‘World’s Biggest’ Forest Protection Deal for Canada

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science_and_environment/10123210.stm Timber companies and environment groups including Greenpeace, Canopy, and ForestEthics have unveiled an agreement aimed at protecting two-thirds of Canada's vast forests from unsustainable logging. Over 72 million hectares are included in what will become the world's largest commercial forest conservation deal. Logging will be totally banned on some of the land, in the hope of sustaining endangered caribou populations. Timber companies hope the deal will bring commercial gains, as timber buyers seek higher ethical standards. The total protected area is about twice the size of Germany, and equals the area of forest lost globally between 1990 and 2005. “The importance of this agreement cannot be overstated,” said Avrim Lazar, president and CEO of the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC). “We're thrilled that this effort has led to the largest commercial forest conservation plan in history,” said Steve Kallick of Pew Environment Group. “Together we have identified a more intelligent, productive way to manage economic and environmental challenges in the Boreal [Forest] that will reassure global buyers of our products' sustainability.” The Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement (CBFA) brings together FPAC's 21 member companies and nine environment groups, many of which have fought a bitter battle against what they have sometimes criticised as rapacious logging. As part of the agreement, those groups have agreed to suspend criticism of the industry and calls for boycotts. The Pew Environment Group, which has worked for about a decade on trying to “green” Canada's forestry, said it was “excited” by the agreement. “We're thrilled that this effort has led to the largest commercial forest conservation plan in history, which could not have happened without both sides looking beyond their differences,” said Steve Kallick, director of Pew's International Boreal Conservation Campaign. Pew notes that the total area covered by the deal is larger than in some agreements currently feted as global leaders, such as the Brazilian Amazon Region Protected Areas project. Throughout the protected lands – which run right across the country from the Pacific to the Atlantic coasts – companies and environment groups are pledging to work together to implement “world-leading forest management and harvesting practices”. The effects of forest protection on wildlife, particularly caribou, will be monitored; and timber will be certified as coming from sustainable sources. Pew believes the agreement could be a template for future forest agreements in other parts of the world, as industry leaders respond to an increasingly environmentally-aware public. “There is a recognition that this is how forestry will be done in the 21st Century, and there's a great interest in getting ahead of the rest of the industry,” Mr Kallick told BBC News. The agreement at present covers companies and environment groups; both parties are looking now for backing and reinforcement from governments. In the Canadian system that means the national and provincial authorities, and “First Nation” governments of indigenous groups, some of which have already indicated their support. added by: captainplanet71

Solar Hints At Guru’s ‘Frustration’ With Gang Starr’s DJ Premier

‘Certain aspects of Gang Starr and that relationship seemed to keep hanging on to him,’ Solar tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Gang Starr’s Guru and DJ Premier Photo: Gregg Delman/ MTV.com The last album Guru and DJ Premier released as Gang Starr was 2003’s The Ownerz, and the rapper began recording with a new producer named Solar. As the years wore on, whispers of tension between Guru and Primo grew louder until they were reportedly fully estranged from each other, both musically and as friends. Premier, for his part, had kept mostly quiet about any conflict between himself and his former groupmate, who died at age 43 last week. Solar, however, told MTV News that Guru might have felt frustrated by the public overlooking his contributions to Gang Starr, one of hip-hop’s most revered acts. Solar said he doesn’t want to sound critical of Premier, though, because he hasn’t spoken to the DJ in years and never knew his take on things between the pair. “I haven’t spoken to Premier, all the way back since they finished The Ownerz, ” Solar told MTV News. “We haven’t spoken. He hasn’t reached out to me, and I haven’t had the opportunity to reach out to him. What it’s been, more or less, with Guru, there’s been a lot of frustration on his part for various reasons once 7 Grand [Records] was started, it became … I don’t know, just certain aspects of Gang Starr and that relationship seemed to keep hanging on to him, and he felt it was dragging him down or holding him from getting to where he wanted to get, and it was influences that he felt around the industry was contributing to that. And I know that was a source a frustration for him and a source of frustration for myself. I felt the tension too.” Solar added that he didn’t want to be in the middle of any conflict between the longtime collaborators, during Guru’s life or now in his death. He emphasized that although he was privy to Guru’s feelings on the matter, it would be unfair for him to take the rapper’s opinions as fact since he hasn’t spoke to Premier. Solar did reveal that Guru was “definitely going through a crisis and having some trouble.” “Guru was frustrated, he really was,” Solar said. “And I think anybody around him at that time, Premier and all his people around him, might have saw the frustration around him. [Guru] was drinking, there was a lot of things going on with him that you could see, from anybody.” In the meantime, Solar is in the early stages of planning a memorial concert for Guru, which is tentatively slated for the summer. He said he’d like Premier and all the members of the original Gang Starr Foundation involved in the process. It remains unclear if Premier would be open to such a tribute. During his radio show on Sirius/XM last week, Premier disparaged Solar numerous times on air, criticizing his handling of Guru’s condition and refusing to acknowledge the producer by name. Premier issued a statement after Guru’s passing and didn’t directly address Guru’s controversial farewell letter , in which he allegedly had sour thoughts about his former DJ. Ice Cube Celebrates The West Coast On New Single ‘I Rep That West’

MC calls upcoming I Am the West album ‘West Coast hip-hop without any apologies.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Ice Cube Photo: MTV News Ice Cube premiered his new single, “I Rep That West,” Monday afternoon (April 26) on his website , and like many of the veteran rapper’s past efforts, the former N.W.A member is taking names and snarling at sucker MCs on the track. “South Central, home of so much potential/ But if you go there, the warfare is mental,” he raps over the synth-heavy production. The song is the lead offering from Cube’s forthcoming project, I Am the West. The album — slated for July — is his ninth solo album and first release since 2008’s Raw Footage. While on a promotional run for the project recently, Cube made headlines for what many perceived as a dis toward his former groupmate Dr. Dre on the I Am the West street track “Drinks the Kool-Aid.” Cube denied the allegations, and in a blog post, he revealed that he was reuniting with Dre for tracks that would appear on his new album. The mishap, however, created interest in his project, and Cube admitted that all the buzz got him excited. While in New York last week to promote his ESPN 30 for 30 documentary “Straight Outta L.A.,” Cube spoke to MTV News about his music and the incident, which occurred during the Paid Dues Tour. “It feels good,” he said of the attention. “That’s what it’s all about. I’m always an MC that likes to stir the pot a little bit. I don’t think you should rhyme for the sake of riddlin’, that’s what Chuck [D] said. I’m excited that people are excited about it. It’s a good record. I got production from Dre, even Sir Jinx got down. If anybody looked at the credits from my old records, we used to get down a lot. To me, it’s a record that should be anticipated. The lyrics are fire, the beats are right, and it’s West Coast hip-hop without any apologies. “The West Coast has been trying to figure out ‘What does the industry want from us?’ for the last 12 years,” he continued. “No more figuring out: We do what we wanna do. And people are gonna like it or not.” What do you think about Ice Cube’s statement about West Coast hip-hop? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Ice Cube

Kate Plus 8 Reloaded: It’s a Go!

Kate Gosselin’s elimination from Dancing with the Stars did not mark the end of her reality TV career. It’s official: TLC is bringing back Kate Plus 8 . It’s a go at the network after the local Department of Labor says the eight children have been cleared to continue their careers as reality TV stars. This despite the objections of her own brother , Jon Gosselin and millions of us across America who are just plain sick of her. Stick it to ’em, Kate! A rep for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry says the correct paperwork for the show was submitted and approved … and said: “The proper steps have been taken and the kids are permitted for Kate Plus 8 .” Thank goodness. And tough luck, Jon. How’s your career going? KATE PLUS 8 : Gosselin and the gang are running it back! No word if the reloaded Kate Plus 8 will feature Jon in any way, as he was the one who axed the original show for starting to phase him out exploiting the kids. Our guess is for the right price, he won’t object this time around. Especially if he succeeds in pursuing a rich cougar to bleed money and sexual favors from. As for Kate’s other TLC spin-off (yes, there are two proposed Kate Gosselin shows in the works), tentatively titled Twist of Kate, no paperwork has been filed. Without the Department of Labor signing off, you can bet that TLC won’t push its luck. So this may indicate that the children may not be joining her there. Are you excited for Kate Plus 8 2.0 apparently coming back?

Jack Johnson Hopes To Make Every Day Earth Day On Upcoming Tour

‘I never thought of it as trying to save the word so much as trying not to ruin it,’ singer says of green-friendly tour. By James Montgomery Jack Johnson Photo: MTV News For Jack Johnson, environmentalism has always been second nature. Born in Hawaii, he followed in his father’s footsteps and took to the waves at an early age, eventually becoming the youngest surfer to ever make the finals at the legendary Pipeline Masters event on Oahu’s North Shore. And with that involvement in surfing came a keen awareness of not just the ocean, but the land as well. Which is why, when he switched gears and became a musician, he also quickly latched on to environmental groups like the Surfrider Foundation and Heal the Ocean. After all, it just made sense. “It kind of all started back when I could first fill up a room with people, when it was a couple hundred people, I started getting asked by Surfrider Foundation, Heal the Ocean, Heal the Bay — different groups like that — if I would help doing fundraisers for them,” Johnson said. “And when that started, I realized you could use music to gather people to raise awareness or to raise funds, and we took that little spark and started rolling with it.” Johnson and his wife would go on to start the Kokua Hawaii foundation, a nonprofit aimed at educating students on the concept of environmentalism. Every year he also organizes the Kokua Festival in Hawaii, a green-friendly event that raises awareness (and funds) for his foundation (Kokua 2010 will be held Friday and Saturday). And from his early days as a touring musician, he’s been determined to make his concerts as environmentally friendly as possible. “Once we started doing this fest in Hawaii, [we started] learning ways we could lessen the negative impact of a show by using biodiesel, water stations, recycling bins, all the little things you could do to lessen the negative impact,” he explained. “And then started to see how you could expand on the positive impact by having local nonprofit groups at every venue you play, so as the people from that town are coming to the shows, they can get on mailing lists. Money from that show can go to those groups, so after you leave the town, it was actually beneficial you were there because it starts the positive work.” So truly, for him, every day is Earth Day. And when he hits the road later this summer in support of his To the Sea album , he’ll continue with a trend he started on his last tour: donating 100 percent of all proceeds to local nonprofits with a green bend. Much like everything he does, it just seemed like second nature. “The venue has to agree to do carbon offsets, there have to be recycling stations there … I never thought of it as trying to save the world so much as trying not to ruin it. Doing what you can to be responsible with the industry you’re in. Trying to better it,” he said. “We take 100 percent of our proceeds from the night and donate that to nonprofit groups that are doing really positive work, because then, it’s much better that we tour, because it’s not just lessening the impact, we try to grow the positive.” What do you think of Jack Johnson keeping his shows green-friendly? MPAA ‘Pitching Fit’ Over Box-Office Futures

The full lobbying force of Hollywood has landed on Capitol Hill, where legislators are hearing alllll about regulatory approval of box-office futures trading. Both major exchanges have met with approval so far, with Cantor Fitzgerald getting a green light on Tuesday. The MPAA, meanwhile, continued to rail against what a statement called “a risky online-wagering service that would be detrimental to the motion picture industry and the 2.4 million Americans whose livelihoods are based on this industry.” Do I count? I hope not; I totally plan to short-sell Robin Hood . [ THR ]
