It’s been nearly eight months since Melanie Amaro walked away with the inaugural X Factor title in America, but the talented singer has only first come out with her debut single this week. It’s titled “Don’t Fail Me Now,” it’s written by Livvi Franc (who is responsible for hits by such artists as Britney Spears and Kelly Clarkson) and it’s a message to Amaro’s hoofers, as these sample lyrics prove: “I’ve paid my dues, I’ve paid the price, I’ve prayed for you almost every night. I’ve walked the longest road, so don’t fail me now, feet don’t fail me now.” Give it a listen and then weigh in:
After teaming up for a pair of medal-winning relay swims this week, Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte squared off today in the 200-meter individual medley final. The Americans were co-favorites, with Phelps having owned the event in the last two Olympics, but Lochte annihilating the field in the 400-meter IM this year. Not surprisingly, one took gold and one silver today … but who won? Michael Phelps ! The most-decorated Olympian ever took home the gold in 1:54.27, just 0.27 off the world record and 0.04 off the Olympic record. Ryan Lochte won the silver medal, 0.63 back. Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh fell away through three legs but earned the bronze. Brazil’s Thiago Pereira was actually second after the breaststroke leg. The medal was Phelps’ 16th gold and record 20th overall, while Lochte reached double digits in career medals, earning #10 with the silver. He probably won’t hear from President Obama this time, but Michael Phelps’ mom was definitely psyched as he continues to cement his legacy Way to go, both of you guys! U-S-A! U-S-A!
The Colin Farrell-starring sci-fi remake Total Recall is readying for release this weekend ( read Movieline’s review here ) and while Len Wiseman’s adaptation of the 1990 Paul Verhoeven film that mixes up bullets, muscles and abstract notions of Cartesian dualism and the specious present isn’t the worst thing in the world, it is hardly memorable. (A bit of an unfortunate situation, as the whole thing is about memory.) Still, it’s important that we don’t present ourselves as the type of dweebs who get all hung up over sci-fi remakes. Sometimes, they’re damn good, as this list of ten shall prove. 10) War of the Worlds , Steven Spielberg, 2005 No masterpiece, but a thrilling piece of work with some genuinely shocking imagery. Despite the four year gap, this was the first major mainstream film that was able to take 9/11 imagery and have it make sense in an entertainment context. It lacks the cheeseball zip of the 1953 version, but it certainly works on a visceral level. (It is not my top adaption of the H.G. Wells story, however. That will forever go to Jeff Wayne and his 1978 prog rock opera. The dorks in the back know what I’m talkin’ about.) 9) The Omega Man , Boris Sagal, 1971 Charlton Heston is so secure in his house he’s not going to pay those cloaked mutant zombies no never mind! A quick shot of a vaccine prior to the deployment of biological weapons in a Russian-Chinese war keeps Heston alive, but his wits keep him safe. When he discovers he’s not the last person alive, he takes the fight direct to the horrible clan of beasts. The Omega Man is a remake of The Last Man on Earth , but also based on the novel I Am Legend . This was, of course, remade again into a film starring Will Smith which will not be seen anywhere on this list. The Omega Man is also notable for featuring an interracial love story back in 1971. Who said Heston’s politics were wholly predictable? 8) The Wiz , Sidney Lumet, 1978 No one said you’d be able to ease on down this list without some challenges. Look, The Wiz is a cool flick. Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Richard Pryor and music by Ashford and Simpson. Maybe Diana Ross doesn’t have the same je ne sais quoi as Judy Garland, but I’ve found that most friends of Dorothy are friends of the Supremes, too. And, yes, it’s sci-fi. The wizard’s practically steampunk. 7) Solaris , Steven Soderbergh, 2002 While Andrei Tarkovski’s version from 1972 is certainly the heavier of the two, Soderbergh’s streamlined and very slick production is a fascinating tone poem on loss, regret and memory. Those looking for action will find the film almost lifeless, but if you get on its wavelength you may find it quite rewarding. It ranks as one of the best gifts one filmmaker ever gave to another, as James Cameron used his considerable clout as producer to secure a budget that everyone had to know would never be recouped. 6) 1984 , Michael Radford, 1984 The 1954 version with Edmond O’Brien is a good enough adaptation, but this gem of new wave cinema really captured the essence of Orwell’s dystopian universe. This movie tends to get forgotten, overshadowed by Terry Gilliam’s Brazil , with which it shares many story and formal similarities. Nevertheless, John Hurt’s sympathetic portrayal of Winston Smith is one of his great performances, and the heavily washed out cinematography from Roger Deakins is quite extraordinary. The Eurythmics’ soundtrack album did a number on me as a kid, as well. 5) Invasion of the Body Snatchers , Phillip Kaufman, 1978 Leonard Nimoy as a sexed-up pop psychologist in ’70s San Francisco. I think it’s a given this should be on ALL the top ten lists. Loaded with lots of gratuitous nudity and plenty of icky gore, you’ll be shocked when you discover this one was actually rated PG. 1978! It’s got Jeff Goldblum and Veronica Cartwright owning a groovy mudbath parlor and that iconic last shot of the very hirsute Donald Sutherland pointing at the camera, making THAT SOUND. Dammit, I’m gonna go on a limb and say this is a remake that’s better than the original. 4) 12 Monkeys , Terry Gilliam, 1995 A riff on Chris Marker’s miraculous short film of still images, La Jetee , this fatalistic time-travel tale is bursting with visual creativity but stays on course as a gripping, propulsive doomsday race. Bruce Willis lets his tough guy guard down a bit and no matter how many times I see this it, the ending always gets to me. By Gilliam standards, it’s his least weird movie; by Hollywood standards, a real standout. 3) Battlestar Galactica , Michael Rymer, 2003 Wait, who said anything about including TV? Well, when the material is this good you make special considerations. Besides, the 1978 BSG did have a theatrical release, and the miniseries that aired on 2003 ranked with the best entertainment that came out that year. (The fact that the original played in theaters then went to TV, as opposed to a TV show that went to the movies, is the reason that Star Trek isn’t on this list. In my mind, it makes sense.) This whacked-out Mormon parable (some say) was the perfect science fiction treatment for the onset of Bush’s War on Terror. There has probably never been a more paranoid show on television and its interplanetary setting oftentimes led to a more constructive forum in which to discuss the issues of the day. Our heroes’ attitudes swung left and right, but loyalty never wavered. I swear to you I’d still take a bullet for Edward James Olmos if the old man needed me. If you’ve been putting it off (or were scared away by some naysayers who didn’t like the conclusion), check out the 2003 miniseries. Then take the week off as you blaze through the rest of the seasons. 2. The Thing , John Carpenter, 1982 I’ve seen The Thing at least ten times. And every time, during the blood testing sequence, I jump. If John Carpenter bills himself as The Horror Master, I think we can safely call this his masterpiece. Some forget it is a remake of Howard Hawks’ The Thing From Another World , a fine film, but Carpenter’s version is a bubbling cauldron of great tough guy characters and outstanding set pieces that’ll have you cheering and puking at the same time. 1. The Fly , David Cronenberg, 1986 It was close, but this one squeezes ahead just a little bit. It’s Goldblum that makes it, really – the way he calmly remarks “That’s disgusting” as he discovers his new way of eating sugar. (If you haven’t seen it, words won’t do justice.) And the fact that he can sell lines like “Drink deep, or taste not, the plasma spring!” Apart from its nifty high concept and groundbreaking special effects, The Fly is a true transcendent work in the way it treats its characters. Who’d have ever expected you’d be crying at the end of what looked like just another gross-out? Certainly no one who’d only seen the ’58 version with Vincent Price. — So there are our ten. If we’ve done our job, we’ve pissed you off. Feel free to let us have it in the space below. Just go easy on The Wiz , is all I ask. Follow Jordan Hoffman on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .
Dear Bossip , I’ve been in a relationship with my fiancé for 2 years now and I am absolutely miserable! I’ve known him for almost 20 years and always knew him to be such a sweet guy. I actually thought I was too wild for him. After we reconnected, he pursued me heavily and promised me he would be the man I’ve been searching for all this time. We dated for 8 months in a long distance relationship, but we saw each other at least twice a month and talked every day. He eventually moved to the city I live in because he could easily find a job here in his line of work, and my daughter is in high school. We agreed to split the bills 50/50, as we kept our own separate bank accounts. I have YET to receive half of the bill money from him because he ALWAYS says he doesn’t have money. He’s got to go visit his mother, buy a TV for his mother, put up a ceiling fan for his mother…the list goes on and on. AND, keep in mind, his mother lives in another state! He gets upset with me for not wanting to go with him every time he goes to visit her, but I talk to her on the phone every week and listen to him talk about her every day. He has no problem with me paying for every meal, paying all the bills and keeping the gas tank full. I’m just so embarrassed to go anywhere because he NEVER offers to pick up the tab. He always tells me that he doesn’t have any money, but he buys clothes every other week. I arch my own eyebrows, do my own hair, and don’t shop for myself basically because between paying all the bills and taking care of the household needs and kids, there’s not a lot left. He seems to be fine with the idea that I do nothing for myself. When he proposed to me, he told me that he had his finances in order and that we were going to be able to save and have the things we had talked about having for our future. None of the things he promised have taken place yet and I’m just miserable living with this man who puts everything before me or our relationship. The five kids he has doesn’t even cause problems because he’s even stingy with them, not wanting to take them anywhere when they come visit because he says he doesn’t have the money. I just don’t like the man he is and can’t believe that after 20 years, this is who he is! Please help…….. Sick AND Tired Dear Ms. Sick AND Tired , Welp, I don’t know what you’re complaining for. It’s two years in and you haven’t done anything about it, and he continues to live off you and your income. He continues to spend on his mother, and save his money, yet, the lie, yes THE LIE he told you that you were going to split the bills 50/50 meant that you would continue to pay the bills at your house, and he’d pay the bills at his momma house. But, err, uhm, a man who is running up behind his momma all the damn time, and spending more time with her than his woman, well, you can forget about him ever being solely yours and completely with you. He belongs to his momma, and you only inherited a boy. You are his second momma. You’re basically taking care of him. Think about it: You feed him. You clean up behind him. You take care of him. You nurture him. You scold him. You baby him. You treat him just like he wants to be treated, and he’ll never be a man because you and his momma continue to treat him like he’s some freaking little a** boy! He’s not going to change, and he’s not going to ever be a man because he will always have his momma, and he will always find a woman who will be his second momma. And, if you’re sick and tired, then the next time he has to rush home to his momma and fix something, or give her something, then you tell him, “You stay your a** with your momma. You go live with her. You let her continue to take care of you. It’s obvious she’s your woman. So, go be with your woman!” And, you pack all his –ish, ship it to him, and change your number and the locks on your door. Why do you keep putting up with this grown little boy who can’t even take care of you and the household? Honey, when you realized that he wasn’t taking care of his five children that should have set off the bells in your head. His own kids won’t even ask him for anything because he doesn’t spend anything on them. SMDH! That’s sad. But, I want to know when he promised you that he would be the man you’d been searching for, what man exactly was he referring to? Did he give you an outlined description? Did he break it down and tell you instead of showing you? Yes, that’s right, he didn’t show you, he told you what you wanted to hear. As Drake so eloquently rapped, “You hate the fact that you bought the dream that they sold you.” No man should be living off his woman and he got a job. No man who promises to marry you and make a family with you should not be in a position whereas he can’t take care of his family. And, no man should be putting his momma before his soon-to-be wife, or his wife. People will tell you what you want to hear, especially if they can see desperation, desire, and a yearning in your eyes, and in your voice. He heard the tiredness in your voice of looking for a man. He saw the loneliness in your eyes. And, he knew exactly what bull-ish lines to feed your hungry a**. Instead of listening to what he was telling you, you should have told that bum bish to show you! So, chalk it up as a lesson learned and move on. Get out of this relationship immediately because once you’re married it will only get worse. Nothing is going to change. He is only going to mooch off of you and take from you until the wheels fall off. Get that trifling bum off your wagon and go get your hair and nails done. Go shopping and buy yourself a new wardrobe. The hell you look like paying all the bills, taking him to dinner, and supporting his grown a** and he got a damn job. I wish I might. My name is Ivanna, I am 15 years old and I live in Veracruz, Mexico. I was the OLLG in Mexico City on June 11th 2012. I began to love Justin from when he first came to Mexico. My friends talked so much about him that I ended up falling in love. I joined in on Justin Bieber pages, and watched Kidrauhl. I wanted to know everything there was to know about him. In October 2011, I opened my Twitter account obviously to follow and support him. My friends and I have cried many times over him because we knew we would never meet him. Many people told me that and it made me feel very sad. The days passed until it was June when I heard that Justin was coming to my country! I told my mom and was really excited. I got good grades and I behaved very well, that was how I got permission from my family to go. I had commitments the weekend, so I could not go with my friends because they were going early. I had no one to go with and I thought I wouldn’t be able to attend all together. My grandmother offered to take me! On Saturday I left my city to go to Mexico City. I arrived on Sunday morning and I went straight to the Zocalo, where the concert was taking place. I was introduced to the girls who were sleeping there to be in front rows. I slept there on Sunday (we had to wake up at 5 am). I was very cold and the worst thing is that I was wearing wearing shorts! I didn’t cared, I just wanted to see my dear Justin. The day of the concert of the concert June 11, we got up at 5 am. The police asked us not to run into the venue. I did end up running and thank God, I was in the front row. I was standing 18 hours without eating, we could only drink water bags, and unable to go to the bathroom. If you went out you could not re-enter the same place. Time passed until he came on stage! I could not believe it was my idol! We watched him sing 3 songs, “Baby,” “As long as you love me,” and when he was singing “U Smile,” I saw Alfredo and Allison! She approached me, took my hand and asked me the one dream every belieber has, “Do you want to be One Less Lonely Girl?” I said yes, while Alfredo was recording me. He asked me my name, and then Ryan appeared suddenly. I could not believe it, he dried my tears with a black towel. I was sitting on a white chair near the stage. Scrappy said it was time to leave, and the blonde dancer girl took me to the stage. I sat in the chair and then it was the moment. It was Justin! He approached me, touched my face, dried my tears, gave me the bouquet of roses, (while still doing the choreography), then returned to me, we hugged and I said to him, “TE AMO,” He said, “TE AMO,” and it was the most beautiful, magical moment. After the song ended, I went behind the scenes with team. I wept so much, and Alfredo laughed at me. Allison took me to Scooter, he took my hand and said, “hanks for being a Belieber.” I hugged him and he took me to where I could see Justin singing behind the stage, I cried even more . When I looked to my right, I saw Kenny! He hugged me and I cried very much. He wanted to speak Spanish, but could not. I helped him, and hugged me. After I got off the stage to my place, I watched the rest of the concert and I still could not believe it. I returned to the hotel with my dreams made. I want to tell all Beliebers that things happen when you least expect it, never give up, always have faith and think positive. That is what I did, and always remember: Never Say Never! -@IvannaMorales2 Continue reading here: My name is Ivanna, I am 15 years old and I live in Veracruz,…

The second I heard that Justin was coming to Sydney for his Believe Promo Tour , I began to freak out. Justin rarely comes here, and I knew I had to utilize this incredible opportunity. There were many competitions to win tickets to see Justin perform live – but unfortunately, I didn’t win any, despite entering daily for all of them. I began to DM and tweet the member’s of Justin’s crew on Twitter, asking if they could help me in any way. And, unbelievably, I got a response from one of them. He DM’d me “I can get you tickets to Justin’s show in Sydney.” I immediately began to cry, and I phoned my best friend in shock to tell her the exciting news. I couldn’t believe that I actually had tickets to see Justin perform live for the first time. The day finally arrived, and my friends and I spent the entire morning stalking Justin ALL over Sydney, but unfortunately, with no luck. But we didn’t mind too much – we were going to be seeing Justin perform that night, and we met so many lovely beliebers! In the late afternoon, we went to the meeting point and boarded the buses, which took us to the secret location where Justin would perform. We finally arrived, and walked across a red carpet, inside the venue. My friends and I ran to the very front of the area and we managed to get standing spots at the very front of the pit! After a reasonable wait, Justin came on stage. I couldn’t believe how flawless he looked in person, and when he began to sing, I was so overwhelmed to be hearing Justin’s incredible voice, in person. I took videos and photos of Justin performing, and during “Die In Your Arms,” I yelled out “I’LL DIE IN YOUR ARMS” and Justin looked in my direction, and gave me a huge grin (I caught it on video). In the middle of his performance, I saw Alfredo Flores, and I managed to catch his attention. My friends and I gave him our gift for Justin – a cowbell. Alfredo laughed, and put it in his bag, promising that he would give it to Justin. Later on, he tweeted me that Justin had it, and he had been playing with it all night. And after that – Dan Kanter threw his guitar pick into the crowd, and I caught it! After Justin’s INCREDIBLE acoustic performance, my friends and I rushed to the side of the hall, and found Scrappy and Moshe, whom we got photos with. We also found Kenny, and had a short conversation with him. Two of my friends had meet and greets to see Justin and I accidently called one of them during the session. And, just my luck, she handed the phone to Justin, who said to me “Hey Abi, how are you?” I started to freak out, I recognized the voice but I didn’t understand HOW it could actually be Justin… I put the phone on loudspeaker so my friends could hear, and he told me, “Yes, this is Justin Bieber…” and shortly after, we hung up. It was incredible. Justin Bieber said my name and I managed to speak to him, even though it was brief. It was an incredible night – the best night of my life infact, and I am so thankful that I got to finally see my idol perform live. I hope that one day I will be able to meet him, and tell him just how much he means to me. -@KidrauhlYolo Excerpt from: The second I heard that Justin was coming to Sydney for his…
