Howard Stern’s sidekick Artie Lange hospitalized after suicide attempt

Stand-up comic, published author and co-star of The Howard Stern radio show Artie Lange was quietly rushed to the hospital Sunday night . At that time, there was no further explanation and Stern remained tight-lipped about it on his show. But now, Page Six is reporting that the troubled comedian, who has a long history of drug and alcohol abuse, gambling addiction and depression, tried to commit suicide by cutting himself nine times. Troubled comic Artie Lange landed in the hospital after stabbing himself nine times in an apparent suicide attempt, sources told The Post. Lange’s frantic mom called 911 Saturday morning after she entered his Hoboken apartment and found the bloodied funnyman, a law-enforcement source said. Lange sustained six “hesitation wounds” and three deep plunges. A source close to Lange’s management team confirmed that the Howard Stern sidekick stabbed himself, adding that his mother had come to visit him that day to drop off food. Surgeons managed to save Lange despite heavy bleeding. “We all have our demons,” Stern said on-air this week, referring to Lange’s past battles with addiction. “Artie has given this show tremendous moments of great comedy. He’s a tremendous contributor. He is a good man. Don’t forget how great he is.” [From Page Six] Lange is a textbook example of a “Crying on the inside” comedian. Love him or hate him, this is pretty darn sad. Stabbing yourself is a desperate act, indicative of someone at the end of their rope. Anyone who listens to the show knows that Artie has been in a bad way for quite some time, but hasn’t been ready to do the work needed to stay off drugs, treat his depression and take better care of himself. At least, not for more than a couple of weeks at a time. I hope he takes some time off and focuses on his mental and physical health. A publicist for Artie Lange says the comedian and radio personality has been hospitalized. In an e-mail sent Monday to The Associated Press, publicist Hilary Hansen declined to elaborate, saying, “Artie has chosen to keep all information on this matter between him and his doctor.” The 42-year-old Lange, best known as Howard Stern’s radio sidekick, has been absent from Stern’s Sirius radio show for a month. On Monday’s show, Stern said Lange isn’t leaving the program and called him “a tremendous contributor.” Lange, who lives in Hoboken, N.J., has battled drug addiction. In September, a New Jersey judge revoked his driving privileges for seven months after he admitted he was under the influence of prescribed sleeping pills in a minor traffic accident.

Howard Stern: I believed Artie Lange was clean and sober

6 comments Subscribe Subscribe Howard Stern made revealing statements Wednesday morning about his relationship with co-host Artie Lange and why he trusted the heroin-addicted comedian’s claims that he was clean and sober in the months before his violent suicide attempt. The Artie Lange discussion launched from one of Robin Quivers’ news stories about the domestic violence charges levied against ultimate fighting champ Tito Ortiz by porn star and frequent Howard Stern Show guest Jenna Jameson. Ortiz is now stating that the altercation with Jameson erupted over the porn queen’s addiction to Oxycontin pills. Tito Ortiz arrested for assault on porn star Jenna Jameson (video) “Did it seem to you that she was on any drugs?” Quivers asked Stern regarding Jameson’s most recent in-studio Howard Stern Show appearance. “How would I know Robin?” sighed Stern. “No. She seemed coherent. Then again you’re talking to a guy who said Artie was clean and sober. I believed him. Don’t go by me. I’m not good at picking out anyone who’s high. That has been proven. I am just not keyed into that.” Watch the Artie Lange ‘Hurt’ video below Quivers then made a surprising critique of Stern’s handling of the Artie Lange issue. “Well maybe it’s because you’re just not interested in anybody but yourself?” she prosed. “That would be one of the reasons,” said Stern. “The other reason would be I’m not a ‘drug person’ and I’m not aware of that.” Quivers wasn’t letting Stern off the hook that easily. “No,” she stated. “But I mean you could notice if somebody’s SLEEPING.” Video: Bob Levy blames Howard Stern for Artie Lange’s suicide attempt During the 2009 Howard Stern Show season, co-host Artie Lange fell asleep on-air multiple times. At one point, Lange’s lack of consciousness became a featured bit on the show. The comedian was laid out on the in-studio couch with a microphone propped up next to him and the show proceeded live with Lange snoring along heartily as accompaniment. “That-that…I thought he was tired,” said Stern earnestly. “I honestly did. I said: ‘The guy’s worn out. He doesn’t know how to put himself to bed at night. He can’t-he’s busy with the game. He’s excited.” Chris Kanyon talked about suicide with Howard Stern and Artie Lange (photo slideshow) Quivers kept pressing: “You could notice that somebody’s, you know, losing the hair on his arms,…and,…eating out of control.” “I did notice that. I was the one who noticed that,” said Howard defensively. “I saw all that. But I still-I believed him. I believe people. I believe in man’s honesty. I didn’t think he would lie to me.” “All right,” replied Quivers with what sounded like a heaping spoonful of judgment, and then moved on to discuss the plight of Bret Michaels   who is recovering from a brain hemorrhage in an Arizona ICU. But there is more to the story… DR. BLOGSTEIN : You had the responsibility of replacing Howard Stern when he went to Sirius Satellite Radio. ROB BARNETT : Piece of cake, right? STEVE LANGFORD : This we have to hear. The former CBS executive in charge when Howard left that sad cemetery of stations in late 2005… ROB BARNETT : The real truth of it has never completely come out. STEVE LANGFORD : So many stories, so little time for Rob Barnett, who was at the wheel when CBS Radio went into a ditch after Howard moved to Sirius XM… ROB BARNETT : Howard is as unique a person in the world that we all live in and he’s completely irreplaceable. STEVE LANGFORD : Barnett revealing a couple of stories about how CBS Radio tried to move on without Howard, on Dr. Blogstein’s Radio Happy Hour … ROB BARNETT : We went to Jon Stewart first—because we worked with him a little bit back in the MTV days—and offered him not hosting a radio show, but the idea of him doing one of the millions of jobs he does, which is produce. And we pitched him kind of a Lorne Michaels concept, where you could really start over from scratch and cast something that would be different than a typical four-hour radio show. STEVE LANGFORD : When that didn’t happen, Plan B involved a couple of other characters from Comedy Central… ROB BARNETT : We had some amazing meetings with Matt [ Stone ] and Trey [ Parker ] from South Park . That never came out in the press, but it was incredibly fun. STEVE LANGFORD : But as everyone knows, the fun stayed at Comedy Central and CBS listeners—those who couldn’t get up to change the station—ended up with David Lee Roth and company. DR. BLOGSTEIN : Did that drive you off of radio? Because that’s a no-win situation. STEVE LANGFORD : More than four years later, the search goes on.
