Washington Post: Independence Day an Atheist Holiday

Someone get Lee Greenwood on the phone; he’s going to want to know about this. In a front-page Style section report July 5, The Washington Post breathed a sigh of relief that Independence Day gives Americans a break from those God-heavy holidays like Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. “The trouble with most major holidays in the United States, if you’re an atheist, is that it’s difficult to ignore the ‘holy day’ etymology,” Monica Hesse reported. “But not the Fourth of July. The Fourth is a little deity-free celebration stationed in the middle of summer for believers and non-believers alike.” Finally, a break from those religious zealots Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. Thank God. Hesse highlighted an annual gathering of atheists in Lorton, Va., a suburb of Washington, D.C. With tongues presumably in cheeks, the organizers promoted the event as “Ungodly Leaders to Gather at Potomac Picnic.” She defended atheists as misunderstood. “The most common misapprehension they encounter is that they must be immoral – that, lacking the promise or threat of an afterlife, they have no incentive to be good,” she said. “They atheists here find this particularly offensive, as they say they believe in kindness for the sake of kindness, making the most of the brief existence they believe humans are allowed.” Hesse illustrated the loving tolerance of atheists, and their acceptance for differing opinions and views. “‘I’m opposed to the illusion that there are really many difference between atheists at all,'” attendee Don Wharton was quoted as saying. “After all,” Hesse added, “they are here to celebrate the things that bind them together rather than the things that separate them.” What binds them together? Victimhood, according to Hesse. “Most of them have been told, at one point or another, that they are going to hell,” Hesse noted, “which, when you think about it, is a fairly pointless threat to an atheist, like warning someone that you’re sending them to Narnia.” Like this article? Eminem’s Recovery Dominates Billboard 200

Miley Cyrus’ Can’t Be Tamed debuts at #3, behind Drake’s Thank Me Later. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images Guess who’s back? Eminem is notching his sixth #1 album in a row with Recovery , which sold more than 741,000 copies last week. Those numbers dwarfed the figures for the all of the rest of the top 10 on next week’s Billboard 200 albums chart, as Slim Shady put up the best first-week numbers since 2008, far surpassing year’s other big debuts (Drake, Lady Antebellum, Sade). Proving once again that despite the album’s early leak, his fans will still come out to support the Detroit MC, Em’s massive haul pushes last week’s #1, Drake ‘s Thank Me Later down to #2. Sales for Drake’s debut cratered by 65 percent to 157,000, but the melodic Young Money MC still passed the gold mark in just two weeks, according to numbers provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Miley Cyrus had a rough landing for her more mature Can’t Be Tamed, which comes in at #3 on sales of 102,000, less than half of what 2008’s Breakout did in its debut week (371,000). And though he still hasn’t reached his goal of snagging a #1 debut on the U.S. charts, metal legend Ozzy Osbourne ‘s latest solo effort, Scream, lands at #4 after moving 81,000 copies. It’s followed at #6 by the chart bow from the Roots ‘ long-in-the-works How I Got Over (51,000). In a relatively slow week on the charts, the rest of the top 10 include: Now 34 (#5, 55,000), Jack Johnson ‘s To the Sea (#7, 44,000), Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 (#8, 43,000), Sarah McLachlan ‘s Laws of Illusion (#9, 38,000) and the soundtrack to “Eclipse” (#10, 38,000). Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ‘ Mojo crashes down nine spots in week two to #11, as sales dipped by 74 percent to 33,000. After 24 weeks in the top 10, Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now has dropped to #12 on sales of 32,000. Meanwhile, Christina Aguilera ‘s Bionic continues to struggle, as the singer’s latest slips out of the top 10 after just three weeks, dropping to #22 as sales trailed off by 54 percent to 18,000. One of Aguilera’s collaborators, singer Sia , debuts at #37 with We Are Born (11,000), while soul mama Macy Gray is right behind at #38 with Sellout (11,000). As the world marked the one-year anniversary of his death, Michael Jackson ‘s Number Ones collection rockets up more than 50 spots to #42 on sales of just under 10,000 (one of several Jackson titles to march back up the charts this week). Drake’s Thank Me Later Nears Half A Mil In Billboard Debut

Katy Perry, Drake and Eminem dominate the iTunes charts. By Gil Kaufman Drake Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Though he failed to join mentor Lil Wayne in the one milli club in his first week on the charts, there’s no shame in Drake ‘s game, as the Canadian rapper’s debut studio album, Thank Me Later will easily hit #1 on the Billboard 200 with sales of nearly 447,000. That total was good enough to earn Drizzy the third-best chart debut of 2010 (behind Lady Antebellum and Sade). He bested the week’s other newcomers, veteran rock act Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers , whose blues-inflected Mojo was far behind at #2 with 125,000, and fellow Canadian Sarah McLachlan , who returns to the charts with Laws of Illusion, hitting #3 with 94,000 in sales. The fourth slot is taken up by Now 34, which sold 88,000, meaning Drake sold more than the rest of the top five combined, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. There were no other debuts in the top 10, which undergoes a bit of shuffling: Jack Johnson ‘s To the Sea (#5, 68,000), the “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” soundtrack (#6, 55,000, down 63 percent), Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 (#7, 47,000), Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now (#8, 40,000), Christina Aguilera ‘s Bionic (#9, 40,000, down 64 percent in week two) and Glee: The Music — Journey to Regionals (#10, 39,000), which plummeted by 75 percent from last week’s #1 showing. Further down the line, tattooed Jersey rockers the Gaslight Anthem notch their best-ever chart debut with American Slang, which lit it up at #16 on sales of 27,000. The first new disc in 20 years from reunited new-wave spud rockers Devo , Something for Everybody, debuts at #30 (14,000). The solo debut from Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy takes a hard tumble in week two, as Lazarus sinks 42 slots to #67 as sales dropped off by 57 percent to 7,000. The new album from Swedish pop singer Robyn , Body Talk Pt. 1, slides into the top 100 at #97 (5,000). In case you doubted whether he still had it, Eminem rockets to the #2 position on this week’s iTunes album charts after only one day on shelves. Slim Shady’s Recovery nearly bested Drake’s Thank Me Later , which managed to hold onto the #1 slot, according to charts provided by iTunes, which does not release sales figures. The one-two finish by the rappers pushes last week’s iTunes #1 album, Glee: The Music, Journey to Regionals , down to #4, as another newcomer, McLachlan’s Laws of Illusion , slipped in at #3. Johnson’s To the Sea slipped one to #5, while Petty’s Mojo debuted at #6, and the rankings were filled out by the “Twilight” soundtrack, B.o.B. ‘s B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray, Glee: The Music, Vol. 3: Showstoppers and Gaslight Anthem’s Slang , which debuted at #10. On the iTunes singles chart, things were mostly unchanged, as Katy Perry held on at #1 with “California Gurls,” followed by the same suspects as last week: B.o.B. with “Airplanes,” Usher with “OMG,” Travie McCoy with “Billionaire” and Eminem’s “Not Afraid.” Climbing up to #6 was Mike Posner ‘s “Not Afraid,” followed by Ke$ha with “Your Love Is My Drug,” 3OH!3’s “My First Kiss,” the Black Eyed Peas ‘ “Rock That Body” and Drake’s “Find Your Love” at #10. Look for things to get blown out next week, as Eminem’s Recovery vies for the top with Miley Cyrus ‘ Can’t Be Tamed . Also in stores are new albums from Ozzy Osbourne , the Roots , Sia , Macy Gray , Cyndi Lauper , the Chemical Brothers and Keith Sweat . REVIEW: Ondine Captivates With Magic and Mastery

Long before “glamour” was a word applied all too casually to movie stars and red-carpet gowns, it was a term used to denote an enchantment or spell, a cobwebby thing that could either lull a human being into a woozy dream state or suddenly make him feel fully and bracingly alive. Neil Jordan’s modern-day Irish fairy tale Ondine works that kind of glamour, at first offering us the illusion of pure, stolid ordinariness — to the point of being, quite literally, gray — only to shift, before our eyes, into something darkly glittering and spectacular. The magic of Ondine is all beneath the surface, a shimmery school of fish that you can never be fully sure you glimpsed, but whose existence you don’t for an instant doubt. Maybe all you see is a silvery flash, but that’s enough.

The rest is here:

Flavor Flav, Meat Loaf Team Up For ‘WWE Raw’

Rapper and rocker appeared on show Monday with Randy Orton and R-Truth, the rapping wrestler. By Kyle Anderson Flavor Flav Photo: MTV News Over its long history, professional wrestling has always had a deep connection to the world of music. Cyndi Lauper helped get the WWE on MTV, Alice Cooper appeared in the corner of Jake “The Snake” Roberts at WrestleMania III, and the likes of Snoop Dogg and Jewel have served as recent guest hosts on the organization’s flagship Monday night program “Raw.” And a very odd tag team came together Monday night to share hosting duties, as hip-hop star and reality TV icon Flavor Flav co-hosted the show, live from the Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh, with epic rocker Meat Loaf . Following an opening promo from WWE star Randy Orton, Meat Loaf came out near the top of the show to remind the wrestler (and the viewing audience) that he has a new album out today called Hang Cool Teddy Bear and wanted one of his new tunes to be Orton’s new entrance music. He sang a few bars a cappella, but for his trouble, Meat received an RKO (a sort of jumping neck-breaker that Orton uses as his finishing move) and spent the remainder of the segment unconscious (or at least giving the illusion that he was — it is wrestling, after all). Flav had a slightly better night. He was introduced a few segments later at the side of R-Truth, the rapping wrestler. Truth and Flav traded catchphrases (the former’s being “What’s up?” while the latter’s was, of course, “Yeah boy!”). Flav stayed in Truth’s corner while he performed his match with William Regal and unfortunately provided him little support when he was attacked mid-match by the Colon Brothers. Later, Flav had a backstage conversation with wrestlers Santino Marella (a comedic Italian stereotype) and Vladimir Kozlov (an angry Russian stereotype). Santino tried to get Flav and Koslov to get together as a tag team, to which Kozlov wasn’t receptive. They were interrupted by William Regal, who tried to show off his rapping skills by attempting to rhyme about Parliament. Sadly, Meat and Flav never had any sort of overlapping segments, which would have made for delightfully strange television. The surreality continues next week on “Raw” when astronaut, former “Dancing With the Stars” contestant and MTV icon Buzz Aldrin will take the microphone and host the show live from Toronto.
