‘Sucker Punch’ Stars Hope Action Flick ‘Hits You In The Gut’

Vanessa Hudgens teases MTV News at the film’s premiere, ‘Sucker punch means you don’t know what’s coming.’ By Kara Warner Emily Browning, Jamie Chung and Vanessa Hudgens at the L.A. premiere of “Sucker Punch” Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Images For those who’ve seen the trailers, TV spots and highly stylized posters, you’re likely aware that “Sucker Punch” descends upon theaters on Friday. Zack Snyder’s estrogen-fueled flick has been billed as a curious, complex, action-adventure-fantasy, but despite the promotional push, it’s safe to say that plenty of people are still scratching their heads, wondering, “What the heck is ‘Sucker Punch’?” MTV News headed out to the film’s star-studded, slightly rain-soaked premiere in Hollywood on Wednesday night to find out. “Sucker punch means you don’t know what’s coming,” Vanessa Hudgens said simply. “It’s being knocked out by something unexpected,” co-star Jena Malone added. “Sucker punch is this idea of taking an unexpected blow,” Abbie Cornish said, adding in a brief plot summary to her definition as well. “A lot of the girls are totally unprepared for what’s about to happen to them. They’ve been living in this institution and Baby Doll [played by Emily Browning] comes along and changes their whole perception of freedom, of hope, of escapism,” she explained. “And so their ways of life are challenged, they’re sucker-punched with this whole idea of freedom.” Director Zack Snyder, who created the story along with co-writer Steve Shibuya, continued with the “expect the unexpected” theme. “I think it means two things: If you have preconceived ideas about what these girls are capable of, you’re going to get a sucker punch,” he said. “And also too, there’s actually a thing in the movie, a physical thing that supplies the sucker punch as well.” Carla Gugino said the title of the film and the idea itself are fun because there’s a lot left up to interpretation or theories. She also echoed the sentiments of her co-stars. “To me, a sucker punch is one of those things you least expect, that you’re unprepared for, but that hits you in the gut,” she said. “And I think that hopefully this movie is, and this movie embodies that.” Are you planning to go see “Sucker Punch”? ‘Hunger Games’ Experts Weigh In: Who Should Play Peeta?

Josh Hutcherson, Alex Pettyfer and Hunter Parrish appear to be the front-runners, but nothing is confirmed yet. By Christina Garibaldi Alex Pettyfer Photo: Getty Images Last week, MTV News exclusively revealed that Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence landed the highly coveted role of Katniss Everdeen in the film adaptation of “The Hunger Games.” Experts and fans were mixed on the thought of the tall, blond 20-year-old taking on the role of the 16-year-old, dark-haired heroine, but it seems like Jennifer can rest easy for now, since the debate has shifted to who will play fellow Hunger Games competitor Peeta. “It’s definitely going to be someone close to her age,” Down With the Capitol administrator Theresa Morgan told MTV News. “I think it will make it easier to cast someone for Peeta.” Many names have already been thrown into the mix, including “The Kids Are All Right” star Josh Hutcherson , who confessed he has met with director Gary Ross. “I love Peeta,” Hutcherson told Entertainment Weekly. “The character is so much who I am — self-deprecating, a people person. And he’d be such a great character to play!” Hutcherson seems to be a front-runner for the District 12 male tribute, but he will have some stiff competition from Alex Pettyfer and fan favorite Hunter Parrish . “We love Josh Hutcherson,” the Hob administrator Megan Scott said. “There’s Alex, who I really like, but Hunter is a huge fan favorite. When I think of these guys with Jennifer, they all go well together.” “Our whole site thinks Hunter will be perfect,” Morgan said. “He looks the role and acts the role. A lot of people are thinking he sounds like Peeta.” Ross might agree, since Parrish recently told E! Online he has met with the movie’s producers. “I’d be grateful to get the opportunity,” he said. “Like, really grateful. It would be amazing.” Not everyone’s convinced that these leading contenders are right for the coveted “Hunger Games” role. “My favorite for Peeta is Callan McAuliffe,” Mockingjay.net administrator Kimmy West said about the “I Am Number Four” newcomer. “I think he has the acting chops, he’s relatively unknown, and he has that warm quality that Peeta has.” Who do you think should get the role of Peeta in “The Hunger Games”? Unfortunately so is the rest of her, at least for a little while, but until then this is how I’ll always remember her.

Britney Spears Wanted To ‘Experiment’ On Femme Fatale

‘I really wanted to play with my voice and change up my sound,’ she tells Rolling Stone. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears in “Hold It Against Me” Photo: Jive When Britney Spears started planning Femme Fatale, there was no doubt in her mind that she wanted to take her time and make something incredibly different from anything she’s previously released. In a chat with Rolling Stone, the singer said she thinks she accomplished what she set out to do: “make a fresh-sounding album for the clubs or something that you play in your car when you’re going out at night that gets you excited.” “I wanted it to sound different from everything else out right now,” she told the mag. “I also wanted to experiment with all the different types of music I love, which is why you hear a mixture of pop, hip-hop and dance throughout the album. I also really wanted to play with my voice and change up my sound here and there, which was really fun.” Her first two singles certainly fit that bill. “Hold It Against Me” and “Till the World Ends” are sexy dance jams that are just a taste of what the album is about. “I really didn’t want to record anything on this album that could be mistaken for anyone else out there. I think my first two singles, ‘Hold It Against Me’ and ‘Till the World Ends,’ sound completely different from anything else,” she said. “And I think when my fans hear the rest of Femme Fatale, they’ll see how fresh every song is.” On the album, Spears worked with longtime collaborators Dr. Luke and Max Martin, but she also hooked up with will.i.am on the song “Big Fat Bass.” “The Peas make incredibly catchy, fun pop/dance records and I love will.i.am’s style,” she raved. “I have always wanted to do a song with him and would love to work with him more in the future. He is so interesting.” Like Spears, Luke wanted to push the boundaries for this album, and Spears described her “picky” attitude toward choosing songs, knowing that she wanted it to be “unique” from the other tracks on the radio. “I only wanted songs that I immediately connected to. I also wanted to make sure that this album was completely different from Circus or anything else I had ever recorded,” she said. “I love Circus, but I wanted something darker and edgier. I also wanted to make an album and didn’t want to just record a bunch of songs and put them together. I think Femme Fatale is really connected from start to finish.” Are you looking forward to Britney’s new music? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Britney Spears

Exclusive: Jennifer Lawrence Officially Cast In ‘Hunger Games’

Author Suzanne Collins gives Oscar-nominated actress her blessing to play Katniss Everdeen. By Kara Warner Jennifer Lawrence Photo: id-pr.com At long last, after seemingly endless debate, speculation and rumors, MTV News has received exclusive confirmation that Jennifer Lawrence has landed the highly coveted role of Katniss Everdeen in the big-screen adaptation of “The Hunger Games.” According to Lionsgate, the 20-year-old actress is a fitting choice due to her “meteoric ascent” to Hollywood stardom with her Oscar-nominated role in “Winter’s Bone,” to be followed by roles in Matthew Vaughn’s “X Men: First Class” and “The Beaver,” directed by Jodie Foster. “Hunger Games” author Suzanne Collins has already given Lawrence’s casting her blessing, via a statement from the studio. “Jennifer’s just an incredible actress,” Collins said. “So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we’d find somebody this perfect for the role. And I can’t wait for everyone to see her play it.” Director Gary Ross also praised his lead actress: “I’m so excited to work with Jen and see her bring this character to life. Katniss requires a young actress with strength, depth, complexity, tenderness, and power. There are very few people alive who can bring that to a role. Jen brings it in spades. She’s going to be an amazing Katniss.” The movie, based on Collins’ dystopian best-seller about children forced to compete in a fight-to-the-death battle, is slated to hit theaters March 23, 2012.
