New Yorkers Celebrate ‘Groundbreaking’ Gay Marriage Passage

‘This couldn’t have come at a better time,’ says Gay Pride Week participant outside the Stonewall Inn. By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker Photo: Spencer Platt/Getty Images NEW YORK — With the historic passing of the same marriage equality bill in New York State on Friday night, the streets of the city have since been flooded with excited members of the LGBT community and other supporters on what just happens to be Gay Pride Week. Crowds of people have continued to drop by the Stonewall Inn, the famous site that has come to be known as the birthplace of the world’s gay rights movement following the infamous “Stonewall riots” that followed a police raid on the bar in 1969. Erin Healy of Albany, New York, recalled the groundbreaking moment. “I was with my friends last night and everyone was like, ‘The bill’s going to get passed!’ So we were like, ‘Turn on the news!’ and then all of a sudden it was like, ’29 to 33, it’s passed!’ ” “I just think this is such a groundbreaking moment in gay history,” expressed 21-year-old Brianna McDonald. “This vote was so important to the young crowd because it actually gives us something to look forward to, to get married if we want to.” “We are in the gayest part of town!” laughed Tony Benninelli of Queens, who was out with his friends in the West Village celebrating Gay Pride. “This couldn’t have come at a better time.” Jesse Kissel was especially keen on noting the part that both the Stonewall Inn and New York City played when it came to this epic moment. “This is where it all started,” he smiled. “This was where the revolution began, where people started realizing that we need rights and privileges.” The passing of the act gave Miami resident Jorge Orobitg a new hope for his own state. “New York is a big state,” he said, “so that means we’re heading in the right direction.” ( Read how California residents reacted to the news. ) “Hopefully, this will sprout a nationwide thing,” Erin Healy said. “It’s just something ridiculous to me that it’s taken even this long to happen.” Share your reactions to New York’s same-sex marriage bill on Facebook. New York’s Same Sex Marriage Bill Gives Hope To California Residents

‘California needs to catch up,’ one gay-marriage supporter says. By Kara Warner Photo: Spencer Platt/Getty Images LOS ANGELES — As the celebrations continued in New York on Saturday (June 25) for the passage of the same-sex marriage bill , many Americans were just waking up to and learning of the news. Expressing similar ecstatic emotions to those expressed by New Yorkers, many California residents spoke to MTV News about their enthusiasm for the bill’s passage. “I think it’s the next step for states,” John Stoeckly told MTV News after New York became the sixth and most populous state to legalize same-sex marriage. “I think people should be happy about it. I think California is probably going to be the next state that makes that step.” “You love who you love, you can’t really help that,” Samantha Capatosto said of her support for same-sex marriage. “I think it mean that they don’t let people get married, my aunt can’t get married, and I’m sad about that. She lives in Florida.” “You can’t help who you love, be with who you want to be with!” Jackie Mossberg chimed in. Both young ladies, along with friend Lauren Vigil, agreed that they feel like same-sex marriage will soon be legal nation-wide. “All the states are slowly letting gay marriage become legal,” Vigil said. “I think [California is] kind of stubborn,” Capatosto added. “But maybe it will happen.” California courts made same-sex marriage legal in 2008 before the passage of Proposition 8 that year negated the ruling. The law has been overturned by the U.S. District court and is now pending a decision by the California Supreme Court. California resident Orlando Soria was equally excited about the news, but offered a more cautiously optimistic opinion. “It seems like it keeps going back and forth between things being legal and not legal,” he pointed out. “New York is sort of a vanguard state, so it seems that the rest of the country will eventually go that direction, but we have no idea. In a year they could be like, ‘Oh that’s illegal again.’ Part of me thinks it’s very exciting for now, especially after Prop 8, but it’s hard to get fully excited about this stuff because you never know what’s going to happen. I don’t know. I should just be excited, but at the same time I’m excited with trepidation.” Soria went on to say that the most surprising aspect of the news was learning that the bill was passed for all of New York State, not just New York City. “New York State is kind of conservative. I lived in upstate New York for four years, and it was very different from the city,” he said. “That’s amazing to think that crazy conservative New York state passed something that California has yet to. It’s nuts.” Rebekah Nazarian’s response to the news was that “California needs to catch up. Big ups to New York for taking the lead in being the biggest state to allow same sex marriage, ” she said. “This is one time I don’t mind being a follower, and I hope soon too California can be proud of the same beautiful accomplishment.” Share your reactions to New York’s same-sex marriage bill on Facebook. Bruno Mars Fans Brave Rain For ‘Today’ Performance

Mars performed ‘Lazy Song,’ ‘Just the Way You Are’ and more at ‘Today’ show performance in Rockefeller Center. By Danielle Genet Bruno Mars performs on “Today” on Friday Photo: Jemal Countess/Getty Images NEW YORK — Rainy, misty weather did not stop Bruno Mars “hooligans” from attending his concert at the Plaza at Rockefeller Center early Friday morning (June 24) for the “Today” show. Fans came from all around the country, some even camping out since 10 p.m. the previous night, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Grammy Award winner. Mars didn’t disappoint, performing his hits “The Lazy Song,” “Runaway Baby” and “Just the Way You Are” off of his debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans. “He’s an amazing singer, performer. [His Grammy win] makes me like him even more,” fan Kathy Ramos, who had been waiting since 1 a.m., said. Fans created hundreds of homemade signs hoping to catch Mars’ eye. Megan Carroll and Kayla Dee, both 16, lined up late Thursday night and were excited to see Mars perform. “We love him. We saw him a month ago and we needed to go again. The rain’s annoying, but it’s definitely worth it,” Carroll said. Munzath Ashraf and Sundus Arain, both 18, arrived around 4 a.m. for the show. “We love Bruno Mars and we want to make sure we get in,” Ashraf said. More than 2,000 fans arrived early this morning, surprising local police and even host Ann Curry, who proclaimed this concert was the “biggest crowd of the year” for the “Today” show concert series. The line to get inside the barricades wrapped around at least three blocks. But the limited space and the massive crowd left many fans unable to see the show. Even fans who had waited for hours weren’t able to get inside the barricade. Both Ashraf and Arain ended up leaving even before they saw Mars. “We are really disappointed. The stage was just too low to the ground and people were crying and trying to jump on our shoulders,” Ashraf explained. Mars hit the stage sleekly dressed in a black Dolce & Gabbana suit with a hot pink shirt and black tie along with dark shades, but without his signature short-brimmed fedora hat. The singer started his set with “The Lazy Song,” which really got the crowd amped. After his first song, Matt Lauer and Mars talked for a few minutes and commented on how much larger the crowd was today as compared to his last appearance on the show eight months ago. Mars, who continues to gain notoriety and success as a solo artist, told Lauer, “They’re making signs for me. I’m just happy I’m here. I really got lucky.” When asked if he plans to keep writing for other artists (Mars has previously written for Cee-Lo Green, B.o.B and Travie McCoy), Mars joked, “Absolutely not. I’m done,” and then added “Of course.” For his next song, Mars sang “Runaway Baby” and playfully danced along with his band. To close the set, Mars sang a jazzy rendition of “Just the Way You Are,” with the whole crowd singing along. And as if on cue, the rain really started to come as soon as Mars ended his set. ‘Hobbit’ Casts Evangeline Lilly In New Role

Former ‘Lost’ star will play new character Tauriel, the Woodland Elf, director Peter Jackson says. By Josh Wigler Evangeline Lilly Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Evangeline Lilly already had a strong connection to Middle-earth thanks to her former relationship with “Lost” co-star Dominic Monaghan — better known to Tolkien fans as “Lord of the Rings”‘ very own Merry Brandybuck, of course — but now she’s strengthening those ties all on her own. Lilly is the latest addition to “The Hobbit,” director Peter Jackson announced on his Facebook page over the weekend. The actress, who starred on “Lost” as fugitive-turned-adoptive-mother Kate Austen throughout the show’s six-season run, will play “a new character” in the two-part “Lord of the Rings” prequel, which is slated to hit theaters in December 2012 and December 2013. “Evangeline Lilly will be playing a new character — the Woodland Elf, Tauriel,” Jackson revealed of her casting. “Her name means ‘daughter of Mirkwood’ and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.) What is not a secret is how talented and compelling an actress Evangeline is; we are thrilled and excited she will be the one to bring our first true Sylvan Elf to life.” Jackson also announced that Barry Humphries has joined the cast as the Goblin King. “Barry is perhaps best known for his business and social connections as the longtime manager of Dame Edna Everage,” he wrote. “He has also been an ardent supporter of the rather misunderstood and unfairly maligned Australian politician Sir Les Patterson. However, in his spare time, Barry is also a fine actor, and we’re looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves.” These are just the latest developments in a string of recent casting moves on the “Hobbit” front. Last week, Jackson filled out two of the story’s most important roles, Smaug the Dragon and Bard the Bowman, with actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Luke Evans , respectively. It’s a “Sherlock Holmes” reunion for Cumberbatch, whose onscreen Watson, Martin Freeman, holds the titular role in “The Hobbit.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hobbit.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Britney Spears’ ‘I Wanna Go’ Premieres Next Wednesday

Chris Marrs Piliero-directed clip will meet deadline for 2011 VMA consideration. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Max Morse/Getty Images Britney Spears is ready to unleash her “I Wanna Go” music video. The Chris Marrs Piliero-directed clip will hit the Web on Wednesday at 6 a.m. ET. This is the third single off Spears’ Femme Fatale, following up “Hold It Against Me” and “Till the World Ends.” This date is particularly important as it means that Spears just makes the June 24 deadline for the video to qualify for a 2011 Video Music Award. The video was shot late last month in the Los Angeles area. Little else is known about the actual concept for the clip, but given the song’s lyrical content, it seems that dancing will be featured. Piliero recently worked with Ke$ha on her cheeky “Blow” video. He’s also worked with indie acts like the Black Keys and pop rockers like Yellowcard. On Thursday, he gave fans an update on the video via Twitter . “Hey Brit fans … whenever I get deep into a project, I tend to not do much tweeting, so let’s do a quick catch up … finished editing the ‘I Wanna Go’ music video … love it … met up with @britneyspears … we watched it together … she loved it …,” he wrote. “Stoked …” Produced by Max Martin and Shellback, “I Wanna Go” is a funky dance track about going out, letting loose and having a great time, regardless of the consequences. On the song, Spears coos, “Lately I’ve been stuck imaginin’/ What I wanna do and what I really think, time to blow out/ Be a little inappropriate ’cause I know that everybody’s/ Thinkin’ it when the lights out/ Shame on me/ To need release/ Un-uncontrollably.” Related Videos Britney Spears: I Am The Femme Fatale Related Artists Britney Spears

Lady Gaga Is ‘Just A Normal Girl’ … On 25-Inch Heels

As Born This Way rules the charts another week, producer DJ White Shadow says Gaga hasn’t changed since they first met. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images As Lady Gaga holds onto the #1 spot on Billboard, for the second straight week, with her chart-topping album Born This Way, DJ White Shadow is no doubt enjoying the success. When we caught up with the producer recently, he told us how their collaboration started off as a long-distance relationship. Back in 2009, White Shadow was approached to work on a co-headlining tour for Lady Gaga and Kanye West. After their Fame Kills Tour was canceled , though, Shadow was asked to focus on the next phase in Gaga’s career. The producer and the pop star had already built quite a foundation by the time they finally met in person in the summer of 2010. And while Shadow wasn’t completely sure what the encounter would be like, he had some clue that they would get along famously. “We had talked for so long before [we met in person]. We had talked on the phone or talked on iChat, in emails; I think we kind of knew about each other’s personalities,” he told MTV News. “I mean, obviously, I was excited to meet her. I felt like we were long-distance pen pals.” What he found out is that despite all of the unusual costumes, Gaga is a pretty regular 25-year-old. “She’s, like, super cool. I think everybody gets weirded out by ‘Oh, she looks so crazy on those 25-inch heels and the hair-bow,’ or whatever’s going on at the time, but she’s just a normal girl. Like, she’s funny. She’s really funny and super cool.” Shadow worked closely with Gaga and BTW musical director Fernando Garibay to create a pop album that would push the envelope. The DJ/producer worked on heavy-hitting tracks like “Born This Way,” “Government Hooker,” “Americano” and “Bloody Mary,” to name a few. So, how is Gaga as a boss, we wanted to know. “She’s the best boss. She’s a great friend,” he said. “She’s amazing. “Here’s the funny thing about this: People ask that question but I’m telling you, ’cause everyone wants to [know], ‘Does she say something to you as her friend or someone you know that she writes music with that she doesn’t say to us? Does she talk about New York in a way that she wouldn’t have done into a camera?’ And the answer is no,” he explained. “I’ve never seen her say something that was disingenuous.” Bottom line: Gaga is always Gaga. “The stories that she tells, the way that she looks on camera and the way that she acts … that’s how she is. That’s her character. She is the same.” In fact, like most New Yorkers, Gaga loves to shop for a good bargain. “I was walking down the street in front of the studio one day and she’s shopping for $20 shoes. She’s New York. We’ve been to dinner a couple times … just go to normal restaurants. It’s New York, it’s her home, right?” he said. “So, I’ve definitely heard all the stories that she’s telling. She’s very open.” What’s your favorite Born This Way track? Tell us in the comments! Related Videos Lady Gaga: Inside The Outside Related Artists Lady Gaga

Emma Watson ‘Couldn’t Compete’ With Pattinson/Lautner Kiss

‘Harry Potter’ star tells MTV News that all the Movie Awards smooching had her feeling left out. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Emma Watson at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday Photo: Steve Granitz/Getty Images Aside from the much-anticipated premiere of a new “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” clip during Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards, it was a pretty quiet night for Team Potter, who sat and watched as “Twilight” reaped (nearly) all the awards , besting “Deathly Hollows, Part 1” for Best Movie, Best Male and Female Performance, Best Fight Scene and Best Kiss. In fact, “Potter” took home just one bucket of Golden Popcorn — Tom Felton’s turn as Draco Malfoy earned him Best Villain honors — and as if that weren’t bad enough, it was the stars of “Twilight” who garnered the lion’s share of the headlines too, as everything from Robert Pattinson’s lip-lock with co-star Taylor Lautner to the squeeing reactions to the “Breaking Dawn, Part 1” trailer burned up search engines in the hours following the show. So you could imagine what it must have been like for the “Harry Potter” stars who were actually on hand for the Movie Awards — like, for example, Emma Watson, who not only lost Best Female Performance to Kristen Stewart, but didn’t even get to see the kiss between Pattinson and Lautner. “I missed this moment! I came out, and they were like, ‘Rob just missed Taylor!’ and I was like, ‘Damn!’ ” Watson told MTV News’ Josh Horowitz following the show. “I was still backstage [after introducing the ‘Deathly Hallows, Part 2’] clip, so I missed it. But, I mean, yeah, good on them!” And as if missing out on the kiss-to-end-all-kisses wasn’t bad enough, the whole lip-locking theme of the night had Watson feeling left out. Seems she was the only person who didn’t have someone to kiss. “I mean, I was really up against it. Kristen [Stewart] had two kisses, and Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman making out,” she laughed. “I mean, I couldn’t really compete!” MTV News has all of the highlights from the 2011 MTV Movie Awards . Scotty McCreery’s Pals Thought ‘American Idol’ Was ‘A Far-Fetched Idea’

‘Scotty is a genuinely nice kid, a good Southern boy,’ one classmate tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Tami Katzoff Scotty McCreery performs during his hometown visit in Garner, North Carolina Photo: Steve Exum/Getty Images There are so many unusual things about “American Idol” finalist Scotty McCreery: his signature microphone technique, his preternatural ease onstage and, oh yeah, the fact that’s he’s both a kick-ass baseball pitcher for his high school team, the Garner Trojans, and one of the key members of Garner Magnet High School’s vocal ensemble, Die Meistersingers. Alec Hulmes, 17, has known McCreery since preschool, and they’ve lived in the same neighborhood and played baseball together their whole lives. On the eve of Scotty’s top-three performance, he told MTV News that ever since they were in elementary school, he remembers McCreery singing Elvis tunes on the bus while doing that “little eye thing.” And while they were amused, Hulmes said they often complain, “Dude, Scotty, shut up for one second! Just shut up! Stop singing!” But since McCreery’s epic run on “Idol,” things have changed. “Now every time he sings, it’s like, ‘Go ahead, Scotty, keep going, keep going!’ ” Hulmes laughed. The school’s “blue crew” started out as a student cheering section for football and basketball games, but over the past few months, it has transformed into an all-Scotty cheering section. The town of 27,000 just outside Raleigh, North Carolina, has also gotten fully behind their favorite son, with billboards, signs, banners and viewing parties. Garner Magnet High School student Jay Booth, 17, who has known Scotty since freshman year, said that these days, you can’t walk 15 feet in town or at their school without seeing some McCreery-boosting paraphernalia. There’s a packed-to-the-rafters viewing party in the school gym every Thursday night and announcements throughout the week reminding students to vote for Scotty. Check out Haley Reinhart and Lauren Alaina ‘s hometown visits! “I think Scotty is a genuinely nice kid, a good Southern boy,” Booth said. “He always cares about everyone else and is respectful to others.” Before he was picked for the show, Scotty had talked to his pals about maybe doing “Idol” one day. “We didn’t think anything of it, because it seemed like such a farfetched idea,” Booth admitted. Once McCreery did try out and made the show, his teammates saw the huge reaction and realized that it could turn into a very big deal. Yes, there’s the fame and the TV love and the potential recording contract. But preschool friend Kyle Tobin, 18, said there’s another fringe benefit that would warm the heart of any 17-year-old boy. “He used to joke about not being able to pull women,” Tobin said. “But [ when he came home last weekend ], all you could hear was women’s voices.” He might seem like a quiet, unassuming Southern boy on the show, but Booth said during football and basketball games, Scotty was always the loudest fan, yelling his support for the home team and ripping off his shirt even in cold weather. “He’s normally a pretty quiet kid if you don’t know him very well,” Booth said. “So whenever you see him at a football game screaming at the other team, it’s pretty funny.” Considering that he’s already heard some original compositions that were “far beyond” Scotty’s 17 years, Booth predicted that if his buddy wins (actually, when he wins), McCreery will make a true roots country record that would stick to the style he’s fostered on “Idol.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” every Thursday at noon on MTV.com for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty! Lady Gaga Apologizes For ‘Retarded’ Comment

‘To anyone that was hurt, please know that it was furiously unintentional,’ singer says. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Larry Busacca/Getty Images When Lady Gaga dropped “Born This Way” earlier this year, the tune immediately drew comparisons to Madonna’s “Express Yourself.” Shortly after the song was released, Gaga shared with the world that the pop queen liked the song and gave the pop princess her seal of approval. Now Gaga has once again been asked about the comparisons in a new interview with NME . And she didn’t seem pleased by the line of questioning. “That’s retarded. If you put the songs next to each other, side by side, the only similarities are the chord progression. It’s the same one that’s been in disco music for the last 50 years. Just because I’m the first f—ing artist in 25 years to think of putting it on Top 40 radio, it doesn’t mean I’m a plagiarist, it means I’m f—ing smart. Sorry.” The issue hit newsstands on Tuesday and by late Wednesday night the singer had issued an apology to her fans about her choice of words when defending herself and the chart-topping tune. “I consider it part of my life’s work and music to push the boundaries of love and acceptance. My apologies for not speaking thoughtfully,” she said in a statement to Perezhilton.com . “To anyone that was hurt, please know that it was furiously unintentional. An honest mistake requires honesty to make.” She then went on to quote some lyrics from the feel-good dance track: “Whether life’s disabilities left you outcast, bullied or teased, rejoice and love yourself today.” What do you think of Gaga’s apology for using the “R” word?
