they won't subject vaccines to any real science that compares it to vitamin D. Vitamin D also significantly reduced asthma in children Getting back to the study, another fascinating result from the trial is that if you remove those children from the study who were already being given vitamin D by their parents, so that you are only looking at children who started out with no vitamin D supplementation before the trial began, the results look even better as vitamin D reduced relative infection risk by nearly two-thirds. More than six out of ten children who would have normally been infected with influenza, in other words, were protected by vitamin D supplementation. Also revealed in the study: vitamin D strongly suppressed symptoms of asthma. In children with a previous asthma diagnosis, 12 of those receiving no vitamin D experienced asthma attacks. But in the vitamin D group, only 2 children did. While this subset sample size is small, it does offer yet more evidence that vitamin D prevents asthma attacks in children, and this entirely consistent with the previous evidence on vitamin D which shows it to be a powerful nutrient for preventing asthma. Vaccine pushers aren't followers of real science Now, given that vitamin D3 shows such a powerful effect in preventing influenza — with 800% increased efficacy over vaccines — shouldn't CDC officials, doctors and health authorities be rushing to recommend vitamin D before flu season arrives? Of course they should. But they won't. Because for them, it's not about actually preventing influenza and it never has been. The vaccine pushing camp is primarily interested in using influenza as an excuse to vaccinate more people regardless of whether such vaccines are useful (or safe). Even if vitamin D offered 100% protection against all influenza infections, they still wouldn't recommend it. Why? Because they flatly don't believe in nutrition! It runs counter to their med school programming which says that nutrients are useless and only drugs, vaccines and surgery count as real medicine. The vaccine pushers, you see, aren't followers of real science. You could publish a hundred studies proving how vitamin D is many times more effective than vaccines and they still would never recommend it. They are promoters of medical dogma rather than real solutions for patients. They promote vaccines because… well… that's what they've always promoted, and that's what their colleagues promote. And how could so many smart people be wrong, anyway? But that's the history of science: A whole bunch of really smart people turn out to be wrong on a regular basis. That's usually how science advances, by the way: A new idea challenges an old assumption, and after all the defenders of the old (wrong) idea die off, science manages to inch its way forward against the hoots and heckles of a determined dogmatic resistance. Jay-Z/Eminem LP Would Be ‘Up There With Thriller,’ Fans Say

‘It would be impossible to find that album,’ says one fan of a potential collabo after historic Yankee Stadium concert. By MTV News staff Eminem and Jay-Z perform at Yankee Stadium on Monday Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Jay-Z and Eminem just finished their Home and Home showcase, with each MC headlining two nights at baseball stadiums in their respective hometowns, New York and Detroit. But now that they’ve wrapped, is there the potential for the two to join forces again soon? MTV News hit the pavement in the Bronx just outside of Yankee Stadium to pose the question to the people: Do you want to hear a joint Jay-Z and Eminem project? “Eminem and Jay-Z together,” Karyn responded. “What a phenomenal duo — who can top that?” Jay-Z has had his share of collabo albums in the past, including two with R. Kelly and a mash-up project with Linkin Park. Now, however, the Roc Nation boss is working on a joint LP with Kanye West . But most fans seemed to agree that a record with Jay-Z and Eminem would be historical. “If Jay and Em did a record together, it would be off the hook,” Dot said. “If God can bless this earth with Jay-Z and Eminem doing an album together, all hell would break loose,” Armaan told MTV News. “It would be impossible to find that album.” Music-industry insider Eddie Blackmon agreed the project would move quickly off shelves. “They’re two of the greatest lyrical artists of our generation,” he explained. “I think if they got together and collaborated on a project, it’d sell millions and millions of records.” New Edition’s Michael Bivins also attended the event and afterward, he told MTV News he was enthusiastic about the idea of the two superstars coming together. “The expectations might be really, really high,” Bivins said about a potential LP. “Up there with Thriller. ” Do you think Jay and Em should extend their joint-tour idea to the recording studio? Barnicle: Christine Can’t Win Cause She’s ‘Crazy’

The trashing of Christine O’Donnell continues.  Two days after Karl Rove took to the air to scald his party’s newly-nominated candidate, Mike Barnicle has declared that O’Donnell won’t win because she’s not merely “different,” but “crazy.” On today’s Morning Joe, the former Boston Globe columnist fumbled and fumfered when asked to back up his allegation with facts.  And speaking of facts, Barnicle had his badly wrong when it came to the number of votes O’Donnell won in the primary.  But that didn’t stop him from slurring the Delaware Republican. Watch as Barnicle goes into stutter mode when asked to support his assertion. Note: Barnicle claimed O’Donnell had garnered “only 24,000 votes” in the Delaware primary election.  Hey, he was only off by a factor of 25%+ .  Not bad for the MSM. PAT BUCHANAN: We are now 24, 48 hours later. She has had a sensational kick-off.  She’s controversial; all these people are rushing to her defense because she’s sort of been martyred by Rove and the neo-cons. There’s an enormous boost here: you’ve only got seven weeks left in the campaign! MIKE BARNICLE: Here’s her [problem] — JOE SCARBOROUGH: You say “martyred.”  Rove didn’t martyr her: he told the truth about her history. BARNICLE: Here’s her problem. BUCHANAN:  Look: I know a lot of truths about Republicans. Why would I go on the air now and start trashing them? MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Umm, so that better ones emerge? BARNICLE: A. She only got 24,000 votes. All right?  She got very few votes in a very small turn-out Republican primary. The other problem, the larger problem she has, I would submit, is this: that “different” this year, for a candidate, is good.  People are looking for “different” this year.  “Crazy” is not good. MARK HALPERIN: She’s not coming across as crazy. BUCHANAN: Crazy? HALPERIN: I’m not so sure. BARNICLE: She will.  She will.  She will because of uh, eh, uh, eh.  It’s just my —

50 Cent Explains G-Unit’s LED-Lit Outfits At Jay-Z/Eminem Show

‘Michael Jackson used to do that back in the day,’ 50 says. By Shaheem Reid 50 Cent Photo: MTV News Welcome back to Tri-State Stadium Status 50 Cent . The leader of the G-Unit hasn’t been seen in a major stadium in his hometown area since Hot 97’s 2004 Summer Jam at Giants Stadium , where he was involved in the infamous chair-throwing incident with some rivals from Queens. For years, fans have missed Fif and the Unit at the annual mega-concert. Well, last night, the Unit returned in their entirety during Eminem and Jay-Z’s Home and Home concert at Yankee Stadium . 50 Cent , Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo appeared onstage together during the first of two stadium shows on two consecutive nights. Although later in the night, Drake and Jay-Z performed “Light Up,” it was the collective from Queens who literally lit up onstage, not just with “I Get Money,” “In Da Club” and “Beamer, Benz or Bentley” but with their illuminated clothes. “It’s at ease,” 50 said about coming out as Eminem’s special guest. The Unit also appeared at Jay and Shady’s shows in Detroit at Comerica Park. “I’m at ease. Before it’s time for us to go onstage, you’re watching a cool 35 minutes of the building being torn apart. You come out, the pressure is not there. The excitement of you coming out in the middle of that, you see the audience. You see the whole thing changes. I knew what kind of event it was. I made my vocations. I had them put lights on us and do different things you probably would only see … the last time I seen the LED lights was Chris Brown’s performance. [We perform in] different styles of clothes. It’s not like the suits he had on. Michael Jackson used to do that back in the day. So I just made it more hip-hop and brought that to the actual shows.” “It was crazy, man,” Tony Yayo said about his crew’s outfits. “Especially when the lights go off. LED lights on the jackets.” “It’s fun,” 50 chimed back in. “I’mma start doing different things performance-wise. Come outside of the box. Do different things that look like a show. Ninety percent of the time you’re watching hip-hop, you see a guy sings a song where … you can see him in that same outfit another day onstage. We can dress it up from time to time and do different things.” While Jay-Z brought out Drake, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Beyonc

Amazing: AP Writers Obsess Over Negative Electoral Impact Of Upcoming Census Bureau Poverty Stats

It seems reasonable from their coverage in anticipation of the Census Bureua’s release of income and poverty statistics this week that Hope Yen and Liz Sidoti of the Associated Press have a roof over their heads and aren’t particularly worried about where their next meal is coming from. If so, good for them; may those circumstances continue. What’s remarkable, though, is how a government report that the media, especially the AP, has traditionally treated as an indicator of society’s alleged failure to take care of its neediest –with the blame often directly aimed at Republicans and conservatives — is now primarily a political problem for the party in power. Yen and Sidoti engage in a presidential pity party, and in the process come off as indifferent about what the numbers, for all their imperfections (and they are substantial), might mean in human terms — again, something the press normally obsesses over, especially when a Republican or conservative is president. This time, it seems that if Ms. Yen and Ms. Sidoti had their way, this unfortunate information would be held until at least November 3. What follows are graphic capture’s of the pair’s first four paragraphs, followed by paragraphs 12-16: Comments: This report comes out each September, but this one is suddently “unfortunate timing” and “another blow” for the president and his party. The AP didn’t seem to handle things the same way eight years ago, the last time a new president and his Congressional majority party faced mid-term elections. Even though George W. Bush’s administration was dealing with the aftermath of an official “recession” and the poverty rate rose, you’ll see in this unbylined AP item in the September 24, 2002 Gainesville Sun published after the release of that year’s report that there was no reference to how unfortunate the timing or the news might be for W. The AP did find the time to get a quote from Democrat Paul Sarbanes, who, in AP’s paraphrasing, said that “the Bush administration had focused too much attention on tax cuts and not enough on the needs of the most vulnerable citizens.” “Rightly or wrongly, Republicans could cite a higher poverty rate as evidence” that “Obama’s economic fixes are hindering the sluggish economic recovery.” It would have been interesting to see Yen and Sidoti try to find someone to quote on this topic. It seems only fair, given that they gave Paul Sarbanes a chance to say why George Bush was allegedly wrong. Yen and Sidoti automatically assume that blacks and Hispanics will respond to the reported rise in their poverty rate by voting as they usually do or staying home during the midterm elections. Isn’t it just a little bit possible that some of them will decide that voting for the other team might make more sense after almost two years of not so benign neglect at the hands of the party they have traditionally favored? Oh, and am I supposed to believe that the Essential Global News Network doesn’t have a homelessness-related photo dated later than the April 13, 2009 article-accompanying item seen at the top right of this post? Why, you’d think AP might be trying to imply that homelessness hasn’t gotten any worse in the intervening 17 months. But  it has .  Really . As is seemingly typical at AP, in unexcerpted material the report quoted and labeled one allegedly “conservative” political science professor at New York University while later quoting an economist from far-left American Prospect co-founder Robert Kuttner’s Economic Policy Institute (board members, including Kuttner, are listed and described  here ). Of course, the EPI “somehow” went unlabeled. Cross-posted at BizzyBlog.com .
