A snafu at a Minnesota hospital this week resulted in a mom breastfeeding the wrong baby, causing awkwardness and emotional distress for all involved. The mistake occurred after a baby boy at Minneapolis’ Abbott Northwestern Hospital was placed in the wrong bassinet in the nursery, ABC News reports. As a precaution, the baby breastfed by the wrong mom was tested for HIV and hepatitis, and will receive the tests every three months for the next year. The baby has so far tested negative for both diseases . If a child is accidentally fed breast milk from a woman who is not his mother, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends HIV testing. The CDC adds that the risk of HIV transmission through breast milk is small, and the virus is not known to spread through a single bout of breastfeeding. Still, the CDC recommends women with HIV should not breastfeed their children. Neither hepatitis B nor C can be spread through breastfeeding. The baby’s mother,Tammy Van Dyke, told ABC she could not stop crying on the way home from the hospital because of the surprising event that transpired. The incident also left the mother who was accidentally breastfeeding the baby distraught, as she had to wait before hospital staff found her own baby. The hospital gave Van Dyke a letter expressing its sincerest apologies for the infant mix-up, and said it would pay for the baby’s tests going forward.
A member of the nursing staff at King Edward VII Hospital in London reportedly committed suicide after falling for a phone hoax about the pregnant Kate Middleton . Kate Middleton Prank Call Two Australian DJs apparently phoned the hospital pretending to be Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles, the grandmother and father of Prince William. The DJs were dispatched to the Duchess of Cambridge’s personal nursing staff and were given private details regarding the mother-to-be’s condition and care. The distraught nurse who was found dead was the person who initially put the call through to Kate Middleton’s ward. The family has since been contacted. The radio staff apologized for the prank on Wednesday in light of the tragic news and stated that “it was done with light-hearted intentions.” This is deplorable and it’s safe to say there is nothing light-hearted about this incident. The pregnant Kate Middleton is “feeling better” after spending her second day hospitalized by severe morning sickness, but remains there at this time. Prince William, who reportedly spent hours with her yesterday, is “immensely grateful for the good wishes they have received,” a spokesman added. Her parents, Michael and Carole, are reportedly “elated” about William getting Kate Middleton pregnant , but understandably worried about her condition. Carole Middleton and Kate’s sister, Pippa Middleton, also visited the queasy Duchess Tuesday. The Middletons found out Kate was expecting over the weekend when she began vomiting violently and a worried William drove her home to London. Queen Elizabeth II found out later Monday after William and Kate raced to the hospital, where the stricken princess was diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum, or HG. The malady impacts one in 50 expectant moms and can make pregnancy torture, but is not harmful to the baby; some speculate Kate may be expecting twins . Citing royal sources, the Daily Mail reported the Duchess is holding her own “but her symptoms of severe vomiting may last for much of her pregnancy.” Kate, who is 30 and believed to be about 12 weeks pregnant, is expected to remain in the hospital for several more days followed by a “period of rest” at home. She is reportedly on an IV drip to combat her dehydration and taking pills to stop the nausea. Despite sounding like your textbook Twitter hoax, reports that Frankie Muniz suffered a stroke Friday were correct. The actor confirmed as much on Twitter. “I was in the hospital on Friday. I suffered a ‘Mini Stroke,’ which was not fun at all,” Muniz tweeted Tuesday . “Have to start taking care of my body! Getting old!” The Malcolm in the Middle star, who turns 27 tomorrow, did not reveal any more details. He is, however, in good spirits, tweeting about his band Kingsfoil’s upcoming shows. “Next Sunday my band is playing a show close to where I grew up in Teaneck, NJ at Mexicali Live!,” the actor says. “Hope to see my old friends and family!” It’s unclear what a mini-stroke entailed for Muniz, but it must’ve been scary (“not fun” feels like an understatement) and we hope it was just a freak, one-time thing. Her husband was shelling out $10k a month for his wife’s care. And according to Chicago’s CBS 2 News , the damn facility isn’t even trying to admit any guilt in the whole case! Ninety-two year old Catherine McCann has severe Alzheimer’s and is unable to speak or care for herself. While she was at Lutheran Home for the Aged in Arlington Heights, it was discovered that her left ear was infested with maggots. “I was horrified, shocked,” says her husband John McCann, 88. “I thought it was terrible. I’m paying all this money for that kind of care — no way.” Now, her family is suing the nursing home for emotional distress and negligence. “In this case, they allowed Catherine McCann to have a fly get into her ear canal, lay eggs and hatch 57 maggots,” says attorney Henry Gruss, who filed the lawsuit That’s how many maggots Northwest Community Hospital doctors removed from McCann’s ear. Before the surgery, doctors made a videotape to document the infestation. “One of them was just crawling out of the ear,” Gruss says. Mary McCann Stassen says she could barely look the photos of her mother’s ear. “It’s a picture I will never, ever get out of my mind –ever,” she says. Worse yet, she says, was “hearing her scream as they were taking the maggots out of her ear.” The family’s attorney sent some of the maggots to an expert for analysis. The expert concluded they had been in her ear for 2 ½ to 3 days. Since Catherine McCann can’t speak, the only sign of a problem she had given was tugging at her ear, her husband recalled being told. “And once they got the maggots out, that subsided,” McCann says. Catherine McCann has an enlarged ear canal from a surgery performed decades ago and has required periodic flushing of the ear, or antibiotics, for infections. Nine days before the maggots were discovered, McCann was seen by a doctor for treatment for a wax buildup. He prescribed drops four times a day to treat the condition. The nursing home confirmed she was getting the drops with the last dose at 6 p.m. the evening before the maggots were found. Staff said a nursing home aide saw Mrs. McCann scratching her ear on the day of the hospital admission, brought it to the attention of a nurse who saw the larvae and called the nursing home’s medical director. The director decided she should be sent to the hospital. Nursing home officials believe that until that day, the maggots were not big enough for staff to see them. Officials say the home has an excellent reputation and this was an “extraordinarily unusual event” that had never happened there before. They also note that Illinois Department of Public Health found no violations in this case. State officials, however, say that in response to other complaints the home was found to have violated guidelines related to residents’ care and fined $1,100 this month. The hot mess says she was hospitalized last week was due to lung damage from smoking out of a “toxic wooden pipe” … needless to say, it didn’t contain tobacco. Accusations started flying that she’s on heroin, and Jenelle Evans was oddly silent last week on Twitter and went a long time without setting the record straight. Have no fear, though, she’s back with a vengeance now. About her hospitalization, she says, “I was in there for eight cysts on my ovaries. Right one as big as a golf ball. The ambulance came to my house and got me.” “After going to one hospital I had to be transferred to a bigger one four hours away from my home. Long story short I had immediate surgery to get rid of those cysts.” “Also had lung work done do [sic] to smoking out of kieffers TOXIC wooden pipes. Still having to go back to chapel hill next week to get more lab work done.” Kieffer Delp, her ex-boyfriend, was selling pipes via a website at one point. The heroin story originated from Jenelle’s former roommate Ashleigh, as well as a woman in the hospital who claimed the MTV star has used the drug extensively. Jenelle denies this, and also went after her own sister, Tweeting, “now my psychopath sister that pulls out her hair and wears wigs lies and u believe? Gullible.” Even though Jenelle has admitted to being a chronic pot smoker, at one point this weekend she claimed, “I don’t do drugs” in response to attacks on Twitter. Her fiance, Courtland Rogers , was also accused of Tweeting on Jenelle Evans’ behalf in the hospital and then erasing everything, so … there’s that. Consider yourselves up to date, and confused.
