Johnny Depp Eying Paul Revere, Dante And More

‘Pirates’ star is reportedly lining up several new films, including ‘The Night Stalker.’ By Terri Schwartz Johnny Depp Photo: Jorge Herrera/Getty Images Though he certainly could happily retire on his “Pirates” loot, never let it be said that Johnny Depp is not one of the hardest-working men in Hollywood. This week, news broke of three new potential Depp projects in early discussions. Though he has commitments to Tim Burton’s “Dark Shadows” remake and Gore Verbinski’s “The Lone Ranger” update at the moment, and has said he would consider future installments of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise , it sounds like Depp is trying to keep himself busy for the foreseeable future. Deadline reports that two of the movies are being set up with Disney (Depp’s go-to company these days). The first is a feature film version of “The Night Stalker,” a 1970s TV horror movie and series that tells the story of tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak after he stumbles upon a series of supernatural killers. The second is an untitled Paul Revere film that Depp is working on with “Batman Forever” writers Lee and Janet Batchler. It would follow Revere during the 24-hour time period in which he made his legendary midnight ride to warn the revolutionaries that the British were coming. Depp would potentially star as the lead in both films. And earlier this week, “Miral” director Julian Schnabel let slip the other bit of Depp news during an interview with The Playlist , when he stated that the “Pirates” star had approached him about an adaptation of “In the Hand of Dante.” Depp had purchased film rights to the book by Nick Tosches several years ago and asked Schnabel to consider it as his next project. It’s not clear if Depp would star in the movie. “I’m not going to make it for a couple of years,” Schnabel said of the adaptation of the novel, which weaves the story of the 14th century poet and that of a contemporary writer caught up in the potential black market sale of Dante’s “Divine Comedy” manuscript. “We’re gonna work on writing it, developing it. We didn’t sign anything. It’s just something Johnny asked me to read, and I think it’s a great book, so maybe you should read it. It’s pretty beautiful. It’s about everything.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Related Photos The Evolution Of: Johnny Depp

More Kelly Clarkson Songs Leak Online

‘What Doesn’t Kill You,’ ‘I Forgive You’ and ‘Dumb + Dumb =U’ hit the Internet over the weekend, following earlier leak of ‘Let Me Down.’ By Gil Kaufman Kelly Clarkson Photo: Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images Kelly Clarkson fans got a big sneak preview of the singer’s upcoming album over the weekend when three tracks reportedly slated for her fifth effort leaked onto the Internet. The leaks came less than a week after another never-before-heard song, the rocking “Let Me Down,” popped up online amid rumors that it could be the first single from the still untitled follow-up to 2009’s return to form All I Ever Wanted . Though the audio tracks were quickly pulled down, a number of sites that got a listen described the songs as very different from the angsty “Let Me Down.” One, “What Doesn’t Kill You,” reportedly features the lines, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger/ Stand a little taller/ Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone.” The Idolator blog described that song as a Pink-style empowerment anthem. Another leaked song, titled “Forgive You,” is a peace offering to a person from her past, in which Clarkson sings, “We were just a couple of kids trying to figure out how to live, doing it our way/ No shame, no blame, ’cause the damage is done.” She’s back to her old tricks in “Dumb + Dumb = U,” a slap at an unnamed ex who clearly rubbed her the wrong way. The song reportedly has the same pop-rock vibe as Clarkson’s smash hit “Since U Been Gone.” In the latest effort, she gets her revenge in lyrics such as “It ain’t rocket science/ I may not be Einstein, but I know that dumb plus dumb equals you!” A spokesperson for Clarkson could not be reached for comment at press time to confirm the legitimacy of the songs or if they are slated to be included on the album. According to an update from Clarkson earlier this year, the album is due in the fall and she recorded the final tune in late February. Songwriter Claude Kelly told MTV News in March that the delays in the album’s release are tied to efforts by Clarkson’s label to ensure the album is set up correctly. “They want to make sure that the arena is clean for Kelly Clarkson’s return , ’cause when she comes back, she always comes back pretty big,” he said. “They want to make sure when her first single comes out, there’s nothing out there that’s competing with it. I don’t know for sure, but Kelly always does it big, so when it comes out, the fans will be happy and she’ll sing her butt off and it’ll be good times.” Related Artists Kelly Clarkson

Rebecca Black Set To Drop New Single, EP

Follow-up to smash ‘Friday, titled ‘My Moment,’ will be released July 18. By Jocelyn Vena Rebecca Black Photo: Ethan Miller/Getty Images Thanks to her ubiquitous hit “Friday,” Rebecca Black quickly went from YouTube sensation to starring in a Katy Perry video for that singer’s equally ubiquitous hit “Last Friday Night.” Now Black is ready to take her career to the next level. She’ll release a new song, “My Moment,” on July 18, according to The Hollywood Reporter The song was written by Brandon “Blue” Hamilton (Justin Bieber) and Quinton Tolbert and the production credits include Charlton Pettus. The video is less kitschy (but perhaps just as literal) than her “Friday” video. It will include footage of her attending red-carpet events and receiving an award at her junior high school. It will “tell the story of her sudden rise to fame,” according to a statement. “It’s a fairy tale story, but it happened in real life.” Black is also working on finishing up her five-track EP, which will be released in August. “We’re thinking about it; we have so many different options right now. We’re trying to decide which route we should take,” Black told MTV News earlier this year about her career plans and following up her viral smash. “I really like Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Katy Perry , Selena Gomez; all just the fun upbeat stuff, teenager songs,” she said of her musical inspirations. “My dream duet would be Justin Bieber. Even just doing something with Taylor Swift, or any of my favorite artists would be so cool.” Are you looking forward to Rebecca Black’s next single? Tell us in the comments! Jay-Z Shares Sneak Peek Of Watch The Throne

Hov played more than a dozen tracks from his collabo with Kanye for MTV News on Thursday night. By Alvin Blanco Jay-Z Photo: Scott Wintrow/Getty Images NEW YORK — Jay-Z and Kanye West’s forthcoming album may be called Watch the Throne, but soon enough fans will be listening, not just looking, and it will have been worth the wait. On Thursday night, MTV News was among the shortlist of media outlets invited to get an early listen to power duo’s collaborative project. The listening session was held in the Mercer Hotel, where the New York Post previously reported that parts of the album were recorded. Though it was originally set to begin at 8 p.m., Jay-Z walked into the hotel lobby closer to 9 (word is he was at a Yankees game hoping to see Derek Jeter get his 3,000th hit). The group of journalists followed the rapper up to a suite that had been transformed into a recording studio. Seated in the rear of the room, wearing a Yankees snap-back hat and crisp, white shell-toe Adidas, Hova balanced a MacBook Pro in his lap. After asking those in attendance to introduce themselves, he got right into playing selections from the album, loudly. Standout tracks included a pair of songs that feature Odd Future crooner Frank Ocean . Jay-Z relayed that he reached out to Ocean after hearing his Nostalgia, Ultra mixtape and wanted him to contribute to his next solo album. After their initial work went well — Ocean appears on one of two songs Jay-Z revealed he has recorded for the solo LP — Hova invited the crooner to get down on Watch the Throne too. The only other guest on the album is Beyonc

Kanye West Lights Up Superdome At Essence Fest

Yeezy performs a bombastic headlining set on Saturday in New Orleans. By Rebecca Thomas Kanye West performs at the 2011 Essence Fest on Saturday Photo: Erika Goldring/Getty Images NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana — Early on in Kanye West ‘s headlining set at the 2011 Essence Music Festival on Saturday Night, the Chicago MC stood on a raised platform suspended high above the cheering crowd. As he spit “Dark Fantasy,” the hook “Can we get much higher?” seemed a particularly apt way to describe not only his literal skyward stance at the New Orleans Superdome , but also what was to come that night. Yeezy was already knee-deep into career-defining classics like “Jesus Walks” “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and “Diamonds are Forever,” when he told the elated NOLA fest he was “just getting started.” Rocking a white blazer, topped by a thick tangle of gold chains, and a pair of jeans and sneakers, the 34-year-old rapper bounded across the stage like a hyperactive teen, but there was no mistaking that West is a megastar, the “college dropout” who has more than made G.O.O.D. on his childhood dreams. As a small army of classical dancers — dressed in a variation of the phoenix costume worn by Selita Ebanks’ bird in West’s short film “Runaway” — flanked him, Kanye launched into a bombastic rendition of “Power”; “Devil in a New Dress” and “Hell of a Life” followed as ‘Ye tucked into singles and cuts from last year’s platinum-plus opus My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Performing to a massive audience that came to its feet (and stayed there all night) to the strains of ‘Ye and Jay-Z’s “H.A.M.,” the Chi-town MC with a Nas flow touched on his recent scandals, explaining that he stopped granting press interviews after taking lashings from media and bloggers. But he wasn’t all rebellious rapper: He danced, sang along and laughed his way through an old-school medley of personally influential music, and the playlist jumped from Al Green to ’90s soul groups like Jodeci and Shai. And West also emphasized that he knew who had held him down when, as he laughed, he “had a little too much too drink” before storming the MTV VMA stage back in 2009. Yeezy repeatedly thanked the predominantly African-American crowd for standing by him before going on to a stirring, church-tinged rendition of “Gold Digger.” The songs felt big and anthemic; the stage and stands, for instance, were bathed in lights and lasers for “All of the Lights” and “Stronger,” respectively. As he bounced back and forth between hits from his discography, including his College Dropout debut and his introspective, Auto-Tuned 808s & Heartbreak, the weight of West’s musical success was apparent. If there is a handbook for how to headline an expansive show, West should write it. Concertgoers appeared awestruck at the sheer spectacle and scale of the show, mouths gaping when they weren’t shouting lyrics back at the energetic MC. For the finale “Act 3” (a title card projected onto oversize screens flashed the show’s three-part progression), a billowing white tent was spread across the stage. In cocoon-like fashion, the dancers re-emerged in black tutus; West clad in his signature red suit. As the rapper knocked out the mournful, tinkling opener of “Runaway” on his MPC machine, the ballerinas circled and Pusha T turned up for his verse. Still, as large and loud as the show felt, Yeezy’s closing was as subtle. After rapping a heartfelt “Hey Mama” on his knees, with a nod to his late mother, Donda West , the star and his band, dancers and DJ took a ballet-company-style bow and walked offstage as the stadium lights went up. Red Hot Chili Peppers Video ‘Crazier’ With Kreayshawn Calling Shots

MTV News spoke to director (and rapper) on the set of the Chili Peppers’ ‘The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie’ clip. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea and Anthony Kiedis (file) Photo: Karl Walter/Getty Images When MTV News first broke the news that up-and-coming “Gucci Gucci” rapper Kreayshawn had been tapped to direct the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” video , the reaction from most seemed to be “her?” Yes, despite the fact that she went to The Berkeley Digital Film Institute — and has directed clips for the likes of Lil B — most couldn’t believe that the Chili Peppers had gone with the Bay Area Based Goddess for the first video from their much-anticipated I’m With You album. But RHCP fans weren’t the only ones feeling that way: Turns out Kreayshawn couldn’t believe it either. “My manager hit me up. He was like, ‘Oh, Warner is looking for somebody to direct the new Red Hot Chili Peppers video. They want you to do a treatment.’ So at that time, I was like, ‘Oh sh–! I’m about to do it, ‘ ” Kreayshawn told MTV News on the set of the “Rain Dance” video earlier this week. “Later, I found out that [my treatment] was picked out of a whole bunch of them. … So I was like, ‘Oh, that makes it even crazier. ‘ I went to film school and stuff, but, like, I never thought it was going to translate into something this big.” Though she was overwhelmed, Kreayshawn said any doubts she had disappeared after speaking with RHCP frontman Anthony Kiedis and discovering that the two shared similar visions for the clip. “I talked to Anthony a couple times, and he was like, ‘I want to do a couple changes to the video,’ but all the changes he had were, like, stuff we were already doing with the video, like slow-motion and stuff. So I was like, ‘We’re dialed in,’ ” she said. “Everyone was completely ready and they came here, they’re excited, which makes me even happier. … There’s a good vibe everywhere.” Of course, while she was more than willing to speak about the vibe of the video, Kreayshawn didn’t want to reveal much about the actual plot — though she did say that, well, certain groups of the Chili Peppers’ fanbase will definitely be happy with the end result. “It’s got that organic feel, but it still gives the band a great shine and they look f—ing awesome, ” she laughed. “They are looking off the chain, man. Anthony’s in there looking like a swimsuit model.” What do you think about Kreay getting behind the lens for the Chili Peppers? Let us know in the comments! Jay-Z And Kanye’s Watch The Throne Is ‘Ready To Go’

‘They might put it out yesterday,’ G.O.O.D. Music’s CyHi the Prynce jokes to Sway on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Daniel Boczarski/Getty Images The anticipation for Jay-Z and Kanye West ‘s joint album Watch the Throne coupled with the lack of information surrounding the project has created the perfect storm for rumors. Earlier this month, The Source magazine reported that the album would be dropping July 4. With Independence Day coming in less than a week, those chances are looking as slim as the girl in Calvin Klein pants is. But on Wednesday’s (June 29) episode of “Rap Fix Live,” G.O.O.D. Music artist CyHi the Prynce did give fans a bit of hope. “They are ready to go. Right now, all the music and everything is done,” CyHi told Sway. “But you know my guy — we over here with [Kanye], so ‘Ye is gonna add his last little pizzazz, and it’s going to be ready for you guys soon.” On Tuesday, the Fourth of July speculation continued to swirl as AllHipHop.com ran a rumor report that said that the album will come Monday as a digital-only release to avoid leaks. CyHi would neither confirm nor deny that report, saying he wasn’t privy to that information. “I don’t know the business of the logistics of it,” he said, dodging the question with a veteran’s poise. “Those are the bosses. You never know what they gonna do and how they gonna put it out. They might put it out yesterday. “I don’t know. ‘Ye can do something, and he can just do it how he wanna do it,” CyHi continued. “He can just put it out tomorrow if he wanted to, and that’s what ‘Ye want to do.” Until then, we’ll continue to watch.
