John Cena’s ‘Grind’ Inspires Bumpy Knuckles

‘I never met somebody so adamant about being better at what they do,’ Bumpy tells ‘RapFix Live’ of his friend’s dedication to rap. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Bumpy Knuckles on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Who says hip-hop can’t bring people together? You wouldn’t think that WWE star John Cena and rapper Bumpy Knuckles have very much in common, but the two friends found a mutual respect for each other thanks to music. After meeting at a New York radio station years back, Bumpy helped coach Cena to become a better lyricist. Bump even appeared on several tracks from Cena and Tha Trademarc’s 2005 debut rap album, You Can’t See Me. “Me and him became real good friends,” Bumpy said of Cena when he appeared on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” While at the radio station, the two engaged in an arm-wrestling match, which “RapFix Live” host Sway said Bumpy won. After they exchanged numbers, the wrestling star sought out the rap veteran’s help on the m-i-c. “John came to my studio, and from then on, it was over,” Bump said. “I never met somebody so adamant about being better at what they do. John is a big inspiration in what I do, because I watch him, I watch his grind.” Bumpy gave Cena tips for the recording booth, helping him to find his voice. “John got in there, and he worked,” he said. “Him and Trademarc, they’re cousins, they both worked diligently at becoming better MCs.” Cena has a similar respect for Bumpy, who just released The Kolexxxion with DJ Premier. “There’s a few guys that you don’t mess with in the industry, and he’s one of them, but on the real, one of those talented MCs in the game,” Cena told MTV News during an interview earlier this month to promote his highly anticipated WrestleMania XXVIII match, which he lost to the Rock. “You get [Bumpy] in a verbal and physical confrontation, and you can never bet against him.” What do you think of Bumpy Knuckles and John Cena’s friendship? Aubrey O’Day Upset Over Being Called A Stank Ho By Arsenio Hall On “Celebrity Apprentice” If the shoe fits, wear it girl! Aubrey O’Day is crying a river about getting played out onscreen during a taping of the latest season of “Celebrity Apprentice,” but we’re having a hard time understanding why she’s so offended. According to USWeekly reports : Aubrey O’Day is fired — up! After the pop singer took sole credit for her team’s big win on The Celebrity Apprentice on April 1, Arsenio Hall, 56, lashed out at her. “I guess it’s flattering that I upset him so much,” the singer, 28, tells the new Us Weekly (on stands Friday) of Hall, who later referred to “her stank ass” and told teammates, “I Googled her and a naked picture with a gut popped up…f–k her!” O’Day, who dramatically fled the boardroom after Hall’s rant, adds that the former late-night host is just warming up. “Arsenio gets worse in the next episode, when he calls me a whore,” she reveals. “He doesn’t want strong women to have too much of a voice. Typical in this industry.” We’re pretty sure Arsenio doesn’t have a problem with strong women — just hoes. But hey, she is wasting too much time being upset about this. Rihanna Would Give Her ‘Entire Life’ To Play Whitney Houston

‘That’s a huge, huge role, and whoever does it has to do a good job,’ singer/actress tells the U.K. Press Association. By Kara Warner Rihanna and Whitney Houston Photo: Getty Images Because of the larger-than-life pop-star status Whitney Houston left behind with her untimely death in February, it comes as no surprise that Hollywood would be interested in making a biopic to honor her legacy. The competition for the role is sure to be fierce. Some ladies who have been mentioned as potential candidates to play Houston at various stages in her life include: “Dreamgirls” actress/singer Jennifer Hudson, who performed the heartfelt “I Will Always Love You” tribute at the 2012 Grammys , Vivica A. Fox, Meagan Good and “American Idol” alum and Houston’s “Sparkle” co-star Jordin Sparks . Then there’s fellow pop star/ actress Rihanna , who, in speaking with reporters from the U.K. Press Association , revealed that she would give her ” entire life” for the opportunity to play Houston. “My first song that I remember falling in love with was a Whitney Houston song: ‘I Will Always Love You,’ ” Rihanna said. “It was really inspiring, and it made me develop a passion for music, so really, she’s partly responsible for me being here in this industry. “That would be something that I would have to give my entire life to do, because I would really want to pull it off,” the “Talk That Talk” singer continued. “That’s a huge, huge role, and whoever does it has to do a good job.” We’ll all get to see RiRi’s acting chops when “Battleship” opens in theaters next month. Director Peter Berg told MTV News that Rihanna brings “a real intensity” to her role, which could offer a glimpse of what she might do if given the opportunity to portray Houston in the biopic, if it is green-lit. Rihanna Enjoys Some Drama-Free Birthday Cake

Singer celebrates grandmother’s birthday in New York, live tweeting almost the entire affair. By John Mitchell Rihanna and her grandparents Photo: Instagram Enjoying a bit of a break after a hectic few months, Rihanna stopped by her grandparents’ apartment in Brooklyn, New York, this weekend for an intimate family gathering celebrating her grandmother’s birthday. The Barbadian pop sensation live tweeted practically the entire affair, beginning with a stop to pick up some wine and grub. Ever the expert in double entendre, Rihanna tweeted a picture of the sausage aisle, calling it her “fave section in Whole Foods.” She posted 21 pictures of the festivities, many with the hashtag #grangrandollybday. (To take a look at some of the photos, click here.) It’s been a busy and at times controversial 2012 for Rihanna, who has endured heavy criticism for her decision to add ex-boyfriend Chris Brown to a remix of her Talk That Talk track “Birthday Cake.” Brown remains on probation after pleading guilty to felony assault of the singer in 2009. But the only thing on Rihanna’s mind this weekend was celebrating her “Gran Gran” Dolly’s birthday with family and close friends. Ever the devoted granddaughter, Ri-Ri hit the kitchen to cook up some goods before enjoying a glass of wine with her grandparents, who met in Guyana before moving to Barbados and later the U.S. Growing up, Rihanna regularly spent holidays in New York with her grandparents. The “We Found Love” singer even tweeted her grandfather’s confusion over her ever-changing hair color. “My GranDad: Robyn how ya is get hair from red to cream to black??? Cuz ya don’t carry wigs,” she wrote. “Ya does wash it out?! ME: ROTFL (no words)” It looks like Gran Gran Dolly got plenty of gifts and the family enjoyed cake and champagne as well as a fun game of dress up. Rihanna posted several pics of both her grandmother and grandfather Lionel sporting sideways-skewed baseball caps and heavy gold chains. The family visit must have been a nice change of pace for the always-working diva, who is prepping for the May release of her film debut, “Battleship.” She’s also still promoting her hit 2011 album Talk That Talk, and in a recent interview with “Access Hollywood,” she admitted she’s trying to work out a collaboration with her good friend Katy Perry. “We have been working on this for years. We still are trying to make a song together, Katy Perry and I,” Rihanna said. “She is one of my favorite musicians, as well as one of my favorite people in the industry. … Whenever we’re in the same city, we try to do something — whether it’s seeing each other for five minutes for a hug [or] whether it’s partying all night at some random afterparty for an award show.” As for the duet, it’s on the docket if not necessarily in the works. “The song will probably come out in a while,” Rihanna told “Access Hollywood.” “I won’t say that it’s happening right now, but it’s going to happen.” Related Photos Rihanna Parties With Her Grandparents Related Artists Rihanna

‘Buried Life’ Stars Weigh In On Presidential Election ‘Chatter’

‘A lot of people on college campuses right now are over it,’ Jonnie Penn tells MTV News. By Uptin Saiidi Jonnie Penn, Ben Nemtin, Duncan Penn and Dave Lingwood of “The Buried Life” Photo: MTV News When they’re not checking off items on their bucket list , the four guys that make up “The Buried Life” have been busy touring the country to speak at colleges and universities. The MTV stars currently have a new show in development and a book due out later this month called “What Do You Want to Do Before You Die?” which they hope makes it onto the New York Times Best Sellers list — it’s #19 on their bucket list. They recently stopped by MTV News while in New York to speak at St. John’s College, where they weighed in on themes of the presidential election as they relate to young people. “A lot of people on college campuses right now are over it. They kind of want to move on, they want to work, they want to apply themselves and they’re just sick of all this kind of … chatter,” Jonnie Penn said. “So are we. All this chatter kind of buries you. You just want to push all that stuff away.” Disinterest among young people is already showing at the polls. On Super Tuesday, MTV News had teams dispatched in three states. In Massachusetts, correspondent Jacob Soboroff reported on the record-low turnout at Boston University — the state’s largest university. Meanwhile, students in Ohio offered various reasons for not voting, from having plans to “paint” to just not caring. When asked what the solution was to raising political awareness among college-age students, Ben Nemtin perked up. “If you have an inkling in what you feel you want to do, but you haven’t done it yet, find people around that you can collaborate with. That’s how this thing started. We weren’t best friends growing up or anything — we came together to start ‘Buried Life.’ ” One solution Jonnie ultimately offered was to actually do less talking. “Some advice someone gave me that I took to heart was, listening to the people you don’t agree with, take in the positions … learn from the people you don’t agree with. “See why they feel that way and then it will help you understand why you feel the way you do, and it will also help you say, ‘Well, maybe we can compromise to do this.’ Because if you don’t listen, you’re just adding to the chatter.” Related Videos Super Tuesday: MTV News Is On The Ground!

‘Degrassi’ Stars Look To Drake, Nina Dobrev For Career Models

New cast tells MTV News which ‘Degrassi’ alums they look up to most. By Jocelyn Vena The cast of “Degrassi” “Degrassi” has become quite the starting-off point for some of the biggest stars on the planet. It launched this little-known rapper who goes by Drake and two of the CW’s biggest stars, “Vampire Diaries” actress Nina Dobrev and “90210” star Shenae Grimes. So, when several of the classic franchise’s new class stopped by MTV News, we wondered just which alum’s career path they’d love to follow. “I’d love to do this, all the time. I just love to do acting,” Munro Chambers told us just as the new season of the show was hitting TeenNick, before joking, “I’d love to be Nina. I’d love to do more stuff in this industry and keep doing it.” He added that while he hasn’t met all those famous alums, when he has crossed paths with someone from the show’s past, they’ve always had pleasant memories of their “Degrassi” days. “I’ve never met Drake, or Aubrey [Graham] as we know him. I’ve never met Shenae,” he said. “And, I’ve met Nina once or twice and she’s a sweetheart.” Chambers’ co-star Annie Clark would also love to take a play from the Dobrev handbook. ” Nina and Shenae have what I would like [to follow] for the future,” she shared. “[Nina] always remembers everyone too. The set is very homey and friendly, so it’s kind of like going back to your actual high school.” “I’d love to like try and stay in school,” Alex Steele shared. “But I’d also really love to do shows, like Nina Dobrev, [who] has her own show basically.” While Nina seems to be the gold standard in terms of post-“Degrassi” careers, Jordan Todosey suggested she wouldn’t mind going the Drake route. “I love acting, so I’d love to stay in acting,” she said. “But music is such a passion of mine and I write songs and sing, so I think it’d be so much fun to break into the music industry too.”

French Montana ‘Wasn’t Gonna Do’ XXL Freshman Cover

‘I felt like I deserved it two years ago,’ Bad Boy rapper tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway The cover of XXL ‘s Freshman issue Photo: MTV News French Montana has been grinding for years, but to many the XXL Freshman is still a relative newcomer. Though he has more than a dozen mixtapes, Montana has yet to release his debut album — it’s scheduled to drop July 17. Still, French initially felt he had surpassed the current crop of rap rookies and almost turned down the cover opportunity, until he thought about it a little more. “I kinda like wasn’t gonna do it, because I felt like I deserved it two years ago, last year. You know how that goes,” French told Sway on Wednesday’s episode of “RapFix Live.” After a meeting with the magazine’s staff, French changed his mind and agreed to shoot the cover with rappers like his Bad Boy labelmate Machine Gun Kelly, Iggy Azalea and Future. “They were like, ‘This is based upon if you don’t have an album out.’ But to me I looked at it as another stepping stone because I respect everything they do,” French told Sway. “I said, ‘I really don’t have no album out and I’m still like a rookie to the mainstream world.’ ” It’s been a long road for the Morocco-born, Bronx, New York-raised rapper. Wanting to make a name for himself, French started a series of street-flavored DVD documentaries that he branded “Cocaine City” in 2003. He covered the hottest rap talent but created a platform where he could show off his own music as well. The tactic worked, but it did have some setbacks. “My vision for that was a platform for me to showcase my talent,” he said. “When we were doin’ the ‘Cocaine City’ DVDs, we kinda like attacked a lot of rappers, because, you know, negativity spreads faster. So you did what you had to do. So it backfired on me when I was trying to rap.” Frenchie feels that his negative coverage of other MCs caused him to be blackballed in the industry, but he continued to put out music. Now his “Shot Caller” single is climbing up the Billboard rap charts and the release of his debut album, Excuse My French, will be overseen by Diddy and Rick Ross. And, of course, French Montana appears on the XXL Freshman cover. Things are looking up. What do you think of French Montana’s inclusion on the 2012 XXL Freshman cover? Tell us in the comments!
