‘X-Men: First Class’: Meet The Mutants

James McAvoy, Kevin Bacon and more of the film’s stars lead us through this new batch of X-Men. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Eric Ditzian James McAvoy in “X-Men: First Class” Photo: 20th Century Fox With “X-Men: First Class” being the fourth “X-Men” film released this decade, you might think you know a thing or two about our favorite friendly (and not-so-friendly) neighborhood mutants, but the latest installment of the franchise, out Friday (June 3), is here to prove you wrong. MTV News caught up with the stars of the summer blockbuster recently, and they were more than willing to clear up any preconceived notions we might have had about their characters. “Professor Charles Xavier, when we meet him, is actually Dr. Charles Xavier, but he becomes a professor during the course of the movie,” James McAvoy clarified. “His power is he can read, bend and manipulate your mind, and his relationship with Erik [a.k.a. Magneto] is probably the closest relationship he’s ever had.” “Erik Lehnsherr-slash-Magneto, he is ruthless, intelligent, charming and adaptable,” Michael Fassbender teased. Jennifer Lawrence explained how her character, Raven Darkholme/ Mystique, is connected to the two main men. “Magneto to her is kind of this iconic man that’s kind of the crush that she’s always had and she admires him very much. And Charles [Xavier] has always been like a brother to her,” Lawrence said. There are quite a few new characters to add to the mix as well, most notably Kevin Bacon as bad guy Sebastian Shaw, the head of the Hellfire Club. “My power is to be able to absorb energy and harness it and throw it back at whoever is trying to use that energy against me,” Bacon explained to MTV. Then there’s Emma Frost, played by January Jones, who is Shaw’s right-hand woman. “Her powers are twofold,” Jones explained. “She has the mental capacity to read minds or control them, and then also, physically, she can change into a diamond form, which makes her physically indestructible.” Some other new characters are Zoe Kravitz’s Angel Salvadore, a go-go dancer who is able to sprout wings, and Lucas Till’s Havoc, a liability who has no control over the beams he can sprout from his body. You can bet there are plenty more mutants that join the first class, but you’ll have to meet them on your own in theaters now. Lucky Don Says Maino Inspired Him To Leave Streets For The Studio

Brooklyn spitter tells Mixtape Daily success of onetime fellow inmate Maino proved he still ‘had a chance.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ade Mangum Lucky Don Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Lucky Don Brooklyn spitter Lucky Don had dreams that not even his 10-year jail bid could derail. “I knew how to rap before I went to jail,” he tells Mixtape Daily. “I always knew how to rap.” With the chips stacked against him, Luck found inspiration in BK rapper Maino , whom he met while the two were locked up in New York’s Gowanda Correctional Facility. (Luck was found guilty of shooting at a police officer.) “Me seeing him grow made me feel like I had a chance,” he said. With his mixtape grind in full swing after dropping last year’s DJ Self-hosted The Voice, Don linked up with his friend Maino, as well as Bronx rapper Fred the Godson on the TY Fyffe-produced “Let’s Go (Remix).” The original version of the song featured Luck by himself, and, at first, he set out to deliver his hardest raps over the bouncy club beat. But then he received a bit of friendly advice from the “Hi Hater” MC. “We met up on Atlantic and Bedford [in Brooklyn], I pulled up, put the CD in the car and we were just sitting in his car just listening to the beat over and over again,” Luck recalled. “He was like, ‘Nah, my dude; nah, son. This ain’t one of those beats — later for all that rap stuff right now.’ ” At Maino’s urging, Luck switched up his flow to something that matched the beat. The song soon became so big on New York’s underground that Maino agreed to jump on the remix. Now Don, who’s set to release his second mixtape, The Difference, in June, is finally seeing his dreams come to fruition. “I can’t even lie, I love music, I always loved music. I ain’t gonna sit here and front like, ‘I’m a street n—a and I never really wanted to do this.’ This is what I wanted to do. That other Luck that was locked up and all that, I left him back there. I came home to do music.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists Maino

New Gwen Stacy says ‘it was pretty great to be together’ on ‘The Help’ set when she learned the casting news. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Emma Stone Photo: MTV News WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — In a weird twist of fate, Emma Stone found out she’d be playing Gwen Stacy in the latest installment of “Spider-Man” while on the set of “The Help” co-starring the previous franchise’s Gwen, Bryce Dallas Howard. “I found out while I was on set of ‘The Help,’ ” she said about the Andrew Garfield-starring “Amazing Spider-Man” during “The Help” Q&A session for MTV’s Sneak Peek Week. “It was pretty great to be together for that.” Howard said she was almost as excited about the casting as Stone was. “Representing as redheads!” she proclaimed onstage in front of an excited crowd at the Pacific Design Center. “I’m one of those people that goes online and reads gossip about movies, so pretty early on, there was some buzz,” she said, adding that she stormed into Stone’s trailer the minute she heard the news. “I was stoked.” With so much buzz about the new “Spider-Man” film, it seems that Stone will be just as surprised as fans to see the flick. “I’ve seen nothing, I promise. I’ve seen small action sequences for the 3-D, and it looked terrible,” she joked. “I really haven’t seen [anything].” So what did Stone do to research the role of Gwen — besides leaning on Howard for her first-hand account, of course. “I read a pretty comprehensive ‘Death of the Stacys’ book … and it’s a really amazing book to learn the story of Captain Stacy and Gwen Stacy,” she said. “And I’ve read a various amount of comics.” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? MTV Movie Awards Gift Bag: Something Just For Robert Pattinson!

Jim Cantiello leads you through the year’s swanky swag before Sunday’s show. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Jim Cantiello 2011 MTV Movie Awards gift bag Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News One of the benefits of being behind the scenes in the midst of the madness leading up to the MTV Movie Awards is our fly-on-the-wall vantage point, and we’ve been getting all kinds of insider glimpses into the prep work that goes into the show, including red carpets rolling out, sets being built and lights getting adjusted. On Thursday (June 2), in addition to chatting with host Jason Sudeikis and the finalists of “America’s Best Dance Crew” ahead of Sunday’s big finale, we sent our intrepid reporter Jim Cantiello into the swanky world of swag, where he got a sneak peek at the goodies that make up this year’s official MTV Movie Awards gift bag. One of Jim’s favorite things, i.e. items that were sparkly and/or eye-catching enough for him to pick up, included Murad’s bronzer, which he suggested would be a great get for Robert Pattinson and any of the other “Twilight” castmembers who play pale-skinned vampires. Speaking of “Twilight,” Pro Beauty Tools is gifting celebrities with a bunch of their professional hair-styling tools, the standout being the styling brush used on the set of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.” There are too many goodies to name, but a few of the other highlights include a $50 Starbucks card, Ralph Lauren Fragrances’ Big Pony Collection scents for men and the Romance and Summer Romance for women, a Kobo e-reader loaded with 100 books, a Casio TRYX camera and a two-night stay and specially designed bag from Andaz 5th Avenue. How does this year’s goodie bag compare to past years? Last year’s gifts included season-one DVDs of MTV’s hit “Jersey Shore” and fashion PR maven Kelly Cutrone’s book “If You Have to Cry, Go Outside.” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? Justin Bieber In 3-D Is ‘Insane,’ Jimmy Fallon Says

‘Never Say Never’ star is up for Best Jaw Dropping Moment at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards. By Jocelyn Vena Jimmy Fallon Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber is known for making his fans scream their heads off whenever he’s around, so it’s no surprise that he’s up for Best Jaw Dropping Moment at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards for his 3-D concert spectacular “Never Say Never.” When MTV News caught up with two-time MTV Movie Awards host Jimmy Fallon on the Universal Studios lot, just a stone’s throw from the Gibson Amphitheatre where Sunday’s show will take place, he explained Bieber’s jaw-dropping abilities. “Bieber is just so jaw-dropping because Bieber in 2-D is enough, [but] Bieber in 3-D? Hold on to your horses,” he said of the pop superstar, who is up against James Franco (“127 Hours”), Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page (“Inception”), Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”) and Steve-O (“Jackass 3D”). “It’s insane.” Fallon knows a thing or two about the Movie Awards, since he co-hosted with Kirsten Dunst in 2001 and returned solo in 2005. He’s pretty sure fellow “Saturday Night Live” funnyman Jason Sudeikis, who is tapped to host the show this year, has it in the bag when it comes to hosting. “It’s exciting. The Movie Awards are the most fun. Jason Sudeikis is a great host; he’s going to be great at it,” he said. “I’ve hosted in the past. I hosted with Kirsten Dunst. It’s just a blast. MTV just brings the fun back into movies.” Sudeikis may already know what he’s doing, but he did add some words of encouragement for his buddy: “Jason, you know what to do, buddy. Kick some butt over there.” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? Find out June 5, when the 20th annual show airs live at 9 p.m. ET/PT. ‘Breaking Dawn’ Is A ‘Fulfilling’ Finale, Jackson Rathbone Says

‘It really wraps up the story in such a beautiful way,’ the ‘Twilight’ star tells MTV News. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Jackson Rathbone Photo: MTV News There’s plenty of “Twilight” goodness to look forward to at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards , but what Jackson Rathbone is most looking forward to is the sneak peek of “Breaking Dawn” that his castmates Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner will present during the big show. Rathbone shared his enthusiasm for the final two “Twilight Saga” films when we caught up with him on the set of his new film “Live at the Foxes Den,” describing the finale as “the culmination of this saga, and it really wraps up the story in such a beautiful way. We had the amazing [director] Bill Condon on, and I was very, very excited to play Jasper once again in these films and kind of step up.” Fans who have read the book know Jasper and his lady Alice (Ashley Greene) have a very significant role in the “Breaking Dawn” plot arc, but Rathbone said he was more excited to show off Jasper’s love and devotion to his family in the next two movies than he was for his beefed-up role. “There’s an amazing moment in ‘Breaking Dawn’ – I can’t say which movie, though. I’m sorry, I’m not technically allowed. But there’s a very fulfilling moment for myself as an actor and as a fan of the books and of the film series that you get to see, in the end, really how much these characters love one another and how much they function as a family, even though they are kind of an odd family of vampires. Vegetarian vampires, at that. They’re an odd bunch,” Rathbone said with a laugh. “But, I mean, the way they love and feel about each other and the way they protect and support one another I think is beautiful, so I think we’re going to get to see that happen in ‘Breaking Dawn.’ ” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? Kristen Stewart Vs. Herself: Celebs Pick MTV Movie Awards’ Best Kiss

Robert Pattinson or Taylor Lautner? Before Sunday’s show, we ask which smooch should come out on top. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images Kristen Stewart got to lock lips with both Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson in “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” and it seems like all the — cough, cough — hard work paid off: Both smooches are up for Best Kiss at Sunday’s 2011 MTV Movie Awards . We went straight to Stewart’s fellow celebs to ask: Which lip-lock should come out on top? “Vampire Diaries” star Kat Graham knows a thing or two about hot supernatural guys, and she has a very strong opinion about which kiss rules in “Eclipse”: “I love Taylor Lautner,” she gushed. “He could be making out with a hamburger, and I would be like, ‘Best kiss ever!’ ” Olympian Johnny Weir also seems to be a member of Team Jacob. “Taylor Lautner in that movie was, you know, rocking the sex,” he exclaimed, most likely referencing Lautner’s ever-present abs in the franchise. “X-Men: First Class” actress Rose Byrne is leaning toward Team Edward when it comes to the kisses, even calling out Pattinson’s fan-favorite nickname: “I think it will be RPattz.” Elle Fanning, whose sister Dakota stars in the “Twilight” flicks, concurred with Byrne, reasoning that Stewart’s Bella is “marrying Edward, so you sort of have to pick Edward.” “X-Men” hottie Michael Fassbender might not know Edward from Jacob, but he did pick one of the actors over the other. “I’m just going to go with Robert,” he said. Hilary Duff kept it right in the middle with her choice. “You’re really going for all the tough questions, aren’t you?” she teased. “In the first movie, it was better with Edward, and I think [then] it was better with Jacob,” she said. “Was that politically correct?” Stewart’s “Eclipse” kisses are up against Ellen Page and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“Inception”), Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1”) and Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis (“Black Swan”).
