Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch Are ‘Savages’ In Oliver Stone’s Latest

‘She is beautiful and she is sexy. She is hot,’ legendary filmmaker says of Lively’s performance in his summer flick, out July 6. By Josh Horowitz Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson in “Savages” Photo: Universal Pictures When Oliver Stone releases a film, you’d better sit up and take notice. Whether he’s tackling the Vietnam War (as he did in a trilogy of films: “Platoon,” “Born on the Fourth of July” and “Heaven & Earth”), presidential scandals (another trilogy: “JFK,” “Nixon” and “W.”) or pulpy genre violence (“Natural Born Killers,” “U-Turn”), you can be sure he’ll give an audience member something to chew on. So when Stone signs on to direct some of the hottest young actors in Hollywood (Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson) in a tale of sex, drugs and violence, yeah, we’re interested. MTV News caught up with Stone to talk about his first legitimate summer release, “Savages” (set for a July 6 release), as well his distaste for most summer popcorn films, and his upcoming gargantuan take on nothing less than the history of the United States. MTV : The release date of “Savages” was shifted quite a bit. It’s now being released in the middle of a very competitive summer. Were you happy with that decision? Oliver Stone : I’ve never done a summer movie, believe it or not. Except for “Natural Born Killers,” but that was August, late summer. This is my first time out there in the big leagues. So I’m excited in a way. MTV : Do you think “Savages” will play well for that younger summer audience? Stone : I think it plays well. I don’t know that it would play completely to the “Hunger Games” crowd because we have a different kind of sexuality and the take on violence is real for us. It’s fun and exciting. It’s a wild ride. You don’t know what’s going to happen. I think the unpredictability is what makes it work. MTV : Can you give me a sense of the relationship at the heart of the story between the characters played by Blake, Taylor and Aaron. Stone : They are all friends and they believe in free love, and they happen to be growing some grass. One of them [Johnson] is doing good around the world. The other one [Kitsch] is an Afghanistan and Iraq veteran who’s his best buddy from school; they have a partnership. The girl [Lively] is from Laguna. They met on the beach, basically. MTV : It sounds like just about every hot young actor was in the running for these roles. Stone : I met with every pot dealer I could. [ Laughs ] For the girl, I had to meet a few of the younger newcomers because I did not know who they were. I saw [Blake’s] work and I was very impressed with “[The Private Live of] Pippa Lee.” And she was very strong in “The Town.” I think people that know her from “Gossip Girl” will be surprised. She is beautiful and she is sexy. She is hot. That’s what a lot of fans would say about her. MTV : Has “Savages” received a rating yet? Stone : We got a hard R. It’s an intense movie but it’s a different style than “Natural Born Killers.” It has a lush look. It has some of that sun-drenched romanticism that I like. It’s not just action, it is also romantic. MTV : “Savages” will be surrounded by some big summer blockbusters. You’ve managed to avoid tentpole movies, though you did almost direct a “Mission: Impossible” at one point. Stone : Well, we tried to make a “Mission” at that time, which was ahead of its time in terms of the story. I looked at it as a vehicle that was supersmart. [But] they could never pick a script. With “Mission Impossible,” you have to hit these beats all the time. MTV : It sounds like it’s not a regret for you. Stone : It’s all steroids now. I mean “Iron Man 2” is unwatchable, as is “Transformers 2.” It’s not my kind of moviemaking. “Savages” is a different kind of movie. It’s realistic and at the same time it has a bit of that summer pop feel. MTV : What’s the status of your TV series, “The Untold History of the United States”? Stone : That one’s a bitch. It’s a bitch in my butt. MTV : It will begin airing on Showtime in November? Stone : Yeah, we will make that for sure, but there are so many factors and fact checking. It’s a lot of work. It’s 21 hours and each hour has to work like a movie. I’m dealing with an important issue to me. That’s a legacy for me. Something that matters. It may not matter to most people, but it does matter to me. This is a perception of our time that is completely different from what we’re hearing in magazines and in our newspapers. We deal with all types of things, such as the nature of the atomic bomb, why was it used, why it should not have been used. It’s all kinds of stuff. Reagan’s legacy, our national security state, we go after all of it. MTV : Do you narrate it? Stone : Yes, I narrate it as well. Check out Oliver Stone’s “Savages” in theaters July 6, and “The Untold History of the United States” on Showtime in November. It’s Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated summer movies . My name is Jess, I’m 15 years old and I’m from Pennsylvania….

My name is Jess, I’m 15 years old and I’m from Pennsylvania. I’ve been a huge fan of Justin from the start. On Justin’s official Facebook page he would reply to people’s comments on his wall because he wasn’t as famous yet. So, I decided to write on his wall and see if he would answer. On July 5 th , 2009   he answered me.  He said “its me…and go after your dreams.” AHHH!! On December 15 th , 2009 I finally got to meet Justin Bieber. My friends and I got VIP passes for Pop-Con. We got to meet Justin and Selena Gomez. I can’t even describe how excited I was. We waited for 3 hours in line to meet him. When it was finally my turn to get a picture with him I just froze! When I walked up to him he gave me a big hug and we took the picture. After he said, “Are you excited for the show?” I said… YEAH!! I was in shock. He gave me a hug goodbye and I left. I was so happy that I finally got to meet him, if only it lasted for more than 2 minutes! That night I stayed at a hotel across from the concert. Justin’s dancers and Dan Kanter were staying there and were in the lobby. My friends and I got pictures with all of them and talked to them. I saw Dan Kanter standing by himself so I walked up to him and we started talking. I asked him, “Do you wear that hat to all the concerts?” He laughed and said that he LOVES that hat. He was so friendly that we talked for a while. That was just the start of My Bieber Experience. I’ve seen Justin in concert 7 times. At Pop-Con, q102 Jingle Ball ’09, q102 Jingle Ball ’10, and 4 of his My World Tour concerts. In Trenton NJ, at the Wells Fargo Center, MADISON SQUARE GARDEN and in Allentown. At the Trenton NJ concert, I even met one of Justin’s dancers, Marvin Millora. I gave Marvin a CHUCK NORRIS poker chip to give Justin, because I know he LOVES Chuck. After the concert, I tweeted Marvin to see if Justin ever got the chip. And what do you know… He tweeted me back! Marvin said, “Yes he did actually.” I was so excited! I REALLY wanted to go to the Madison Square Garden concert because that is where he was shooting his movie! I begged my dad to get my sister and I tickets but he said it was too late. 2 days before the concert my dad told me he got us tickets! My sister and I sat in a box suite and watched the best concert of our lives! My friends and I got VIP tickets for the Allentown concert and sat in row 6. This was the closest I’ve ever sat at one of his concerts. At this concert we got to go to sound check and go to a lunch with Justin’s backup singers, Legacy, Jessica Jarrell and Vita Chambers! My friends and I talked to Micah, one of the singers, most of the time. He was SO nice!! After the concert, my friends and I went to the tour busses and hung out with the dancers, Legacy, Dan Kanter, Kenny, and Ryan Good. When I was talking with Dan, he said to me “You look so familiar,” I was freaking out inside because he must of remembered talking to me at the hotel. My sister was with us and she thought Nick Demoura was REALLY cute; they were talking for a while! All of a sudden she goes “I’m hungry,” Nick had food so he gave my sister a bite of what he was eating! I was cracking up. Justin’s crew is so welcoming and friendly. I was one of the lucky winners to win an autograph of Justin’s and a piece of the Never Say Never film! That was very special. I won’t say that my Bieber experience has officially ended because hopefully it never will.  I hope to meet Justin and his crew again! -@jp_jbforeverr Original post: My name is Jess, I’m 15 years old and I’m from Pennsylvania….

Jessica Simpson: Inside the Delivery Room (?)

Jessica Simpson hasn’t even given birth to her baby girl Maxi yet, but that’s not about to stop one tabloid from taking us INSIDE THE DRAMATIC DELIVERY! You gotta love that on the week Brad and Angelina get engaged , for real, that In Touch will make up some other cover story. Why not lead with Brange? After all, they’ve gotten engaged so many times before, according to your magazine … why not cash in on the real thing when people might actually buy it?! In any case, Jessica Simpson is ready to pop any day now, which makes this odd cover – how can you be inside a delivery that hasn’t taken place? – sort of justified. Sort of. It’s possible Jess has already elected to have a c-section, is under hypnosis to soothe her cold sweats and has already planned her first words to her baby. Still, none of this has happened yet, because she is enormously pregnant. We’ll know when she gives birth and Jessica Simpson will provide all the Jessica Simpson quotes we need at that time. How could ITW compare with that now?

Mystikal Gets 81 Days In Jail For Probation Violation

Cash Money CEO Birdman confirms to MTV News that the label will continue to support the New Orleans rapper. By Nadeska Alexis Mystikal Photo: Daniel Boczarski/Getty Images Mystikal inked a new deal with Cash Money Records in December to release his upcoming sixth studio album, Original, but the New Orleans rapper will have to delay work on his LP due to legal troubles. Mystikal, born Michael Tyler, has been sentenced to three months in jail for probation violation. On Monday, Louisiana State District Judge Tony Marabella handed down the three-month sentence for the 41-year-old rapper, who was arrested in February and charged with a misdemeanor for domestic abuse battery. The arrest was in violation of his five-year probation, stemming from sexual battery and extortion charges that landed him in a Louisiana prison from 2004 to 2010 . A spokesperson for Cash Money CEO Birdman issued a statement to MTV News, confirming the label will continue to support Mystikal’s career, emphasizing that the arrest will not affect their relationship. Birdman’s rep added that Mystikal will turn himself in on May 14 to being the sentence, but he will only serve 81 days, since Marabella is crediting him for the nine days he spent behind bars after the February arrest. During a March visit to “RapFix Live,” Mystikal revealed a few details about his anticipated album, including an upcoming collaboration with Cash Money labelmates Drake and Busta Ryhmes. “I’m telling you, this album is gonna be so well worth the wait, Sway, believe that,” Mystikal told MTV News’ Sway Calloway. “Busta [Rhymes] was one of the first artists I worked with when I first came home. Busta came out there, came all the way to Baton Rouge. I’m talking about we got it in.” In mid-March, Mystikal dropped the video for his album’s lead single, “Original,” which featured appearances from Lil Wayne and Birdman and gave fans a glimpse of the luxurious YMCMB lifestyle. Original will be Mystikal’s first album since 2001’s Tarantula. Related Videos Hurricane Mystikal Storms ‘RapFix’ Related Artists Mystikal

Is Tupac Coachella Hologram The Future Of Touring?

‘It’s not something that would be particularly easy for another artist to emulate,’ says veteran manager Danny Goldberg. By Gil Kaufman Tupac hologram at Coachella Photo: Getty Images Sure, the laser Pink Floyd show is totally awesome and the Beatles cover band totally nailed “Penny Lane.” But after the rapturous response to the Tupac
 Shakur hologram
at Coachella, you can be sure phones are ringing off the hook this week all over Hollywood with calls to the Digital Domain wizards behind the stunt. Think of the possibilities: The Doors resurrected with a young Jim Morrison, Nirvana on tour with a virtual Kurt Cobain or a resurrected Tupac and Biggie sharing a stage for a greatest hits show. But does the success of the Tupac mini-set mean that holograms are the touring industry’s version of 3-D movies? “I thought it was great in that particular moment,” said veteran manager Danny Goldberg, who has worked with everyone from Nirvana and Led Zeppelin to Sonic Youth and the Hives, who he was on hand to see at Coachella. “They were evoking a certain nostalgia for [the era of] gangsta rap and I thought it worked in that context and was exciting and special. I think it’s not something that would be particularly easy for another artist to emulate.” Goldberg said certain things work best the first time and if someone else was to try a holo-show they would have to find a way to make it new again, otherwise it might just seem cheesy and derivative. Part of that potential pitfall is the legacy of the artist. For example, if Paul McCartney announced a tour with a virtual John Lennon, Beatles fans would likely see that as being in bad taste and not show up. “It’s another tool in the toolbox of technology, but some tools should only be used sparingly,” he said, adding that he thought the execution at Coachella was stellar. Making the trick to work on a larger scale, or even on a full-blown tour
is unlikely given the unique aspects of the Coachella gig. “Part of what made that effective was that it was a surprise, coupled with authentic living, breathing superstars in Dre and Snoop and not over-relying on it,” said Goldberg. “I wouldn’t look at it as the beginning of a big trend, but as an amazing moment.” Fans may get another chance to experience the trick when the upcoming Cirque du Soleil-created Michael Jackson show in Las Vegas opens next year. While a spokesperson for the Jackson estate would not confirm that the MJ show would use similar technology, when MTV News spoke to Cirque President and CEO Daniel Lamarre in 2010 he said that, “The new technology that we want to bring to [the permanent] Vegas [show] will be more theatrical,” promising that fans, “Will see Vegas become the home of Michael Jackson and people will come from all over the world to experience the uniqueness of the technology that we want to bring there.” At the time, Lamarre hinted at the use of “3-D technologies and hologram technologies to allow people to see Michael Jackson onstage.” Also on hand to watch holo-Pac at Coachella was Dave Brooks, managing editor of live entertainment trade magazine Venues Today . He said he could definitely see the technology employed in several ways. “Obviously the posthumous thing is one idea,” he said. “Think about the Michael Jackson Cirque tour, or the Who bringing back a hologram of [late drummer] Keith Moon. [Bringing back] dead band members could be a way to enhance the show and plenty of people would be impressed to see a hologram of Keith Moon.” As for whether an all-hologram tour could win over audiences, based on what he’s seen so far, Brooks said it wasn’t likely … yet. “Anything is possible, but from that one glimpse of the technology I can’t say it’s enough to make a whole tour of just that.” In fact, he said having the hologram Tupac on stage for two songs was great, but it would likely have gotten tired if the West Coast legend had hung around all night. Given the amount of all-star collaborations among pop and hip-hop stars these days, Brooks said the other way he could see the technology deployed is to briefly bring some of those one-off singles to life in concert. “Because of the nature of pop music these days, with collaborations like Calvin Harris and Rihanna and Alicia Keys and Jay-Z, this could definitely add a ‘wow’ factor,” he said. “It’s one thing to have [the other singer] on a screen, but if you could have them there in 3-D it would impress more.” Related Photos Tupac’s Hologram At Coachella Related Artists Tupac

Weekend Receipts: Hunger Games Slays Lukewarm Stooges and Co.

This is getting a little ridiculous: The Hunger Games claimed its fourth straight weekend box-office win on Sunday, mopping the floor with weak-sauce competition including The Three Stooges , Cabin in the Woods , and a brutally performing Lockout . Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. The Hunger Games Gross: $21,500,000 ($337,070,000) Screens: 3,916 (PSA $5,490) Weeks: 4 (Change: -35.1%) Where will it end? One can only presume that Zac Efron and Nicholas Sparks will tag team to knock this off the top next week with The Lucky One , but I’m more preoccupied with The Hunger Games ‘ foreign tally — $194 million and counting, with late European markets (including Spain and Italy) still to come. Is a $650 million global take doable? $700 million? And can you believe how much money Gary Ross walked away from for the sequels? Oy. 2. The Three Stooges Gross: $17,100,000 (new) Screens: 3,545 (PSA $4,918) Weeks: 1 Speaking of “oy”… Not terrible, I guess, for recycled slapstick from the mid-20th century, though it clearly needed more nun-kini . 3. The Cabin in the Woods Gross: $14,850,000 (new) Screens: 2,811 (PSA: $5,283) Weeks: 1 I can only imagine the surprise of Lionsgate accountants this morning as they pore over their box-office spreadsheets, scroll down from the Hunger Games numbers, and quizzically exchange glances about this strange other movie their studio opened last Friday. I think is what they call “gravy” in Hollywood. 4. Titanic 3D Gross: $11,625,000 ($44,419,000) Screens: 2,697 (PSA: $4,310) Weeks: 2 (Change: -32.7%) No, wait — this is what they call gravy. Relatively slight drop, though, for a 3-D film, which could mean a surprising showing next week against top-five hopeful Chimpanzee . Also: I can’t believe I just wrote that sentence. 5. American Reunion Gross: $10,700,000 ($39,900,000) Screens: 3,203 (PSA $3,341) Weeks: 2 (Change: -50.3) Whatever. 9. Lockout Gross: $6,250,000 (new) Screens: 2,308 (PSA $2,708) Weeks: 1 And goodbye, Guy Pearce, action hero . We hardly knew ye. [Figures via Box Office Mojo ] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Shock Over ‘Hunger Games’ Directorgate: New Captain Needed Fast!

Which Hollywood heavy-hitter will step in to take helm of ‘Catching Fire’? By Jason Kaufman Jennifer Lawrence in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate The big “Hunger Games” news this week wasn’t how much cash continued to pour in, but the director who was on his way out. Gary Ross released a statement saying he would not be back for the sequel. “Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct ‘Catching Fire,’ ” Ross said. “As a writer and a director, I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule. I loved making ‘The Hunger Games’ — it was the happiest experience of my professional life.” “Hunger Games” studio Lionsgate expressed remorse at Ross’ departure. “We’re very sorry that Gary Ross has chosen not to direct ‘Catching Fire.’ We were really looking forward to making the movie with him. He did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work.” MTV Movies Managing Editor Eric Ditzian thought something was up. “I am frankly surprised he’s not coming back, but in retrospect, I could see the implication when he was speaking to us, he was very reluctant to talk about ‘Catching Fire,’ ” Ditzian told the panel on the latest edition of MTV News’ “Talk Nerdy.” Watch Gary Ross on “Hunger Games” Sequels” “Nerdy” host Josh Wigler expressed the need for urgency on the part of Lionsgate to make their hire soon. “Whoever they get to direct ‘Fire’ needs to have started yesterday. They really need to make this hire pretty fast; production is moving in August.” Who will step in for Ross? On Ditzian’s wish list: Darren Aronofsky. “Great with the hand-held camera, great with these intimate first-person narratives. But it’s not going to happen. He’s busy.” Ditzian’s pick for the auteur to drive Katniss’ next chapter is Oscar-winning Danny Boyle, who’s no stranger to hand-held cameras himself and has proved time and time again, from “Trainspotting” to “127 Hours,” that he’s a master of first-person tales as well. The MTV Movies staff also predicts the short list of directors will include Steven Soderbergh, John Hillcoat and J.J. Abrams. Carly Rae Jepsen Answers Your Twitter Questions!

‘Call Me Maybe’ singer covers everything from her first impression of Justin Bieber to whether she believes in love at first sight. By Christina Garibaldi Carly Rae Jepsen Photo: MTV News Carly Rae Jepsen ‘s life has certainly changed over the past few months. The onetime “Canadian Idol” contestant is riding high off the success of hit single “Call Me Maybe,” and she just beat out her boss, Justin Bieber , on the U.K. charts, taking the #1 spot . Of course, Jepsen credits Bieber with much of her success , and she also knows she wouldn’t be where she is without her fans. Jepsen recently took some time out of her busy schedule to stop by MTV News and answer some of your Twitter questions. She covered everything from her first impressions of Bieber to whether she believes in love at first sight. Read below to find out what Jepsen had to say! @AmericanBiebz: We all know what Justin thought of Carly at first, so we wanna know: What was Carly’s first impression of Justin? Carly Rae Jepsen : I thought he was charming. He’s extremely talented — and, I mean, obviously that’s pretty well-known — but in ways that I didn’t realize. I knew that he sang, I knew that he was sort of infectious in his personality, I knew that he danced, but I didn’t know how strong of a songwriter he was, and my first introduction to him was actually in his studio and he played me a couple songs he had written, and I was really impressed and I was so glad, because I really, really liked him. @majojimenz: Is Justin planning on taking Carly with him on tour? Jepsen : I don’t know! We’ll have to ask Justin, but at this point we have no real idea of when we are going to be touring. @EmmaJaneGander: Would you ever do a duet with Selena Gomez? Jepsen : Yeah, I think I’m open to collaborating with anybody. I have, like, a dream list of people that I want to collaborate with. John Mayer is on that list and Taylor Swift, actually. I think she’s an amazing songwriter. I would imagine that would be a cool combination. @JustinsEyebrow: Do you think you have a certain style of music, or are you up for anything? Jepsen : I definitely have a bit of boundaries of what I like and what would be suitable to who I am as an artist, but I don’t want to put too many limits on it at the same time. Right now, I’m really attracted to pop music, I love dance songs and artists like Robyn and La Roux. And then I come from a folky background, so I would say my music is kind of a combination of all those things, but that doesn’t mean I can’t experiment more, fall in love with something else down the line. @lovedbybieber: If Carly could change one thing in the world, what would it be? Jepsen : World hunger. @shortstufff21: If you could change anything about you what would it be and why? Jepsen : I would be taller than 5’2, have some legs on me. @carlyraeheart: Do you believe in love at first sight? Jepsen : I believe in a very strong feeling about somebody, very strong lust at first sight. I wouldn’t go as far as love, because I feel like love takes time. What would you ask Carly Rae Jepsen? The Hunger Games Sequel: Gary Ross Out as Director

Gary Ross and The Hunger Games have parted ways. Ross’ exit was all but confirmed last week, but he’s released a statement explaining why he decided to discontinue his work with the famous trilogy: “Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct Catching Fire ,” said Ross (below, right). “As a writer and a director, I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would want to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule.” “I loved making The Hunger Games. It was the happiest experience of my professional life. Lionsgate was supportive in a manner that few directors ever experience.” “They empowered me to make the film I wanted to make and backed the movie in a way that requires no explanation beyond the remarkable results.” “And contrary to what has been reported, negotiations with Lionsgate have not been problematic. They have also been very understanding of this difficult decision.” “I also cannot say enough about the people I worked with: Producer Nina Jacobson, a great collaborator and a true friend; the brilliant Suzanne Collins, who entrusted us with her most amazing and important story; the remarkable Jennifer Lawrence whose performance exceeded my wildest expectations, and the rest of the incredible cast, whom I am proud to call my friends.” “To the fans I want to say thank you for your support your faith, your enthusiasm and your trust. Hard as this may be to understand I am trying to keep that trust with you. Thank you all. It’s been a wonderful experience.” The studio also released a statement addressing the news , saying, “We’re very sorry that Gary Ross has chosen not to direct Catching Fire.” “We were really looking forward to making the movie with him. He did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work. This will not be the end of our relationship, as we consider Ross to be part of the Lionsgate family.” Sad news, but inevitable from the sound of it. And now, the search for the new director begins. Any thoughts on who should direct Catching Fire ? [Photo: Fame/Flynet]
