Sad day for fans of good literature. Gabriel García Márquez Dies At Age 87 Such a talented author…what a loss. According to NY Times: Gabriel García Márquez, the Colombian novelist whose “One Hundred Years of Solitude” established him as a giant of 20th-century literature, died on Thursday at his home in Mexico City. He was 87. His death was confirmed by Cristóbal Pera, his former editor at Random House. Mr. García Márquez, who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982, wrote fiction rooted in a mythical Latin American landscape of his own creation, but his appeal was universal. His books were translated into dozens of languages. He was among a select roster of canonical writers — Dickens, Tolstoy and Hemingway among them — who were embraced both by critics and by a mass audience. “Each new work of his is received by expectant critics and readers as an event of world importance,” the Swedish Academy of Letters said in awarding him the Nobel. Mr. García Márquez was considered the supreme exponent, if not the creator, of the literary genre known as magic realism, in which the miraculous and the real converge. In his novels and stories, storms rage for years, flowers drift from the skies, tyrants survive for centuries, priests levitate and corpses fail to decompose. And, more plausibly, lovers rekindle their passion after a half century apart. Besides his wife, Mercedes, his survivors include two sons, Rodrigo and Gonzalo. He will definitely be missed. Facebook
Que rico… Sofia Vergara Drops $10.6 Million On New Beverly Hills Mansion Via Realtor Sofia Vergara can now have her entire modern family living under the same roof if she wants to. Vergara, best known for her role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the ABC sitcom “Modern Family,” recently splurged on an 11,400-square-foot mansion-estate in Beverly Hills. The Real Estalker reports that she paid $10.6 million for a gated villa-style compound in early February. The property, located a few minutes south of the Franklin Canyon Reservoir, had listed for as much as $12.5 million when it came to market in September 2013. Though it was built in 2006, Vergara’s new spread exudes a certain old-world charm thanks to a range of materials imported from Argentina, artisan work and other intimate finishes. It has seven bedrooms, including an upstairs master suite with his and hers appointments, and a total of 11 baths. Of its many modern conveniences, standouts include a wood-paneled study, a large chef’s kitchen with a center island, and a finished lower level designed for entertaining with a 3,000-bottle wine cellar and tasting room, a movie theater, a card room, and a gym with a sauna. Outside, the grounds have mature trees that provide privacy for a large pool and spa. Two maid’s quarters and a laundry room can also be found on the more-than-half-acre grounds. According to the Estalker, prior to her big purchase Vergara had been living in a modest-by-Hollywood-standards three-bedroom condominium unit in Century City that she purchased for $1.1 million in 2007.
