‘We felt like we was teaching America about a part of itself that they don’t see,’ Cube tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ade Mangum Ice Cube Photo: MTV News “Either they don’t know, don’t show, or don’t care about what’s going on in the ‘hood.” In that line lays the crux of John Singleton’s 1991 film “Boyz N the Hood.” Delivered by Ice Cube’s character, Doughboy, those words ring as true today, 20 years later, as they did when the film first hit theaters. Released on July 12 of that year, “Boyz N the Hood” was a gritty, cinematic depiction of the lives of three young African-American men growing up in inner-city Los Angeles. On Wednesday’s (July 13) “RapFix Live,” Ice Cube broke down the cultural significance of the film that launched his acting career. “When we first did the movie ‘Boyz N the Hood,’ we felt like we was teaching America about a part of itself that they don’t see,” he explained. “We was teaching you about people like Doughboy and why he is the way he is.” But while Cube’s Doughboy was an unapologetic gangster who couldn’t see a way out of the ‘hood and the gang culture that consumed him, his half-brother Ricky Baker (Morris Chestnut) used football as a means to earn a college scholarship that might ultimately take him out of the ghetto. Their friend Tre, played by Cuba Gooding Jr., struggled to balance the life lessons that his father (Laurence Fishburne) passed onto him with the reality of the streets. And for Cube, the circumstances addressed in the movie still ring true after two decades. “The movie holds up. The movie had been used as a tool to teach people about the ‘hood that they may not know about,” he said. “I think the movie is a definite classic, it definitely holds up, it’s definitely as potent today as it was back then. Every now and then a movie hits the big screen that makes you laugh, cry and ponder. It steals about two hours of your life and holds onto it for a lifetime. While I didn’t cry over the Wayans Brothers’ Don’t Be A Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood I did laugh until my kidneys felt like they would burst. It was one of the moments in black cinema when poking fun at our own culture and blockbuster history was done perfectly and perfectly acceptable. The Wayans brothers released this hood classic in 1996 spoofing popular movies: Juice , Jungle Fever , South Central , Higher Learning , Do The Right Thing , Poetic Justice , New Jack City , Dead Presidents , Friday , Boyz N the Hood and Menace II Society. It was written by Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans and Phil Beauman and produced by Keenen Ivory Wayans. Ash Tray and Loc Dog embarked on a typical day of being black in the hood and all the mayhem that could incur there after. The Detroit rapper calls his mentor ‘one of the most nicest people out the hood.’ By Alvin Blanco Big Sean Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News Plenty of people have opinions about Kanye West , but relatively few can say they formed them by being part of the rapper/producer’s inner circle. Big Sean has been running with Kanye since the Chicago hip-hop superstar was recording his third album, 2007’s Graduation. Yesterday on “RapFix Live,” the 2010 XXL magazine Freshmen alum spoke about the trepidation he felt when he first started working with Yeezy. “Being around a legend like that is nerve-racking,” Big Sean told MTV News. “It seemed like everything I brought him he would always be like, ‘Man come on, you need to do better, you need to do this,’ like when I first signed to him. I was always nervous, like, ‘Dang, he’s going to drop me, he think I’m wack.’ But I worked hard and now when I bring him music he’s like, ‘You going to be the greatest man. Yes, I knew you had it in you.’ He’s definitely the most intimidating person I’ve ever been in the studio with.” Since formally signing to G.O.O.D. Music in 2007, Big Sean has become one of Kanye’s go-to collaborators. Although the Detroit rapper does not drop a verse on Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, he was on a number of the G.O.O.D. Fridays leaks, including “Good Friday,” “Don’t Look Down” and “Looking for Trouble.” Sean also was present for the album’s storied recording sessions in Hawaii, and shared one of its most humorous moments involving Kanye. “The atmosphere there was crazy,” Sean said. “One of the funniest stories of all time was when Kanye was making a beat in front of everybody in the room.
