Ancient Roman Site Unearthed in West London, England

Ancient Roman landscape unearthed near London By the CNN Wire Staff November 18, 2010 10:37 a.m. EST London, England (CNN) — Archaeologists have uncovered an ancient Roman landscape beneath a park in west London, with a Roman road, evidence of a settlement, and unusual burials among the finds. They say the discovery — at the site of a planned luxury hotel near the edge of the River Thames — gives valuable and rare insight into the daily life of what was then an agricultural village. Dating back nearly 2,000 years, the village would have supplied the ancient Roman city of Londinium and also given shelter to passing travelers. “It helps us build a picture of the Roman landscape and shows how the busy metropolis of Londinium connected with the rest of Roman Britain,” said Jo Lyon, a senior archaeologist at the Museum of London Archaeology, which carried out the excavations. The site is in Syon Park, owned by the Duke of Northumberland and located across the river from Kew Gardens. Waldorf Astoria is building a luxury hotel on the grounds that is set to open early next year. The Museum of London made the discovery while doing excavations in August 2008 ahead of the hotel's construction. Everything was found under just half a meter (1.5 feet) of soil, and the finds were kept secret until the fieldwork was finished. Some of the finds will be displayed at the hotel, Waldorf Astoria said. The site revealed a section of one of Roman Britain's most important roads, linking Londinium with the Roman town of Silchester, which lies farther west. “That's one of the key national roads, (a) very, very busy road, and we don't really find fragments of the actual roads themselves very often in London,” Lyon said. The dig also revealed evidence of a rural settlement and an ancient tributary of the Thames. Thousands of Roman artifacts were recovered from the site, including two shale armlets and fragments of a lava quern stone, used for grinding grains. Archaeologists also found a fragment of an “exceptional” Late Bronze Age (1000-700 BC) gold bracelet that probably predated the site, as well as hundreds of coins. “All of the coins came from the Roman road,” she said. “That road was in use for 400 years across the Roman period, and people have just dropped coins over those hundreds of years.” One of them is a coin made of copper alloy that features a V, which Lyon said could refer to Vespasian, who was Roman emperor between 69 and 79 AD. There were also the skeletons of those who may have been former occupants of the settlement. They were found unusually buried in ditches, lying on their sides without any grave goods, which the museum said was “particularly curious” and in need of more research. Lyon said she initially thought they were Iron Age burials because the style was so “casual.” It could be that the method was a local one adopted by the Romans who lived there, she said. The dig also showed that the British landscape changed considerably under Roman influence, with the establishment of towns connected by roads, the museum said. Londinium, the ancient name of London, was founded in 48 AD on an uninhabited site, and its strategic position on the Thames helped it rapidly become the most important and largest commercial town in the province. The site on Syon Park would have been an attractive place for a settlement because it lay between the road and the Thames, the museum said. The land was easy to cultivate and the presence of the road would have given the community another source of income from travelers wanting refreshment and lodging. added by: EthicalVegan

Victoria Beckham Throws Me A Bone

In the last little while all the pictures I’ve gotten of Victoria Beckham have involved her walking out the door of her hotel. So boring, especially considering that her awesome implants, may they rest in peace, have been dead and gone for over a year now. The good news is that this time she decided she’d throw me a bone and wear a nice little pair of stylish denim short shorts. I’m not sure if it threw me a bone, but I’d say it’s at least a chub. Enjoy.

Drake Says Rat Pack Inspired VMA Performance

‘I wanted to get up there and look fly,’ he tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — You know you’ve made it when the chorus from your song is quoted on “SportsCenter.” You know you’ve made it tenfold when you have a highly anticipated slot at the MTV Video Music Awards . Drake has both, with “you fancy, huh?” permeating pop culture, and on Sunday, you’ll see him team up on the big stage with Swizz Beatz and a very special guest, Mary J. Blige, for his debut VMA performance. “All I remember is that VMAs in Vegas, in the hotel,” Drake said Friday afternoon (September 10) in his dressing room at the Nokia Theatre. He had just finished rehearsing for a couple of hours. “I remember being at home … seeing Tyga perform with Wayne, and I was like, ‘Man, I gotta get my ball rolling. I gotta be there one day.’ It’s surreal, being on that stage.” And yes, Drizzy will be surrounded by several beautiful ladies and one lovely Queen. “Fancy” was originally slated to be a Mary record , before eventually making its way to Thank Me Later. Drake and the song’s producer, Swizz Beatz, decided to keep her vocals on the hook of the song. “Her vocals are what make it so sweet,” Drake beamed of having MJB perform with him. “What’s more classy, more fancy than Mary J. Blige? I’m not sure. She is the epitome of class, in my opinion. It’s more of a real theater production than it is a performance. It’s really a lot of acting.” If rehearsals are any indication, Drake’s performance will be reminiscent of the up-to-date Sinatra cool in his VMA promo spot . “I watched the Rat Pack live at the Copa Room,” Drake recalled. “It was just so relaxed. They were smoking cigarettes and drinking Jack. It was women everywhere. It wasn’t, ‘Let’s just rap and be epic and be huge.’ They were like, ‘I really run this. Me and Sammy and Dean.’ I wanted to get up there and look fly.” Are you looking forward to Drake’s VMA performance? Let us know in the comments! YG Says Ladies Can ‘Toot It And Boot It’ Too

L.A. rapper looks to capitalize on debut single’s success, in Mixtape Daily. By Steven Roberts YG Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: YG If you’ve set foot in L.A. over the last few months, you’ve definitely heard YG’s “Toot It and Boot It.” The laid-back, infectious tune is a staple of any SoCal party, and it’s starting to gain traction throughout the rest of the country. So the next question on everyone’s minds has to be: What does the phrase “toot it and boot it” mean? “The song ‘Toot It and Boot It’ means have fun for one night,” YG explained. “Go to Vegas, you meet a girl in the club, tell her what’s up, take her back to the hotel, and then you do you-know-what, then after you do that, you kick them out. You got to go. You toot it and boot it. You got to give them the boot, and then it’s on with your life.” The song is a new take on the old notion of a one-night stand. YG said the track came together after producer and vocalist Ty$ and a few of his homies invited him to the studio to jump on a track they were working on. And despite the song’s seemingly misogynistic overtones, YG insisted “tooting and booting” is an equal-opportunity sport. “The girls like that song, because they do a lot of tootin’ it and bootin’ it too, so they feel where I’m coming from,” he said. The rapper hails from L.A. and is signed to Def Jam, a label not traditionally known for signing too many West Coast acts. YG had amassed an impressive following in L.A., thanks to the promotional team he co-created “Pu$haz Ink.” He caught Def Jam’s attention by pushing his high-energy party music at shows and clubs. YG’s debut album, Fresh on Campus, will definitely have his traditional party vibe. His previous producers handled a majority of the album, and his next single, the suggestive “Patty Cake,” is in line with what fans expect from him. “I wanted to come out with ‘Patty Cake,’ because ‘Toot It and Boot It’ is a laid-back song,” he said. “I feel all my fans know me as the party dude, like, ‘He turnt-up,’ so I feel like I’ve got to come out with something next that’s turnt-up.” YG’s third single, “Hell Yeah,” will have a bit more star power with a potential feature from “Deuces” duo Chris Brown and Tyga. He knew Brown’s best friend, Miho, from L.A., and he connected the two artists. Brown was more than happy to jump on the song when YG sent it to him. He was debating adding Tyga, joking that he selfishly may want to be the only one rapping. Besides his debut release, which is slated for early 2011, YG recently filmed the movie “We the Party,” directed by Mario Van Peebles, and he said he’s been asked about starring in the Tupac Shakur biopic . YG said he enjoyed his first acting experience and said he might stick with it. “I really liked it, you feel me?” YG said. “I hear that’s where the money at, so I’m finnin’ to go get the money.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
