Katniss and Peeta’s battle against the cruel and cunning Cato beats out ‘Harry Potter’ and more in Sunday night’s most violent category. By Josh Wigler and John Mitchell Alexander Ludwig and Josh Hutcherson win at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Two killers against one — not exactly the fairest of odds, no, but it certainly sets the stage for one of the coolest fights we’ve seen on screen all year long. It’s only fitting, then, that “The Hunger Games” took home Best Fight at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Sunday night (June 3), gifting both Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson with their second Golden Popcorn statuettes of the night, and bad boy Alexander Ludwig with his first. The award was presented by “Prometheus” co-stars Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender, who thought his Irish heritage and famous and much-discussed manliness meant he could handle the duties himself. “I was thinking since I’m Irish, I would just handle this one,” Fassbender rationalized. “Yeah, you know, fighting Irish and all that. And considering you’re a girl and all that.” Unfortunately for Fassbender, Theron wasn’t having it, and decided to show him exactly how tough even the most glamorous girl can be. The poor guy didn’t get past “And the nominees are” before she’d knocked him to the floor with just a handful of swift (mock) blows. For his part, Fassbender played the part of the victim well, writhing on the floor in faux pain before working his way back on his feet. Just as the “Twilight” films have dominated the Best Kiss category over the past several Movie Awards shows, so too is “Hunger Games” poised to own the Best Fight arena in the years to come. After all, these movies are about unwitting contestants battling to the death — every film from “Catching Fire” to the two-part “Mockingjay” will feature scenes of brutal violence, with lead actors Lawrence and Hutcherson often on the front lines of the action. “Wow, this is really cool,” Hutcherson, who also scored the prize for Best Male Performance , told the audience. “I’ve always loved doing stunt work [and] producers have always hated me for that because they’ve never want me to do it.” Hutcherson and Ludwig’s fellow Best Fight winner, Best Female Performance winner Jennifer Lawrence, was unable to make it to the awards because she is in Prague filming “Serena.” “We were filming ’til like six in the morning that night so it was an amazing experience,” Ludwig added before thanking “Hunger Games” fans for all their support. Of course, you won’t see Ludwig in any future “Hunger Games” fights — his character, the cruel and cunning Cato, was the ill-fated loser of the Movie Awards-winning fight. But District 2 supporters, never fear: You’ll get to see the man who plays Cato again very soon when he makes an unlikely “Twilight” crossover with Taylor Lautner in next year’s “Grown Ups 2.” Who knows? Perhaps that mash-up could be eligible for Best Fight in a couple of years! The 2012 MTV Movie Awards are officially under way! From Russell Brand’s improv to Kristen Stewart’s nerves, best behind-the-scenes moments from Sunday’s show. By Eric Ditzian Kristen Stewart wins at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Christian Bale nearly cried. Johnny Depp wailed alongside the Black Keys. Jennifer Lawrence got shot through the head with an arrow. Everyone saw these moments take place at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday night at the Gibson Amphitheatre. But back behind the stage, in the wings and on the patio behind the theater, there was an entirely different event going on. And I was lucky enough to have access to it all, thanks to my so-called “God pass,” the highest-level badge allowing me to come, go and gawk as I pleased. I was there when “Magic Mike” star Joe Manganiello, shirtless and clad in a fireman’s outfit, deposited Elizabeth Banks backstage after carrying her off after her Best On-Screen Transformation lap-dance of an acceptance speech. She was four-alarm-fire excited for the help and announced, “I needed Channing Tatum shirtless for my bit to work. But then this guy saved the day!” It was just that kind of party. Check out six other things you didn’t see at the Movie Awards. Emma Watson Was Bummed The 22-year-old actress may have moved on from the “Harry Potter” franchise that made her a star (and a zillionaire), but the gal never forgets her roots. After handing over the Golden Popcorn for Best Male Performance to “Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson — who beat out “Potter” boy wizard Daniel Radcliffe for the win — Watson nearly crumbled into a handler’s arms backstage. Was she feeling like she’d betrayed the hero of Hogwarts? Was it just kind of awkward? Before I could inquire, her “Perks of Being a Wallflower” co-stars swooped in, bringing a smile to her face, and off they all went to the back patio. Kristen Stewart Was Worried KStew didn’t have any interest in winning Best Kiss for a fourth time in a row, especially considering that co-star Robert Pattinson was off promoting a new film rather than kicking it at the Gibson. But win she did, and once onstage, with no lips to smooch in the grand tradition of Best Kiss winners, Stewart implored co-stars like Charlize Theron and Taylor Lautner to join her and do the deed. Shockingly, no one took her up on the offer. She ended up just pretending to make out with herself. The crowd loved it, but Kristen wasn’t sure. Once backstage, Stewart leaned toward a rep and, with a nervous smile, asked, “How was it? Was it OK?” Russell Brand Likes Little Kids The night’s emcee had a long-standing plan with “Rock of Ages” stars Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta to interrupt a commercial break and promote their upcoming rock musical. But Hough — whose boyfriend, Ryan Seacrest, couldn’t make it to the show — instead brought her elementary-school-aged nephew, leading Brand to come up with a wacky bit of improv. To the folks watching at home, it seemed like it was preplanned for Brand to be kneeling down and asking the little boy to take over his hosting duties, but it all came together in a matter of minutes, thanks to Brand. Wiz Khalifa Feels No Pain Wiz barely made it to the show. Just hours before he was set to perform, the rapper was stuck in Dallas . Show producers were trying their best not to freak out. Not Wiz. He hopped aboard “my own little cloud that I float” on, as he told me on the red carpet, and made it to the show. After the performance, the guy was on a serious high, perhaps partly owing to the pungent cloud surrounding his entourage, but mostly because he rocked the hell out of the crowd. He hopped into the backstage area, a huge smile on his face, and shouted to anyone who wanted to hear, “It felt great! It felt great!” Johnny Depp Wants a Band Backstage, while Depp was shredding with the Black Keys, “Prometheus” stars Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender were boogying their butts off. The cast of “Teen Wolf” was saying that they had to be backstage, and in full view of the musical madness, rather than in their seats. And Depp, he was probably wishing he could do this full-time. As he said after the performance, when multiple people suggested he ditch acting and fully embrace music, he said, “I need a band! I don’t have a band!” Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler didn’t seem to care, telling Depp and the Keys, “You the bomb!” Dark Knight Gets Emotional In perhaps the night’s most unexpected moment, Christian Bale appeared to be on the verge of tears after a montage of “Batman” footage, including shots of Heath Ledger, played during the show. Afterwards, Bale, director Christopher Nolan and co-stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Gary Oldman all embraced one another again and again. This was a special moment, clearly, for them all. Nolan (whose teleprompter, alone among presenters on Sunday, read simply, “Ad lib”) was the focus of all the “Dark Knight Rises” well-wishing. “Thank you,” Bale told him. “Thank you,” Gordon-Levitt echoed. “Thank you.” Jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, gut-busting moments galore. Josh Hutcherson tells MTV News that director Francis Lawrence ‘has his finger on the pulse of the story.’ By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Josh Hutcherson arrives at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Coming off their big night at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , the cast of ” The Hunger Games ,” which took home four buckets of Golden Popcorn, is already planning the next installment of the series, ” The Hunger Games: Catching Fire .” MTV News’ Josh Horowitz caught up with stars Josh Hutcherson and Elizabeth Banks during the awards ceremony to find out where preparations for “Catching Fire” currently stand. Last week came word that the crew may leave behind its North Carolina location from the first film for a shoot further south in Atlanta. Hutcherson told MTV News that he hasn’t heard a definitive word on the location, but he is looking forward to the shoot. “I haven’t heard anything confirmed yet, but Atlanta is a big possibility. I know they’re looking at Hawaii, too, for some of the tropic stuff when we’re in the Games itself,” he said. “I’m excited. It’s going to be somewhere nice. I’m looking forward to it.” A possible change in filming location would be a minor shift compared to the director swap that captured headlines months ago. Hutcherson said that he recently saw the new director, Francis Lawrence , and is excited about his vision for the next adaptation. “I just had lunch with him a couple days ago, and he’s fantastic. He’s so smart and really has his finger on the pulse of the story, and I love the way he’s going to structure the script,” Hutcherson said. “The first thing he said to me was, ‘I want to make the movie out of the book. I want the book to be the best movie possible.’ That was immediately what he led with, which meant a lot to me because the books mean a lot to me.” Sunday night’s winner for Best On-Screen Transformation , Elizabeth Banks, on the other hand, has not spoken with Lawrence, though she understands why. “They’re so early in the process. That seems silly to say because we’re going to make the movie in a few months,” she said. “But I think he’s just started, and we have just gotten scripts, and it’s just sort of all happening.” As for whether she can share any details from the script she just read, Banks kept her secrets to herself. “I can’t tell you anything,” she said. “I read a book called ‘Catching Fire’ that I’m pretty sure the movie will be based on.” Jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, gut-busting moments galore. Patricia Medina, a British-born actress whose Hollywood career as a leading lady in the ’50s spanned comedies, dramas, adventure films and thrillers, has died. She was 92. Medina, the widow of actor Joseph Cotten, passed away Saturday at Barlow Respiratory Hospital in Los Angeles. She had been in declining health. A petite, dark-haired beauty who launched her career in England in the 1930s, Medina was married to actor Richard Greene when she arrived in Hollywood. Medina starred in Abbott and Costello in the Foreign Legion (1950), Sangaree with Fernando Lamas (1953), Plunder of the Sun with Glenn Ford (1953), Botany Bay with Alan Ladd (1953) and Phantom of the Rue Morgue with Karl Malden (1954). She also played opposite Louis Hayward in the ’50s adventure films Fortunes of Captain Blood , The Lady and the Bandit, Lady in the Iron Mask and Captain Pirate . Medina and Greene were divorced in 1951. In 1960, she wed the widowed Cotten, who had made his feature film debut in Welles’ 1941 classic Citizen Kane . They appeared in a number of stage productions together. Medina made her Broadway debut in 1962 in Calculated Risk , starring Cotten, who died in 1994.
Just when you thought the bar could never be lowered for idiocy, Patricia Krentcil allegedly went and put her 5-year-old daughter in a tanning booth. The 44-year-old from New Jersey (there’s a shocker) told NBC’s local New York affiliate that she took her daughter with her to a local tanning salon. Krentcil, who puts Snooki to shame with her “tan” complexion, maintains that her kid was actually not exposed to any of the booth’s synthetic UV rays. Patricia Krentcil Tanning Arrest “I tan, she doesn’t tan,” Krentcil said , insisting that this whole story is merely a big misunderstanding. “I’m in the booth, she’s in the room. That’s all there is to it.” Krentcil, of Nutley, N.J., was arrested and charged with felony child endangerment last week. She was released on $25,000 bond and is due back in court today. “It’s nothing different than taking your daughter to go food shopping,” Krentcil said, incredulously. “There’s tons of moms that bring their children in.” Police, though, say Krentcil put her daughter in an upright tanning booth. New Jersey state law prohibits children under the age of 14 from tanning booths, while children between the ages of 14-17 must be accompanied by an adult. Police were alerted by school officials, who said that at school, the girl had what looked like a sunburn, but told friends she “went tanning with Mommy.” Rich Krentcil, the girl’s father, said it was in fact a sunburn. “This whole big thing happened, and everyone got involved,” he said. “It was 85 degrees outside, she got sunburned. That’s it. That’s all that happened.” Maybe so, but just look at that woman. Just look at her.
Josh Hutcherson is no longer hungering for a girlfriend. Why? Because he’s reportedly playing the game of love with Ariana Grande! An insider tells Life & Style that the actor is romantically involved with Victorious star Ariana Grande. She plays Cat Valentine on that Nickelodeon sitcom. “They’ve been seeing each other since the beginning of the year,” a source tells the tabloid, adding that Grande even attended the Los Angeles premiere of The Hunger Games with her man, but didn’t walk down the red carpet because “they’ve been trying to keep it low-profile.” Hutcherson previously dated Vanessa Hudgens .
Gary Ross ‘brought so much to the movie that it’s going to be hard for Francis [Lawrence] to come in,’ actor tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate No one supported Gary Ross more than “Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson, who called Ross “my guy” right before the director exited stage left. Well, with Ross out and Francis Lawrence in to direct the franchise’s second film, “Catching Fire,” the actor is just hoping that the same magic can be captured without Ross there waving the wand. “I have spoken to Gary. And I literally don’t think I’ve talked to somebody on the phone and they’ve sounded more upset than he was,” Hutcherson told MTV News at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. “He was so disappointed that he couldn’t do it. Unfortunately, with the scheduling and the timing, he just didn’t have the time to write the script and prep it the way he wants to, the way his work ethic allows him to be as great as he is, which made me extremely sad. “Gary, I think, brought so much to the movie, and he created that whole world that was so close to the book and so perfect in so many ways that it’s going to be hard for Francis to come in, for sure,” he added. “But Francis is extremely talented and everyone I’ve talked to says he’s the best guy in the world. So I think he’s going to bring a lot. I haven’t spoken to Francis. I’ve spoken to Gary.” Given how epic “The Hunger Games” is, Lawrence makes for an interesting choice. He’s no stranger to making visuals that go big or go home, whether as a music video director who has created show-stopping clips for the likes of Beyonc
