Mortal Kombat isn’t the most esteemed video game franchise, but its coterie of bloodthirsty fighters is one of the most beloved in gaming history. Sure, the 1995 movie adaptation was a dud, but it was a magnificent dud with a throbbing Jock Jams soundtrack and a provocative cast. (Where have you gone, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras?) Since the 2013 reboot has a chance of reigniting interest in the age-old series, let’s cast our dream players in five of the main roles.
So there’s good news and bad news about Madonna’s W.E. , whose Venice/Toronto festival coming-out parties made more of a splash for the Material Girl’s attitude toward hydrangeas than for being the type of classy, prestigious filmmaking breakthrough its principals had anticipated. Critics, including Movieline’s own Stephanie Zacharek , were cool toward W.E. at best, with some beating it apart like a glossy piñata. That’s the bad news. The good news is that we know what that calls for, especially with Harvey Weinstein at the domestic-distribution reins: Recut!

A flashback version of Jean-Claude Van Damme? Mickey Rourke’s bicep? [ Variety ]

Jennifer Lawrence introduced a suspenseful, heavily forested preview of The Hunger Games before MTV’ s Video Music Awards in a pre-taped segment from North Carolina, where the adaptation of Suzanne Collins’s bestseller is still being shot. And speaking of being shot: In the clip, Lawrence takes aim with a fiery arrow and artfully dodges some woodsy danger. Indeed, she’s the new goddess of the hunt. Watch after the jump.
Before Jennifer Lawrence introduces exclusive glimpse at Sunday’s show, we offer up a sneak peek. By Kara Warner Jennifer Lawrence in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lions Gate All right, “Hunger Games” fans: There are only a few short days until we present the first-ever look at the upcoming film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling dystopian novel. The exclusive glimpse of the film will debut during Sunday’s VMAs , to be introduced by star Jennifer Lawrence. It will also be available exclusively on MTV.com. In an effort to make your wait a little less painful — or more so, depending on how you feel about teaser photos — we are pleased to offer this exclusive still photo from the first look that will debut during the VMAs. The snapshot features heroine Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) captured in a moment of extreme intensity, mid-sprint. Those who know how the plot unfolds in the books might venture to guess that Katniss is in the midst of a fight to the death in the Hunger Games. We hope we’ll see more of this when the footage debuts Sunday night. Until then, take a look back at the photos we’ve seen so far of Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth in action, as well as what Lawrence had to say about the coveted role when we spoke to her about it back in May. “I was a fan of the books before I really knew about the movies,” Lawrence told MTV News , adding that she’d be working her butt off to get into character. “It’s lots of training, but the training’s actually really fun. I’ve done archery for about six weeks and rock climbing, tree climbing — and combat, running and vaulting. But also yoga and things like that, to stay catlike!” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8.
