What’s On: Miss Independence

Kelly Clarkson’s primetime comebacks are always welcome, even if they’re on a hokey pre-taped Fourth of July special. But do you think she’ll sing “Miss Independent” and make us fall crazy-in-love with 2003 again? I vote yes. But before you take out your Nikki McKibbon voodoo doll and prepare for a night of idolization, take a look at the weird klatch of comedians who are joining Clarkson on America Celebrates July 4th at Ford’s Theatre .

Illegal Sarah Palin defense fund must give back donations

A legal defense fund for former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was illegal and must repay nearly $400,000 to donors, according to a settlement with a state-appointed lawyer announced on Thursday. But Palin, the feisty former Republican vice presidential candidate who has become a fixture of the conservative Tea Party movement, probably violated a state ethics act without knowing she was doing so, independent counsel Tim Petumenos said. While governor, Palin faced some two dozen ethics complaints, which she said left her with a legal bill of more than $500,000. Her political action committee raised a fund to pay for her defense. A preliminary ruling by another independent counsel last year said the fund was illegal because it used her official position as governor to raise money for her personal gain. Petumenos confirmed the decision and said no such legal defense fund had ever been set up before for a state official in Alaska. Palin violated the ethics rules because she was a beneficiary of the fund but probably relied on bad advice from out-of-state lawyers to conclude it was above board, Petumenos said at a news conference. He added that Palin should have checked with the state attorney general before pursuing the fund. “It is the responsibility of every public official to make sure they are personally compliant with the (Alaska Ethics) Act,” he said. The deal requires Palin's fund to give back to donors $386,856 collected while she was in office. A further $33,546 collected after she resigned will not be affected by the deal. Palin, no longer a public official, has launched a new defense fund. She is now independently wealthy but her lawyer, Thomas Van Flein, told reporters he still believed she ran up the legal costs in her capacity as governor and so a new fund was justified. http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE65O0AG20100625 added by: Stoneyroad

Travis Porter Are ‘Killing’ Indie Scene With Proud To Be A Problem

Unsigned Atlanta trio say new mixtape is ‘giving most signed artists problems,’ in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Travis Porter Photo: MTV News This Week’s Main Pick Street Kings : Travis Porter Holding It Down For : ATL Mixtape : Proud to Be a Problem. Real Spit : Strap, Quez and Ali are bringing that youthful energy with a club banger and the Atlanta trio have fans on the Internet riding for them heavy. “At the moment we are an independent problem,” Quez explained of Travis Porter’s new mixtape Proud to Be a Problem. “We’re proud of it!” he added, acknowledging that the group has earned strong buzz in the South without the backing of a major. “It’s really a good vs. bad thing. It’s a good problem because we letting other independent artists know it’s possible to be known and out there, just grindin’. It’s a bad problem because we’re giving most signed artists problems.” As you can tell, these guys aren’t exactly modest about their increasing popularity. Several months ago, Travis Porter hooked up with Roscoe Dash and put out a version of “All the Way Turnt Up.” Eventually Dash, who came up with the song, released it officially through his own label, Interscope. The Interscope version didn’t feature Travis Porter, but included Soulja Boy. Still, TP kept their movement going, releasing the Problem mixtape a few weeks back — the downloads were crazy. And the group is in no rush to sign with a major label just yet. “At the moment, we’re like a high school player on the verge of going to college,” Strap said of Travis Porter’s unsigned status. “We have to pick the right one. We have to weigh out all the options and pick the best deal accordingly. When that time comes, we’ll make that decision. But at the moment, we’re killing the independent scene.” Quez and Ali have a familial bond and they’ve known Strap since they were 12. “Well, me and Ali are stepbrothers,” Quez began to explain. “So we been knowing each other. We met Strap in like the 6th grade and made a group called the Hard Hittaz and been makin’ great music ever since.” Travis Porter also have a short film out to accompany their mixtape. Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch Wants To Drop Hot Sauce This Fall

MCA is on the mend after cancer treatment, but the group may ‘reevaluate’ new album. By Gil Kaufman Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch Photo: Mark Von Holden/ Getty Images After being diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland last summer, the Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch is on the mend and thinking about music again. The MC, who underwent surgery and treatment in the fall, told Entertainment Weekly that he’s ready to get back to work. “I feel better,” Yauch said on Friday at the Independent Spirit Awards in Los Angeles. “It was touch and go there for a while, but I am finally getting my energy back.” Yauch announced on July 20 that the discovery of the cancer would necessitate the canceling of all of the Beasties’ planned summer-festival appearances and push back their new album, Hot Sauce Committee, Part One, while he underwent treatment. According to a band spokesperson, because the cancer was discovered early and localized in an area that does not affect Yauch’s vocal cords, it is believed the surgery was successful. While a the album, originally due out last September, is not yet officially rescheduled, Yauch said he expects it to drop this September. “It was really disappointing to have to hold the record and postpone the tour, but doctor’s orders,” he told EW. “We may or may not [release the album], depending on how my health is come September. We want to but we have to play it by ear.” Either way, the B-Boys are planning on taking another listen to the tracks they had prepped to see if some tweaking is in order. “I was just talking to Adam [Horovitz] and Mike [D] today on the phone and we were talking about working on it a bit,” Yauch said. “We finished the record over a year ago, so we want to take a look at it and reevaluate and make sure it is what we want to put out there and that we are still happy with it. I don’t think we will change it up too much.” A spokesperson for the group could not be reached at press time to confirm a new release date. Related Artists Beastie Boys

Embedded Tour Stop with Sebastien Tellier

Sebastien Tellier's seductive French pop helped soundtrack for “Lost in Translation” and scored him a spot in the 2008 Eurovision contest. His album “Sexuality” was produced by Daft Punk's Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, because, Tellier says, “When we talk about sex, you need to be two persons, minimum.” In San Francisco, Tellier brings along his doppelganger for a day of grooming and shopping before performing “Kilometer” at the Independent. At every Tour Stop, we follow road-weary musicians as they break free from the confines of buses, hotel rooms and stages
