Rihanna Raises A Glass To Fans In ‘Cheers’ Video

Avril Lavigne cameos in montage of celebrations off- and onstage. By James Dinh Rihanna Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/Getty Images Summer is coming to a close, but it looks like Rihanna is going to keep the party going for a little longer. On Friday (August 26), the pop force debuted the video for her celebratory tune “Cheers (Drink to That),” a behind-the-scenes concert montage with brief cameo appearances by Avril Lavigne , Jay-Z and Kanye West . Chanting fans kick off the almost-five minute clip, which cuts between candid footage of the songstress backstage before and after her shows, and enjoying the festivities during her recent trip to Barbados. Rocking some denim blue shorts, a colorful cropped top and sunglasses, Rihanna also gives fans a glimpse of her performance of the tune during her Loud tour set. “Cheers (Drink to That)” samples Avril Lavigne’s yodel from her 2002 hit “I’m With You,” so it’s only appropriate that the visual includes sporadic blink-of-the-eye appearances from the pop rocker horsing around by the pool. “It was really exciting because ‘I’m With You’ is one of my favorite songs that I’ve done, I always love performing it,” Lavigne said last year of being sampled on “Cheers.” “Cheers to the freaking weekend/ I drink to that, yeah yeah/ Oh, let the Jameson sink in/ I drink to that, yeah yeah/ Don’t let the bastards get you down/ Turn it around with another round/ There’s a party at the bar everybody put your glasses up and I drink to that,” Rihanna sings, almost casually, as she’s seen toasting fans and friends onstage and in bars. Hours after the debut, Rih took to Twitter to ask fans what they thought about the clip, writing, “CHEERS… U like??? #drinktothat #RihannaNavy I love yall forever!!!!! Keep making me proud!” The Rihanna Navy has been pushing for the singer to release “Cheers (Drink to That)” since the LP’s release, and there’s no denying that the Barbados beauty also has love for the song. “I love that song [‘Cheers’]. That is one of my favorite songs on the album. It makes you feel like celebrating,” Rihanna told MTV News last year. “It gives you a great feeling inside, like you want to go out and have a drink. … People can’t wait for the weekend.” Related Artists Avril Lavigne Rihanna

Lil Wayne Tour Evolves With ‘So Much’ New Music

‘He’s releasing song after song after song,’ musical director Gil Smith tells MTV News of evolving I Am Still Music Tour. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Lil Wayne is constantly evolving. From a 12-year-old kiddie MC, to the self-proclaimed “best rapper alive” to rock star and now R&B singer, Weezy has kept things interesting during the course of his 14-year career. His I Am Still Music Tour has been just as prolific, thanks to the mass amount of music he’s been releasing. And with his ninth solo album, Tha Carter IV, dropping at midnight after Sunday’s VMAs — where Wayne will also perform — concertgoers can expect some changes to the set list. “I think just in terms of the tour, we’ve been adding songs here and there,” Wayne’s musical director Gil Smith told MTV News. “You gotta understand with Wayne, there is so much music. I mean, we can talk about Tha Carter IV, and then we can sit down and have a different conversation about Sorry 4 the Wait, which was a whole different thing that he put out. So it’s so much music. Even when we’re on the road, he’s releasing song after song after song, so we got to kind of find ways to incorporate that as we go along.” When he and his Young Money compadres opened the tour in May in Providence Rhode Island, Wayne hadn’t yet released his fan-dedicated tape Sorry 4 the Wait, and Tha Carter IV was in release-date limbo. During the course of the concert run, which was extended through September, Wayne released the mixtape and a number of C4 singles. Smith said that by the time the tour wraps, the first show will be much different from the last. It’s not just the music, either. “It’s changed quite a bit. Now he’s skating around the stage, he has a skateboard trainer who’s out there with him,” Smith said. “He’s really into skateboarding, and he’s also into singing for the ladies. There’s a section of the tour that’s dedicated to that, and that’s how we kind of incorporated ‘How to Love,’ along with some other favorites.” Wayne will grace the stage this Sunday at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, and while Smith wouldn’t reveal what the YMCMB star has planned , he said fans can expect a Weezy they’ve never seen. “We’ve been brainstorming and taking from things that we put together on the road, so I think they can just expect a new-and-improved Wayne, a different Wayne,” he said. “You know, he always comes different: One day he’s a rock star, one day he’s a skater; he’s singing R&B. I think we can expect a little bit of everything in this performance.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Aaliyah: Celebrating Her Legacy, 10 Years Later

We unpacked vintage footage, including the ‘One in a Million’ singer’s 2001 MTV ‘Diary’ episode. By Rebecca Thomas Aaliyah in 2001 Photo: Evan Agostini/Getty Images In pop music, five years between albums can seem like 500. But on the eve of the release of her self-titled third LP on July 17, 2001, Aaliyah — with two multiplatinum discs nailed to her wall and a fawning fanbase patiently waiting on her — had her stilettos firmly planted in the pop-cultural soil; the 22-year-old’s grip on the game had only grown tighter since 1996’s sophomore smash, One in a Million. So that summer, the New York-born, Detroit-bred beauty took off on a dizzying promotional run for what she called her “most personal album” (“I’m hoping that people really feel me on this one,” she told MTV in an interview). Among the to-do’s dotting her datebook were in-store CD signings with fans, photo shoots for glossy fashion mags, appearances on shows like “Live With Regis and Kelly,” presenting with Diddy at the ’01 MTV Movie Awards and jet-lagged trips abroad to meet with foreign press. And MTV was there capturing it all for a special episode of the artist-narrated documentary series “Diary.” “I am truly blessed to wake up every morning and do something that I love. There’s nothing better than that,” she says in the epi. From age 15, when she dropped her 1994 debut, the mature-beyond-her-years Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number, Aaliyah had gotten to do exactly what she loved, as the bandana-rocking tomboy teen blossomed into a bewitching triple threat. While her untimely death, 10 years ago on Thursday (August 25) in a Bahamas plane crash , ended a bursting-at-the-seams career, fans still hum her infectious tunes , ape her slinky choreography and swoon over the catalog of stunning visuals she left behind. Rather than dwell on the loss, MTV News went digging in our vast store of beta tapes and turned up some choice on-air interviews with her (click the embedded video to see for yourself). “Everything is worth it,” she says of her success, on “Diary.” “The hard work, the times when you’re tired, the times when you’re a bit sad. In the end, it’s all worth it because it really makes me happy.” The year before she dropped Aaliyah, her sultry recording of the Timbaland-produced “Try Again,” from the soundtrack for her feature-film debut “Romeo Must Die,” netted her a Grammy and a Video Music Award, among other accolades. By 2001, Hollywood was fully on notice, sending her scripts, which led to roles like a high-profile part in the “Matrix” sequels . “I’m a bit of a perfectionist and I’m also a bit of a workaholic and I want everything to be perfect,” she adds after a grueling rehearsal with her dancers. But it wasn’t all work, no play. Baby Girl, as frequent collaborator Missy Elliott and others affectionately called her, could be as goofy as the next girl. Backstage in another scene, with little prodding from hairstylist Eric Foreman (donning a lopsided wig), Aaliyah begins to harmonize to the Ashford & Simpson soul classic “Solid.” Gripping her toy-store mic, she can barely keep it together before collapsing into laughter. While she had largely evaded the kind of scandal that can trip up other young pop stars, A was reflective, too, about success. “The best way to deal with fame is to have that personal life,” she says at another point. That meant spending good time with her ever-present “glam squad,” family, friends and then-boyfriend Damon Dash , the onetime Roc-a-Fella mogul. In the end though, Aaliyah had a central purpose, one that probably helps explain her enduring legacy. “It’s all for the fans, it’s so they know you and they can get into you,” she says after a stream of alternately crying and screaming admirers pack an FYE record store to meet her. “Not just your music but to you as a person; it’s something that’s totally necessary.” Share your memories of Aaliyah in the comments section. Michael Jackson Family Announces Tribute Concert

Lineup for October show in Cardiff, Wales, will be revealed August 3. By Gil Kaufman Siblings LaToya, Tito, Jackie and Marlon Jackson after announcing ‘Michael Forever,’ in Beverly Hills July 25, 2011. Photo: AFP/Getty Images Michael Jackson ‘s family has announced a tribute concert to the late King of Pop that is slated to take place on October 8 in Cardiff, Wales. The four-hour show at the 75,000-capacity Millennium Stadium will be broadcast via satellite on pay-per-view and into movie theaters with a cast of big-name performers whose identities have not yet been revealed. At the Beverly Hills press conference on Monday revealing the details of the “Michael Forever” show, Jackson family matriarch Katherine was joined by sons Tito, Jackie and Marlon and daughter LaToya; siblings Jermaine, Randy, Janet and estranged husband Joe were not in attendance. “When I was told some of the names of the artists performing, I knew it would be fit for a king. If my son was here today he would feel the same way, and so I’d like to say thank you very much for helping to keep my son’s legacy alive,” Katherine Jackson said of Michael, who died in June 2009 of a heart attack caused by a prescription drug overdose. According to Wales Online , the show will feature artists Jackson admired and will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the start of his solo career. “I will be there along with as many members of my family that can make it,” Katherine said. “It is intended to be the biggest and best concert in the world for many years to come.” Sister LaToya added, “This event is far, far overdue. He was an entertainer who I feel no one can ever stand up to or hold a candle to as far as his talent is concerned. This tribute will be something spectacular and I know that he would approve.” One of the show’s producers said that despite taking place in a large stadium, the building’s roof will be closed to create a more intimate atmosphere. Proceeds from the show will benefit three charities Jackson supported: the Prince’s Trust, AIDS Project Los Angeles and a cancer charity. The show’s lineup will be announced on August 3. As with many things related to MJ’s legacy, there was controversy, as brothers Randy and Jermaine said they thought the timing of the show was inappropriate. In a statement, the two said, “While we wholeheartedly support the spirit of a tribute that honors our brother, we find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael’s death. As everyone knows, those proceedings commence September 20.” That date is when Jackson’s former doctor, Conrad Murray , is slated to go on trial for manslaughter charges in the singer’s death. Jermaine attempted to put on a tribute concert to his late brother in September 2009, but the show fell apart after many of the top acts were unable to commit to the event. Patrick Stump’s ‘This City’ Video: Go Behind The Scenes Now!

Clip for the first single off the Fall Out Boy frontman’s Soul Punk album is a decidedly minimal affair. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Patrick Stump Photo: Matt Elias Patrick Stump realizes that his new single is called “This City,” and, because of that, you’re probably expecting the video to be filled with sweeping shots of skyscrapers, bustling crosswalks and all manner of urban ephemera. Which is why he chose to include none of that in the final product — and not much else, for that matter. He wants the message of the song to stand on its own. “There’s not really a plot, there’s not really a story to it,” Stump told MTV News last week on the set of the “City” video. “The song’s called ‘This City,’ and it describes a lot of these images in a city, and I feel like those images are already there; it would be kind of redundant to take a camera into a city; it’s almost like the colors and the lights and the images that are going to be around this are going to be representing the life in a city.” So there was nary a building to be seen on the “City” set in Glendale, California. Instead, it was just Stump performing his verses in front of several screens (Lupe Fiasco, who guests on the song, wasn’t on hand), which director Ken Koller will fill with projections and colored lights. It’s an artfully abstract way to present the song, one that Stump said he and Koller agreed on almost instantly. “One thing that Ken and I were talking about is that a city is so complicated, so … we wanted to do something a bit different with it, and a bit more abstract,” he said. “I mean, the treatment was really funny to look at; it was literally one sentence, like ‘Patrick stands in a room and sings and we project all these images and lights on the walls.’ And that was it.” And while Stump admitted that Koller’s bare-bones treatment freaked out his management, he stuck with it because he believes that simplicity truly makes for better art. It’s a message that’s taken on added significance now that he’s gearing up to release his Soul Punk LP, due October 18. Because like the “This City” video, Stump would much rather prefer to let his music do the talking. “I feel like videos and stage performance, those were always natural to me — I’m a musician and that’s a comfortable surrounding for me. And videos are the same way,” he said. “Interviews and photo shoots and all those things have sort of been learning experiences, because they’re not something that comes natural to me. It’s a really weird feeling to talk about yourself all day; you have to either really like yourself or have a really great sense of irony. … It’s just a totally different thing.” Related Artists Fall Out Boy Patrick Stump

‘Glee’ Graduates Already Have After-School Plans

Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer all are working on films. By Terri Schwartz Lea Michele Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images Life is changing for the cast of “Glee,” both onscreen and off. Thursday’s Emmy nominations were kind to the cast, but creator Ryan Murphy’s announcement Wednesday that leads Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer will exit the show after the third season came as a bit of a shock to the actors involved. Apparently, neither Colfer nor Monteith was aware that their time with Fox’s hit musical show would be ending so soon, though they did know their characters would be written off at some point to coincide with their impending high school graduations. “I didn’t necessarily know that it was going to be our last season next year,” Colfer told “Access Hollywood” . “I knew something like that was coming up eventually. I mean, we can’t be there forever. I don’t necessarily want to leave so soon, but it’s fine. It’s what it is, and all things come to an end.” Fortunately, things are on an upswing for Colfer. He earned his second Emmy nomination for the show Thursday, and after winning the Golden Globe earlier this year for his performance, there’s a good chance he’ll be taking Emmy gold home come September 18. Then, Friday morning (July 15), there was the announcement that “Mad Men” star Christina Hendricks will be joining Colfer in his upcoming film project “Struck by Lightning,” which he both wrote and stars in. Sarah Hyland of “Modern Family” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” actor Dermot Mulroney jumped onboard as well. Colfer also can look forward to the release of “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie,” coming August 12. The trailer for the film debuted online Thursday. The three exiting “Glee” stars all seem to be remaining optimistic about their upcoming departure. “We always knew we’d graduate in real time. It’s all part of the plan and it’s all good! It’s going to make Season 3 amazing!!!” Michele tweeted after the announcement hit the web. Both she and Monteith also have upcoming film projects. Michele has a role in Garry Marshall’s ensemble rom-com “New Year’s Eve,” filming now, and Monteith has the upcoming “Sisters & Brothers” in addition to his recently released “Monte Carlo.” Then there’s also the rumor, courtesy of RumorFix.com , that Michele and Colfer will be receiving their own spin-off show. Were you surprised by the “Glee” announcement? Sound off below!

Rihanna Tops Lady Gaga In Facebook Fans

Rihanna has around 40,000 more admirers than Gaga on the social-networking site. By Gil Kaufman Rihanna Photo: Vallery Jean/ FilmMagic We talk a lot around here about all the records Lady Gaga is breaking, but as of Friday (July 15), there was one title that even Gaga’s ferocious Little Monsters couldn’t help her win: Queen of Facebook. Though Mother Monster has an impressive 40,575,791 Facebook fans at press time, she was just pushed down to #2 in the bid to be the most popular woman on Facebook by Rihanna , who slipped into the lead with 40,616,457 fans , or around 40,000 more Facebook admirers than Gaga. The passing of the torch was noted by Facebook’s marketing director Randi Zuckerberg, who tweeted on Thursday, “Sorry, Gaga! As of today, Rihanna has passed Lady Gaga as the #1 most popular woman on Facebook.” Of course Gaga still rules the roost on Twitter (with 11.6 million followers, she bests Rihanna, who is down at #13 in Twitter followers), where she was the first person to surpass the 10 million mark. And that’s just one of the many records she’s smashed on her way to the top . She can also breathe easier now that her personal YouTube channel has been restored after going offline earlier this week thanks to a copyright-violation issues. A YouTube spokesperson told MTV News that the takedown order was given after Gaga had accumulated an unspecified amount of copyright claims, which results in an automatic suspension of an account. The clip that appeared to trigger the suspension involved unauthorized posting of a recent performance from Japan involving the popular boy band SMAP, who appeared in a medley of Gaga tunes on a TV broadcast.
