Swedish House Mafia’s ‘Masquerade Motel’ Takes Over South Beach

Thousands of fans treated to sight and sound spectacular during trio’s Miami Music Week ‘One Night Stand.’ By Akshay Bhansali and Adam Stewart Swedish House Mafia Photo: 2010 Denise Truscello MIAMI — Swedish House Mafia attempted — and executed — a spectacle of mammoth proportions on Miami’s South Beach shore on Saturday. With close to 15,000 masked fans checked in and hundreds of others watching and dancing alongside a massive tent, the house music super-group treated their fans to the nine-hour mini-festival that was “Masquerade Motel: One Night Stand.” While the three Swedes were the headliners, their supporting lineup alone was worth marveling over: Junior Sanchez, A-Trak, Armand Van Helden, Max Vangeli, AN21, Dirty South, and Pete Tong (who also emceed the event) were among the big-name performers. But when it came time for Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso to take the stage, it was clear this show would be like no other Miami has seen. The curtain dropped to reveal a massive, 40-foot structure adorned with LED screens, lights, pyro and speakers. And with the trio standing at the center of it all, the crowd exploded. Swedish House Mafia opened with their late-summer 2010 anthem, “Miami 2 Ibiza,” which was followed by “Dynamite,” a new track by Alesso, who was recently signed to Ingrosso’s Refune Record Label. Then followed the stream of new music fans had been eagerly awaiting. SHM dropped a block of fresh tunes, a highlight of which was an off-center, Arabian-style techno monster that the crowd went berserk for, as the guys danced onstage in sync with their fans. Then there was a remix of deadmau5 ‘s “Strobe.” Next was Marco V’s “Reaver” and a mash-up of Angello’s “Show Me Love” and “KNAS,” which kicked the show into overdrive, accompanied by a stunning visual display. David Guetta Brings F.M.I.F. Party To Miami Music Week

Guetta and his wife, Cathy, present their ‘F— Me I’m Famous’ brand in the U.S. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: MTV News MIAMI — French beatsmith David Guetta and his wife Cathy plan to launch their clubber power-party brand in the U.S. in a big way. Called “F— Me I’m Famous,” it’s named after the electronic dance music party that takes place every year as part of the summer EDM circuit in Ibiza, Spain. On Saturday (March 26) at Club Mansion in Miami, Cathy and David delivered a brand debut of sorts for attendees of Miami Music Week . The Guettas and record label EMI have signed a global partnership to promote F.M.I.F. events around the world, and they’re banking on seeing it blossom here in the States. With frequent collaborator and friend will.i.am and Dutch house-music producer Sidney Sampson by his side, David Guetta took to the decks just after 1 a.m. Saturday and charged into a vicious Afrojack tune, followed by his hit single “One Love” and “Gettin’ Over You,” the chorus of which fans in the house knew by heart. As Guetta dropped out the sound, the audience belted out Fergie’s vocals without missing a beat. After spinning hit singles “Sexy Chick” and Flo Rida’s “Club Can’t Handle Me,” Guetta dropped in his fiery mix of Far East Movement’s “Like a G6,” a joint the DJ/producer has no plans to release but which he’s shared with lil’ brother Afrojack for their touring gigs. The Black Eyed Peas “Boom Boom Pow” followed. Notably, will.i.am joined DG onstage to repeatedly lend the vocal “Everybody!” and a set of freestyle bars on what’s possibly a new song, a banger with a progressive break that peaks into a driving house tune after LMFAO vocals announce, “I’m David Guetta, bitch!” So club fans, rejoice: More F— Me I’m Famous parties are right around the corner. When we caught up with Guetta on Friday afternoon, he was pleased to announce the brand has found a home in Las Vegas. “I’m super-excited about this, the F— Me I’m Famous party,” Guetta said. “I’m taking over Vegas. This is gonna be crazy. We are starting a pool party at Wet Republic, and that’s gonna be every Sunday. “It’s the first time we are gonna do a residency like this, except in Ibiza. We’re gonna do also three really big concerts at the Joint [at the Vegas Hard Rock Hotel & Casino]. We have one for Memorial Day. That’s gonna be a big thing. We’re gonna come with the whole production from Europe. So this is probably an important moment for our brand, F— Me I’m Famous, starting to find a life and a home in America. The F— Me I’m Famous party at Wet Republic in Las Vegas will open April 10 and run Sundays through May 1, according to Wet Republic Las Vegas’ website . Swedish House Mafia’s ‘One Night Stand’: A Behind-The-Scenes Look

Swedish House Mafia (file) Photo: Denise Truscello/WireImage In case you’ve missed it, they’re building a little something on the beach along 8th Street and Ocean Drive in Miami. No, that’s not an airplane hangar, although it could just as easily be one. We’re just one day away from putting our “Masks On” and joining the Swedish House Mafia as they present their highly anticipated “Masquerade Motel: One Night Stand,” a 10-hour mini festival featuring the likes of A-Trak, Armand Van Helden, Max Vangeli, AN21, Dirty South and Pete Tong, among others. Won’t be in Miami? Well, you’re in luck. MTV News was fortunate enough to get an inside look at the arena under construction when show director Christian Larson gave us a tour. “The ‘Masquerade Motel’ was a concept that was born in Ibiza in Spain, where the boys have their club night every summer,” he explained. “It’s sexy, it’s mysterious. It’s nighttime in Ibiza — it’s summer and it’s hot — and that’s what we’re bringing together in the concept now, because we think it really works for Miami.” Taking over a full three blocks of beachfront real estate in the sand, “One Night Stand” is both physically and technically one of the biggest events ever held in South Beach. “We’ve got about 110,000 watts of sound, just being loaded in right now, a whole lot of lighting, [and] about 700 square feet of HD video wall,” Larson said. “So there’s a lot of cool [things] to see!” But the fun doesn’t stop within the confines of the physical arena; the party will actually spill out onto another massive section of oceanfront sand, effectively doubling the overall footprint of the show. “There’s a huge area out there, there’s going to be tanning beds [and] misters and bars and food,” Larson said. There will also be plenty of bikini-clad fans of the international superstars, dancing the day away in the sand. Swedish House Mafia members Axwell, Ingrosso and Angello wouldn’t have it any other way. Being directly involved in the event’s most minute details from conception to completion, the creativity and originality of the Swedes permeate every square inch of their Miami masterpiece. “The guys always have so many ideas,” Larson said. “And they obviously have a lot of new music prepared for the show that they’re really excited to play to the crowd. They’re so involved in everything, from the dress code to the sunbathing area to what things should look like to the VIP [area] and the pyros. ‘We want more confetti! And more screens!’ “Steve was just here on the site and he said, ‘We should have four huge JumboTrons on the beach so people can see everything from the water!’ Larson continued with a laugh. “So we’re just going to make that happen, I guess!” While it hasn’t yet been confirmed whether the last-minute big screens will indeed be in place for what is sure to be thousands of curious onlookers, fans do have a chance to get their hands on tickets if they partake in a little scavenger hunt that the boys have arranged. Just find all the “keys” posted around Miami Beach and you could gain access to one of Miami Music Week’s most sought-after events! Swedish House Mafia’s ‘Save The World’ To Debut At Miami Music Week

‘It’s not the ‘One’ rip-off, it’s not the ‘Miami 2 Ibiza’ rip-off, it’s just something new,’ Axwell says. By Adam Stewart Swedish House Mafia DJs Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Steve Angello Photo: 2010 Denise Truscello Fasten your seat belts. The Swedes are coming back to Miami , and if the past is any indicator of the future, we all know what that means. Coming off a monthlong studio session in Los Angeles, you can bet your bottom dollar that Swedish House Mafia’s latest single will be nothing short of epic. It’s no secret that the stakes are high. Having been dubbed owners of the unofficial Winter Music Conference anthems the past two years running with “Leave the World Behind” and “One,” respectively, Ax, Seb and Steve know that their massive following expects nothing short of another Miami monster. And according to Axwell, when the curtain falls at Saturday’s “Masquerade Motel: One Night Stand,” their new song “Save the World” will deliver just that. “It’s one of the songs that came out of the studio sessions we had over here in L.A. this year,” Axwell told MTV News of the new indie-rock-infused track, which he promises is nothing like anything they’ve produced in the past. “I think a good thing is always to leave what you did there and start fresh,” he said. “Like with ‘Save the World,’ for example. It’s not the ‘One’ rip-off, it’s not the ‘Miami 2 Ibiza’ rip-off, it’s just something new. It seems like it’s what people want to hear.” That’s not to say that the new single or their upcoming album won’t have that iconic big-room house vibe. “We’ll have some duplication of the other [classic tracks],” Axwell explained, “[but] there’s a lot of music coming out [that sounds] similar. It’s nice to sort of break away from that a little bit, and we went completely the opposite way — like to indie dance, rock-inspired stuff. So, we just want to keep it fresh and interesting all the time.” With uplifting rock synths and an impossible-to-not-chant-along-with hook, “Save the World” has all the elements of a 2011 Miami anthem in the making, and will undoubtedly be one of the week’s most buzzed-about tracks. Featuring the vocals of fellow Swede John Martin, “Save the World” flawlessly fits the mold as a crowd-pleaser that will undoubtedly appeal to the group’s loyal fans. “We found [John] during the winter. He has a fantastic voice, and the way things are looking now, he’s going to be on that track and maybe one more,” Axwell said. “There was a lot of speculation as to who it was, like even Chris Martin [of Coldplay]! While no collaborations with Chris or any other rockers have been disclosed or even hinted as of late, the Swedes have again proved their versatility in the exploding and ever-morphing genre of electronic dance music. MTV News’ Top 25 Songs Of 2010: The Countdown Begins!

We unveil our favorite tracks of the year, starting with 25 through 18. By James Montgomery Rick Ross Photo: Christie Goodwin/ Getty Images In 2010, we fell in love with guys named Alejandro and Gurls from California. We learned how to Dougie and Blow Money Fast, shouted F— You and Oh My God, wished on Airplanes in the night sky, Loved the Way You Lie and got Fancy. We marveled at the Power one man possessed and pined openly for the Only Girl (In the World). In short, we lived vicariously through music — and 2010 was a heck of a year to do so. But in a year with so many genuinely great songs, what was the greatest? It’s a tough question to answer, but we decided to give it a try. Over the past month, we asked the MTV News staff to come up with their own list of their 25 favorite songs of 2010; they didn’t have to be singles and, really, they didn’t even have to be released in 2010. We were looking for any song that made an impact this year, be it commercially, culturally or critically. When we finally received all the lists, we had proof of just what a year it was: Our staffers ended up picking more than 300 different songs from some 200 artists, and it was up to a select few to tabulate the results and create a top 25. Using a point system — the #1 song on each list received 25 points, the #25 song received 1 point — we spent the next few weeks whittling down the lists. Finally, after some frantic addition (math was never our strong suit) and some rather spirited debate, we had our list — and we feel it’s a great one, full of songs by artists both big and small, yet all impactful in some way. It wasn’t easy, but we got it done. This week, we’ll roll out numbers 25-11, and then on Monday, we’ll begin to unveil our top 10. Oh, and we’re interested in seeing your lists too. Feel free to add them in the comments below. But now, without further ado, let’s look back on the year that was, by kicking off our countdown of the Top 25 Songs of 2010. 25. Rick Ross (featuring Ne-Yo), “Super High” Total Points : 48 The debut single from Ross’ Teflon Don album, “Super High” dropped in May and dazzled everyone with its mix of style (check Ne-Yo’s glossy, flossy chorus) and swagger (Ross boasts about besting foes “by margins larger than Fran Tarkenton” and insists that “only fly bitches ride with the Boss”). Produced by DJ Clark Kent, it glides by swatches of both N.W.A and silky ’70s R&B act Enchantment, which sort of makes it a pretty apt metaphor for Ross himself, when you think about it. 24. Swedish House Mafia, “One (Your Name)” Total Points : 50 (named on two ballots) It recalls, alternately, a blender, a rubber band, a Simon, a motorcycle and something from the “Mortal Kombat” soundtrack (and that’s just in the crowd-uniting intro). But, really, “One” is the year’s best club anthem, a seamless mixture of stray sounds, house stomp and monster rave hooks that packed dance floors from Iowa to Ibiza (and the Jersey Shore too). Throw in hints of acoustic guitar, piano and, uh, Pharrell Williams, and you’ve got a track that’s practically bursting its britches, but it’s a credit to the trio of Swedish stars that produced it that “One” remains slipstream-tight. Chances are, when Rihanna, Usher and Chris Brown made their respective forays into dance music, this was the track that inspired them to do so. 23. LCD Soundsystem, “I Can Change” Total Points : 50 (named on three ballots) A woozy mixture of bloopy electronics and, well, naked insecurity, “I Can Change” is, on the surface, just a come-down track from a night of excess and elation. But what makes it great is what makes all of James Murphy’s songs so great: the fact that, beneath it all, there beats a very human heart, a desperate, pleading one that needs love no matter what. Lie to him, build him up and then tear him down, Murphy doesn’t care, so long as he’s coming home with you tonight. “It’s good in the dark,” he sings, but he’s also smart enough to cover what happens in the light too. The end result may not be pretty, but, hey, at least he’s honest. 22. Yeasayer, “O.N.E.” Total Points : 52 What happens when one of Brooklyn’s brightest bands decides: “Screw this, let’s make a pop record?” “O.N.E.,” of course. A sumptuous, supple and sublimely silly tune — on an album, Odd Blood, that’s full of them — “O.N.E.” worms along on undulating synth lines, funky fretwork and a downright sexxxy falsetto yelp, and somewhere along the way, it also manages to transform itself into the picture-perfect pop song, for the 22nd century and beyond. All of which is a rather bookish way of saying Britney, Katy and Gaga wish they could pull something like this off. 21. Robyn, “Hang With Me” Total Points : 54 Robyn’s best songs are always her most bittersweet, and “Hang With Me” is no exception. A rather fragile, heartbreaking exploration of those first tentative steps into (or out of) love, it’s also a starry, synthy super-ballad, an electro-pop wonder that just keeps chiming along until the chorus hits, the joy overloads and everything is right with the world. Robyn cautions us not to fall “recklessly, headlessly” in love with her, but when she makes songs as good as “Hang With Me,” it’s sort of difficult not to. 20. The National, “Bloodbuzz Ohio” Total Points : 59 White-collar angst from blue-collar barflies, “Bloodbuzz” is the sound of all that is terrifying and unyielding in adulthood, a weary warbler practically bowed under with the unspoken regrets of anyone who’s ever been up against the wall or in too deep. Matt Berninger is at his boozy, woozy best, mumbling the year’s most perfectly crushing line — “I still owe money to the money I owe” — while the guitars fret beneath him and the water continues to rise. There’s no stopping the inevitable, after all. 19. Alicia Keys, “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” Total Points : 60 A simmering, downright serpentine track that pulses on little more than a barebones back track, noirish piano chords and — above all else — Keys’ breathless, deft vocals, “Un-Thinkable” is the rare example of a megastar stripping it all away and just being brave. And it packs the kind of wallop no amount of studio trickery could muster as a result. Keys is laying it all on the line here, and she’s doing it because she deserves it. Or at least she thinks she does. And that caveat is the key: She’s the rare talent who’s also willing to admit that she has doubts, which makes her — and this song — all the more impactful. 18. Chris Brown, “Deuces” Total Points : 64 Unapologetic, brash and, sure, even cocky, “Deuces” is Chris Brown’s “FU” to the world, and truth be told, he’s at his absolute best when he’s angry. In theory, the song is little more than a supremely swaggering kiss-off to a nagging ex, but when he sings, “I’m movin’ on to something better,” you can’t help but think that’s also addressing everyone who’s vilified him over the past 18 months — and that’s probably the point. He knows you’re mad, but so what? MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010 countdown continues Friday, when we reveal 17 through 11 on our list. The top 10 begins rolling out Monday, so make sure to keep checking back to see what song we’ve named #1. And don’t forget to share your picks in the comments below!
