HBO Cancels Hung, How to Make It In America, Bored to Death [PICS]

Sad news for fans of Rebecca Creskoff and Lake Bell : you’ll never get to see them naked again…on their HBO shows, anyway. The cable network announced yesterday that after a subpar season for both series, they are canceling Hung and How to Make It in America , along with the Jason Schwartzman / Ilsa Fisher comedy Bored to Death . Hung and Bored to Death both saw their ratings drop by over half this year- 2.31 million people tuned in for the Hung Season 2 finale last year, while a relatively small 930,000 stuck around ’til the end of season 3. Similarly, Bored to Death saw a sharp drop from an average 1.1 million viewers per episode in season 2 to an average 240,000 for this year’s season 3. [Guess it really was boring.- SC] On the other hand, How to Make It in America was never really able to gather the following that propelled the similar HBO series Entourage through eight seasons; even as Lake Bell’ s nude debut spurred an (ahem) swell of interest here at Mr. Skin, the series topped out at 560,000 viewers per episode. In comparison, Game of Thrones was considered HBO’s breakout success this year; the season 1 finale drew 3.9 million viewers for its initial airing, with an average 8.3 million people taking in each episode across DVR, HBO GO, and regular ol’ cable. Are you bummed about Hung ? Wish How to Make It had made it? Or are you just looking forward to whatever nude tricks HBO has up its sleeve? Let us know in the comments!

Top Newsmakers Of 2011

MTV News counts down the stories that mattered to you most, from Lady Gaga’s call to action to Amy Winehouse’s untimely death. By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: Getty Images Like you, we’re pop-culture obsessives. That’s why from stars revealing baby bumps on live TV to the end (or near-end) of two of the most monumental movie franchises in recent memory and the deaths of a pair of the aughts’ quirkiest, most singular personalities, MTV News brought you everything you needed to know about the bold-faced names that mattered to you most in 2011. We looked back at the many big stories of the year and came up with a list of our Top 10 Newsmakers of 2011: 10. Amy Winehouse’s Death At age 27, British soul belter Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London apartment on July 23. The “Rehab” singer had lived a life on the edge, with multiple arrests and stints in detox, and while we were pulling for her, the news of her death from alcohol intoxication was a gut punch. As MTV readers flooded us with remembrances of her sultry voice and no-B.S. persona, everyone from Katy Perry and Rihanna to Nicki Minaj shared their love, fellow musicians paid tribute at the VMAs and I recalled the first time I saw her perform in the U.S. and how the pain in her songs set the stage for such confessional singers as her friend Adele . 9. Michael Jackson’s Daughter, Paris, Visits ‘Ellen’

Paris reveals best advice Michael gave her. By Gil Kaufman Paris Jackson appears on “Ellen” Photo: Warner Bros Paris Jackson will give her first-ever solo interview on Thursday morning (December 15) when she appears on “The Ellen DeGenres Show” to promote her upcoming acting debut. After a cloistered childhood, Paris, 13, the only daughter of late pop icon Michael Jackson , opened up to Ellen about her formerly sheltered life and how her dad’s music inspired her acting. In excerpts released before the airing, Paris explained that her dad helped her prepare for her upcoming first movie role, in which she’ll play Lundon in “Lundon’s Bridge and the Three Keys,” an adaptation of the fantasy series based on writer Dennis Christen’s novels. “When I was really little my dad was in the movie ‘Moonwalker’ and I knew he could sing really well but I didn’t know he could act,” she said. “I saw that and I said, ‘Wow, I want to be just like him.’ ” She said Michael also gave her at-home acting lessons. “We would do improv together. He would give us little scenarios. He would (say), ‘OK, in this scene you’re going to cry’ and I’d cry on the spot.” In one of the most (literally) revealing moments, Paris explained what it felt like for herself and her siblings, Prince and Blanket, to wear disguises for most of their young lives. “I’m like, ‘This is stupid. Why am I wearing a mask?’ But I kind of realized the older I got like he only tried to protect us and he’d explain that to us too,” she said. The masks, in fact, helped the three kids live as normal a life as they possibly could considering that their dad was one of the most-sought-after paparazzi targets on earth. “I do have like a regular childhood,” she said. “I mean, I’m treated the same. When I came to [my new school] they didn’t know who I was. I was like, ‘Yes, I have a chance to be normal.'” When asked if she realized how big a deal her dad was when she was a child, Paris admitted, “I just thought, ‘He’s got a few songs out,’ but I figured everyone did that.” In the action-animation hybrid “Lundon,” Paris will voice the lead character, a human, in a fantasy adventure in which “sea magic turns a dolphin into a human, a teenage boy into a dragonfly and a loving jellyfish queen into an evil fairy godmother.” Among the other voices in the movie are former CNN personality Larry King and his wife, Shawn, and ex ‘NSYNC member Joey Fatone. Paris told DeGeneres that her dad warned her before his surprise death in June 2009 that he would not be around forever. “He said, ‘If I die tomorrow always remember what I told you.’ I took his advice and I remembered everything he told me,” she said. Sam Hurd, Chicago Bears Wide Receiver, Busted By Homeland Security Agents in MASSIVE Drug Sting

Stop us if ya Hurd this one … Apparently, Chicago Bears receiver Sam Hurd was arrested on Wednesday by undercover Homeland Security agents after attempting to set up regular purchases of marijuana and cocaine to expand a drug distribution system he already had going . The Chicago Sun-Times broke the story earlier. The Bears said this morning: “We are aware of Sam’s arrest and are continuing to gather details. We are disappointed whenever these circumstances arise.” The former Dallas Cowboys receiver signed a three-year, $5.1 million deal July 29. He has only eight catches this season so far, and has been caught once. According to reports, Hurd met with an undercover Homeland Security agent to buy 5-10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week . He would then distribute the narcotics in Chicago, according to his (foiled) plan. Most stunningly, Hurd said he was already dealing four kilos of cocaine every week in the greater Chicago area with a co-conspirator, but that wasn’t cutting it. The agency believes Hurd committed 21 possible violations of federal statute in a timeline that goes from July of this year through last night’s apprehension. Safe to say, despite his close physical proximity to Tim Tebow last Sunday in the Bears’ OT loss to the Denver Broncos, those two ballers are poles apart.

The X Factor Results: Who Moved On?

Following one of the most surprising, emotional results of the season (we miss you, Rachel!), The X Factor pretty much stuck to the script on this week’s results show. After dragging out the elimination for as long as the show could – first, Florence + The Machine played, then Melanie and Chris advanced to next Wednesday’s finale – it came down to Marcus Canty and Josh Krajcik. And the latest hopeful sent packing was… Marcus Canty! The fun dancer simply could not overcome a performance from the previous night that Simon Cowell labeled as ” grotesque and horrific .” “God blessed me so much,” Canty said after his name was called “It’s not over yet.” Did America make the right choice in sending Marcus home?
