Justin Bieber Concert Canceled In Australia Due To Crowd Stampede

Thousands surge stage barriers, injuring some, before police shut down Sydney appearance. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber in Sydney on Sunday Photo: Graham Denholm/Getty Images Justin Bieber has done it again. The Canadian teen who has caused shopping mall stampedes in New York and Paris the past, set off a dangerous crowd surge in Sydney, Australia, on Monday (April 26) when fans just couldn’t wait for his scheduled mini-set on the “Sunrise” morning show. Producers were forced to cut short his appearance to avoid further injuries to the hysterical crowd. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, thousands of Bieber fans camped out overnight at the overseas passenger terminal at Circular Quay in Sydney Harbour for Bieber’s only scheduled concert in Australia on Monday. But when the screaming teens began to surge forward in waves while waiting for him to appear, police said they broke down the crowd barrier and girls near the front were being crushed against the stage, so organizers and police canceled the show. ? “Everybody was just shoving and pushing forward. They had two massive screens out, and they started to play Justin Bieber songs and everybody started cheering and pushing forward more,” said 13-year-old Sophie Kelly , one of four Aussie teens who won a contest to meet Bieber before the aborted show. The concert’s host came out and told the crowd the show would be canceled if everyone didn’t take two steps back and stop pushing. ? “But he [the host] was acting like the whole thing was a joke, and he kept on adding Justin Bieber things in there and so people just kept on screaming and pushing forward more,” Kelly said. The problems began when word started to circulate around 2 a.m. that Bieber had arrived in Sydney, which set off a crowd surge that continued on and off for the next several hours, and some of the estimated 4,000 fans were trampled and crushed. More than 100 teens near the stage were pulled out of the crush suffering from distress, another 10 were treated by paramedics after fainting, and two were taken to a local hospital for more serious injuries. Police decided to pull the plug before any more injuries were sustained, according to the paper. ? Police broke up the event and told everyone to go home, which did not sit well with the fans, or their parents. “Clearly this total waste of our kids’ time, sleep and pocket money getting there was a deliberate publicity stunt designed to exploit fans,” one father told the paper. Hoping to calm the disappointed crowd down, Bieber performed his hit “Baby” in the “Sunrise” studio before telling fans to go home. He had been scheduled to sing three songs at the show. ? “I would love you to stay and hang, but you have got to go,” he told the throng. “The police say you’ve got to go home.” He promised to come back to Australia soon. “I am just as disappointed as everyone else with the news from this morning. I want to sing for my fans.” he tweeted later, clarifying that he did not cancel the show. “I woke up this morning to the police canceling the show for safety reasons. … I love my fans … I love it here in Australia … and I want to sing.” Bieber later thanked his Australian fans for such a warm welcome and reminded them that their safety comes first. “With everything that happened 2day I want u all 2 know I care and u all rule and if I could thank every 1 of u individually I would,” he tweeted hours after the incident. For fervent Bieber followers, the Sydney surge sounded very similar to a previous incident at mall in Long Island, New York, in November, when a concert by the singer was canceled at the final moment and hundreds of fans started a stampede after an alleged sighting of the singer. Bieber’s manager, Scott “Scooter” Braun , pleaded not guilty last month to charges of reckless endangerment and criminal nuisance stemming from the incident at Roosevelt Field Mall when a crowd of 30,000 became unruly and five were injured in a stampede.? Do you think Justin Bieber fans are getting a little too feverish, or are the police overreacting? Have you been at an out-of-control Bieber event? Reuters Chief Shoots Down Story on Killing of His Own Staffers In Baghdad [Exclusive]

David Schlesinger , the editor in chief of Reuters, declined to run a story by one of his own reporters containing claims that the 2007 killings of two Reuters staffers in Baghdad by U.S. troops may have been war crimes. Reuters staffers Namir Noor-Eldeen and Saeed Chmagh were killed by U.S. helicopter gunships in Baghdad in 2007. Video of the attack, which shows the journalists standing next to unidentified armed men on a Baghdad street and records the destruction of a van attempting to retrieve a wounded Chmagh, was published this week by Wikileaks. The video has launched a debate about the legality of the attack, which also wounded two children ( you can read our take here ). Yesterday, Reuters’ deputy Brussels bureau chief Luke Baker filed a muscular story repeating allegations from several human rights and international law experts that the killings may have constituted war crimes. But Reuters chief David Schlesinger, a tipster says, spiked the story because “it needed more comment from the Pentagon and U.S. lawyers.” It never ran, but you can read it in full below. Reuters’ response to the disclosure of the video has been relatively muted. Schlesinger issued a statement on Tuesday calling the video “disturbing” but declining to assign blame or accuse the U.S. military of improper behavior: In this particular case, [I] want to meet with the Pentagon to press the need to learn lessons from this tragedy. These stories are not easy for us to report or to be involved in. They test our commitment to viewing events and actions objectively. What matters in the end is not how we as colleagues and friends feel; what matters is the wider public debate that our stories and this video provoke. Baker’s story went much farther, quoting three human rights experts describing the killings as war crimes. While portions of those quotes ended up running in a different Reuters story on the video that appeared yesterday and which Baker is credited as having contributed to, some of the more direct accusations did not. For instance, Baker quoted Clive Stafford-Smith, a human rights lawyer, saying, “I don’t think there’s any question that this is a violation of the Geneva Conventions.” Stafford-Smith didn’t appear in any of Reuters’ coverage of the incident. Baker’s story also paraphrased Reuters lawyer Thomas Kim saying that “further investigation may be required” into the incident—a sentiment that Schlesinger did not express in his initial statement. Kim’s remark does not appear in any of Reuters’ coverage of the killings. The U.S. Central Command has said it has no plans to reopen an investigation. Our tipster is baffled by Schlesinger’s apparent hesitance to take on the Pentagon over the killings: “Nothing about wanting to seek justice for the deaths of the Reuters’ employees or about seeking the truth. Just a bland statement about wanting to work with the Pentagon. Whose side is this guy on? Does he have any spine?” A Reuters spokesperson denied in absolute terms the accusation that Baker’s story was spiked. “It’s 100% not true that the story was spiked,” she said. “Schlesinger sent it back for more reporting. But it was overtaken by events, and parts of it eventually ran in an updated story.” This isn’t the first time Schlesinger has been accused of killing Reuters stories for fishy reasons. In December, Talking Biz News reported that Schlesinger spiked a damaging story about hedge fund manager Steve Cohen after Cohen called to complain. He later admitted that it wasn’t “a bad story” and that it “could have run.” Here’s Baker’s spiked story: BRUSSELS, April 7 (Reuters) – Leaked footage of a U.S.military helicopter firing on and killing a group of people in Baghdad suggests the pilots may have acted illegally, international law and human rights experts said on Wednesday. The black-and-white footage, released by the Web site WikiLeaks (www.wikileaks.com) on Monday, consists of 40 minutes of video from the gun-camera of a helicopter hovering over east Baghdad in 2007 as nearly a dozen men, including a Reuters photographer and his driver, gathered in the street below. According to a transcript of the air crew’s conversation that accompanies the video, the pilots think some of the men are carrying weapons and quickly discuss whether to open fire. “That’s a weapon,” one voice says. “Yeah,” another replies. A U.S. military legal expert said the helicopter crew mighthave a legal defence in as much that they “honestly and reasonably” believed the men were hostile, but a British former army officer said there was “blatant” evidence of a war crime. “Light ’em all up. Come on fire,” says one of the pilots, before the helicopter gunner begins shooting, hitting and killing Reuters photographer Namir Noor-Eldeen, 22, and driver Saeed Chmagh, 40, among others. Chmagh is initially wounded and tries to crawl away. One of the pilots can be heard urging the Iraqi to reach for a weapon so that he can open fire again under the rules of engagement. Several minutes later, a van arrives on the street and three or four unarmed men get out to help Chmagh, picking up his body. The pilots seek permission from commanders to open fire again, relaying the information that people are arriving to”pick up bodies and weapons”. The commander gives approval and the helicopter fires again, killing Chmagh and several others. The U.S. military, which has confirmed that the footage is authentic, said on Monday it regretted the loss of life. A spokesman for the U.S. Central Command said an investigation carried out by the military into the incident found the pilots acted accordingly and he said there was “never any attempt to cover up any aspect of this engagement”. But human rights lawyers and other experts who have viewed the footage say they have many concerns about how the pilots operated, particularly when it came to firing on the van, which was also carrying two children who were wounded in the attack. “I don’t think there’s any question that this is a violation of the Geneva Conventions,” said Clive Stafford-Smith, a U.S.-British human rights lawyer who runs the charity Reprieve, referring to the body of laws that governs armed conflict. “There are two aspects to it — firstly it was clear that these people were unarmed or not fighting, and then there’s the shooting of the wounded man as he was trying to crawl away and people were coming to help him,” he told Reuters. The Geneva Conventions state that protection must be given to those who “collect and care” for the wounded in a conflict”whether friend or foe”, but lawyers said that principle appeared to have been abandoned in this case. DESENSITISED KILLING Chris Cobb-Smith, a former British army officer who has conducted investigations in war zones, said knowing exactly what rules of engagement the pilots were operating under was critical to understanding whether they had acted appropriately. But even then, he said, the decision to fire on the van as unarmed men came to help one of the wounded appeared to be a clear breach of the laws governing military conduct in war. “Engaging the people picking up the wounded is outrageous,”he said. “That is the element that is blatant. That is against all humanitarian law and the rules of conflict — most definitely and without a doubt,” he told Reuters. David Schlesinger, Reuters’ editor-in-chief, said the video showed the “extreme dangers that exist in covering war zones”and said he would seek to meet with officials at the Pentagon to”press the need to learn lessons from this tragedy”. Asked whether the company had any intention of pursuing legal action over the deaths of Noor-Eldeen and Chmagh, Thomson Reuters’ deputy legal counsel, Thomas Kim, said: “Our priority is to engage in dialogue at a senior level with the Pentagon.” He added, however, that the footage, which Thomson Reuters had repeatedly sought to have the U.S. military release, indicated further investigation may be required. Bibi van Ginkel, an international lawyer and senior fellow at the Clingendael Netherlands Institute of International Relations, said the video was only a fragment of evidence and more investigation was needed. But still she added: “My first guess would be that a war crime was committed. Very simply speaking, if people are helping the wounded, they are non-combatants. If force is used against them, then that is a war crime. But will it be investigated.” While the video footage, with its gung-ho audio track —including the words “look at all those dead bastards” — is shocking, some military experts said there may be nothing wrong with the acts carried out given the combat environment. In a military courtroom, a jury would have to decide if the gunner “honestly and reasonably” believed he was shooting the enemy, Gary Solis, a military law expert at Georgetown University, told online magazine Salon. “That will always be a defence,” he said. But whether there are grounds for legal action or not, experts said their bigger concern was about the desensitisation of war, with soldiers appearing to dehumanise the enemy and seeming not to care about killing from afar. “It’s the attitude and mindset of the computer, war-gaming generation,” said Cobb-Smith. “The detachment that a serviceman can now feel when he’s operating a weapons system at such a distance via a video screen. That’s unnerving and worrying.” (Additional reporting by Alastair Macdonald in Jerusalem)

Eva Longoria Confirms a "Thing" on Set Between Nicollette Sheridan and Marc Cherry

Appearing today on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show, Eva Longoria was asked about the lawsuit brought on this week by her former co-star, Nicollette Sheridan, against her current boss, Marc Cherry. While initially saying she doesn’t know “any of the details,” Tony Parker’s more beautiful half did proceed to open up about an incident that took place around 2008. “I know that they did have a thing on set – I guess it was a couple of years ago,” she said. “It’s so long ago, the actual incident, and I wasn’t on set when it happened,” she said. But apparently this incident had happened, and she felt it was wrong. “I am trying to get the dirt here on set, but no one’s allowed to talk about it.” Longoria referred to Cherry as “sweet” and added: “He really probably could not harm a fly.” But the actress did elaborate more on what she knows, saying: “[Nicollette] was doing a scene, and… he was showing her how to do a scene. Honestly, I wish I knew.” That seems to be the common consensus forming: Cherry and Sheridan were arguing about a scene that involved a slap, when the Desperate Housewives creator took it upon himself to physically show his star what he was looking for. That certainly makes more sense than reports that Cherry truly smacked Sheridan across the face out of anger. Such a confrontation would never have remained under the radar for this long. As always, we’ll follow up on this story when more information is available.

D’Angelo Issues Statement On Arrest

Singer ‘has pled not guilty — and is contesting the allegations made against him,’ statement reads, regarding arrest for soliciting a prostitute. By MTV News staff D’Angelo Photo: MTV A rep for R&B singer D’Angelo (real name: Michael Archer), who was arrested and charged with soliciting a prostitute Saturday in New York, issued a statement about the incident Monday (March 8). “We know there is a lot of speculation in regard to the arrest of D’Angelo in New York City this past weekend,” the statement, from Lindsay Guion of D’Angelo Management, reads. “We would like his fans and the public at large to know that D’Angelo has pled not guilty — and is contesting the allegations made against him. Also know that he is in good health and extremely excited about his forthcoming new album. “D’Angelo would like to personally thank all of his fans for the outpouring of concern, and appreciates if all would allow the American justice system to resolve the matter before jumping to any conclusions,” the statement concludes. While a police spokesperson declined to provide further details on the incident when contacted by MTV News, according to The New York Post, the singer allegedly offered an undercover policewoman $40 for oral sex. D’Angelo was driving alone in his Range Rover at Greenwich and Horatio streets at about 2:30 a.m. when he saw a woman he believed to be a prostitute, unnamed sources told the Post. He was arrested and charged with solicitation after asking the woman for sex, according to the sources, who added that the singer had $12,000 in his car. Powered by his 1995 debut LP, Brown Sugar, D’Angelo was one of the leading lights of R&B during the 1990s, but he has released little music since his 2000 sophomore effort, Voodoo, and has been plagued by legal difficulties in the years since. Ben Roethlisberger Accuser Described as "Hysterical"

The woman accusing Ben Roethlisberger of sexual assault has been questioned by officials and described as hysterical when doing so, Milledgeville, Ga., police say. Ben’s accuser – the second such claim against him in less than a year – arrived at the P.D. with three other women, according to a source at the police department. She was extremely emotional and looked like she had been crying for hours . The woman’s identity is being withheld, which is protocol with alleged sex offenses. Ben’s agent, Ryan Tollner, said Friday, “we are skeptical of motive.” But the police source said for whatever it’s worth, Ben’s accuser “did not look like” a girl who was making it up. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out. The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback has not been charged with a crime, nor was he in the incident that came to light in 2009 with Andrea McNulty , of Reno, Nev.

Ben Roethlisberger Accused of Sexual Assault Again

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is being accused of sexual assault by a Georgia woman – the second to make such claims about him. The alleged incident occurred early this morning at Capital City, a club in Milledgeville, Georgia. The alleged victim was treated at a hospital and released. SACKED : Big Ben is in hot water again over sexual assault allegations. Ben fervently denied assaulting McNulty, and apparently this woman too. Roethlisberger has already been interviewed by police , according to an update received just moments ago, but no charges have been filed against him yet. The star’s reps are denying that the football star sexually assaulted the woman last night, although said denials are short on details as of this moment. According to ProFootballTalk.com, a source close to the star said only “that the allegations were untrue and the events in question did not happen.” Again, no charges have been filed. A rep from the Steelers says: “We are gathering information on this incident – until then we have no further comment.” Story developing …
