‘It’ll have to be around $900 million,’ Tech jokes MTV News about giving up his indie hustle for a major label. By Rob Markman Tech N9ne Photo: MTV News A strange thing happened to Tech N9ne after he dropped his All 6’s and 7’s LP last Tuesday: more than 55,000 devoted fans bought it, making it the fourth-highest selling album this week on the Billboard 200. Many are wondering how the Kansas City, Missouri, rapper got up in the top five among the likes of Adele and Lady Gaga. Well, credit his independent hustle and devoted fanbase for making the release a success. In addition to grabbing that #4 spot, All 6’s and 7’s also ranks as the #1 independent album and rap album this week. And according to Tech, major record companies have been expressing interest in striking a deal with his Strange Music label. “They’ve already been calling, since last year or the year before. They’ve already been calling and asking us questions and stuff,” he told MTV News during an intimate sit-down in his Lee Summit, Missouri, offices last week. Tech and his business partner Travis O’Guin established the indie label Strange Music in 1999, and have been releasing Tech’s music on it ever since. In 2009, it was revealed that the label earned approximately $15 million, thanks to the support of Tech’s fans, who call themselves “Technicians.” When it comes to giving up his independence, Tecca Nina isn’t so quick to sign though. Instead, he loftily aims to grow Strange Music into a major in its own right without partnering up. “I think Strange Music will be the major this year or next year. It’s looking that way,” he said. No matter how things turn out, it’s clear that Tech is happy just the way things are and couldn’t fathom selling off his company. “You might wanna ask Travis this question,” he said laughing, while deferring to O’Guin. “He’ll probably say it’ll have to be around $900 million or something [to sign a deal]. We’re good.” All 6’s and 7’s, which features Lil Wayne, T-Pain , B.o.B and Busta Rhymes, initially drew criticism from some of Tech’s fans, who frowned on the underground icon teaming up with mainstream stars. For some, collabos with such high-profile artists meant that Tech was selling out. “Different artists are supposed to hook up and make something beautiful, that’s what makes music wonderful, I think,” Tech said, defending against criticism. “I already knew what I was gonna do. When I get with these [well-known collaborators], the beats gotta say their names.” After selling 55,715 copies of the album in its first week, Strange Music can put any fear of a fan blacklash to bed.”I can give a sh– about a chart position,” O’Guin told us last week. “A fan telling me that they love the album means more than them little glass trophies. The people, I think, genuinely love the album.” What do you think of Tech N9ne’s success? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Tech N9ne

By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Elizabeth Reaser Photo: MTV News WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — When she sat down for MTV’s Sneak Peek Week to chat about the high school indie “The Art of Getting By,” Elizabeth Reaser also opened up about saying goodbye to “Twilight,” which wrapped up its epic, multi-year production earlier this year. “Oh, yeah, there was a lot of emotion,” she said at the Pacific Design Center screening, where the indie flick had just screened. “I mean, [for] months we had been through so much different weather craziness [in all different locations that] we were in denial of it the whole time.” She recalled saying goodbye to the epic five-movie saga while shooting the highly-anticipated Edward/Bella wedding scene, even though her work on the film wasn’t quite over. She’d had to stick around a bit longer to finish up some shooting on the film. “Suddenly, we were on the dance floor at the wedding and it was suddenly over,” she said. “It’s also 7 in the morning, and we had been shooting all night, so it was this weird, surreal experience. ‘Good story, good plot — but let’s get some good kung fu going!’ he tells MTV News of the film, which he plans to direct. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Keanu Reeves Photo: MTV News While Keanu Reeves pushes forward with work on “47 Ronin,” his samurai- and ninja-filled revenge story, he’s also trying to get another martial-arts film off the ground — and this one he wants to direct himself. The 46-year-old actor first told us about the project at the Toronto Film Festival last fall, but when we caught up with him recently as he promoted the indie comedy “Henry’s Crime,” Reeves spilled some additional details. “It’s called ‘Man of Tai Chi,’ ” he said. “We want to do it in Chinese and English, do it as kind of a co-production with CFG perhaps, which is a Chinese film group, kind of a studio. It’s tricky. “I would play the villain,” he added of the story, which would be set in the modern day but pay homage to kung fu films of the past. Though Reeves and his partners haven’t yet bankrolled the production, they’ve got a script in place — one that will contain a ridiculous amount of fighting. “There’s 18 fights. We’ve timed it out. It’s about 40 minutes of fighting,” he said. “I want to make a good, solid kung fu movie. Good story, good plot — but let’s get some good kung fu going!” While Reeves waits for financing to come together, he’s gearing up to shoot “47 Ronin” in 3-D . “I call it a story of revenge and impossible love,” he said. “The samurai become outcast and decide to enact revenge on the person who is responsible for the death of their lord.” Check out everything we’ve got on “47 Ronin.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘I believe the writers are six weeks away from a draft,’ Reeves tells MTV News of script for slacker sequel. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Keanu Reeves Photo: MTV News Let’s travel back in time to September 2010 and the Toronto Film Festival, when Keanu Reeves told us he was most certainly not joking about jump-starting a third “Bill and Ted” movie — 20 years after the last one hit theaters. In fact, he said, original writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon were “going to try and see if they can write something.” Flash-forward to the present day and a most excellent update on their progress, which Reeves kicked to us while promoting his indie comedy “Henry’s Crime.” “I believe the writers are six weeks away from a draft,” he said on Monday (April 4), adding with a laugh, “No pressure, guys!” Back in September, Reeves dished nothing but wacky jokes about what the project might actually look like — a 3-D black-and-white sequel co-directed by Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Werner Herzog? — but this time around the 46-year-old actor gave us some meaty clues about the film’s potential plot (albeit with a few caveats). “I know a little bit. But I don’t know — the fellas went off and cooked it up,” he explained. “I don’t know what happened when they put the elements together.” That said, Reeves went on to describe how the story arc might fit into the overall franchise mythology. “When we last got together, part of it was that Bill and Ted were supposed to have written the song that saved the world, and it hasn’t happened,” he said. “So they’ve now become kind of possessed by trying to do that. Then there’s an element of time and they have to go back,” he added before trailing off. So it seems that “Bill and Ted 3” (or whatever it ends up being called) will focus on the Wyld Stallyns’s attempts to live up to the hype that Rufus (George Carlin) first revealed in the 1989 original. Perhaps they’re running out of time. After all, Bill (Alex Winter) and Reeves’ Ted will be approaching 50 in the third film, a prospect that had Reeves laughing, “That’s pretty excellent!” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
