Jacob Lusk Shows Off His ‘American Idol’ Happy Dance

‘I have a problem,’ he jokes to MTV News about his moves. ‘Pray for me.’ By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Kara Warner Jacob Lusk Photo: 2011 Getty Images The judges on “American Idol” have marveled at the vocal force of Jacob Lusk ever since the gospel-drenched singer blew them away during Hollywood Week . But Lusk isn’t just a potential heir to the Luther Vandross velvet-ballad throne; he’s also a dance machine. On Thursday night, after he and 12 other “Idol” singers made it into the show’s top 13, Lusk showed off his now-signature celebration hoofing . “It’s just a happy dance. When I get happy, it starts off with a stomp, and then I just kind of get a little carried away,” he smiled when asked to demonstrate the move. “It usually happens in church. That’s kind of where it stemmed from, is from church. … I kind of have no boundaries. I have a problem. Pray for me,” he joked about his moves and how the “Idol” ride so far has inspired him to mix in some dancing with his singing. But when it comes to those rich vocals, Lusk said he has a plan for sounding modern without losing his old-school roots. “I want to stay contemporarily classic,” he explained. “For me, whatever music I sing, it doesn’t matter as long as when I’m finished singing that I’ve touched you, that something’s affected you. You can do that with a club joint, you can do that with a ballad … but I’m definitely going to try and mix it up a little bit as the season continues on.” Lusk will get another chance to be himself on Wednesday, when the top 13 take the stage for the first round of live performance and results shows and get a taste of the pressure that comes with singing on live TV every week. New Kids On The Block’s Jordan Knight Releases Dance Track ‘Let’s Go Higher’

‘With the New Kids, I loved the ballads. I was all about ballads. I’m not really into ballads anymore,’ Knight says. By Jocelyn Vena Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images Jordan Knight’s new single “Let’s Go Higher” was released Tuesday (March 1), and it’s a chugging club tune about hitting the dance floor with that special someone. The New Kids on the Block singer hooked up with onetime Lady Gaga collaborator Colby O’Donis, who wrote the song with the Knight in mind and felt it was the perfect track to re-launch his solo career. “I had a track and I really liked this track. I needed a writer to see if they could put some good idea over it,” Knight said of another song he had been working on. “I was always talking about Colby O’Donis. He’s got a great vibe,” he recalled, adding that O’Donis had something else in mind for the pop star. “He sent [it] and it was produced by him in his studio, so the production wasn’t exactly where I wanted it. But I could recognize the song as being a really good song with a great hook and great message,” he said. Knight first hooked up with the songwriter a year ago before reworking the track with Marcus Siskind. “I’ve been kind of working on a solo record for a year and a half and it just didn’t feel like it was all put together,” Knight explained. “It all fell together now at a great time.” Knight is soaking up the fun, pop vibe that has taken over mainstream radio and will certainly find its way onto his next album. “Higher” is the lead single off Knight’s May solo album release, Unfinished, which drops the same month that New Kids on the Block is set to hit the road with the Backstreet Boys on their highly anticipated joint venture. “There’s a few ballads. It’s not ballad heavy. It does represent well the tone of the album,” he said. “The tone is definitely upbeat. I think a lot of people thought that I would do mid-tempos — Jordan’s the crooner romantic guy — but it’s not really that kind of music. I honestly prefer upbeat music. I prefer doing upbeat music. With the New Kids, I loved the ballads. I was all about ballads. I’m not really into ballads anymore,” he laughed. Related Artists Jordan Knight

Lauren Alaina, Julie Zorrilla Lead ‘American Idol’ 24, Oddsmaker Says

Bodog.com also ranks Paul McDonald and Casey Abrams as tentative favorites. By James Montgomery The “American Idol” top 24 Photo: FOX They’ve already survived Hollywood Week, Las Vegas and even that very long walk down the airplane hangar, but now, the real competition begins. On Tuesday night (March 1), the “American Idol” Top 24 will sing for their lives — guys first, followed by the girls on Wednesday — and it will be up to viewers at home to determine just who moves on. And though there’s still a long way to go until we reach the finals in May, that hasn’t stopped some “Idol” hopefuls from already surging to the front of the field … at least, according to the oddsmakers, that is. With the Top 24 set to tip off, the folks at Bodog.com have just released their odds for each of the remaining contestants, a list that’s topped by early frontrunner (and Steven Tyler favorite) Lauren Alaina , who is a 7/1 favorite to win the season-10 crown. The bubbly teen edges out Julie Zorrilla , whom Bodog has given 15/2 odds; soulful singer Paul McDonald (8/1); and Casey Abrams (9/1). Deep-voiced country crooner Scotty McCreery and Tim Halperin round out the Bodog top 5, each getting 10/1 odds. The Bodog oddsmakers were lukewarm on a few other frontrunners, giving big-voiced gospel standout Jacob Lusk only 12/1 odds to win the season-10 title, followed by likeable heartthrob Stefano Langone and polished, poised Pia Toscano (14/1 odds) and Kendra Chantelle at 15/1. And if you’re a fan of folks like TaTynisa Wilson , Jordan Dorsey or Rachel Zevita , well, you probably won’t be tuning in to “Idol” for very long. Bodog has those three as the biggest long-shots to win the title, with Wilson and Dorsey each getting 40/1 odds and Zevita brining up the rear at 50/1. Steven Tyler Talks ‘Long Road’ To ‘American Idol’ Top 24

‘Idol’ judge tells MTV News ‘it’s heartbreaking’ to let go of hopefuls with loads of ‘character’ but OK voices. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Steven Tyler Photo: MTV News Those who’ve been following the revamped 10th season of ratings juggernaut “American Idol” know that the addition of new judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler have spiced things up a bit. Particularly in the case of Tyler, who has peppered each episode with his colorful musings, mugging for the cameras, and interactions with contestants and fellow judges. When MTV News spoke to the Aerosmith frontman during NBA All-Star weekend, we asked how he’s doing, now that they’ve narrowed the thousands of “Idol” hopefuls down to a competitive 50. “It was a long road whittling it down from 700 [contestants] to 400, then Hollywood Week and then, aw man … letting them go,” Tyler said, adding that it’s particularly difficult to let go of the ones who are OK singers, but potentially great performers. “You know what? Not everybody that’s great sings good. They’ve got character, that certain something you can’t put your finger on,” he explained. “And man, when they sing, look out. A lot of these kids have got it, but we have to let them go and it’s heartbreaking.” Tyler went on to say that his road to success in the music industry was paved with a few more hard knocks than the “Idol” contestants have to endure. “I didn’t watch ‘Idol’ because I grew up from, you had to play clubs. If you don’t play in front of the people and get your hard knocks from that and get booed, [you don’t learn] how to stand up when you fall back down,” he said before likening himself and judges Lopez and Randy Jackson as the “American Idol” school of hard knocks. “[When] they’re in front of us,” he said of the contestants. “We’re the club.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

‘American Idol’ Judges Show Jacee Badeux Some ‘Mercy’

The 15-year-old ‘Idol’ hopeful flubbed lyrics after being tossed from group but pluck pushes him through to next round. By Adam Graham Jacee Badeaux at “American Idol” Hollywood Week Photo: FOX Jacee Badeaux doesn’t have typical “American Idol” looks or style, but he’s fast becoming a favorite in season 10 of the competition. Badeaux, the portly 15-year-old viewers were first introduced to when he blew the judges away with his unexpectedly soulful take on Otis Redding’s “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” during the New Orleans auditions, was the center of a whirlwind drama on Wednesday’s (February 16) episode. He bounced around looking to find his place during Hollywood Week’s notorious group round, and was tossed from his original foursome (with Clint Jun Gamboa, Monique de Los Santos and Frances Coontz) when floating country crooner Scotty McCreery joined their ranks. Of course, it was Jacee who’d first given the thumbs-up to allow McCreery to link up with them. Left without a group at 1 a.m. on the night before the big group auditions, a teary-eyed Badeaux sought the comfort of his parents. “It’s OK, baby,” his mother told him. “Either way, it just wasn’t meant to be.” Mom turned out to know best, and Badeaux quickly fell in with another group, led by fellow outcast Brett Loewenstern , the mop-topped, red-haired singer whose tales of being bullied have been well-documented this season. Despite the fact that he’d never heard Duffy’s “Mercy,” which the group had been rehearsing for hours, Badeaux joined them and began learning the song. But the rehearsal time wasn’t quite enough for Badeaux, who made no secret of the fact that he didn’t know the words when he hit the rehearsal stage. So to the tune of Duffy’s 2008 hit, a smiling Badeaux sang, “I don’t wanna go home, yeah yeah/ But this is really fun, yeah yeah/ But I’m gonna do this, ’cause I know that I won’t be going home … hopefully.” When asked by the judges why he didn’t know his parts, he told his story of being kicked out of his first group late the night before and began to well up with tears. As his fellow contestants in the audience rose to their feet and gave him a standing ovation, Randy Jackson noted, “Jacee, you got some fans out there, dude.” And despite flubbing the lyrics — usually a death knell at this point in the competition — the judges let him through to the next round. But that wasn’t it for Badeaux. Next up was the group that unceremoniously dismissed Jacee, and McCreery — who had essentially replaced him in the group — came clean to the judges’ panel and to his fellow contestants. “I just wanna go on the record and say, for me personally, I wanna apologize for not sticking up for [Badeaux],” he said. ” ‘Cause I love all of y’all, but Jacee’s the best kid in this competition.” After his mea culpa, McCreery and his fellow groupmates made it through as well. But now that Badeaux is building momentum, his biggest obstacle could be himself, and learning the pesky words to those songs. What do you think of Jacee Badeaux? Let us know in the comments! Judging the Judges’ Save on American Idol: Did Justice Prevail?

Hooray! Not so much? This week, American Idol ‘s voters grew a pair and almost eliminated a dude . The new father Lynche, whose wife enjoyed a very famous cervix during Hollywood Week, lives to meet mentor Adam Lambert . Are we happy for Big Mike’s triumph?

Didi Benami It took no time for Didi Benami to establish her “American Idol” identity: the resident weepy mess. From her initial audition in Denver to almost every single interview on the “Idol” stage, the sensitive singer/songwriter has shed a tear. Tears of joy, tears of mourning, tears of stress. But Didi saves the real emotion for her passionate performances, connecting to lyrics unlike any other singer this season. Best Performance : Didi helped put money in Kara DioGuardi’s pocket when she covered the judge’s song during Hollywood Week brilliantly. Tuesday night, however, Didi busted out the big guns — Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon” — and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. In the last chance before top 12, Didi picked the right week to remind viewers what she’s capable of. Perhaps she held back on her guitar-playing skills during the first two semifinal performances on purpose? Weakest Performance : Didi’s Ingrid Michaelson cover was more fragile than a Faberg
