Kush Chronicles: Dumba$s Dude Growing Marijuana Puts Himself On Blast

How dumb can you be???? A Connecticut man’s plan to grow marijuana went up in smoke after he called 911 and asked how much trouble he would get into for growing the drug. “I was just growing some marijuana and I was just wondering what, how much, you know, trouble you can get into for one plant,” a not-so-bright Robert Michelson asked on Thursday night. When the dispatcher asked if there was an active crime in progress, the 21-year-old answered “possibly.” Dispatchers traced the call to Michelson’s home in Farmington, where cops found drug paraphernalia and a small amount of pot. Michelson admitted he bought seeds and equipment online for growing. He was released on a $5,000 bail. As he left the police station, he gave dispatchers two middle fingers. “Presumably for doing such a good job,” police said. Source

What Is Demi Lovato’s Post-Treatment Plan?

Disney Channel is willing to wait until the star is ready to return to work, MTV News learns. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Jason LaVeris/ WireImage Last week, Demi Lovato left a treatment center after seeking help for personal issues. Before she entered treatment, Lovato had a big 2011 ahead of her . She was busy working on new music and was set to return to work on her hit Disney show, “Sonny With a Chance.” Lovato’s post-treatment plan is still up in the air, but MTV News has learned that the Disney Channel will wait to begin working again with the star until her camp feels she is ready. As for “Sonny With a Chance,” for now, it will continue to focus on the show within the show, “So Random.” Disney reps told MTV News that those sketches will eventually become a full series; production on the show began last week. Further information on “Sonny” was not made available at press time. Lovato plans to tour later this year and will focus on making sure ticket prices are affordable for her fans. “I have best friends that aren’t in the industry and are dealing with just buying groceries and things like that,” she said about the solo trek. “So I want to do my part.” Prior to her treatment, Lovato has already began work on new music, with producers like Timbaland wanting to work with the Disney star . Last year, when she spoke to MTV News about her next album, Lovato noted that she wanted to go more R&B . “I would love for Drake to be on the album,” Lovato said. “It’s kind of like a pipe dream. I would also like to do a song with Trey Songz. It would be hot!” The singer added that she wanted to show off her big voice on the upcoming record. “It’s really nice to embrace it,” she said. “I grew up singing R&B and then I grew up listening to rock, so it was kind of weird. But I’m kind of learning how to incorporate the two and I’m having a good time with it.” What are you hoping to see from Demi Lovato now that she’s finished treatment? Rah Digga Says She Won’t ‘Get Caught Up’ In Femcee Feuds

Ex-Flipmode MC tells Mixtape Daily battle between Nicki Minaj, Lil’ Kim and others is about ‘celebrity,’ not artistry. By Jayson Rodriguez, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Rah Digga Photo: Raw Koncept Media Group The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From the Underground Can’t a lady MC just spit anymore? With all the beefing going on between Nicki Minaj, Lil’ Kim , Foxy Brown and now, even Jackie O, lost in the shuffle is veteran rhymer Rah Digga. The Dirty Harriet star recently headlined an all-ladies lineup in Los Angeles and next month she’ll bring her talents to Brooklyn for a “Ladies First” show at Southpaw , alongside underground Toronto lyricist Eternia. “To be honest, if you’re an artist and you’re just into the music, all that [beef] stuff is irrelevant,” Digga told Mixtape Daily. “All that stuff they’re fighting for has nothing to do with making good music or being an artist. It is what it is. It’s a fight about being a popular celebrity. It has nothing to do with music. And I don’t get caught up in that and I don’t deal with anybody in it.” Instead, the New Jersey native continues to craft her well-received bars. The former Flipmode Squad member put out her Nottz-produced Classic LP last year, which was the first album by Digga since her 2000 debut. In the time elapsed since Dirty Harriet, the roaring female MC took up another trade and learned film editing at Manhattan’s New York Film Academy. Now, with backing from a new label, Raw Koncept, and one release already out, Digga promises a follow-up (and mixtape) are coming sooner than expected. “[ Classic ] was just an album that I wanted to do,” she explained. “I didn’t have any A&Rs in my ears. I put it out with Nottz and there it was. I think a lot of artists really don’t have that luxury, ’cause they’re too busy having to follow the label protocol and stuff. It’s one thing when you’re coming into the game and making music and trying to find your footing in the industry, per se. So you roll with the punches, which is part of what I did with Dirty Harriet. Not the music. But the ‘I don’t care about going platinum in the first week.’ I had other stipulations that I wasn’t budging from. “You won’t have to wait another 10 years, I promise,” Digga added about her follow-up. Is Rock Dead?

Rock bands had a hard time breaking through in 2010, but our critics say indie groups like Vampire Weekend might be nirvana for the genre. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Getty Images There was a time not long ago when good-old fashioned meat-and-potatoes rockers like Nickelback, Hinder and Disturbed frequently landed albums in the top 10 and reeled off solid chart singles. Then came a new generation of bands like MGMT, Vampire Weekend and Arcade Fire who were heralded as the saviors of a limping-along genre that had been overtaken by pop cuties like Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. “In 2010, we just didn’t see the people like the MGMTs, who potentially could have taken over the top from being a great niche artist to being a pop sensation [take off],” said Noah Callahan-Bever, editor-in-chief of Complex magazine, addressing the psychedelic duo’s confounding, sometimes confusing second album, Congratulations. But maybe it was just an off year and, as Elliott Wilson, founder and CEO of Rap Radar suggested, we’re due for the kind of musical flushing of the pipes we experienced back in 1991 with the rise of Nirvana. Back then, music was emerging from an era of spandex and lipstick rule by a generation of hair-metal bands like Poison and M

Eminem, Jay-Z’s Leaked Track ‘Syllables’ Was Recorded In 2007

‘I think it was going to be for one of Em’s albums or Detox,’ Cashis, who is also featured on the cut, says. By James Dinh Eminem and Jay-Z Photo: Kristian Dowling/ Getty Images Heads were scratched when a dated, top-notch collaboration between some of hip-hop’s biggest MCs, including Eminem, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent and Stat Quo , surfaced in the blogosphere yesterday. And while deliberate (and unintentional) leaks happen all the time, it was odd that nobody had ever heard of the all-star cut entitled “Syllables.” However, Cashis, another one of the track’s featured rappers, gave fans some insight into the track in an interview with Vibe.com , admitting his excitement as a then-newly signed artist to collaborate alongside rap icons. “I laid my part at Dre’s studio with Stat, 50 and Em,” Cashis recalls of the track, which talks of the industry’s lack of lyrical substance and its reliance on gimmicks. “I heard that Jay had just left when I got there. Fif’ was there kicking his verse in another room when I did mine.” But the MC, who had just been signed to Shady Records at the time, confessed that he wasn’t nervous to spit alongside the hip-hop heavyweights. “I was more so excited than intimidated because I already had held my own with Em, and I think they believed in me this time. After I kicked my verse, Em, Dre and 50 all said it was dope. That was the cosign I needed. I learned more from that session than any other before that.” While Cashis isn’t sure whether the “Syllables” leak was authorized by his label or not, the Slim Shady prot

Rupert Everett Lambasts Hollywood, "Tasteless" Jennifer Aniston Movies

Actor Rupert Everett is not shy about expressing himself … or naming names if he’s bitter enough about who becomes a star and who doesn’t. Speaking to BBC Radio 4 about how homosexuals fare in Hollywood, the interview eventually turned to the question of audience perception. Rupert argued that no matter what fans may think, the industry decides who will become A-list. How else to you explain Jennifer Aniston?! The Switch? The Bounty Hunter?! Come on! “If you look and analyze the careers of many, many, many stars, you’ll find that they’re mostly sustained by the business,” he said. “I’m not going to start naming names of people whose films have not succeeded at the box office, but you’ll find lots of women and lots of men that the powers that be determine are right and they’ll stand with them for quite a long time.” “Jennifer Aniston will have so many absolute flops, but she’s still a member of that club, and like a star forming in the universe, things will swirl around her and it will suddenly solidify into another vital tasteless rom-com.” Oooookay … Rude? Bitter? You bet. Although The Switch , The Bounty Hunter, Love Happens and Management were pretty terrible, we’ll give him that. Marley & Me was a big hit, though, and Friends? One of the most popular shows in history. Plus, she married Brad Pitt and has that hair. In the end, you don’t have to be a professional critic to observe correctly that Jen has made some bad movies. But there is an audience. If they weren’t profitable, why would they continue to be made? Rom-coms may be tasteless, but they’re cheap to produce. Cha. Ching. Maybe she’s riding her past successes a bit these days, but does she really deserve to be singled out like this? Go get a life, Rupert! Just don’t even get near her .

Teena Marie’s Influence Found In Mary J. Blige, Hip-Hop, More

Late soul veteran paved the way for several of today’s hitmakers. By Mawuse Ziegbe Teena Marie Photo: Larry Marano/Getty Images R&B great Teena Marie died over the weekend, but her enduring legacy can be found in the legions of soul stars who followed in her footsteps. Marie joined the iconic Motown label in the late ’70s and spent the next three decades building a reputation as a Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist with a gift for penning lyrics and belting with soulful abandon. Her influence — from her top-flight musicianship to her pioneering image as a white, female R&B artist — can be found in many of today’s hitmakers. Mary J. Blige The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul has pointed to Marie as an early influence when the budding superstar was coming up in her scrappy Yonkers, New York, neighborhood. “Tina Mari inspired me vocally as a child. Her songs I sang in the mirror with a hair brush. I’m so hurt,” she tweeted on Sunday. “I’ll love u forever Tina Mari. Portuguese Love, Casanova Brown, Square Biz, I need your lovin, all of your music will live forever through me. In my heart she’s Tina, So rest in peace Tina, i love u. Every girl that grew up in the hood , with her blasting through the windows, Cars and radio waves can Feel me.” Faith Evans Like Marie, former Bad Boy singer Faith Evans boasts a bold voice and a headline-making relationship with a labelmate and music icon. Marie hooked up with Motown funk architect Rick James early in her career and would go on to spark a romance with the R&B great. James also served as a mentor to Marie, and the two teamed up for memorable collaborations such as James’ Street Songs jam “Fire and Desire.” In addition to churning out soulful hits with Bad Boy, Evans is known for marrying Brooklyn MC Notorious B.I.G. soon after meeting her charismatic labelmate. Marie has even commented on the similarities between the two vocalists in the bio for the soul legend’s 2009 album, Congo Square, which featured their collabo “Can’t Last a Day.” “I’ve always loved Faith and her vocal style. She reminds me of me. Her correlation with Biggie — having a career with him and without him — reminds me of me and Rick,” she said. “I feel like she’s a younger me. Of the younger ladies, she’s the one I love most.” Alicia Keys Marie was also a masterful musician, often manning everything from the keyboards to guitar on her albums and heading behind the boards as a producer. She helped establish a blueprint for female R&B stars who are actively involved in various aspects of the production process, such as pianist and producer Alicia Keys, who tweeted after Marie’s death, “God bless Teena Marie & her Family!Sending Blessings &prayers I was jus sayin tht fire & desire is 1 of the most beautifully performd songs!” Pink Marie’s race was somewhat controversial when she first debuted on Motown as a white woman belting soul-stirring R&B. Her picture was left off the album packaging her first LP, and many fans assumed Lady T was another new black artist making her mark in the R&B scene. However, she was ultimately accepted because of her undeniable talent and conviction in her voice. She has paved the way for many contemporary artists such as Joss Stone and Pink, who initially hit the scene with an R&B-tinged sound. After hearing of Marie’s death, Pink re-tweeted a missive from Go-Go’s bassist Kathy Valentine that read, “THIS SUCKS– heard that Teena Marie passed away. RIP. she was an original and one of a kind. sad.” As Marie told Essence in 2009, “I’m a black artist with white skin. At the end of the day you have to sing what’s in your own soul.” Hip-Hop While she made her name as a soul veteran, Marie’s music has popped up in hip-hop cuts from many of the game’s finest lyricists. Marie’s 1981 jam “Square Biz” was revamped for rap supergroup the Firm’s (Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ, Nature, Cormega) 1997 single “Firm Biz,” and Mase reworked the track’s jocular bass line for the Harlem World album cut “Love U So.” The chorus for the Fugees’ 1996 smash “Fu-Gee-La” features similar crooning to Marie’s hit “Ooo La La La” from the 1988 album Naked to the World. Even hip-hop stars who may not have reimagined Marie’s catalog for their own hits, such as Game , Big Boi and ?uestlove , recalled Marie’s influence and legacy on Twitter.
