Why Porn Star Sunny Leone’s Bollywood Debut Fizzled At The Box Office…

Adult actress/filmmaker/reality TV personality Sunny Leone was poised to make a big splash in her non-porny Bollywood acting debut, an erotic thriller that by all accounts had everything: Cleavage-baring love scenes, Bollywood musical interludes, a convoluted plot about a porn star asked to go undercover to lure her insane assassin-ex to the authorities. But on top of its racy material enraging some audiences in India, director Pooja Bhatt’s picture had something else working against it, even moreso stateside: Dudes, it’s called Jism 2 . Bhatt’s erotic thriller, a follow-up in name to 2003’s Jism (the word means “body” in Hindi… and something entirely different in the parlance of our times), did decent business in India last week despite lukewarm reviews. In its second week, however, Jism 2 suffered a steep drop off , but in America, where media companies like Apple reportedly balked at the title , it was a nonstarter. Maybe Leone’s fanbase opted out (save those who tuned in to Jism 2 , y’know, just for the acting). I’m guessing the limited opportunities to plaster the words “JISM 2!” on billboards and bus stops across America didn’t help, either. Or, as reviews revealed, it simply wasn’t worth getting worked up about. “The most controversial Hindi film of the year is also the worst,” blared The Hollywood Reporter in its review. Another critic at Bollywood Hungama perhaps put it best: “Sunny Leone in the driver’s seat, coupled with a generous dose of skin show and erotica, besides an attention-grabbing title, should act as a honey-trap to lure the audiences. But how one wishes this jism had soul as well!” [ THR , Yahoo India , Bollywood Hungama ]

Take a Gander at Ang Lee’s Life of Pi

Oscar-winning director Ang Lee’s upcoming 3-D adventure Life of Pi is based on the 2001 novel of the same name by Yann Martel. The fantasy-adventure follows “Pi,” an Indian boy who survives a shipwreck and is stranded on a boat in the ocean with a Bengal tiger along with some other charming critters. Tobey Maguire plays Martel in the film, which stars newcomer Suraj Sharma as the young Pi. The shots are ethereal and fantasy 3-D may be Lee’s next calling card post Taking Woodstock and Lust, Caution (not to mention his award-winning Brokeback Mountain ), which were decidedly less illusionary as this latest film appears to be. And, who wouldn’t want to make friends with a cuddly Bengal tiger anyway? Lee began shooting Life of Pi , which also stars Irrfan Khan, Gérard Depardieu, Shravanthi Sainath, Suraj Sharma and Tabu, in Taiwan and India earlier this year. 20th Century Fox will release Life of Pi November 21st.

In Ratchet White Folks News: Katy Perry To Face Indecency Charge In India For ‘Obscene’ Concert Gesture

Katy Perry To Face Indecency Charge In India Katy Perry must be taking lessons in ratchetness from her BFF Rih Rih … Katy Perry probably doesn’t know the first thing about cricket (even after being married to Russell Brand), which might explain why, during an April performance at the opening of India’s Premiere League, she sought a little onstage guidance from a pro. And now, that lesson has landed her in hot water. Yes, according to U.K. tabloid The Sun, Perry now faces an indecency charge in India stemming from a moment during her show when she brought Australian cricketer Doug Bollinger onstage to demonstrate the proper technique for swinging a bat. Bollinger cozied up behind her and gripped her microphone, a seemingly innocuous gesture that so angered a lawyer in attendance that he filed a charge against the pair — and an Indian court is set to hear the case. That lawyer, K. Jebakumar, claims the gesture — and subsequent hip-shaking dance the two shared — was “obscene and lascivious,” and “distracted students who were writing exams at the time.” Following the performance, Jebakumar filed a claim with the Madras High Court, stating that Perry and Bollinger committed offenses under India’s Indecent Representation of Woman Act. According to local press, Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra and IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla were also cited in the complaint. Source

Elsewhere In The World: Man Chops Off Daugther’s Head And Takes It To Police Station

Father Beheads Daughter For “Indecent Behavior” Ridiculous. Via CNN Police in the northern India state of Rajasthan say they were stunned when a man showed up at a police outpost holding a bloody human head in one hand and a sword in another. The head was that of the man’s daughter, chopped off because of her “indecent behavior,” Umesh Ojha, deputy superintendent of the district police, told CNN. Investigators say the man, Oghad Singh, had paraded the head through the village on his way to the police station. Singh’s daughter, Manju Kunwar, was in her 20s and was living with her parents after divorcing her husband two years ago. Her father accused her of acting indecently with other men. Authorities say Kunwar’s mother is a farmer who was working in the fields at the time and was too distraught to talk. Singh works in a marble quarry. The beheading happened on Tuesday in Dengar Ka Guda, a village in Rajsamand District about 400 kilometers, or 250 miles, from Jaipur in the state of Rajasthan. Kunwar’s head and the rest of her body were cremated according to Hindu tradition, police said. Wow.
