Oliver Stone Talks Savages, Pot and Vietnam: Drug Made Soldiers ‘More Conscious of the Value of Life’

Oliver Stone is certainly not afraid to court controversy. The two-time Oscar winner raised eyebrows with a sympathetic portrayal of Fidel Castro in his 2003 documentary Comandante , a less than sympathetic look at former President George W. Bush in W. and a positive chronicle of Latin America’s left-leaning presidents in 2009’s South of the Border and he’s long been outspoken on issues that win praise from the hard left and venom from the right. On the eve of his latest star-driven bigger budget release, Savages , Stone graced the cover of High Times magazine and over the weekend spoke of his own drug use, how it helped him through Vietnam as a twice-wounded soldier, and about his new movie opening Friday. In an interview with CBS This Morning Stone spoke sympathetically toward marijuana, which is at the center of his latest feature, and which he used while doing two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. “When I was in Vietnam, [pot] made the difference between being human and being a beast,” he said. “There were a lot of guys who were drinking and doing a lot of the killing that was so unnecessary and raping. The guys who did dope were much more conscious of the value of life.” Stone said he had served well, was a “good soldier” and added, “I wasn’t a slouch.” His latest crime-thriller is based on a novel of the same name by Don Winslow. Starring Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, Blake Lively, Salma Hayek, Benicio del Toro and John Travolta, the story revolves around two California marijuana growers who share a girlfriend who is kidnapped. The pair (Johnson and Kitsch) are then faced with confronting a Mexican drug cartel lead by Elena Sanchez (Hayek) and Miguel (del Toro) to rescue her. “I like power [stories], I like people who do the cat and mouse game,” Stone said. “You never get what you expect and that’s like life.” In order to prep for the film, Stone headed south of the border to get a proper feel for some real-life figures in the drug underworld. “Benicio and I hung out with some pretty heavy people on the other side of the border,” he said. “Don Winslow knows that world because he’s written other books about the subject.” Stone noted that “thank God” the cartels have so far had a limited role in cannabis growing in California since it’s still a comparatively small business vs. their much bigger and violent operations, but added: “Like California wine, the stuff being grown there is very high in its potency.” [Source: CBS This Morning ]

Trailer for RZA’s Man With the Iron Fists: Everybody Is Kung Fu Fighting

It looks like Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA has learned well from his masters — they being the Hong Kong grindhouse filmmakers of yesteryear whose slicing, dicing martial arts exports clearly influenced more than just the rapper-actor’s musical side, not to mention the reigning icon of modern exploitation cinema culture, Quentin Tarantino . Watch Russell Crowe , Lucy Liu , Pam Grier , Jamie Chung , and RZA himself chop, stab, kick, and fight their way through the bloody first redband trailer for The Man with the Iron Fists ! RZA stars in the film as the eponymous man with the iron fists, a small-town blacksmith in feudal China (the kind of fantasy “feudal China” where RZA can play a local and everyone speaks English) who jumps into action in defense of his village, though the trailer smartly glosses over anything resembling a plot and cuts right to the selling point: This cast, equipped with a plethora of weapons, fighting each other as if in a gloriously lush contemporary Shaw Brothers flick. In addition to earning a “Presented by Quentin Tarantino” credit, RZA’s kung fu actioner is co-written by Eli Roth, who also produced. But QT and Roth aren’t the only veterans RZA surrounded himself with for his feature directing debut: He’s got Corey Yuen onboard as fight choreographer and Chi Ying Chan ( Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame ) as DP, along with a host of supporting cast members plucked from the worlds of action and Chinese film, including Dave Bautista, Cung Le, Daniel Wu, Rick Yune, and Gordon Liu. CG blood squibs too-frequently come off as a silly workaround, so it’ll remain to be seen just how these fight sequences play within the film. But the glimpses we see here promise inventive framing and action choreography, not to mention some painful-looking bladed weapons and a studied eye for the genre. Verdict: Where can I sign up for Lucy Liu’s school of killing for girls?? O-Ren Ishii lives on! Synopsis: Quentin Tarantino presents The Man With the Iron Fists, an action-adventure inspired by kung-fu classics as interpreted by his longtime collaborators RZA and Eli Roth. Making his debut as a big-screen director and leading man, RZA—alongside a stellar international cast led by Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu—tells the epic story of warriors, assassins and a lone outsider hero in nineteenth-century China who must unite to destroy the clan traitor who would destroy them all. Since his arrival in China’s Jungle Village, the town’s blacksmith (RZA) has been forced by radical tribal factions to create elaborate tools of destruction. When the clans’ brewing war boils over, the stranger channels an ancient energy to transform himself into a human weapon. As he fights alongside iconic heroes and against soulless villains, one man must harness this power to become savior of his adopted people. Blending astonishing martial-arts sequences from some of the masters of this world with the signature vision he brings as the leader of the Wu-Tang Clan and as one of hip-hop’s most dominant figures of the past two decades, RZA embarks upon his most ambitious, stylized and thrilling project to date. On top of this, we’ve got the first few images from the film. This one’s quite eye-popping, indeed. Oh, and have you seen the poster for Man with the Iron Fists ? I can’t not get excited about this. Did Jennifer Lawrence and Miley Cyrus Hook Up on the Set of The Hunger Games?

Please be true please be true please be true please be true… This “blind item” has been furiously flying around the ‘net as it seems to point to a lesbian fling between The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence and Miley Cyrus : “These two young stars costarred in one of the biggest movies of the year and everyone speculated that they had an affair. But that’s only half right. The female lead DID have an on set fling – but not with her costar – with her costar’s GIRLFRIEND when she came to visit! Ironically, the girlfriend is also a major star but she wouldn’t let her hunky boyfriend join in the fun. Both women are bisexual and he’s straight.” Being a blind item and all, there’s a very real possibility that this is bullshit. But c’mon, think about it- what was a big movie this year that featured up-and-coming young stars? The Hunger Games . Who’s dating Jennifer Lawrence’ s co-star Liam Hemsworth ? Why, that would be Miley Cyrus . IT’S ALL SO PERFECT! And come to think of it, who cares if it’s true? It’s excellent meat-beating fodder either way. Unless, of course, they made a sex tape… See sexy celebs exploring their Sapphic sides with our Steamy Lesbian Scenes playlist right here at MrSkin.com!

Nora Ephron Didn’t Feel Limited By Romantic Comedies

‘I’m not complaining about any box that I’m in, because I can write whatever I want,’ late writer/director tells MTV News in 2009. By Kara Warner with reporting by Josh Horowitz Nora Ephron in 2009 Photo: No matter how it happens, when or where, it is always sad to hear of the passing of a celebrated, talented and respected public figure like Academy Award-nominated screenwriter, director and playwright Nora Ephron, who died of pneumonia at age 71 on Tuesday (June 26). Ephron is best known for writing and/or directing some of Hollywood’s most famous and successful romantic comedies like “When Harry Met Sally … ,” “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail.” Her final film as writer and director was 2009’s “Julie & Julia,” and during the promotion for that film, which starred Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, Ephron revealed to MTV News that although she was happy to be known for her romantic comedies, she also dabbled in a few politically charged subjects that had yet to be made into feature films. “You should see my closet, it’s full of political scripts,” Ephron revealed, adding that while she’d love to see one of her many political scripts turned into a film, she wasn’t holding out hope that Hollywood would let her take a turn from romantic comedies to political dramedies. “Forget it,” Ephron said of wanting to direct one of her political scripts. “I mean yes, but the [movies] you get made are not necessarily all the things you write.” When asked if she felt at all limited by being most well-known for her expertise in the rom-com genre, Ephron said she felt nothing but gratitude for how much her successful romantic comedies have done in providing her with the freedom to explore other unrelated subjects. “I’m not complaining about any box that I’m in, because I can write whatever I want,” Ephron said with sincerity. “Fortunately, I’m not just in the movie business, so I don’t feel that the only way I can express myself is by the movies I make.” Share your condolences for Ephron’s family and friends in the comments below. B.o.B, Taylor Swift Salute Everyman In ‘Both Of Us’ Video

Pair examine everyday life in Nashville in new Jake Nava-directed video. By Jocelyn Vena B.o.B in his video for “Both of Us” Photo: If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if B.o.B and Taylor Swift hung out together in Nashville and hired video director Jake Nava to film it, well, wonder no more. The twosome are committing their song collaboration to celluloid in the just-released clip for the rapper’s track “Both of Us,” which features the country-pop superstar on the hook. But if you thought the video would pay homage to the glittering honky-tonks of Nashville, think again. This video instead sheds light on the grittier sides of the country music capital, following the lyrics of the track, which center on adversity and strife. Bobby Ray and Taylor are rarely seen in the same shot, as southern Americana is the twosome’s most prominent co-star. The clip opens with B.o.B hanging out in his modest home, while Swift is chilling out in the most un-Taylor Swift spot in music video history, a pool hall. There are shots of tatted locals, cowboy-boot-wearing young women, shirtless youths playing in sprinklers, teens kissing, a mobile home, and a dog that leaves Taylor awestruck with his high-flying antics. The video isn’t glamorous, but it leaves viewers appreciating the little things in life. It’s not about money, it’s about understanding that sometimes a romp through a sprinkler or a good game of billiards is enough to take you away from the mundane moments of everyday life. As the video closes out, viewers are left with a sort of fantasy, with B.o.B and Swift re-imagined as the everyman and everywoman living simple lives in rural Tennessee, much like the folks in the video. It’s like B.o.B says in the song: “Hey, but if it’s all for one and one for all/ Then maybe one day we all could ball/ Do it one time for the underdogs/ From Bobby Ray to all of y’all.” Swift shares in the sentiment when she answers on the chorus, “I wish I was strong enough to lift not one but both of us/ Someday I will be strong enough to lift not one but both of us.” The track is off B.o.B’s album Strange Clouds . Swift and the MC shot the clip in Music City, USA in mid-June, weeks prior to the official release. Related Photos Taylor Swift And B.o.B On The Set Of Their ‘Both Of Us’ Video

Hi, I’m Julia. I was lucky enough to meet Justin this past…

Hi, I’m Julia. I was lucky enough to meet Justin this past Decemeber while he was in Toronto for his Christmas show. Here’s my second encounter with Justin, and best one yet. My friends and I decided to get a hotel for MMVA weekend and were hoping to meet Justin when he arrived. Unfortunately, Friday night I was working when he flew in. Some people I knew from high school had the chance to meet him around the city , like at Pizza Pizza. They were so lucky! On Saturday, my friends and I had already planned to go out to a club DJ Tay James was hosting. We got on the guestlist once it was announced, not thinking of anything other than having a good time. Saturday was a night to remember. Not only did Tay DJ, but the crew, Jeremy, as well as Justin AND Selena came. I freaked out when I saw them. When “All Around The World” came on, EVERYONE went crazy. Selena got up off the couch and started to sing and dance with Justin. They were there for at least half an hour and then left. We didn’t think this night could get any better. Since it also happened to be Alfredo’s birthday, it was an awesome time and we all hung out for a while. Finally, the day of MMVA’s came. Earlier in the day we waited outside his hotel but didn’t even get one glimpse of him. There was way too many fans, paparazzi and he must have been in his hotel room doing radio, press, and rehearsals. This was really sad for all of us. We just wanted to at least see him somewhere. After waiting so long, we decided to go to the red carpet car line up to see Justin . We thought he would roll down the window to say hi since it was only 6 of us, but I don’t think he wanted to ruin the surprise for the red carpet of having Jazzy and Jaxon with him and Selena. All of us were quite disappointed because almost all of the weekend we just wanted to just see him. Finally, Monday morning came and we knew Justin would be going to NYC for his show. We had less than 5 hours asleep and got ready for 9 a.m. to go wait outside of his hotel. At around 10 a.m. there was a lot of commotion. We saw Moshe come back from Starbucks with Bruce and an extra drink. I wonder who it was for? He brought it into the hotel and then came back outside to see two fans who wanted pictures with him. About 10 fans were there and we kept seeing Moshe, Bruce (Justin’s grandfather) and Kenny. We saw luggage being put into a black suburban so we figured it would be Justin’s car. About 10 more fans came around 11 a.m. My friends and I were getting nervous because 20 people is quite a crowd. Luckily, minutes after 11am, Justin and Selena’s car pulled up. Selena went into the car right away and we thought Justin was too… We look again, and Justin handed his bag over to Moshe to put in the car and said, “I’m coming to take pictures!” He greeted ALL of us. He took time with each and every fan making sure they got a good picture and was so sweet. My friend Nicole and I told him that we were having a buyout that upcoming Saturday (@Toronto_Buyout), along with our friend Vanessa (@vanessaalove who was sadly at work). He perked up when he heard that and said, “A  buyout?! BUYOUTS are awesome!” I got my picture with Justin and he wasn’t rushing me or anyone. He just took his time and was SO polite. None of us were freaking out. We were all calm and took our turns, which probably made this a whole lot easier! I took pictures for about 8 other fans after me on their cameras and on mine to send to them. Justin and I kept making eye contact and now everything feels like such a blur. I keep asking myself, “Did that morning really happen?!” After I got my picture with Justin, I took one with Kenny! They were about to go to the airport to fly out to NYC. I’m honestly so thankful this happened. It was just perfect. Justin, if you see this, THANK YOU so much for taking the time to take pictures and talk to us. It made my day and this whole weekend was SO worth it. I LOVE YOU.  -@juliaaa_xo Original post: Hi, I’m Julia. I was lucky enough to meet Justin this past…

‘Hunger Games’ Star Jennifer Lawrence: Real-Life Hero

Actress rushes to help a young woman lying in her lawn Monday. By Audrey Cook Jennifer Lawrence Assisting A Fainting Woman Outside Her L.A. Apartment Complex Photo: Jennifer Lawrence doesn’t just rush to action on the big screen. The “Hunger Games” starlet was walking her dog outside her L.A. apartment complex Monday when she stumbled upon a young woman lying on her back on the lawn. According to X17 , Lawrence raced over to help the young woman while someone nearby called the paramedics. A photographer on the scene told the photo agency, “Jennifer ran outside her apartment when she heard a girl scream and immediately called 911. When the EMT arrived, she stayed to make sure everything was OK. She was really scared for the girl.” The Santa Monica Police Department told TMZ , “The young lady who collapsed was a juvenile and was part of a group that was together,” adding that “alcohol may have played a role in the incident.” Lawrence, sporting a casual look in gray sweatpants and a black tank top, got on the ground to assist the woman and stayed by her side until paramedics arrived. It’s unclear why the woman was in front of Lawrence’s property, but paramedics treated the unidentified woman on the scene, and she was then cleared to leave. Lawrence isn’t the only celebrity who has played superhero recently: Patrick Dempsey came to the rescue a little less than two months ago, saving a teenager who crashed his car outside the “Grey’s Anatomy” star’s house. Lawrence is gearing up to reprise her role as Katniss Everdeen in the “Hunger Games” sequel “Catching Fire,” slated to hit theaters in November 2013. Would you rush outside to help an injured stranger if you found them on your property? Share your thoughts!

Tito Lopez Challenges Rap Competitors To His Own Hunger Game

‘I spit and I spit for real, so I wanted to bring that hunger aspect to it and that feeling like I gotta be #1,’ MC says of The Hunger Game. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Lacsina Tito Lopez Photo: Main Pick Headliner : Tito Lopez Representing : Gulfport, Mississippi Mixtape : The Hunger Game Real Spit : Tito Lopez sure is confident; then again, if you could rap tightly packed bars like the Gulfport, Mississippi, MC, you would be too. On his latest mixtape, The Hunger Game, Tito puts all of his skill and confidence on full display. “I named my mixtape The Hunger Game basically because if anybody knows me, they know I love movies,” Tito told Mixtape Daily. Lopez found a parallel in “The Hunger Games” film and the rap game where he hopes to one day be crowned a king. “If you never seen that movie these kids have to fight to the death, they’re kids and it’s really kind of messed up. They gotta fight ’till it’s one winner and I feel like that’s the competition aspect that’s missing out of rap,” he said. On “Try Me,” Tito invites all would-be detractors to the battlefield. “Feast on beats and pick my teeth, if you want some bitch come find me/ I’ll make it hard for you to stand as a man, let alone stand by me, come try me,” he spits to end his first verse. Tito is currently a rap underdog, even though his talent has earned him a deal with Capitol Records. On “Mass Appeal 2.0” he proves his worth lyrically over a re-worked Gang Starr instrumental and then rhymes over another DJ Premier beat with his “Devil’s Pie” freestyle. Both are winners. With “Jessica,” Tito shows that it isn’t all slick metaphors and battle raps, as he weaves an intricate story rhyme about a high-school crush. His current single “Mama Proud” shows even more range; it’s a heartfelt tune dedicated to his come-up in the game. After listening to tracks like “Black Ice Freestyle,” “They Told Me” and “Ventilation,” it becomes increasingly difficult to deny Tito his place in the game. “I spit and I spit for real, so I wanted to bring that hunger aspect to it and that feeling like I gotta be #1,” he said. “If I gotta knock cats out to be that, I will be that.” Joints to Check For > > “They Told Me”— “It’s like a triumphant type joint. I’ve made that just to basically let people know I’ve come along way.” > > “Jessica” — “This is one of my favorite joints period. I tell a story about a girl who she has low self-esteem, she made some bad choices, had a hard life and she don’t have no self-respect or nothin’ like that. Basically during the story, I’m trying to tell her to respect herself more, to make better choices.” Related Artists Tito Lopez
