REVIEW: Next-Level Bloodshed, Stunning Visuals Keep Centurion From Genre Oblivion

If you’re like me, and you find yourself retreating to a safe place in your mind whenever human beings are being graphically decapitated on screen, you’ll spend the majority of Centurion , horror maestro ( The Descent ) Neil Marshall’s Roman bloodbath, on psychological lockdown. The more philosophical and intellectually detached among you might wait out the frequent plasmatic explosions from an interested distance, speculating on the cultural circularities implicit in evisceration as entertainment, or teasing out the film’s bizarre but unmistakable urination motif. The rest — the majority, I suppose — will revel in every hyper-realistic goring, unconcerned with the irony of the bloodthirsty, second-century barbarism Marshall dwells on, giving the film its of-the-moment appeal.

Don’t Ask Gerard Depardieu to Join the Juliette Binoche Fan Club

I know, I know: When you think of Gerard Depardieu, the very first thing that comes to mind is the kindly French chef he played in the Queen Latifah vehicle Last Holiday . (After that, maybe My Father the Hero ?) Sadly, he is not at all like that character, as his cruel, out-of-nowhere remarks about French compatriot Juliette Binoche prove.

Dr. Frank Ryan Died After Tweeting About Dog

Heidi Montag’s plastic surgeon was reportedly texting before his car plunged off a cliff on Monday. By Gil Kaufman Frank Ryan Photo: Jordan Strauss/WireImage In one of the starkest reminders to date of the dangers of texting while driving, the late celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Ryan was reportedly tweeting about his dog just before his car plunged off a cliff in Malibu on Monday. Ryan, best known for performing several surgeries on “The Hills” star Heidi Montag, was killed when his 1995 Jeep Wrangler fell off the side of the twisty Pacific Coast Highway and fell on its roof. Ex-girlfriend Charmaine Blake told People magazine that Ryan was sending out a Twitter message about his border collie, Jill, just before his crash. “He lived up in Malibu on a tiny street, and he was texting while driving, and he accidentally went over the cliff,” she told the magazine. Blake added that Ryan’s family was told by crash investigators that the texting caused the wreck. A California Highway Patrol spokesperson confirmed for People that Ryan was texting before the crash, but investigators have not yet determined the official cause of the accident. The dog was ejected from the car, but survived, sustaining head, eye and paw injuries. The New York Daily News reprinted what it claims are Ryan’s final texts. “After 25 years of driving by, I finally hiked to the top of the giant sand dune on the [Pacific Coast Highway] west of Malibu. Much harder than it looks! Whew!” he reportedly wrote. That missive was followed by a photo of Jill looking out at the Pacific Ocean with the caption, “Border collie jill surveying the view from atop the sand dune.” Celebrity publicist Blake, 29, who lived with Ryan from 2003-2006, said she remained close to the surgeon and hoped that his death will remind people that they “should not text and drive at all.” TMZ reported that the 50-year-old doctor was trapped inside his vehicle and suffered from major head injuries. He was pronounced dead after Ventura County Fire Department officials tried to lift him out of the wreckage with a helicopter. In addition to famously working on “Hills” star Montag, Ryan’s other patients included Vince Neil, Gene Simmons, reality-TV personality Adrianne Curry and Lorenzo Lamas. Montag took to her Twitter page to express her condolences. “I am devastated to hear the news of Dr. Frank Ryan’s death,” Montag wrote on Tuesday. “He was the most amazing person I have ever known. He was an angel and changed my life and the lives of everyone he met. He was the most brilliant talented surgeon who will ever exist. Dr. Frank Ryan changed the world.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Heidi Montag

Shawty Lo Calls Off Engagement, Drops New Mixtape

‘I want a whole new look on everything I got going,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Shawty Lo Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : Bowen Homes Carlos Headliner : Shawty Lo Key Cameos : “The Kitchen” (featuring Yo Gotti), “WTF” (featuring Lil Wayne) and “Say Yeah” (featuring Snoop Dogg) Essential Info : Shawty Lo is cleaning house. He phoned in Tuesday to discuss the changes he’s made in his life. First is his label: It will no longer be called D4L Records. “That’s my brand, that’s where I started from,” he said of D4L. “But I’m officially switching my label to 2610: BHF. ‘BHF’ meaning Bowens Home family. 2610 is [the address] where we started from, D4L.” Lo said the name D4L had a stigma to it that some didn’t take as seriously as he wanted. “I just want a fresh look,” he said. “I feel like I got a whole new movement. And I feel the D4L got a curse on it. People think it’s the dancing, the snap [music]. I just wanna get a whole new look. I had a 10-year relationship and everything. I want a whole new look on everything I got going.” That decade-long relationship to his love Ecreia Perez was highlighted by an engagement earlier this summer . But one month after he popped the question, Lo said he broke things off. “Things happen. I can’t point no fingers,” Lo said. “We were separated, the engagement lasted probably a month. It was a 10-year relationship, I love her still, but it’s time to move on. It’s over. I’m finnin’ to move on. I got everything new going for me.” Shawty won’t say exactly what led to their breakup, other than alluding to the fact that Perez disappointed him. “Something happened that I found out,” he said. “Me, being a man, you just can’t deal with certain stuff, put up with certain stuff. So, you know, it’s better for us to separate. I can’t talk about it. That my daughter’s mother. I got much respect for her. … [But] yeah, I’m single right now.” On Tuesday, Shawty put out his Gangsta Grillz mixtape, Bowen Homes Carlos. “It’s crazy, man,” he said. “It’s probably my biggest mixtape. I worked so hard on it. My projects, Bowen Homes, was tore down. ” ‘Tunnel Vision’ is crazy,” he added about the tape. “That’s one song I leaked by mistake, and it caught. ‘Tunnel Vision’ means I’m focused now. This is all I see, and I’m going forward. I just released another video on ‘Tunnel Vision.’ There was one that was released by Jordan Towers, it wasn’t official, but I appreciate him for doing that. ‘Dey Say Where You Been,’ that’s with me and Stuntman. It’s been out for a minute, but I had to put it out on my mixtape, because everywhere I go, they ask about Stuntman. ‘Amazing,’ that’s gonna be the crossover record. I kinda did the Auto-Tune thing, the T-Pain thing on there. If you listen to the first verse, I’m kinda talking about what happened in my relationship. But I’m amazing. Shawty L.O. is amazing. Bowen Homes Carlos is here, believe that.” Outside of his music, Shawty is releasing a cologne in about a month called Lo Seduction: “It’s a very nice smell for the men. It’s been something I’ve been working on for a little over a year now. It took 13 different smells to get it where I wanted it to be. It can go unisex.” Other Heat This Week

Trae Tha Truth Gives Back With Trae Day, New Mixtape

‘Sometimes people need a soldier to lean on and give them that hope and motivation,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Trae Tha Truth Photo: ABN Cornerstone Credentials: Trae Tha Truth Trae Tha Truth proudly reps his crew name ABN (that’s A-holes by Nature) but when it comes to the kids, he’s anything but. The Texas truth speaker gives his all. There was footage that Trae showed us personally of him visiting a paralyzed kid in a hospital that had your favorite hip-hop editor turning on the waterworks. The youngster was moved by Trae’s music and started to try to dance. Trae’s fans are gearing up for his proper LP, Tha Truth, but before that, they’ll get a mixtape. He just finished his latest, Can’t Ban Tha Truth. The title has to do with his lawsuit with Radio One, and the content has everything to do with the streets. Look for guest spots from Young Buck and Lupe Fiasco on the project. A few weeks back, Trae held his annual Trae Day event in Houston where he gave back to the kids, with school supplies, carnival rides, immunizations and music. Lupe and Buck were there to support as well, as were Gorilla Zoe, Jody Breeze, NBA star Stephen Jackson, adult-film star Pinky and Yo Gotti. “As soon as we started to perform, it started raining,” Jae Millz recalled. He was there with his Young Money family Lil Chuckee, Lil Twist, Gudda Gudda, Shawt Dog and Shanell. “It started pouring. It was already on and off rain, but we still rocked anyway. Everybody came out to rock for Trae Day. This is big, man. Everybody needs to have a little bit more of this in their state. They out here. [The fans] stood out here in the rain for him. He had a jungle gym, a Ferris wheel, he did this on his own. That’s love. You don’t get too many artists like this. When you come across an artist like this and he rocks with you, you rock with him, you support him. The people stayed. Parking lot still full.” “We do this: rain, sleet or snow,” Yo Gotti laughed about the inclement weather. “Nothing is gonna stop us from doing that. “It’s a good cause,” Gotti added. “He’s been doing [Trae Day] for a few years, for the kids. He’s my homeboy too. He said he’s gonna put it together, he wanted me to come out, I’m here.” “This is one of the most beautiful individuals that I’ve come into contact in the music business,” Lupe Fiasco said. “He’s a trusted friend, partner, family. Anything I can do to show support, especially something as beautiful as Trae Day and what it stands for — getting kids prepared to go back to school, immunizations, HIV testing — that’s what I do. Any time I see somebody do that, I’m on it.” For Trae, he said he tries to make the event bigger every year. “It’s pressure, man. At the end of the day, it makes me proud that even though the rain came out, they stayed out here for the supplies, they stayed out here with the homie,” Trae said. “We got to be able to touch the people, touch their hearts and give them a smile, because that’s what they need. People think it’s about money. … Sometimes people need a soldier to lean on and give them that hope and motivation. So that’s what I do every Trae Day. Even though it’s my holiday, I made it a holiday for the city.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Videos Mixtape Daily: Freddie Gibbs

Same AP Reporter Produces Two Decidedly Different Reports on Retail Sales Within Seven Hours

I was quite surprised to see the difference in tone between two different Associated Press reports on retail sales Thursday. The earlier article, unbylined and time-stamped at 10:43 a.m. at MSNBC (HT Hot Air ), has the headline “Nation’s retailers post tepid June sales” and this subheadline: “Concerns about back-to-school shopping, health of recovery.” It is decidedly downbeat. The later AP item, with Anne D’Innocienzio’s byline and time-stamped at 4:59 p.m. at the AP’s main site , is headlined “Retailers post choppy June, deepen discounts.” Compared to the morning story, this account is largely sanitized of macroeconomic negativity and dour words. Imagine my surprise when I found a bylined version of the earlier report — time-stamped at 9:37 a.m. Mountain Time (11:37 ET) at an Idaho TV station’s web site — and learned that Ms. D’Innocenzio also wrote that report. Who fed this woman happy pills during the afternoon? Here are some key paragraphs from the AP retail writer’s morning offering (negative words bolded; number tags are mine): Americans didn’t go on many shopping sprees in June, resulting in sluggish sales [1] for many retailers. It often took deeply discounted clothing to get shoppers to spend – and then only if they needed it. The lackluster performance [1] , being compared with a weak June 2009, is raising concerns about the back-to-school shopping season [2] and the health of the economic recovery [3] . The International Council of Shopping Centers’ index of June retail sales saw a 3 percent increase, the low end of its growth forecast that ranged from 3 to 4 percent. But that’s compared with a 5.1 percent decline in the year-ago period. The figures are based on revenue at stores open at least a year and are a key indicator of retailers’ health. … After ramping up spending surprisingly in the first quarter, shoppers have hunkered down since April. Some worry they’ll continue to be tight-fisted through the holiday shopping season [2]. … June is a time when stores clear out summer goods to make room for back-to-school merchandise. But analysts say discounting was heavier than expected as stores had to work hard to pull in shoppers continuing to grapple with a deluge of financial issues [4]. Such deeper-than-planned discounting resulted in some stores, including American Eagle Outfitters and Wet Seal, trimming profit forecasts Thursday. … Uncertainty is growing as evidence mounts – from disappointing housing data to sluggish hiring – that the recovery is stalling heading into the second half of 2010 [5]. And that is when the benefits of most of the government’s stimulus spending will begin to fade. Now compare the previous excerpted verbiage to what follows from D’Innocenzio’s afternoon item: Stores deepened discounts more than planned in June to draw recession-scarred shoppers to buy summer tops and other merchandise . But shoppers bought mostly items they needed, resulting in small revenue gains. The mixed results [1] from June, released Thursday, are raising concerns about the back-to-school season [2] and consumers’ ability and willingness to hit the accelerator on spending. … The third straight month of modest sales gains [1] after a surprisingly solid start to the year underscores t he choppiness of the economic recovery [3] and puts more pressure on retailers to come up with innovative tactics to get shoppers to spend in the critical months ahead, instead of just resorting to price slashing. … Merchants’ come-ons are great news for deal seekers – if they have the means to spend. [4] … After ramping up spending surprisingly in the first quarter, shoppers have hunkered down since April, going out to stores only to buy necessities. The volatile economic environment has made business uneven from week to week, and economists don’t see that changing until American businesses start making significant hiring. Uncertainty is growing as evidence mounts – from disappointing housing data to sluggish hiring – that the recovery is stalling heading into the second half of 2010 [5] . And that is when the benefits of most of the government’s stimulus spending will begin to fade. Here’s how the tagged items compare in the two reports:

‘Eclipse’ Stars Surprise Fans At Theater Screenings

Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Nikki Reed and other ‘Twilight Saga’ actors made appearances around the country over the holiday weekend. By Terri Schwartz Ashley Greene Photo: Didier Messens/ WireImage This was a very special Fourth of July weekend for “Twilight” fans, because the long weekend meant that the stars of “The Twilight Saga” films were going to be making surprise appearances at movie theaters around the country. The full list of cities (ranging from Detroit to Atlanta to Kona, Hawaii) went up on Friday , but which stars would be appearing wasn’t known until after they showed up in theaters. The biggest surprise of the weekend was when Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart greeted fans Monday night after an IMAX screening of “Eclipse” in Century City, California. “We just wanted to come and say thank you in person for making this such a great weekend,” Stewart said. Pattinson added, “I hope you liked the movie, because otherwise this would really embarrassing.” The two left quickly, but considering there was a lot of doubt that the Big Two would actually go out, the fans didn’t seem to mind. It was a cap to an exciting weekend that started with appearances Friday. Dakota Fanning also didn’t stray far from home when she made an appearance at a Los Angeles cinema, and Justin Chon only ventured down to Orange County, California. Kiowa Gordon (Embry Call) and BooBoo Stewart (Seth) went to Las Vegas, while Tyson Houseman (Quil Ateara) journeyed out of the country to Vancouver. On the other side of the country, Gil Birmingham (Billy Black) went to Kansas City to greet fans, while Tinsel Korey (Emily) went to Nashville, Christian Serratos (Angela) went to Washington, D.C., and Julia Jones (Leah Clearwater) went to Chicago. Charlie Bewley (Demetri) visited a screening in Minneapolis , telling fans at the not-quite-full Rosedale AMC theater that he was “forced to watch it at the premiere, but it was really good. I’m not the kind of guy that would go and watch ‘Twilight’ if I wasn’t in the movie … but I was really impressed with this one.” The appearances continued on Saturday, with Bewley heading over to screenings in New Jersey, Jones heading to San Francisco and Serratos to Dallas. Cameron Bright (Alec) visited three theaters in Atlanta, Jodelle Ferland (Bree) headed down to New Orleans, and Bronson Pelletier (Jared) visited theaters in Cleveland and Detroit. Taylor Lautner surprised fans at an unscheduled appearance in Pittsburgh, and Peter Facinelli traveled down to Kona, Hawaii. Nikki Reed and Xavier Samuel, who had just returned from promoting the film in Europe, went to theaters in Long Island and Manhattan, respectively. Reed answered fan questions for about 10 minutes, sharing that she was so Team Edward when they were filming “Twilight” that she was in the middle of reading “New Moon,” when Edward leaves Bella, and she found herself running around the set looking for Pattinson, thinking, “where’s Rob? I just need to see him and make sure he’s still here.” After one bad heartbreak in her life, though, she said she finds herself more aligned with Team Jacob because it’s “healthier.” There were only two scheduled appearances on Sunday, but fans said Bright didn’t make it to Toronto where he was supposed to make an appearance. Ashley Greene did head to her hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, where she spent time talking to fans and signing autographs. “I just wanted to say, thank you so much for coming to see our movie. We’re really, really proud of this film,” she told the crowd . “Thank you guys.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
