Jalen Rose’s Detroit High School Has A 93 Percent Graduation Rate

I t’s been nine years since retired NBA star Jalen Rose opened the doors to a charter school that he created in Detroit and his effort to further education in the area has proven to be a success. According to Ebony , Rose’s school has a 93 percent graduation rate and a 100 percent college acceptance rate. Jalen Rose says In June, it will be the first time JRLA scholars that graduated from colleges across the country will have the opportunity to attend our graduation and speak to the graduates of our senior class. https://t.co/iWCaQoxBwN — EBONY MAGAZINE (@EBONYMag) October 28, 2018 The school—which is called the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy—was created for youth in the 9th through 12th grade, the news outlet writes. There are currently 400 students who attend the school. In an effort to ensure that students feel supported throughout their high school journey and after graduation, each student has a support group that is made up of current students and those who have graduated to help them stay on track. JRLA also provides students with leadership courses that delve into how to navigate real-life situations surrounding drugs, violence, and other issues that they may have to confront in their everyday lives. The school also emphasizes the importance of civic engagement and empowers its students to evoke change in their communities. JRLA is tuition-free and has an open enrollment. Rose says that he understands the essentiality of having access to a good education. “Education is a valuable tool that unlocks the future of so many young people, and the dynamics in our country have changed, which is [why I chose to] be the founder of a tuition-free public charter high school that gets zero state funding for the facility,” he told the news outlet. “It’s crucial for us to get our scholars out in the community to do charity work and to give them the life skills they will need to be successful in the endeavors that they have, and it’s more for us than just obviously the curriculum that’s required to graduate from school.” Rose isn’t the only celebrity who is using his platform and resources to further education. Almost a year after opening a charter school in Harlem, Sean Combs recently announced that he will donate $1 million for the creation of a school in the Bronx. ‘Nobody’s Fool’ & 8 Other Movies To Watch With Your Sister

Read more:

Source: gradyreese / Getty Having a sister is one of the coolest, most dramatic, loving, emotionally taxing experiences you can have in this life time. Having a sister is like having a built-in best friend, if you get along with them. Whether you’re sisters by blood, through marriage, sorority or friends who call themselves sisters, the bond is unlike any other human relationship. Even on the grander scheme of life, women are starting to band together more as a larger sisterhood, standing together against forces that try to tear us down —i.e. the male dominated government, entertainment industry, workforce, etc. Unity is key when it comes to sisterhood. Just ask Oprah who stressed the importance of sisterhood in her campaign speech for Georgia Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams . She proclaimed, “Only when we unite as sisters – and I don’t just mean ‘sistas’ – I mean sisters – black sisters, brown sisters, white sisters, Asian sisters, LGBTQ sisters. When we all unite, I know for sure a change is going to come.”   Tyler Perry tapped into the unbreakable bond of sisterhood with his latest film Nobody’s Fool starring Tika Sumpter and Tiffany Haddish as siblings with totally opposite morals, values and goals in life. Tiffany revealed to Bustle what it was like working with Tika, saying, “I feel like we knew each other in a past life, and we finally met up in this life, and we making money now girl! Because we was poor in the other life,” Haddish says. Sumpter laughs, and adds, “We was stomping roaches together.”   Don’t get us wrong — there are some downsides to having sisters that people without siblings can’t relate too. Like constantly being compared to them, the fights can get pretty catty and not to mention they steal your clothes. @WeeGeeFiji from Twitter tweeted, “The best thing about having 3 younger sisters is that we get to share everything from clothes to makeup which tbh is also the worst thing about having 3 sisters.” But the pros of being apart of a sisterhood can outweigh the bad. In the words of Cali Rae Turner, “The best thing about having a sister was that I always had a friend.”  Facts, Cali! Be sure to check out Nobody’s Fool hitting theaters this weekend, and hit the flip for more films that you and your sister should watch together.

Alaskan Bush People Season 8 to Focus on Ami’s Cancer

We have some good news for Alaskan Bush People fans… … and also some really terrible news for Alaskan Bush People fans. Unfortunately, the importance of the latter far outweighs the importance of the former. But we’ll start with a programming update: The long-awaited eighth season of this Discovery Channel hit will premiere on August 24 at 9/8c. Set your DVR and plan your upcoming vacations accordingly. The really terrible news, however, has to do with just what these new episodes will focus on. According to Radar Online, Ami Brown’s cancer has returned — and this tragic circumstance will serve as the crux of what fans will see on screen later this summer and later this fall. “Ami went to UCLA with Billy and son Bear, and her cancer is back,” an insider has told the aforementioned celebrity gossip site. Darn it. This sucks. We reported in late May that Ami checked back into a California hospital in order to have further tests run. At the time, however, we were still awaiting the results of these tests and had not heard any confirmation about the return of Ami’s illness. The mother of seven was diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer last year. Her prognosis at the time was grim, but undergoing numerous rounds of radiation and chemotherapy, the reality star announced she was cancer-free in December 2017. For some awful reason, fans had taken this remission to mean that Ami never had cancer, an assertion that Discovery Channel Executive Vice President Laurie Goldberg had to actually address a few weeks back. “Ami’s battle with cancer is very real,” Goldberg said at the time , adding: “It is just disgusting that anyone would say her cancer is not real or that it was created for the show.” Seriously. Not even the Kardashians would conjure up a cancer storyline for the sake of ratings. This latest Radar report makes us feel sad, but also asks that fans remain optimistic. That’s the approach Ami and her loved ones are trying to take. “She is still dealing with some residual effects of her diagnosis and treatment, but she is continuing to recover well,” the insider says . “She has the love and support of her entire family, and is determined to beat this.” This same source concludes that the new season of Alaskan Bush People will tell a significant chunk of Ami’s story. Not for the sake of ratings. But simply because this show chronicles the lives of the Browns and this diagnosis is obviously the most important thing going on in those lives right now. “It’s going to be a huge part of the upcoming season, and there will be interviews with her doctors and other medical professionals who have helped her along the way,” the source says. Alaskan Bush People is currently filming for the new season in Washington state, far from the family’s native Alaska. Expect plenty of changes to be afoot, except for one key one: the entire family will be involved. View Slideshow: Alaskan Bush People: 13 Secrets They Don’t Want You to Know

Dionne Lees the Gymnast with Vitiligo of the Day

Dionne Lees is some Scottish chick who was apparently an international Gymnast with Vitiligo, like she’s some Michael Jackson, only actually white, and who thought her Vitiligo was just a bad tan line, before realizing it was a skin disease, since Scottish people never see the sun and girl was just pasty white her entire life, until catching her first tan and seeing that it was uneven… Well, like all girls everywhere, she’s embracing her handicap, that isn’t really a handicap and is more of a condition, that I guess isn’t deemed marketable or mainstream, even though there are at least two high fashion models with Vitiligo…and she’s taking ownership on her issue in a “Vitiligo” lives matter…and they do matter…especially when in bikini… Because Dionne understands clickbait and the importance of a bikini pic, while that bikini pic has a reason, like empowerment for a disorder….and isn’t just shameless.. I like her thinking….and her big spotty titties.. The post Dionne Lees the Gymnast with Vitiligo of the Day appeared first on DrunkenStepFather.com .

Chrisette Michele Talks Trump Inauguration Backlash At Blitz 2017: ‘I Felt Like Nobody Heard Me’

Your browser does not support iframes. Chrisette Michele has been through a lot in 2017, and she wasn’t too shy to talk about it at Blitz 2017. After the singer shared some thoughts about the importance of showcases, hew single “Strong Black Woman” and her new album Out Of Control , she opened up about the backlash she received for performing at Donald Trump ‘s Inauguration. “It was scary. I got up and I sang a song about love and about everything is gonna be OK. I didn’t vote for Trump, I made that so clear, and I felt like nobody heard me,” she tells us. “So there was a crazy backlash in the online space, and a lot of bullying.” She also came clean about how much she was paid to perform: “Well, apparently, I got some taxpayers’ money. So I don’t know how his money and tax money go together, but I don’t think I got a large chunk of a hundred million dollars, at all… At the end of the day, those types of celebrations are run by the public.” She then went off on a bit of a tangent: “I don’t even know if we realize it, because how many of us know where our tax dollars really go? But it was a party, run by taxpayers’ dollars. So he wasn’t there, I don’t know that you could say it’s for Trump, so much as it was a celebration around the event.” Well, sis, it’s clear you want to leave this behind you and that’s totally understandable. Check out the rest of the interview with Chrisette, above.

Jennifer Aniston Old Lady Erotica of the Day

Old Lady Jennifer Aniston proves that it may be too late to have kids due to menopause and her egotistical narcissism in her younger years forcing her to push off pregnancy to be the “hot chick” who isn’t even that hot….but who I guess demanded dudes she fucked to finish in her ass – GREEK or maybe dudes didn’t want to make babies with her because she’s a maniac….crazy rich weirdo who has the world validating her importance and celebrity….it’s all our fault she is a terrible person no one sticks with because she sucks.. But it’s never too late to show off you tits, to get attention with your tits, to matter because of your tits, because we love tits… I mean it doesn’t matter now, but in the 90s when she was on friends, and constantly hard nippled, that was fucking edgy, pushing it, didn’t happen on TV, and I am sure many dudes jerked off to it, I’m sure it’s part of why the show got viewers, because we love tits… Here she is in a magazine… The post Jennifer Aniston Old Lady Erotica of the Day appeared first on DrunkenStepFather.com .
