‘Avengers’ Version Of Hulk ‘More Accessible,’ Mark Ruffalo Says

‘He’s got a wry sense of humor about himself,’ actor tells MTV News at Tribeca Film Festival. By Kevin P. Sullivan Mark Ruffalo at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of “Avengers” Photo: Andrew H. Walker/ Getty Images Of all the actors coming together to form the Avengers, Mark Ruffalo decidedly had the most to prove. After two previous Hulk films left fans largely unsatisfied, a new actor in the role could either lead to another letdown or, finally, to a version that felt true to the comics. Fortunately for Ruffalo, early reviews of ” The Avengers ” overwhelming point to his version of Bruce Banner as one of the highlights of the film. MTV News caught up with Ruffalo at the closing-night ceremonies for the Tribeca Film Festival to get his take on the Hulk’s positive reception and to find out what was different this time around. Ruffalo felt the pressure that came with the role of the Hulk as soon as he signed on to be the third actor in as many films. “It was very daunting. I’ve never had a part so harshly reviewed before I even shot a single frame of film,” he said. “The fanboys had a lot to say about it — granted, they had a great deal of care about this part and a lot of sentimentality as well, as do I, growing up on it.” The actor said that the latest technology gave him the biggest advantage over the first two iterations of the character. “There have been other great performances as Banner. The only real edge that I had was that the technology had changed so much since that last movie that I actually got to play the Hulk,” Ruffalo said. This latest version of the Hulk takes a different approach to the character, giving him a dry sense of humor about his condition, but Ruffalo gave credit to both Eric Bana and Edward Norton for helping lay the foundation in the first two films. “I just think it’s a natural progression of the other performances. When you find the guy at this point, he’s tired of running. He’s got a wry sense of humor about himself,” Ruffalo said. “He’s ready to turn and face the world. He’s got a charming world-weariness that’s kind of knocked the edges off of him and made him slightly more accessible.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Avengers.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit . ‘Hunger Games’ Crosses $600 Million Globally

The Avengers faces a tough battle if they want to top Katniss and company’s expected $400 million domestic earnings. By Fallon Prinzivalli Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate After its sixth weekend in theaters, The Hunger Games” is still lighting up the box office . Katniss and company’s cumulative gross is currently a whopping $601 million worldwide, after raking in $11.2 million in the U.S. and another $7.4 million overseas this weekend. Standing tall at #4, the dystopian franchise’s weekend dip was 23 percent, which is the lowest decline yet for the movie (its second weekend in theaters saw a 60 percent drop), according to Box Office Guru . And it wasn’t far behind third-place “The Lucky One,” which earned $11.3 following its second weekend. It looks like the assembly of Earth’s mightiest heroes won’t even be able to stop Katniss’ estimated goal. With “The Hunger Games” sitting comfortably with a domestic total of $372.4 million, it’s going to take more than Thor and his mighty hammer to bring “Marvel’s The Avengers” to the top. If “The Hunger Games” can rake in $400 million domestically ( like box-office experts predicted ), it would outperform the first films in both “Twilight” and “Harry Potter.” As audiences gear up for the highly anticipated Marvel film, only time will tell what this weekend will bring the first film in Katniss’ franchise. And as far as the success of a sequel since Gary Ross is no longer on board to direct, it isn’t something Josh Hutcherson , who plays Peeta, is particularly worried about. “Gary, I think, brought so much to the movie, and he created that whole world that was so close to the book and so perfect in so many ways that it’s going to be hard for Francis [Lawrence] to come in, for sure,” Hutcherson told MTV News at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. “But Francis is extremely talented and everyone I’ve talked to says he’s the best guy in the world. So I think he’s going to bring a lot [to the sequel].” What film to you think will be the bigger box-office smash: “The Hunger Games” or “The Avengers”? Sound off in the comments! Celebs to Jessica Simpson: Where is the Baby?!

Jessica Simpson has been pregnant for so long, and is so enormous, fellow stars are on pins and needles wondering where that giant baby girl is. Maybe it’s the non-stop Jessica Simpson quotes concerning her pregnancy that have slowed. Maybe it’s the rumor that she already gave birth (false). Whatever the reason, some inquiring minds really want to know on Twitter. “Has Jessica Simpson had that baby yet?! I’m anxious,” Katy Perry wrote. Chelsea Handler was thinking the same thing. “How has jessica simpson still not given birth to this baby? I’m getting frightened,” she wrote. So are we. Simpson, who is still pregnant , announced her pregnancy on Halloween, six full months ago, well after tabloids got wind of it. It’s got to be due any minute now. Whenever little Maxi arrives, you can expect the fiancee of Eric Johnson to Tweet non-stop updates. Seriously. This is a 31-year-old woman who has mused about her “swamp ass” and “the big O” of pregnant sex. There’s no such thing as TMI. [Photo: WENN.com]

‘Game Of Thrones’ Births A Shadow Baby

Things get weird on the latest episode, and MTV’s ‘Watching the Thrones’ is ready to dive into it head-on. By Josh Wigler Shadow Baby on “Game of Thrones” Photo: HBO In case you didn’t realize it before, Sunday night’s episode of “Game of Thrones” should have made it quite clear: Westeros can be very, very weird. Think about all the various forms of magic cropping up all over the Seven Kingdoms: the crippled Brandon Stark is able to walk again by way of his wolf dreams. North of the Wall, humanoid monsters with voices like crackling ice exist, with the ability to raise their victims from the dead. And across the Narrow Sea, the first dragons to be born in decades are beginning to grow under the love and care of exiled princess Daenerys Targaryen. And now, on top of all of that, we have … a shadow baby?! Needless to say, episode four of the fantasy series’ second season, “Garden of Bones,” was a strange one. Keep reading for our take on the latest trip to Westeros, and watch the video below for more from our weekly “Watching the Thrones” roundup! Hungry Like the Wolf Robb Stark is a hugely important part of “A Clash of Kings,” the novel upon which season two is based. But his physical presence leaves something to be desired — which is to say, he’s rarely seen in the book, mostly talked about. That’s not the case on “Game of Thrones.” Here, Robb is fully present, as seen in the opening moments of “Garden of Bones.” Robb’s direwolf, Grey Wind, grows stronger with every battle, and Robb’s skills as a tactician and leader of men are improving at the same pace. This latest episode also pulled the curtain back on something not seen in the books, but hugely important to Robb’s character: a little trace of love. But that nurse on the battlefield does not go by the name Jeyne Westerling as she does in the books; indeed, as she presents herself, she’s hardly a noble-born woman at all. Is it just an alias for now, a parlor trick that Jeyne is playing? Or has “Thrones” altered Robb’s love interest in a seriously significant way? The Greatest City in the World Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Qarth! At long last, Dany and her khalasar have reached civilization. And if the people of Qarth are to be believed, Dany has arrived at the greatest city in the world. If you’re a bit skeptical of that claim, that’s more than fair. But even if Qarth as a city doesn’t necessarily live up to the hype (and that itself is up for debate), there are things that happen in Qarth that rank high on the list of all-time greatest “Thrones” moments. Needless to say, Dany has some interesting times ahead of her. The Ghost of Harrenhal Poor Arya Stark. It’s just not getting any better for the little girl forced to live as a little boy. Arya, Gendry and Hot Pie found themselves at the mercy of the Tickler and the Mountain in this week’s episode, watching the pair interrogate their prisoners to death with a disturbingly clever combination of a rat, a bucket and a torch. Not pretty stuff. Even the arrival of Tywin Lannister is hardly a mercy; he’s more civilized than their initial captors, sure, but he’s a Lannister all the same. On the bright side, now Arya has a few more names to add to her people-to-kill list alongside Queen Regent Cersei and her wicked son Joffrey. Draining the Poison Speaking of Joffrey, he’s just getting worse and worse with each episode, if you can believe it. From beheading Ned Stark to threatening Sansa’s life with a crossbow held at point-blank range, Joffrey’s wicked ways seem to know no bounds. And that’s not even the worst of it: The way he made the two prostitutes purchased for him by Tyrion torture each other was absolutely sickening to watch. Joffrey is easily one of the most loathsome characters in all of “Ice and Fire” lore, if not the most loathsome — and believe it or not, he’s even more unlikable on the show. Brutal, brutal, brutal. Shadow Baby! While the latest episode of “Thrones” ended the show’s three-week kid-killing streak , it made up for the combo-breaker by having us witness the priestess Melisandre give birth to a shadow baby. A shadow baby. Clearly, it’s a bit more complicated than that, but it’s strange and horrific to behold all the same. If you ever doubted that Melisandre has magic at her disposal, doubt her no longer. Perhaps she hasn’t backed the right horse in the race for the Iron Throne, but she definitely has formidable power on her side, as Davos can attest to firsthand. As for where that shadow baby’s headed next? Readers of the books certainly know — and if you haven’t read the books, well, keep the Kleenex on hand. You’re going to need it. Tell us what you thought of the latest “Thrones” in the comments section! Related Videos Watching The ‘Thrones’ Related Photos ‘Game Of Thrones’ Season Two
