A$AP Rocky Having A ‘Good Time’ On Debut Mixtape

‘I just want people to have fun again,’ Harlem’s newly crowned prince tells Mixtape Daily of Live.Love.A$AP. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Steven Roberts A$AP Rocky Photo: Polo Grounds Main Pick Headliner : A$AP Rocky Representing : Harlem, New York Mixtape : Live.Love.A$AP Real Spit : A$AP Rocky is having the time of his life, and he wants you to join him. “I just want people to have fun again; people don’t know how to have fun,” the Harlem, New York, rapper recently told Mixtape Daily. “It’s all about mean-mugging and ballin’ and bottle poppin,’ and sh–. I feel like we can just have brew, cigarettes and some bad bitches and have a good time,” he theorized about the current hip-hop landscape. “We don’t really need all that other fancy sh– because that doesn’t happen every day in real life.” And with that notion, Rocky’s first mixtape, Live.Love.A$AP, was birthed. Noted for his Southern approach to hip-hop, the NYC-bred Rocky sets the record straight on the tape’s opener, “Palace.” On the operatic slow-roller, Rocky pays homage to rap from other regions while looking to carve his own identity. “Don’t remember me as a wannabe, New Orleans n—a/ Slash lean sipper, Tennessee n—a/ Nah, influenced by Houston, hear it in my music/ A trill n—a to the truest, show you how to do this.” His breakout single, “Peso,” appears on his debut tape, but Rock’s fan-favorite “Purple Swag” has been replaced with a remix that features producer/rapper Spaceghost Purrp and A$AP Nast adding verses. The Clams Casino-produced “Wassup,” melodic and menacing at once, is a sleepy track with a rolling bass, and it finds the newly crowned N.Y. prince putting it down for his hometown. “I be that pretty mother—-er, Harlem’s what I’m reppin’,” he spits, recycling the quotable line from “Peso.” The A$AP circle is tight-knit, so features from outsiders are kept to a minimum, though Schoolboy Q’s contribution on “Brand New Guy” is clearly welcome. The Black Hippy MC steals the show, spitting murder and watching Netflix on the couch with his rival’s girlfriend. It’s quite the comedy. A$AP Rocky’s out-of-town influence is present throughout: “Trilla” is a bluesy, Deep South affair with a hint of Midwestern Bone Thugs-style vocals, while “Get Lit” is a perfectly chopped and screwed Texas throwback. It may not be New York, but it most certainly is fun. Joints to Check For

Whitney Houston, There was a Problem: Singer Nearly Gets Booted from Flight

Hmmm… Whitney Houston might wanna claim she was drunk in this case. According to multiple sources, the troubled singer almost got kicked off a Delta flight in Atlanta yesterday because she wouldn’t buckle her seatbelt. Really. She just refused to do so. After being warned that she’d be removed unless she followed orders, a crew member actually had to come over and fasten Whitney’s safety restraint for her, as an insider tells TMZ Houston “overreacted a little bit after missing an earlier flight but she’s still 100% sober and was on the way to Detroit for her first day of shooting a new movie.” The artist spent 30 days in rehab earlier this summer. Future Explains Difficulty Shooting ‘Tony Montana’ Video

Rapper films ‘Scarface’-inspired video in the Dominican Republic: ‘It took five hours in customs, getting searched 10 times.’ By Steven Roberts Future Photo: MTV News Rappers love “Scarface.” While “Goodfellas” and “A Bronx Tale” might be better movies, rappers just can’t get enough of Tony Montana. The 1983 Oliver Stone film starring Al Pacino is a favorite because of the parallels MCs have drawn between their lives and Montana’s. After all the movie posters in those old episodes of “Cribs” and the many mentions of “Scarface” and character Alejandro Sosa in rhymes, Atlanta’s Future has a song simply called “Tony Montana.” The track, which finds Future rapping as Montana, has started to gain legs outside of his stronghold of Atlanta — thanks in large part to a feature from Drake — and, of course, the next step is a video. When MTV News caught up with Future on Monday afternoon, he revealed he spent the past weekend shooting the clip in the beautiful Dominican Republic with director Jessy Terrero. Yes, Montana was from Cuba, but Future learned it isn’t easy shooting in foreign countries, let alone one with which the U.S. has longstanding political problems. “It was hard [enough] getting over to the Dominican Republic and getting all the permits,” Future said. “I wanted to go to Cuba, but I couldn’t get over there because of the passports and going through customs. It took five hours in customs, getting searched 10 times, going to the Dominican Republic. Getting back, they damn near didn’t want me to come back to America.” Future said it was a difficult process making the video, but it will be worth it once fans see his and Terrero’s vision. Drake is expected to be featured in the clip, although his part wasn’t filmed in the D.R. Unlike in the film, Future said the video finds him leaving the States. “I get a call from overseas saying there’s been some robberies going on, and they want me to come over there and handle it,” he explained. “It’s like a caper, and I’m just getting down to it, trying to find out who’s in charge and who’s pulling the robberies. It’s a movie on wax.” Related Artists Future

Bun B Represents For Hip-Hop At Occupy Houston

‘I think it’s important that Bernard Freeman be here as a citizen of the world,’ the Trill O.G. tells MTV News of lending support. By Maurice Bobb Bun B Photo: MTV News HOUSTON — Bun B assumed his role as the unofficial Mayor of Houston when he joined Occupy Houston at City Hall on Tuesday. The protest is an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street movement that began about a month ago in New York. And as rap fans know, hip-hop has a long tradition of serving as an outlet for activism. So, like Talib Kweli and Kanye West did in NYC’s Zuccotti Park , the legendary Professor of Trill turned up in his home city to show support for the demonstrators. MTV News caught up with Bun B at the protest and he opened up about why he decided to come through. “I think it’s important that Bernard Freeman be here as a citizen of the world,” he told us, mentioning his birth name. “And I think it’s important that Bun B be here as a person of influence who has a voice that can bring attention to a cause. It’s very important that someone from the hip-hop community is out here supporting Occupy Houston , simply because of the fact of how hip-hop is represented in the world,” he added. The Trill O.G. M.C. said it was also important to show that rappers are about more than their money. “I think a lot of people look at us as being these flashy, fly types of people who are just concerned with spending money, but that’s not all of us,” he said. “That’s not what hip-hop is here to do. We have individuals that represent that, and I represented that from time to time, but that doesn’t make me who I am. I understand how real this world is and how real things can get and that’s what Occupy Houston is about. It’s not about what we do on the clock — it’s about being off the clock and supporting people who can’t even get on the clock right now.” While Houston is a long way from Wall Street, the city knows corporate corruption all too well. The Enron debacle , for example, is still a sore spot with many Houstonians. “The effects of the Enron collapse in Houston are still felt today,” Bun said. “Not everyone who had strong jobs in that sector were able to find replacements for those jobs. A lot of people had to take positions in companies to do things that they didn’t necessarily train for in order to support their families and that’s kinda what we’re standing for at Occupy Houston. “The misconception about Occupy Houston is that it’s a bunch of jobless people who don’t wanna work and just want the rich to give them their money. Well, that’s not true. The majority of these people are educated — not just high school, but they’re college graduates, they have degrees, they’ve done what it takes to get into the workforce. Unfortunately, corporate America is not affording enough opportunities for people to go out get jobs and support their families. Instead of hiring more people, they’re firing more people just to keep the numbers up. A company that makes $3 billion a year, it’s still gonna function if they only make $2.8 billion a year in order to keep a couple people employed. Bun explained that protesters’ frustration was due in large part to feeling underrepresented at the government level, where decisions affecting their lives are being made. “So that’s what we’re here fighting against, you know, corporate irresponsibility,” he continued. “The fact that we in Houston and America — even though we’re the people that vote, we’re the people that pay our taxes — we don’t have the voice that we should have in our local state and federal governments, and that’s another stance that we’re taking.” On Tuesday, demonstrators looked like most of those at Occupy rallies across the nation, brandishing homemade placards and signs with varying messages such as, “I am the 99 percent” and “Heal America, Tax Wall Street.” Bun rolled up his sleeves and pitched in with assigning posters and announcing general assembly guidelines , which included the proper way to agree (both hands held aloft), block proposals (both arms crossed like an X) and to ask a question (one fist in the air). Police were on hand, but no arrests were made on Tuesday. “Anybody that wants to understand clearly what the Occupy movement here in Houston, across the country, as well as the world, a little better can go to any of the Occupy sites and find all the real information, not the misinformation,” Bun said. Explain Yourself: 5 Confusing Song Lyrics

Read the original here:

Everybody can agree that music is a universal language. Many American musicians make note of the fact foreign audiences don’t understand what they’re saying when they are speaking, but the audience sings every word to their songs. Well, what happens when an audience speaks a musician’s native tongue fluently and they still don’t understand what the musician is talking about? I was at a party and the DJ had the beats knocking, until he threw Kriss Kross on . (Forgive him.) On “Jump,” the boys from the A rap, “‘Cause I’m the miggity, miggity, miggity, miggity Mac Daddy.” Can someone explain what a “miggity mac” is because I didn’t understand it then and still don’t. We will discuss a few of the most confusing lyrics in songs. If you think you can explain some of our selections, sound off in the comments. Labelle – “Lady Marmalade” This signature hit from the ladies of Labelle has it all–a racy subject matter, a funky groove, and a little bit of French thrown in there.  The few lines in French translate to “Will you sleep with me tonight?” However, what in the world is a “gitchy gitchy ya ya?” I’ve heard of singers scatting, but that was never in the scat sounds dictionary. “Gitchy gitchy ya ya” sounds like a pause worthy slang term for a sexually transmitted disease. “ Yo, Son, you was messing with that girl around the block? You better get checked or something. I heard she got that gitchy gitchy ya ya, if you know what I mean!” To which a person would respond, “Pause. Damn, I’m going straight to the clinic!” Lady Marmalade Kanye West – “Roses” In 2005, Kanye West put out his sophomore album, Late Registration . The set was more introspective than his debut. His introspection was on full display on the track dedicated to his grandmother’s ordeal with being hospitalized. “Roses” documented how he had to deal with his popularity when he just wanted to be a human and look after his grandmother. While the song is remarkable, one line baffles even the most intellectual people I know. “So many aunties, we could have an auntie team.” Kanye , we know you like to act like you’re more forward thinking than the rest of us commoners. So could you explain what an auntie team is? To clarify, are we talking about a basketball team full of aunties? What kind of team are we talking here? Commoners, like myself, know you don’t write lyrics down. With lines like that, you might want to start putting the pen to paper again. Roses Whitney Houston – “Million Dollar Bill” When Whitney Houston was recording her comeback disc, I Look To You , she called upon some of today’s hottest songwriters to provide the material for her to reclaim her throne atop the music charts. The second single from the effort was the Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz confection, “Million Dollar Bill.” The disco-lite uptempo number had us in a groove until she sang, “I can see the way he’s making me feel this way about his love.” Honestly, I can’t blame Whitney. She was just looking for another hit song to flesh out her album. The real blame is on Alicia Keys . She’s a great artist and all, but for a woman who graduated high school at 16 and was accepted to Columbia University , she is all over the place with her writing. A few of her songs don’t make good use of a little thing we like to call subject-verb agreement . This line in “Million Dollar Bill” feels Mrs. Swizz Beatz threw some words at a wall and whichever stuck, she put in a song. No dice. Million Dollar Bill Lionel Richie – “All Night Long” In the 80s, light skinned fellas were all the rage. The leader of that light skinned male crusade was the crooner, Lionel Richie . One of his biggest hits is the party anthem, “All Night Long.” The word “party” is said in many different languages. The questionable thing about the song is about the chant at the end. If anyone has an explanation for “tom bol li de se de moi ya, hey jambo jumbo,” please holla at a player.  Are those actual words in another language? I’m not too sure. My theory is baby Nicole Richie was learning to talk and she said this, instead of a real sentence and Poppa Richie just went with it. I could be wrong, but my theory is probably cooler than the actual story. At least, I’d like to think so. All Night Long Michael Jackson – “Wanna Be Startin Somethin” Michael Jackson released the seminal project, Thriller , in 1982. Though every song on there is a classic, one of the biggest fan favorites is “Wanna Be Startin Somethin.” When I was a kid, I was obsessed with this song. I played it so much my mom bought me a Walkman so she didn’t wind up breaking my tape. One thing about that song annoys me to this day. What the hell does “ma ma se, ma ma sa, ma ma coo sa” mean?! My mom told me it was Swahili and I believed her. Come to find out, she  wasn’t far off. The King of Pop claimed the phrase was Swahili, in order to keep all royalties for himself. Apparently, the words come from a song by a Cameroonian artist, Dibango . Dibango’s words were, “ma ma ko, ma ma sa, ma ma ko sa.” Dibango sued Jackson in the 80s and sued him again in 2007 when Rihanna sampled the chant for her dance hit, “Don’t Stop The Music.” Rihanna got permission from Michael Jackson , but neglected to get permission from Dibango . They settled out of court for the second time before Rihanna’s album dropped. By the way, there is no clear translation of the chant, but it does have something to do with dancing.
