When The Voice Season 11 premieres on September 19, Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine will be in competition with each other. They'll be jostling and arguing over which prospective contestants will be a part of their team. But the singers put all (jovial) animosity aside on Sunday night, teaming up for a special 30-minute preview of The Voice. The preview aired after NBC's coverage of the Summer Olympics, which ended up being extremely appropriate. Because Miley, Blake, Adam and Alicia put on a Gold Medal-worthy performance to conclude the special. It features all four artists on stage, belting out a version of the Aerosmith classic, “Dream On.” At one point, Levine even made Steven Tyler proud with his very impression rendition of Tyler's famous high-pitched vocals. It was pretty astounding, actually. We're not sure if anyone else in the music business could have pulled it off. Earlier in the episode, we were treated to a sneak peek at two of this season’s Blind Auditions, with the talent level threatening to reach its highest point to date. We couldn't believe a couple of the aspiring singers were just 17 years old. But that's all for a few weeks from now. You'll get to know the contestants a lot better on September 19 when The Voice returns. For now, we strongly recommend that readers give these coaches a few minutes of their time in order to check out their “Dream On” rendition. It's fantastic.
A former student who impregnated a high school teacher was awarded $6 million in a settlement, officials in Redlands, Calif., confirmed. Vince Finaldi, an attorney for the former student, said the egregious conduct of the Redlands Unified School District warranted the payment. “The size of this settlement represents the gravity of the damage done to this young victim and his family,” he said in a statement. “It also highlights the extreme malfeasance and neglect by school officials who turned a blind eye to the criminal conduct of a teacher.” Administrators, he reiterated, “failed to protect a student.” Laura Whitehurst , 29, was arrested in July 2013 and charged with 41 felony counts of unlawful sex acts. Yes. Forty-one felony charges. That could have meant up to 29 years in prison. Ultimately, she pleaded guilty to four counts of unlawful sexual intercourse and two counts of oral copulation with a person under 18. Her sexual dalliances involved three boys at Citrus Valley and Redlands high schools during her tenure as a teacher in both locations. As part of a plea bargain in which she admitted having the student’s baby , she was sentenced to a year in jail and released after six months. On probation, she is a registered sex offender. Laura Whitehurst shares custody of the love child with the former high school student, who is now 21, according to the victim’s attorneys. In the lawsuit, attorneys for the student alleged that school officials knew of his romance with Whitehurst and failed to warn his family. Teacher Pleads Guilty To Having Sex With Students The lawsuit also claimed that a colleague of Whitehurst’s was aware of the relationship and that school officials questioned her about it. Despite the huge payment, district officials said they were admitting no wrongdoing by settling the lawsuit, blaming Whitehurst alone. Spokesman Tom DeLapp said the district is “not pleased with this” but settled “this tragic case once and for all so we can move forward.” “We felt there could be serious damage to the reputation of a very fine school district” if the legal case were to be drawn out, he added. Throwing a bit of shade, he said they ended this before “the plaintiff’s lawyers were allowed to drag the [school] through the mud all over again.” “In the long run, $6 million is high, but it could have been much higher if this had been left to an empathetic jury in another city.” DeLapp feared a jury “looking past the facts” to find a “financial scapegoat for the unprofessional, criminal actions of one individual.” He cited the explosion of media attention, noting “there was a picture of her in the birthing suite circulated to people at the school with the boy.” View Slideshow: 24 Teachers 2 Hot 4 Students The former student who fathered Laura Whitehurst’s baby said the relationship started in 2012 when he was 16 and lasted for a year. He told authorities Whitehurst began driving him home from school functions and spending long hours with him away from the school. On a trip to Disneyland, she grabbed his hand and told him she wanted to kiss him, and shortly after the trip, things escalated. Hard. She and the boy began having repeated sexual intercourse at her apartment, he said, and Whitehurst gave birth to their child in June 2013. The boy was in attendance for the birth. He said later that Whitehurst gave him alcohol and told him it was a “miracle pregnancy” as she did not believe she could get pregnant. The beef between Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel seems to be heating up. Though there’s been no explanation of the beef between the two so far, Johnson fired another shot via his Instagram page. Lou Pearlman Dies In Prison While Serving 25-Year Sentence Lou Pearlman, the innovative yet extremely crooked manager that masterminded mega-acts like Backstreet Boys, N*SYNC , passed away while serving a 25-year prison sentence in connection with running a $300 million ponzi scheme yesterday. He was 62. Via Orlando Sentinel : Boy band promoter Lou Pearlman, known for launching groups such as the Backstreet Boys and ‘NSync, died in prison Friday while serving a 25-year sentence for one of the largest Ponzi schemes in Florida history, a federal inmate database shows. Pearlman cashed in on the boy-band craze, building an empire of acts around the globe in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It collapsed in 2006 after he was exposed for running a massive $300 million Ponzi scheme. He declared bankruptcy in 2007 and was convicted of fraud in 2008. The cause of death for the 62-year-old was not disclosed Saturday. Calls to the Federal Bureau of Prisons were not returned. The Orlando entrepreneur is credited with starting the ’90s boy-band craze and managed huge acts including the Backstreet Boys, ‘N Sync, O-Town and the Chippendales before the scheme was uncovered. After the scheme was uncovered, hundreds of lawsuits were filed in the case, including one by the Backstreet Boys, and some victims were taken for their life savings. Pearlman was caught by FBI agents in Bali, Indonesia while running from creditors and regulators. He was living under the false name, A. Incognito Johnson. Dwayne Johnson just wrapped filming on Fast 8. Soon afterward, he took to Instagram and showed cast and crew members from the movie with praise and gratitude. Well, MOST cast and crew members, that is. “Finished strong and on to the next. That’s an officially wrap on #FastAndFurious8. Thank you to our director @fgarygray for the vision and execution,” Johnson wrote as a caption to the image above. Fair enough, right? It’s also a good thing and a nice thing to thank one’s director. But then Johnson continued as follows: “Thank you to all my fellow co-stars for the daily effort and grind. Scott Eastwood you handsome sumbitch! Proud of our entire FAST FAMILY.” That’s a very kind sentiment, except there’s clearly someone in the Fast Family who Johnson failed to mention: Vin Diesel. A couple weeks ago, Johnson went on a social media tirade against an unnamed male co-star who he seemed “unprofessional” and called, quite simply, a “candy ass.” He wrote: “Some conduct themselves as stand up men and true professionals, while others don’t. The ones that don’t are too chicken sh*t to do anything about it anyway. Candy asses. “When you watch this movie next April and it seems like I’m not acting in some of these scenes and my blood is legit boiling – you’re right.” It didn’t take long for sources to confirm that his beef was with Diesel . Insiders told TMZ that Diesel let the power of being a producer go to his head. He allegedly acted like a giant dick on set, berating other actors, showing up late and generally acting like a jerk. Should Johnson receive some flak for not calling Diesel out by name in his Instagram rant ? Perhaps. But most crew members say Johnson was a true, hard-working, generous professional on set. They say Diesel was the opposite. How has Diesel responded to this feud? By briefly acknowledging its existence and by saying he’ll soon tell everyone absolutely everything . He’s yet to actually do this. Tyrese, meanwhile, has come out and said nice things about both Johnson and Diesel, trying hard not to take sides. No other co-star has commented on the bad blood. It’s only been about seven months since we first learned that Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are dating , but the couple appears to be moving very quickly.
