‘Hunger Games’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know!

It’s been a long road to Panem; MTV News takes a trip down memory lane as the adaptation hits the big screen! By Kara Warner Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Happy “Hunger Games” release day! What a long, bleak and dystopian road it has been so far. We’ve been waiting for this day so long and with so much hope and hype that it feels like we’ve been through the Reaping ourselves. To celebrate this momentous occasion, we have compiled a cheat sheet of everything you need to know about the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ beloved best-selling novel. The Prologue Back in spring 2009, just several months after the book’s well-received publication , Lionsgate won a bidding war for the rights to translate the gripping tale from page to screen. The next big question was, of course, who would be chosen to portray the impoverished “girl on fire” fighting for survival in a seemingly unjustly ruled society? The Reaping The highly publicized search for the perfect Katniss Everdeen featured a healthy list of young A-list actresses vying for the role, including Chloe Grace Moretz, Abigail Breslin and Hailee Steinfeld, all of whom were admitted fans . Finally, in May of last year, the suspense ended with the announcement that “Winter’s Bone” star and Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence had won the role. The rest of the “Games” puzzle pieces fell quickly in place, with “Pleasantville” helmer Gary Ross in the director’s chair , who reportedly beat out David Slade (“Eclipse”) and Sam Mendes (“Revolutionary Road”), and rising stars Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson claiming the roles of Katniss’ best friend Gale Hawthorne and the dependable “boy with the bread” Peeta Mallark . Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz and Wes Bentley would all later join the cast in the film’s key supporting roles of escort Effie Trinket , mentor Haymitch Abernathy, District 12 stylist Cinna and Seneca Crane, respectively. The Production Games Once the film’s March 23, 2012 release date was announced, production shifted into high gear in the forests of North Carolina. In spring 2011, we got our official first look at Lawrence in character, followed thereafter by glimpses of Hutcherson and Hemsworth . And although the matter of making the film was serious business, we later discovered that the castmembers had lots of fun on set, particularly Hutcherson, who told us the humorous tale of his successful, but sneaky, practical joke he played on Lawrence . After that, we were very happy to treat fans to MTV’s exclusive first look at footage of Katniss in action during the VMAs . The Fan Fervor and Whirlwind Promotional Tour Once production wrapped, we did our best to track down the stars for their thoughts about their roles and the filmmaking process. Lawrence told us all about her training regimen and admitted that all her hours spent with an archery coach were “really fun.” Hutcherson shared his perspective on the intense audition process and how he felt he is “so right” for the role . These little teases and costume reveals were enough to tide us over until we scored multiple sit-down interviews with the castmembers and the mall tours began, all leading up to the star-studded Hollywood premiere , for which we provided in-depth coverage via our live stream . With early ticket sales breaking records and box-office predictions very high , all that’s left to do is wait and watch as the engrossing story of Katniss and company continues to catch fire. ‘Hunger Games’ ‘Blew My Mind,’ Josh Hutcherson Says

‘I was so happy how it came together,’ actor tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Josh Hutcherson Photo: MTV News In addition to obsessing over our own reactions to finally seeing “The Hunger Games,” we’ve been enjoying collecting the initial reactions from the castmembers themselves, whose pre-screening thoughts ranged from anxiety to excitement. When MTV News caught up with Josh Hutcherson recently, we asked him what goes through his mind any time he screens a movie he worked on. “Honestly, I just hope it doesn’t suck. That’s my mentality when I go in to watch one of my movies,” Hutcherson said with a self-deprecating smile. “I hope I don’t get bored watching it, and I didn’t watching this. I was so happy how it came together. It really, to me, was kind of the most interesting way this story could be told. The way Gary [Ross] captured the essence of the story and the characters, cinematically, is incredible.” Hutcherson went on to say that the one thing that surprised him most was not any of the actors’ performances but the music backing them. “I think the score, to me, was one of the most surprising things,” he revealed. “I think it’s really interesting. And some of the editing choices that were made were so cool and different and nothing I’d ever seen before. Like, in the scene when Jennifer is stung by the Tracker Jackers. That kind of cool editing thing. It really kind of blew my mind.” But did it blow his mind enough to also evoke emotion via his tear ducts? Did Hutcherson shed any tears while watching the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-seller? “Inside I did. I held it in,” he said, before adding that he’s not at all afraid to let the waterworks flow during movies, particularly those that star Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin. “When I saw ‘My Sister’s Keeper,’ I openly wept the entire movie, and I feel comfortable saying that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Josh Hutcherson Prepares for a Pounding in High School Slasher Detention

Joseph Kahn’s Detention had me from its first knowingly self-aware trailer, and while word out of SXSW was polarizing — a love it or hate it kind of deal, by many accounts — it’s one of my more anticipated films of the spring. True, the competition this season isn’t too stiff, but still! Watch Josh Hutcherson (of next months The Hunger Games , perhaps you’ve heard of it?) as a cute hipster kid get ready to take a beating from the school tough guy while an actual killer runs rampant through town and tell me this isn’t worth putting on the calendar for April. Here’s the film’s full trailer, to give you a sense of what we’re in for. Admittedly, the nonstop pop culture references schtick has been almost fully exhausted by now but good, clever high school comedies never get old. Call it Not Another Not Another Teen Movie , if you will/must. Adding to the intrigue: Detention was shot half a year before Hutcherson was cast as Peeta in The Hunger Games , so the timing of release here is obvious. Will Hunger Games fans flock to the R-rated horror comedy to see a new side of Hutcherson in what may be the edgiest/darkest/ballsiest project since he graduated from family flicks? Detention will be released in select theaters on April 13. [via Badass Digest ]

Amazing Spider-Man Makes His Mark In New York

MTV News joins Spidey supporters to spread the friendly neighborhood web-slinger’s insignia all across Manhattan. By Josh Wigler Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Photo: Marvel / Columbia Pictures NEW YORK — Spider-Man needs support. Sure, he’s better off than most: Spinning webs and climbing walls does have its perks. But a strong superhero is nothing without a strong base of supporters championing his every move — something that isn’t exactly easy for Spidey to accomplish with the Daily Bugle painting him as a menace on every other front page. Perhaps MTV News can show the hero in a different light. On February 17, we were invited to join a small group of passionate supporters to spread the mark of Spider-Man all across New York City. Our mission: to travel to predetermined locations throughout Manhattan to tag specific walls with the Amazing Spider-Man’s famous insignia. “That’s kind of odd,” you might be saying to yourself. But there was nothing odd about it to Abigail Flynn, one of the carefully selected Spidey supporters out in full force on behalf of the amazing web-slinger. “We’re supporting Spider-Man,” Flynn told MTV News of the campaign. “We’re putting up the mark of the Spider-Man around the city to spread awareness and spread his message.” Fellow web-head Walter Sojda added, “He’s fighting for the little guy. We have to show that in New York, we care about Spider-Man. We’re supporting him here.” New York isn’t the only place Spider-Man has recently found support. All last week, the superhero’s message was spread throughout five other American cities, including Los Angeles, Seattle and Atlanta. Clearly, the hero’s national awareness is on the rise — good timing, no doubt, considering he has a movie on the way! Spreading the mark of Spider-Man isn’t the only thing that has our spider senses tingling here at MTV News. Early last week, MTV Splash Page received a mysterious backpack in the mail, with no explanation as to its origin other than a haphazardly attached piece of duct tape reading “Property of Peter Parker.” Spidey’s supporters were tight-lipped when asked about Parker’s identity, so the connection between the two remains unclear for now. Here’s something that is clear: Despite what the Bugle says, there’s a whole lot of love out there for your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man — and Manhattan has the mark to prove it. ‘Twilight’ Vs. ‘Hunger Games’: How Do They Compare?

In ‘Twilight’ Tuesday, Josh Hutcherson says he understands the connection, but ‘the challenges the characters face are very different.’ By Kara Warner Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence Photo: MTV News Disclaimer: This is not a story about warring fanbases, nor is it intended to instigate a fan war. This is about how the smashing success of “The Twilight Saga” has led to Hollywood’s search for another young-adult mega-franchise and the media’s tendency to compare every teen-targeted film to it. “Twilight” is its own magical, mysterious beast, the overwhelming success of which we will very likely not see replicated anytime soon. While there are indeed similarities between the Stephenie Meyer-created behemoth and other successful franchises like “Harry Potter,” they are very, very different. The latest “Twilight”-vs.-X conversation features the highly anticipated “Hunger Games” movie. In my opinion, there are only two comparable elements: They are both based on very popular young-adult novels and feature two romantic interests for the female protagonist. MTV News recently posed the comparison question to “Hunger Games” stars Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence, who both said they understand the link. “I get why people make the connections, because it’s a very popular book, especially amongst young people,” Hutcherson said. “However, I think it’s an entirely different world, and the challenges the characters face are very different.” Those of us who have read both series — and “Potter,” for that matter — likely agree with Hutcherson and know they are completely different stories. As long as the greater population at large can accept and understand these differences, I am completely OK with the many comparisons. Just don’t lump the two together for the sake of convenience. The best thing I’ve seen so far in the “Twilight” and “Hunger Games” comparisons is the fact that Edward Cullen himself, Robert Pattinson, has read “Games” and is just as excited as we are to see the film — in addition to “Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” of course. “I sort of came across it last year, and I didn’t realize it was the most enormous thing in the world,” Pattinson told Entertainment Weekly last year. “It’s good! It will be a good movie.” Now if I can just get a slightly out-of-touch colleague to stop harassing me with “But where are the sparkly vampires?” questions every time a new “Hunger Games” trailer or teaser premieres, I’ll feel as though we’ve made some headway on the subject. What do you think of the “Twilight” and “Hunger Games” comparisons? Tweet me @karawarner with your thoughts and ideas for future “Twilight” Tuesday columns! ‘Hunger Games’ Stars ‘Blown Away’ By The Capitol

But Jennifer Lawrence is less excited about her singing: ‘I am a horrible singer. And I’m an even worse person to be around when I’m singing.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jennifer Lawrence Photo: MTV News For our fellow “Hunger Games” fans who obsess over Suzanne Collins’ brilliant books and their upcoming film adaptations as much as we do, there are so many things to love about the story that it’s difficult to pick just one or two (or five) things we’re looking forward to seeing when the movie opens March 23. But two of the most intriguing elements involved in the book-to-movie translation are what the Capitol will look like and how star Jennifer Lawrence will sound singing Rue’s Lullaby. MTV News was lucky enough to get a few hints about those specific topics during our recent chat with Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, both of whom can’t wait to see the Capitol in the finished film but disagree about their excitement for Lawrence’s singing skills. “[I’m excited to see] everything in the Capitol,” Lawrence said. “Every time we showed up at a Capitol scene, I was so blown away. Everything was more than you could have even imagined.” “What was cool about the stuff in the Capitol, so much was practical,” Hutcherson added. “The whole apartment scene was all a set they built that was super, incredibly futuristic and amazing, and to see how that is integrated with the whole green-screen world as well is going to be really, really cool.” Lawrence was not quite as enthusiastic about hearing her voice in the film, however. When we brought up the subject, she seemed to immediately get nervous about it. “Oh God, oh God. Yeah, I did [sing],” she said when asked about recording “Rue’s Lullaby.” “I’m a terrible singer.” “She’s not,” Hutcherson said. “No, Josh! Stop,” Lawrence said to Hutcherson with sincerity. “He is messing with everyone.” “She’s been called the songbird of her generation,” Hutcherson jumped in with a smile, referencing a Will Ferrell line in “Step Brothers.” “My voice is a combination of Fergie and Jesus,” Lawrence played along. “No, I am a horrible singer. And I’m an even worse person to be around when I’m singing. I’m a terrible singer. I hated it.” Lawrence said the recording process with famed producer T-Bone Burnett was particularly excruciating. “T-Bone Burnett, like, the best person to ever happen to music is, like, listening in the other room. I kept getting ready, and then the music would play, and I’d [freak out],” she recalled. “Nothing would come out of my mouth.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Hunger Games’ Stars Tackle Your Final Questions!

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth share their favorite bands and much more. By Kara Warner Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss and Liam Hemsworth as Gale in “The Hunger Games.” Photo: Murray Close/ Lionsgate Entertainment Once again, we’re back with “Hunger Games” stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth for a final round of fan-asked questions and answers with the three soon-to-be superstars. Over the course of the past few weeks, Lawrence, Hutcherson and Hemsworth have addressed varied topics such as on-set pranks , on-the-job injuries and which actor is most like his or her character . Today marks our final installment, in which the three lead actors from the highly anticipated film discuss musical influences, getting into character, being on fire and chemistry with their co-stars. @vic_rendueles: Music plays a big part in the HG. What type of music inspires you and why? Josh Hutcherson : Music is a huge part of my life. If I feel off for a couple of days, chances are I’ve not been listening to enough music — it’s that important to me. But I listen to everything from ’60s rock and roll to the Arctic Monkeys to the Black Keys to dubstep, so it’s literally full-on schizophrenic, my music taste. Jennifer Lawrence : I was just listening to Mumford & Sons on the way up here — love Mumford, the Black Keys, Jack White. I’m really looking forward to the musical part of the movie; T-Bone Burnett is producing it , and he’s the best in the world, so I’m really looking forward to that. Liam Hemsworth : One of my favorite bands is Coldplay; I love Coldplay. I love a lot of old school rock too — Pink Floyd, Guns N’ Roses — I love that stuff. Music is a great way to get in a good headspace if you have an intense scene or any kind of scene. There’s always some kind of music that can help you feel and get in to that kind of headspace. @KiwiMcI: Was it hard to balance Katniss’ inner vulnerability with the strength she’s forced to adopt in the horrors of the arena? Lawrence : Wow, what a question. Let’s see, I think everybody has vulnerability and strength. I think she’s vulnerable anyway, like all of the tributes, because none of them really want to be there. They’re chosen randomly, they’re all forced into the arena. She gathers strength, she has to fight to survive. She’s promised her sister that she would come back, so she replaces her vulnerability with strength. @maartjej239: How was it to be “on fire” in the chariots? Lawrence : Oh, that was fake. I wasn’t actually on fire, thank God. … I think they’ll just add that later, hopefully. @eringabin: In a postapocalyptic world like Panem, what would your most valuable survival skill be? Hemsworth : I’d hope that I could shoot like Katniss. That would probably help a lot. I can’t, though. @LoveAcrossTime: From the trailer alone, the fans already see the amazing chemistry between [Katniss and Peeta]. Was that an instant thing? Hutcherson : It really was. Jennifer and I hit it off right away, as did myself and Liam. Jennifer and I are kind of from the same part of the country, we had a similar upbringing, the same kind of system, more or less. She’s just a very real person, and you don’t meet many actresses that are super real and down to earth and genuine and are extremely talented on top of all that, so she kind of has the whole thing going on, and she’s an awesome person. I really hit it off with her. Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
