An unusual thing happened to Kal Penn on the way to stardom: in April 2009, after making two successful franchise-starting Harold & Kumar comedies, appearing in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns , and co-starring on TV’ s House , the rising actor opted to take a two-year sabbatical from Hollywood to work in the Obama administration. This week, he returns to screens as Kumar to John Cho’s Harold in A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas , which finds the former hamburger-seeking BFF s facing new, daunting life changes and, in the spirit of the holidays, renewing their friendship the old fashioned way: With giant spliffs, babies on drugs, and Claymation.
JB was inspired by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men — also collaborators on the album — to make a holiday EP. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber managed to deck the halls and stack the decks when it came to collaborations for his November 1 holiday album, Under the Mistletoe, with everyone from Mariah Carey and Usher to Boyz II Men and the Band Perry — and even Busta Rhymes! — popping up on the record. And some of those collaborators are even behind the idea for Bieber making a Christmas album in the first place, as he revealed to us during Tuesday’s “MTV First” premiere of his “Mistletoe” video . “I love Boyz II Men’s Christmas album, I love Mariah Carey’s Christmas album, and luckily enough, I got them both on my album,” he said. “So that was amazing. I wanted to make a Christmas album that everyone would remember. Those are albums that people remember, so to have them be able to collaborate with me was incredible.” Another collabo Bieber is excited about is his version of “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)” with mentor Usher, which he revealed Wednesday (October 19) on Facebook would be the next single to arrive. Bieber thanked his fans for their support of the “Mistletoe” video, writing, “u guys got it to #1 worldwide. … and next tuesday we are putting out THE CHRISTMAS SONG (Chesnuts) with Usher!!” The song is a mixed bag of original tunes as well as brand-new songs Bieber hopes will one day become classics. “I just picked my favorite Christmas songs. I picked ‘Silent Night,’ I picked ‘Santa [Claus Is] Coming to Town,’ because everyone loves those songs. Those are classics,” he said. “They get people excited for Christmas,” he continued. “And then, for songs that we wrote, we wanted to make enough new songs for people to hear new music and not just hear some classics. There’s a lot of new stuff on there.” Considering that the holidays are the perfect time to give back, portions of the sales from the album will go to charities like Pencils of Promise and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. But Bieber isn’t waiting until then to give back: “We donated $10,000 to the food bank where I grew up, and I used to actually get food from there,” he said. “It was an incredible feeling, just because they were needing a lot of stuff, and it made me feel good.” What’s your favorite Christmas album? Beyond her new album, singer tells MTV News she might act next year. By Jocelyn Vena Photo: MTV News The new year might still be a few months off, but the always-ambitious Taylor Swift is already cooking up some big projects for 2012. With her new album , full of “sad” songs, already in the planning stages, Swift excitedly dished that it’s not the only big thing she has up her sleeve for next year. Her arena-filling, celeb-frequented Speak Now Tour continues chugging along through the early part of 2012, and her perfume, Wonderstruck , is now out on the market, giving fans the chance to smell like the pop star. But, Swift is also making time for some other projects she thinks will have her fans excited. The singer told MTV News she’s working on “some surprise projects that may or may not happen, and possibly some acting.” “I’ve just been so excited about what’s gonna happen in the next year,” she said. “I’m also really excited about [the next album]. I’ve been writing all the time. I’ve been writing so much for the new record. I can’t believe I’m saying that already: It comes out in a year, but I’m already excited about it.” Before we officially ring in the new year, Swift shared that she’s looking forward to the tail end of 2011, with the holidays and her 22nd birthday still to celebrate. “I’m excited about the holidays,” she said. “I love Christmas. ‘We were all just so starstruck,’ she tells MTV News of performing with the rapper in Atlanta earlier this month. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: MTV News Over the course of her arena-filling Speak Now tour , Taylor Swift has been performing with some of her favorite artists. Many of the pair-ups have been with artists you might expect — Usher, Justin Bieber , Hayley Williams — but some are more likely to have you scratching your head. A swaggered-out Swift has been displaying her street cred by chilling with rappers like Nicki Minaj, T.I. and B.o.B during several of her tour stops. But it’s not all that bizarre considering Swift is a big fan of the genre. “I’m a huge hip-hop fan, and it’s been so amazing to have so many incredible artists come out and to get to sing the hooks on their songs that I’ve been blasting in my car for the last couple years,” she told MTV News at the launch event for her Wonderstruck perfume . “It’s been awesome. I couldn’t have asked for more amazing special guests on this tour, and we’re not finished yet.” When asked who she was most surprised by, she shared that it was T.I. The rapper joined Swift onstage in October, just days after finishing his 11-month prison sentence , to perform “Live Your Life.” “Well, I called T.I. the night before the show, so I felt like it’s such short notice that [he wouldn’t do it with me], and he’s just like, ‘Hey, yeah, sure,’ ” she recalled. “And it was just amazing. I was so excited ’cause I’m such a fan and I thought, ‘This is such short notice, this is so ridiculous’ that I’m asking him to do this the night before. And he’s like, ‘I’ll be there,’ ” she continued. “And he showed up for sound check and we were all just so star-struck.” The headline-making Atlanta appearance marked the beginning of T.I.’s return to public life. He’s currently releasing music (including his new single, “I’m Flexin’ ” ), working on a clothing line, Akoo and is planning to take over pop with an in-the-works remix of Ke$ha’s “Sleazy.” Swift’s Speak Now world tour continues through March 2012, with a break around the holidays in November and December. Band will make new songs available to fans strictly on their website and say new music is on the horizon. By James Montgomery Paramore’s Hayley Williams Photo: MTV You’ve got to hand it to Paramore : They keep their promises. After kicking off 2011 by telling MTV News they’d “definitely” release new music in spite of the departure of Josh and Zac Farro, they spent the ensuing months teasing fans with demo clips and live versions of those songs (not to mention one brand-new single, “Monster,” ). Now Paramore have finally announced plans to release the tunes … via a good old-fashioned “Singles Club.” “For months now, we’ve promised that we’d be releasing some new songs before the end of the year. Well, here is where we finally make good on all that,” the band wrote in a statement on their official site . “We are very happy to announce the ‘Paramore Singles Club’ that will be happening throughout the rest of the year. This club is our way of getting these songs directly to the Paramore family.” The band is making three new songs available — “In the Mourning,” “Renegades” and a brand-new, previously unreleased track called “Hello Cold World” — to fans in a variety of specially priced packages. Everything from a bare-bones download ($2.99) to a deluxe download/ T-shirt bundle that also comes with a limited-edition 7″ box set due for release at the end of the year (the latter option will run you $54.99). In a few weeks, Paramore will drop one new song, “Renegades,” which the band premiered live at last month’s Fueled by Ramen 15th-anniversary celebration in New York, is the first out of the gate. And though the new tunes will no doubt satiate fans, Paramore also let it be known that there’s even more music coming in the near future … because they plan to hit the studio soon to begin work on the follow-up to 2009’s Brand New Eyes. “We really wanted to do something special for all of you around the holidays to thank you for making 2011 so amazing and sticking with us as we go into 2012 and start working on a new album,” they wrote. “So, without making this any longer than it already is, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for believing in us.” Related Videos Paramore: The Complete Interview Related Artists Paramore

JT ‘might write songs about putting things in boxes,’ but ‘he … definitely doesn’t make a habit of taking any photos of them,’ co-stars’ statement reads. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis in “Friends With Benefits” Photo: Glen Wilson/ Sony Pictures Last week, the Internet was buzzing with news that nude photos of Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis had leaked. Although the reportedly scandalous four photos never actually hit the Net, one was said to feature Kunis in a bathtub, while Timberlake appeared in another two. The “Friends With Benefits” co-stars, however, are laughing it all off. “At no time did Mr. Timberlake and Ms. Kunis exchange inappropriate texts or emails. … The insistence that there is any inappropriate correspondence between the two parties is entirely false, ” a lengthy statement to People reads. The co-stars go on to add, “We would like to confirm that the photo addressed in the media of Ms. Kunis was in fact not from any phone but from an inactive email account that has not existed in three years. In regards to the other photos in question, they were never exchanged between the two parties.” Like Scarlett Johansson, whose private nude pics recently hit the Net, the actors are working with authorities to nail down the hackers who gained possession of their personal photos. But Kunis and Timberlake also showed they have a sense of humor, writing, “In closing, Mr. Timberlake would like us to make it clear that while he might write songs about putting things in boxes, he never has and definitely doesn’t make a habit of taking any photos of them and sending them,” referring to Timberlake ‘s hit “Saturday Night Live” sketch “D— in a Box.” Ms. Kunis would like us to add that while she is a fan of the song, she does not have nor has ever had photos of any male parts in her possession.” In the 2006 “SNL” sketch, Justin joins castmember Andy Samberg and his Lonely Island crew for a song about giving their loved ones the gift of “themselves” for the holidays.
