Skinny Gap Model Sparks Controversy, Company Responds in Statement

A social media uproar was sparked this week by a skinny Gap model. We’re not talking your generic skinny model, either. This woman is … well, she’s really thin. The clothing brand Tweeted out this photo of the woman modeling a plaid green shirt-dress with the caption, “Dress up your days in pastel plaid #since1969”: The lighting and background don’t help, but followers immediately began criticizing the model’s weight and what message the company was sending. One wrote, “Seriously, @Gap? In what world do people look like this? Perhaps you could select models who represent regular gals & not a skeletor ghost.” In response, the company issued a statement to media outlets: “Our intentions have always been to celebrate diversity in our marketing and champion people for who they are,” Gap Inc. spokesperson Edie Kissko said in response. “Upon reflection, we understand the sensitivity surrounding this photo. Customer feedback is important to us and we think this is a valuable conversation to learn from.” Meanwhile, others began “skinny-shaming” the model , saying she “looks like she needs a hamburger and some sunlight,” which led to some reverse backlash. One defender of the Tweet stated that while the photo looked severe, his wife is incredibly thin and is often the subject of ridicule because of her body. He said that his spouse does not have an eating disorder but this is often assumed for no reason, leaving her subject to body image issues. It’s an interesting point. While fat-shaming is of course more common, as we’ve seen with Kate Middleton (below), a woman can be naturally slender and subject to scrutiny as well. What do you think of the controversial Gap photo? Should the brand use more “regular” models? Is this skinny-shaming and just fat-shaming in reverse? Kate Middleton: Her 29 Best Looks 1. Marvel Comics Unveil Black Captain America And Female Thor, Films Will Not Follow Suit

When will Hollywood be ready to be as diverse and unconventional as their source material? Marvel Comics Change Race And Genders Of Heroes, Films Will Remain The Same Marvel announced some major shakeups in the genders and races of some of their most beloved comic-book heroes. A Female character pics up the hammer of Thor, and Falcon, a Black superhero, inherits the role of Captain America. But studio-heads want you to know that Marvel’s main heroes will be remaining lily-white and male for the foreseeable future. Via HuffPost : Marvel announced last week that future comic books will feature a female Thor and black Captain America, but fans expecting to see those specific diversifications translate to the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be in for some disappointment. Speaking to HuffPost Entertainment during press rounds for the forthcoming film “Guardians of the Galaxy,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said he didn’t anticipate the developments would affect anything the studio has planned on the theatrical front at the moment. “I love when they change things up and move things along and do the unexpected,” Feige told HuffPost Entertainment about Marvel Comics. “That’s why these characters have endured for 50-plus years, and it gives us material to keep the movies fresh down the line. I’m not going to say any of those changes are going to happen any time soon in the movies, but the fact that they have happened — and, by the way, that’s happened before; there have been female Thors and black Captain Americas in the past — keeps it current and in the public eye.” As it was revealed last week, Marvel Studios has plans for features through 2019, with 10 movies on the schedule, including “Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Ant-Man” and “Captain America 3.” Whether the studio branches out to bring superheroes such as Black Panther or Ms. Marvel to the big screen is unclear, but Feige is not without options. “Listen, I mean, one of the nicknames of Marvel comics is ‘The House of Ideas,’” Feige said of the source material available to him. “Everything they do in publishing becomes possible material for us to turn into movies.” Fair enough, actors sign contracts and you can’t just change at the drop of a hat…but we bet Anthony Mackie (who plays Falcon in the current Marvel film-universe) was a bit bummed to hear he won’t be putting on that All-American armor anytime soon.

Best Singers Ranked According to Vocal Range: Who’s the Greatest of All Time?!

A recent study of past and present pop music sought to rank the greatest singers of all time on the basis of their vocal range. We think it’s safe to say the results are… surprising. 17 Great Singers Ranked By Vocal Range! 1. Taylor Swift – #77 Taylor glammed up for the red carpet. Photos like this remind us why she’s had so many boyfriends. For example, if you can predict ahead of time which two crooners tied for the top spot, well then you, sir or madam, have quite the ear for music. You should probably replace all three judges on American Idol and produce Caleb Johnson ‘s first number one record. In other words, you can’t predict this list. No one can. We’ve all got our ideas of what constitutes good and bad music and this list throws concepts like creative ingenuity, songwriting ability and stage presence right out the window and judges artists solely by the highest and lowest notes they can hit. So there is a world in which Miley Cyrus and Bob Dylan are ranked side-by-side and you can’t even argue against it because, hey…it’s science. Check out the gallery above for some of the more jaw-dropping entries on the list. Bear in mind, this isn’t a comprehensive study of every singer that ever recorded, just a sampling of the top pop singers of the past 50 years, and the way they stack up against one another is sometimes unbelievable. Surprising revelations include: Katy Perry is a better singer than Taylor Swift? John Lennon and Elvis Presley have the exact same vocal range? Eminem is considered a singer?! So while John Kaufman won the big prize last night, this list answers the question of who is really The Voice. The answer(s) are certainly unexpected. As is this pretty decent cover of Dylan’s “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” by Miley. Maybe they’re not so different after all! Miley Cyrus ft. Bolitics: GOP Senator Puts Republican Party On Blast For Voter Suppression Antics – “I Won’t Defend Them Anymore”

GOP Senator Blasts Republican Party For Voter Suppression Practices The Republican party has long been engaging in voter suppression antics to keep minority and democratic voters in general from the polls and now one of their own is calling them out on their bullisht. Think Progress As his own party pushed through the Wisconsin Senate the latest in a series of measures to make it harder to vote in the state, Sen. Dale Schultz (R) blasted the efforts as “trying to suppress the vote” last week. Schultz, who is not seeking re-election and was the lone Republican to oppose a bill last week to limit the hours of early voting in every jurisdiction in the state, was a guest on The Devil’s Advocates radio program on Madison’s 92.1 FM last Wednesday. Asked why his party pushed the bill, Schultz responded, “I am not willing to defend them anymore. I’m just not and I’m embarrassed by this.” Schultz argued that this and dozens of similar bills before the Senate this were based on “mythology” that voter fraud is a serious concern: “I began this session thinking that there was some lack of faith in our voting process and we maybe needed to address it. But I have come to the conclusion that this is far less noble.” Noting that Republican President Dwight Eisenhower championed the 1957 civil rights law, Schultz said that he could not “find any real reason” for his party’s effort to make it harder to vote: SCHULTZ: It’s just, I think, sad when a political party — my political party — has so lost faith in its ideas that it’s pouring all of its energy into election mechanics. And again, I’m a guy who understands and appreciates what we should be doing in order to make sure every vote counts, every vote is legitimate. But that fact is, it ought to be abundantly clear to everybody in this state that there is no massive voter fraud. The only thing that we do have in this state is we have long lines of people who want to vote. And it seems to me that we should be doing everything we can to make it easier, to help these people get their votes counted. And that we should be pitching as political parties our ideas for improving things in the future, rather than mucking around in the mechanics and making it more confrontational at the voting sites and trying to suppress the vote. Schultz added that the suppression was “just plain wrong,” adding, “It is all predicated on some belief there is a massive fraud or irregularities, something my colleagues have been hot on the trail for three years and have failed miserably at demonstrating.” The GOP-controlled Assembly has already passed a similar bill. A 2011 study by the non-partisan Brennan Center found just seven cases of voter fraud in Wisconsin’s 2004 election, out of three million votes cast — a fraud rate of just 0.0002 percent. Can’t deny your shady practices when one of your own calls you out!
