Brothers Freed After 30 Years For Crime They Didn’t Commit Wow. We’re happy that these wrongfully accused brothers are finally free, but after 30 years?!?!?!?!? Via Telegraph UK: Two mentally impaired half-brothers were freed on Tuesday after serving three decades in a United States prison for the rape and murder of a child that they did not commit. A judge in Robeson County said that Henry Lee McCollum, 50, North Carolina state’s longest-serving death-row inmate, and Leon Brown, 46, were innocent of the 1983 rape and killing of 11-year-old Sabrina Buie after new DNA evidence came to light. Both are severely intellectually disabled and were teenagers at the time of their arrests in 1983. Following false confessions, McCollum was given a death sentence and Brown was serving life for the rape. “This case highlights in a most dramatic manner the importance of finding the truth,” said Ann Kirby, attorney for Brown. “Today, truth has prevailed, but it comes 30 years too late for Sabrina Buie and her family, and for Leon, Henry, and their families. “Their sadness, grief, and loss will remain with them forever.” North Carolina state law now requires homicide interrogations to be recorded or videotaped, but at the time the brothers were convicted such laws were not in effect. Hopefully the DNA results will lead North Carolina to the person who actually raped and murdered Sabrina Buie. SMH.

Study Finds That “Fat People” Are Happiest In Similar Weight Groups A new study has proven that larger people are happiest when they remain in community groups of like-weighted individuals. However that contentement doesn’t necessarily come from the ability to hit the buffet together, but moreso from the lack of judgement and stigma placed on them by having skinnier peers . Via MailOnline : Overweight people can be just as happy as their skinny friends – as long as they are surrounded by others of a similar shape. How your figure compares with others in the community is key when it comes to feeling good about yourself, a study has found. The finding could explain why more than three-quarters of people in some towns are overweight or obese, as couch potato lifestyles and unhealthy diets become the norm. The U.S. researchers found most people are absolutely content – even if they are out of shape – as long as most of those around them are wobbling about as well. Sociologist Philip Pendergast said: ‘The most interesting finding for us was in U.S. counties where obesity is particularly prevalent, being obese has very little negative effect on one’s life satisfaction. ‘In addition, we found being ‘normal weight’ has little benefit in counties where obesity is especially common. ‘This illustrates the importance of looking like the people around you when it comes to satisfaction with life.’ He added that obesity does not seem to be the main reason obese people are less satisfied with life. Rather, it is the ‘stigmatisation’ of being abnormal that causes them to feel low. Well this certainly explains that one group of big chicks always in the club together! But in all seriousness, we have got to stop thinking this way. If a group of fat friends inspire each other to stay fat…couldn’t at least one fit friend change the dynamic?

Parents know that going out to restaurant with small children can be tough. It can be great in that you don’t have to cook, but it’s always a challenge. At its best, it’s hectic, with more wrangling, cleaning, and wiping up going on actual eating. At worst, if the kids act up, it can be stressful and disruptive. If you happen to be a single parent of three kids, including two who have special needs, you can multiply all of those concerns several times over. Take the case of one mom, who wishes to remain nameless and has been taking her kids out to a new restaurant every Friday for the last few years. Amazing Act of Kindness For Struggling Single Mom During one of those meals out recently, she nervously apologized in advance for the noise her family to a man who was sitting nearby. But he didn’t mind. In fact, he paid for her family’s meal and left her a note that brought her to tears. Any parent who reads it after the jump may join her in that regard: “I do not know your back story, but I have had the privilege of watching you parent your children for the past 30 minutes. I have to say thank you for parenting your children in such a loving manner.” “I have watched you teach your children about the importance of respect, education, proper manners, communication, self control, and kindness all while being very patient.” “I will never cross your path again but am positive that you and your children have amazing futures. “Keep up the good work and when it starts to get tough do not forget that others may be watching and will need the encouragement of seeing a good family being raised. God bless! – Jake.” After receiving such a kind gesture from a stranger, the mom was beside herself. She told ABC News afterward, “You just don’t know what people go through.” “Here I’ve had the worst few years of my life and I never get recognition like this, I just do what I can to get by. I want him and his family to know that he’s awesome.” “You never know who’s watching you.” To her, this meant the world, and not just because of the free meal. The fact that a kind soul took such enjoyment in sitting next to her and her family? Priceless.

Michelle Obama Speaks On Higher Education For African-American Students First Lady Michelle Obama is giving her two cents on the lack of priority that young African-American students place on higher education. The FLOTUS recently addressed the graduating class of Bowie State University, which is one of many Historically Black Colleges, where she made it a point to stress the importance of going to college and commended the graduating class for beating the statistics. via Think Progress First Lady Michelle Obama decided to trot out some very old talking points in her commencement address to the 2013 graduating class at Bowie State University: “Today, instead of walking miles every day to school, they’re sitting on couches for hours, playing video games, watching TV. Instead of dreaming of being a teacher or a lawyer or a business leader, they’re fantasizing about being a baller or a rapper,” Obama continued. “Right now, one in three African American students are dropping out of high school, only one in five African Americans between the ages of 25 and 29 has gotten a college degree.” But priorities should change, she said, because “getting an education is as important if not more important than it was back when this university was founded.” The first lady is known for keeping it 100 when she speaks, and this time was no exception.
