Join Movieline Today at Comic-Con’s Girls Gone Genre Panel

Women are an undeniable force in pop entertainment, both in the audience and behind the scenes, as the annual GIRLS GONE GENRE panel at Comic-Con attests. So what is the state of storytelling for women creatives working (and, frankly, kicking ass ) today? Why is the genre world such fertile ground for female storytellers and strong, complex female characters? Join me as I moderate a panel of all-stars from TV and film — Marti Noxon ( Buffy , Angel , Fright Night ), Jane Espenson ( Battlestar Galactica , Torchwood ), Deborah Ann Woll ( True Blood ), Angela Robinson ( True Blood, D.E.B.S. ) and Gale Anne Hurd ( The Walking Dead , The Terminator ) — today at Comic-Con. Details after the jump! Genre entertainment has historically been a man’s world on and off-screen, but these writers, directors, producers, showrunners, and performers have established themselves by bringing compelling characters and stories to audiences hungry for good storytelling, no matter their gender. From Sarah Connor to Buffy Summers to Starbuck and beyond, our panelists have helped shape some of the strongest female screen icons and the most compelling TV and film properties of the past few decades, and I couldn’t be more honored or excited to be a part of this conversation. If you’re at Comic-Con, join us today from 6:00pm to 7:00pm in Room 7AB in the San Diego Convention Center, and stay tuned for a recap of our discussion… Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . WATCH: The Dark Knight Rises Teases 13 Minute Behind the Scenes Featurette

The first reviews of The Dark Knight Rises won’t hit for at least another week, but Warner Bros. keeps putting out tantalizing looks at the Chris Nolan-directed trilogy-ender. If you’re one of the legions of Bat-curious fans out there hungry for new peeks at the superhero finale, you’ll find a host of new images and behind-the-scenes footage in a newly released 13-minute featurette for The Dark Knight Rises . Go ahead, treat yo’ self. Nolan, producers Chuck Roven and Emma Thomas, and stars Christian Bale , Anne Hathaway , and Tom Hardy among others pop up in the featurette to add their observations from the set (many nuggets of which made their way into the 50-page production notes recently unveiled online). In the clip, Nolan calls TDKR a story of “the elemental conflict between good and evil,” before the piece goes on to explore the moral battle lines drawn in the flick and where each of its characters stand. Among the more interesting tidbits: Nolan’s description of his superhero pic as his way of harkening back to the silent film era and the epic scale filmmaking of olde: massive sets, armies of extras, spectacle cinema at its burliest. Watch as Nolan gives direction thousands of feet in the air to four stunt men dangling from a piece of airborne fuselage, or builds a fake football field on top of Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field for that impressive destruction sequence, or orchestrates a full-on Wall Street brawl, and you see the kind of experience he’s talking about. The Dark Knight Rises rises on July 20.

Scarlett Johansson Awaits Big Avengers 2 Payday

Well, it’s certainly great to be cast in a hit franchise that producers are itching to see the good times roll on. Scarlett Johansson ‘s portrayal as the Black Widow in Marvel’s The Avengers was one component in a half-dozen super-heroes that has brought in over $1.45 billion since its release in late Spring. With money like that rolling in, no point in jiggering with a winning formula. And to keep the good times going, the producers have offered up a record-breaking paycheck for Johansson to reprise her super-hero role. The Hollywood star has been offered a cool $20 million in order to lure her back in the skin-tight black suit for more flips, punches and acrobatics for future adoring audiences in the franchise’s next installment, according to the New York Post . That is “slightly” more than the $19 million Angelina Jolie reportedly received for her turn in The Tourist If that pans out, that will be quite a pay raise from the current film, which is the biggest of the summer tentpoles so far. According to The Hollywood Reporter in May she made between $4 – 6 million plus bonuses, similar to Samuel L. Jackson, but much less than Robert Downey, Jr.’s reported take (Chris Hemsworth, Chis Evans, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo made about half that). Last month, Forbes magazine dubbed Kristen Stewart the highest paid actress in Hollywood between her Twilight and Snow White and the Huntsman gigs. The two made her a celestial $34.5 million between May 2011 and May 2012. If Johansson accepts the twenty mill. and adds in another pic for good measure, she could well be on her way in topping Stewart. [Source: NY Post via The Huffington Post ]

WATCH: Judd Nelson Sends Up The Breakfast Club in Bad Kids Go To Hell

School principal Judd Nelson sees his bratty charges as he wants to see them… in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. Because they’re all cliches in the Breakfast Club genre-spoof Bad Kids Go to Hell , an indie film adaptation of Matthew Spradlin’s comic book/graphic novel. Watch the trailer for the horror comedy, which debuts at Comic-Con, after the jump, and decide if this kind of fast-talking self-awareness still seems fresh in a post- Detention world. That’s the biggest obstacle facing Bad Kids Go To Hell , if you ask me: Joseph Kahn has already traversed this ground, and with an unapologetically hopped-up, take no prisoners visual style and razor wit, in spring’s indie horror satire Detention . Like that film (which starred The Hunger Games ‘ Josh Hutcherson ), Bad Kids Go To Hell seems to take ’80s teen movies like The Breakfast Club and spins its tropes around in various post-modern ways, dropping pop culture references galore. Unlike Detention , however, Bad Kids seems pedestrian in comparison – but then almost any iteration of a teen movie spoof would seem that way, juxtaposed with Kahn’s ADD speed freak-out of a genre romp. Behold, the Bad Kids synopsis: Six private school high school kids find themselves stuck in detention on a frightfully dark and stormy Saturday afternoon. During their 8 hour incarceration, each of the six kids falls victim to a horrible “accident” until only one of them remains. And as each of these spoiled rich kids bites the dust, the story takes on a series of humorous and frantic twists and turns. Is one of the kids secretly evening the school’s social playing field? Or have the ghosts of prestigious Crestview Academy finally come to punish the school’s worst (and seemingly untouchable) brats? One thing is for sure…Daddy’s money can’t save them now. Bad Kids Go To Hell will have its North American premiere at Comic-Con this Friday, July 13th.

In Defensive White Folks News: Justin Bieber Hangs Up On Radio Jock Who Compares Him To Justin Timberlake And Makes Comments About His Mom Getting Chopped Down!

Don’t beef with the Biebs! Justin Bieber Hangs Up On Disrespectful Radio DJ Mid-Interview Justin Bieber recently graduated high school, but the 18-year-old still has a lot of growing up to do. In a recent interview with a morning radio show, “Mojo in the Morning,” Justin Bieber quickly became agitated when radio host Mojo commented on his similarities with former popstar Justin Timberlake. “I hope you take this as a compliment,” said Mojo. “When I first got played the song by your record people, and this was months and months before it came out, they said ‘Take a listen to this and tell me if you can tell me who this is.’ I thought it was Justin Timberlake.” “When I heard ‘Boyfriend’ for the very first time,” he continued. “I thought it was Justin Timberlake’s single.” Unfortunately, Bieber didn’t take it as a compliment. “Man, that’s crazy because our voices sound nothing alike,” he said. “I mean, I’m not trying to sound like anyone. Saying I sound like someone else is not really a compliment. … I think if you were to say ‘I heard some Justin Timberlake-esque things in your sound,’ I would take that as a compliment.” Problem is, Justin has said NUMEROUS times that he takes such comments as compliments. That represents change in Bieber’s message. The singer admitted in May that he was “definitely” influenced by Timberlake on “Boyfriend.” “[Timberlake] was young, and he did it, and he was really amazing and had such amazing music,” Bieber told MTV’s Sway Calloway. “I can’t say that I would be upset when someone compares me to him.” That was a lil’ touchy, but this next part is just downright fawking awkward. While Bieber has some conflicting opinions about his relationship with Justin Timberlake’s sound, that’s nothing compared to the reaction he had when Mojo decided to bring up Bieber’s mother. Asked if he was afraid One Direction’s Harry Styles might end up seducing his mother, given his penchant for older women, Bieber went on the offensive. “I mean, definitely somewhat [I am friends with One Direction now]. They were in town a while ago and they came over and stuff, but, yeah, they’re good kids,” he said when asked about his friendship with the Brit boy banders, before adding, “I don’t think you should worry about me [and my mom with Harry Styles] — Worry about your mom, bro.” Mojo then noted that his mother had passed away, before Bieber hung up on the call. Do you feel like Justin overreacted to the DJ’s line of questioning?? HuffPost Check out the interview for yourself after the flipper. Image via YouTube/WENN
