Alice Cooper, Neil Diamond Among Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Inductees

Tom Waits, Dr. John also made the list. By Gil Kaufman Alice Cooper Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images This year’s list of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees offers a musical cornucopia of styles. From the New Orleans boogie woogie voodoo soul of Dr. John to Tom Waits’ boho preacher-poet performance art, Neil Diamond’s overwrought pop histrionics, Darlene Love’s girl-group R&B and Alice Cooper’s goth/glam rock theater of the macabre, the Hall of Fame class of 2011 is set to take the stage for their honors on March 14 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. With the exception of Waits, all of the inductees are first-time nominees. While all are probably popping corks now, that means, of course, that a number of younger acts didn’t make the list. These include multiple nominees the Beastie Boys and LL Cool J, first-time nominee Bon Jovi and veteran acts J. Geils Band, Donna Summer and Chic. Cooper, 62, whose onstage theatrics include macabre set pieces such as guillotines and gallows, told Billboard that he felt it was about time his band got a nod. “I’ve always felt the same way about this whole thing,” said Cooper, whose classic hits includes “I’m Eighteen” and “School’s Out,” teenage rebellion anthems for the ages recorded by a band he started 45 years ago in high school. “I kind of sat back and said, ‘It will happen eventually.’ ” Artists are eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first single or album. Diamond told Rolling Stone that he was proud to join the institution. “I think it’s great. I’m happy that they recognized me and my work,” he said. “Any club that has Chuck Berry and Little Richard and the Everly Brothers is a club that I want to be a part of.” The 69-year-old crooner best known for hits such as “Cherry, Cherry,” “Sweet Caroline” and “Song Sung Blue” was not nearly as surprised by the honor as Love, who told the magazine that she was on her way to play a private Christmas party in Atlantic City when she found out. “I was just stunned for a minute. … I was laughing and crying at the same time. I’m still on cloud nine,” said Love, who is best known for her work with imprisoned “Wall of Sound” producer Phil Spector on such early 1960s hits as “He’s a Rebel” and “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” Related Artists Alice in Chains Neil Diamond

Wikileaks protests in Spain over Julian Assange arrest – BBC News –

Protests have taken place across Spain calling for the release of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who is facing extradition from the UK to Sweden for alleged sexual offences. Hundreds of people gathered outside the British embassy in Madrid calling for him to be freed. Wikileaks is publishing insights from hundreds of thousands of sensitive US diplomatic and military documents. The demonstrators believe Mr Assange's detention is politically motivated. The whistle-blowing website has angered and embarrassed governments around the world through its publication in recent weeks of classified US diplomatic cables. Mr Assange was detained in London on Tuesday after Sweden secured an international warrant for his arrest. Prosecutors in Sweden say they want to question him in connection with the sexual offence allegations. He was refused bail by a British court and has said he will fight extradition. There have also been calls from some in the US for his arrest and prosecution on charges related directly to Wikileaks' activity. Sensitive issue While supporters online have mounted cyber-protests against Mr Assange's detention, Saturday's protests were some of the first street demonstrations in support of Wikileaks. Wearing face masks associated with the “Anonymous” group of hackers – which launched cyber attacks after Mr Assange's arrest in the UK – the crowd in Madrid shouted for his freedom, outside the vast glass tower that houses the British embassy Many of the demonstrators were angry at some of the revelations in the cables, says the BBC's Sarah Rainsford in Madrid. These include the suggestion Spain came under pressure to stop a criminal investigation into the killing of Jose Couso, a Spanish cameraman who died when American soldiers fired a tank round into his hotel in Baghdad. The Free Wikileaks website, which organised the demonstrations, said protests were also planned for other Spanish cities, including Barcelona, Valencia and Seville. It called for the full restoration of Wikileaks' website, which was denied hosting services by Amazon after the first of the leaked cables were published two weeks ago. The protest organisers also demanded that Visa and MasterCard restore credit card services because, it said, no one had proven Mr Assange's guilt. Our correspondent says the issue of freedom of speech is sensitive for Spaniards, who only emerged from four decades of authoritarian rule in the 1970s. added by: toyotabedzrock

Darius McCrary Accused of Choking, Beating Karrine Steffans

Darius McCrary is back in the news, for all the wrong reasons. The former Family Matters star, who was accused by ex-wife Karrine Steffans of abuse in June 2008 , has been ordered to remain at least 100 yards away from his former flame. A judge agreed to this temporary restraining order in response to legal documents filed by Steffans this week. They cite two separate encounters with McCrary. In February, Steffans – who rose to fame by starring in a number of rap videos – claims McCrary “choked me from behind and beat me with a belt. The alleged attack took place in front of her 12-year-old son. Karrine also says McCrary choked her and shoved her into a car during a November incident that was witnessed by a crowd of people at the Sunset Marquis Hotel in Los Angeles. A court hearing is scheduled for next week. McCrary and Steffans divorced earlier this year.

By James Dinh Jennifer Lopez Photo: WireImage Thanks to the upcoming season of “American Idol,” an impending new album and recently announced endorsement deals, Jennifer Lopez ‘s career is seeing a resurgence. So it’s no surprise that the pop star, who spent recent years lying low to raise her twins alongside husband Marc Anthony, nabbed a spot on Barbara Walters’ “10 Most Fascinating People of 2010” list. Speaking with WWD , Lopez credited her inclusion on the celeb hot list to a combination of personal and professional endeavors including “the ‘American Idol’ [deal to appear as a judge] and also being a mom and entering back in the scene with the album.” The singer also admitted that she felt the pressure from the news correspondent during the interview, which airs Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. WWD joked with the singer/actress about whether Walters asked her questions like “What kind of tree are you?” She replied, “She didn’t ask me that, but she did ask me some kind of an abstract question like that, where I was like, ‘You’re Barbara Walter-ing me right now!’ ” Lopez, who joins Steven Tyler on the “Idol” judging panel this season, has also been chosen as the new face for L’Or

Robert Pattinson Is ‘Extraordinarily Attractive,’ Admits Reese Witherspoon

Actress marvels at the ‘fervor’ around her ‘Water for Elephants’ co-star. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Reese Witherspoon Photo: MTV News Reese Witherspoon became a household name in the late ’90s with a string of scene-stealing turns in films like “Pleasantville” and “Election.” Around the same time, Leonardo DiCaprio was transforming from teen heartthrob to mature Hollywood A-lister, thanks to the nearly $2 billion dollar success of “Titanic.” Over a decade later, Witherspoon has been thinking back to that pop culture period. It’s the only way she can make sense of the overwhelming popularity of her “Water for Elephants” co-star Robert Pattinson . “The only thing I can compare it to is when Leo was in ‘Titanic,’ ” she told MTV News while promoting her upcoming movie “How Do You Know.” “It was that kind of fervor about a person. The women lining up outside the set — it was unbelievable — till 5 o’clock in the morning waiting to just glimpse him.” The Tennessee set of “Water for Elephants” was basically no different than what happens when the “Twilight” vamp goes anywhere. As director Francis Lawrence told us in the fall, “[E]very day there would be, like, 50 people [staked out] … . [T]here would be people camped out in the hallways of our hotel. All day, all night long, it didn’t matter. People were there to try to catch a glimpse.” Witherspoon, of course, got an up-close-and-personal glimpse of RPattz, and she was happy to report back to us: “He is extraordinarily attractive. I’m not gonna lie,” she said. “Robert is such a great guy from a great family,” she explained. “That’s the thing that’s so funny. He’s not really this bad boy; he’s just a great guy and really worked hard on ‘Water for Elephants.’ He really worked long hours, long days. He looks totally different in the movie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “How Do You Know.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Police to Question Denise Richards Over Alleged Charlie Sheen Harrassment

Even in divorce, Denise Richards can’t get away from the mayhem Charlie Sheen leaves in his drunken wake. Because the actor’s ex-wife was actually present at dinner on the night Sheen allegedly went ballistic and eventually threatened the life of Capri Anderson – the porn star has said Richards left when she saw the evening turning into a night of “floozies” – police have contacted the actress. Richards was also sleeping in the Plaza Hotel room across from her ex when cops arrived on the scene. She reportedly entered at some point and could have spotted evidence to be used in an investigation. Two women, half a man. Sources tell TMZ Denise plans to “fully cooperate.” Meanwhile, a police spokesman spoke to E! News and gave some background on just what the NYPD is looking into, based on charges Anderson has brought against her one-time date. “She decided a month later the crime that was completed was harassment,” the spokesman said. “She said he was shouting at her, knocking things off in the hotel room, acting irrational. She voluntarily locked herself in the bathroom and was not held against her will. She was not a victim of assault. She was not imprisoned in the hotel room.” Why didn’t police initially investigate the events? “When we responded, she didn’t file a police report. She never said she felt in danger. Mr. Sheen voluntarily went to the hospital were he underwent a psychiatric evaluation.” Cops will also speak to Sheen about the incident at some point over the next couple days. Perhaps an English teacher could do the same. This crazy dude needs serious grammar help !
