Cheney’s push of deregulators led to BP disaster

Lobbyists & Executives in charge of regulation. "no bad whores, just bad laws"

SEX workers have rallied in Sydney to demand an end to “whore-phobic” attitudes and greater protection under anti-discrimination laws. Chanting “sex worker rights are human rights” and “no bad whores, just bad laws”, dozens of protesters marched from the Opera House today in a bid to have their rights recognised. Many carried red umbrellas, a symbol of the global movement, while others made statements with T-shirts reading “whore power” and “sluts unite”. “We are human beings, we are people, we do a job and we are continually vilified for that job,” sex worker Julie Bates said, noting that little had changed in the way of community attitudes during her 30-year career. “So whilst we remained silenced, today is a chance for us to speak to the community, so we have a voice. “What we want society to see is that sex work is real damn hard work, and we provide a service like any other industry.” Organised by the Scarlet Alliance, a peak body representing the nation's estimated 20,000 sex workers, the event was one of several staged in capital cities across the country to commemorate International Whores Day. The alliance is using the occasion to lobby state governments for amendments to existing legislation that covers the industry. The campaign focuses on New South Wales, which has the highest concentration of sex workers – about 8000 – yet has inferior anti-discrimination laws compared with other parts of the nation. In the ACT, Queensland and Tasmania, legislation protects against discrimination based on legal sexual activity or occupation, essentially giving mistreated sex workers an avenue for recourse. The most common instances of discrimination reported to the alliance occur during applications for rental properties, bank loans and credit cards. Sex workers are also forced to pay up to five times more than other advertisers in newspapers, and encounter problems when dealing with police and the judicial system, the alliance said. It was often seen when women lost custody cases because of negative stereotypes associated with their jobs. Alliance president Elena Jeffreys said part of the problem stemmed from deep-rooted attitudes within government and mainstream institutions. “They think that sex workers are not part of the community,” she told AAP. “We are absolutely sick of whore-phobic attitudes. “Sex work is legalised, decriminalised, brothels are run in a professional and transparent manner, and sex workers are huge contributors to society, yet we face this discrimination every single day. “It's absolutely untenable and we demand that it be changed.” added by: diode

Thank You

Dad’s remarks from last night… “Thank you for coming here on this beautiful Arizona evening. My friends, we have come to the end of a long journey. The American people have spoken, and they have spoken clearly.” “A little while ago, I had the honor of calling Senator Barack Obama to congratulate him. To congratulate him on being elected the next president of the country that we both love. In a contest as long and difficult as this campaign has been, his success alone commands my respect for his ability and perseverance. But that he managed to do so by inspiring the hopes of so many millions of Americans who had once wrongly believed that they had little at stake or little influence in the election of an American president is something I deeply admire and commend him for achieving. This is an historic election, and I recognize the special significance it has for African-Americans and for the special pride that must be theirs tonight.” “I’ve always believed that America offers opportunities to all who have the industry and will to seize it. Senator Obama believes that, too. But we both recognize that, though we have come a long way from the old injustices that once stained our nation’s reputation and denied some Americans the full blessings of American citizenship, the memory of them still had the power to wound.” “A century ago, President Theodore Roosevelt’s invitation of Booker T. Washington to dine at the White House was taken as an outrage in many quarters. America today is a world away from the cruel and frightful bigotry of that time. There is no better evidence of this than the election of an African-American to the presidency of the United States.” “Let there be no reason now for any American to fail to cherish their citizenship in this, the greatest nation on Earth. Senator Obama has achieved a great thing for himself and for his country. I applaud him for it, and offer him my sincere sympathy that his beloved grandmother did not live to see this day. Though our faith assures us she is at rest in the presence of her creator and so very proud of the good man she helped raise.” “Senator Obama and I have had and argued our differences, and he has prevailed. No doubt many of those differences remain. These are difficult times for our country. And I pledge to him tonight to do all in my power to help him lead us through the many challenges we face. I urge all Americans who supported me to join me in not just congratulating him, but offering our next president our good will and earnest effort to find ways to come together to find the necessary compromises to bridge our differences and help restore our prosperity, defend our security in a dangerous world, and leave our children and grandchildren a stronger, better country than we inherited.” “Whatever our differences, we are fellow Americans. And please believe me when I say no association has ever meant more to me than that. It’s natural, tonight, to feel some disappointment. But tomorrow, we must move beyond it and work together to get our country moving again. We fought – we fought as hard as we could. And though we fell short, the failure is mine, not yours.” “I am so deeply grateful to all of you for the great honor of your support and for all you have done for me. I wish the outcome had been different, my friends. The road was a difficult one from the outset, but your support and friendship never wavered. I cannot adequately express how deeply indebted I am to you.” “I’m especially grateful to my wife, Cindy, my children, my dear mother and all my family, and to the many old and dear friends who have stood by my side through the many ups and downs of this long campaign. I have always been a fortunate man, and never more so for the love and encouragement you have given me. You know, campaigns are often harder on a candidate’s family than on the candidate, and that’s been true in this campaign. All I can offer in compensation is my love and gratitude and the promise of more peaceful years ahead.” “I am also, of course, very thankful to Governor Sarah Palin, one of the best campaigners I have ever seen, and an impressive new voice in our party for reform and the principles that have always been our greatest strength… her husband Todd and their five beautiful children… for their tireless dedication to our cause, and the courage and grace they showed in the rough and tumble of a presidential campaign. We can all look forward with great interest to her future service to Alaska, the Republican Party and our country.” “To all my campaign comrades, from Rick Davis and Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter, to every last volunteer who fought so hard and valiantly, month after month, in what at times seemed to be the most challenged campaign in modern times, thank you so much. A lost election will never mean more to me than the privilege of your faith and friendship.” “I don’t know what more we could have done to try to win this election. I’ll leave that to others to determine. Every candidate makes mistakes, and I’m sure I made my share of them. But I won’t spend a moment of the future regretting what might have been.” “This campaign was and will remain the great honor of my life, and my heart is filled with nothing but gratitude for the experience and to the American people for giving me a fair hearing before deciding that Senator Obama and my old friend Senator Joe Biden should have the honor of leading us for the next four years.” “I would not be an American worthy of the name should I regret a fate that has allowed me the extraordinary privilege of serving this country for a half a century. Today, I was a candidate for the highest office in the country I love so much. And tonight, I remain her servant. That is blessing enough for anyone, and I thank the people of Arizona for it.” “Tonight, more than any night, I hold in my heart nothing but love for this country and for all its citizens, whether they supported me or Senator Obama – I wish Godspeed to the man who was my former opponent and will be my president. And I call on all Americans, as I have often in this campaign, to not despair of our present difficulties, but to believe, always, in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here.” “Americans never quit. We never surrender. We never hide from history. We make history. Thank you, and God bless you, and God bless America. Thank you all very much.”

Crystal Bowersox ‘Predicted’ Lee DeWyze Would Win ‘American Idol’

‘It was just a feeling I had, and, uh, I was right,’ she tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Crystal Bowersox Photo: MTV News There was a rather common misconception that, during her time on “American Idol,” dreadlocked dynamo Crystal Bowersox didn’t actually care about winning the show at all. So it seemed oddly fitting to many that she ended up finishing second, behind champ Lee DeWyze . But while Bowersox is fine with her runner-up status, she wants to make one thing abundantly clear: She always wanted to come out on top. “I wouldn’t have tried out if I didn’t think I had a shot at winning,” she told MTV News on Tuesday (June 1). “But it’s a weird confliction, because, to me, music shouldn’t be about competition; it’s about expression, it’s emotive, it’s all those things. But at the same time, the industry is a big competition and who can sell the most records. So it was a little strange for me, but I really tried to give it my best and sing songs I could relate to and that I thought other people could relate to. … I had a strategy.” And thanks to that strategy — and, you know, her prodigious voice — she kept advancing in the competition. But on the morning of the “Idol” finale, she had an epiphany: No matter how hard she had worked, DeWyze was going to win. “I tried not to think about it too much, but Wednesday morning, I woke up, and I had a strange, calm feeling. In my mind, I predicted Lee to win. … And whatever reason that’s based on, it was just a feeling I had, and, uh, I was right,” she smiled. “And I was prepared for that. I was OK with whatever happened, and I gave the whole thing my best shot, and I’m cool with number two, you know? We’re both going to be really successful, and I’m really proud of Lee.” One week later, Bowersox is still happy DeWyze won — “he’s worked really hard … I think he’s great and he deserved it,” she said — and she wouldn’t have traded one second of her time on “Idol” for anything in the world, no matter what you may have read about her during her time on the show. It was, she said, one of the most fateful decisions of her life, and she’s incredibly grateful for the opportunities it’s already provided for her — especially since there was a time, not too long ago, when she never would’ve auditioned. “I mean, I’m surprised I even got in! I figured that when they saw me at the stadium auditions, they’d be like, ‘Who’s this girl? She looks like she came off the street!’ ” she said. “I’m blessed that I’ve made it as far as I have. … Before the show, a lot of people had been like, ‘Oh, try out for “Idol”!’ and I said, ‘No, it’s not my thing.’ But since the show allowed instruments — thank goodness they did that, or else I wouldn’t be here — I decided to give it a shot. And, yeah, I’m grateful I did.” Were you surprised Crystal didn’t come out on top? Let us know in the comments! T.I. Explains Inspiration Behind F— A Mixtape Title

Tip tells Mixtape Daily that the controversial name is ‘in no way a direct shot to a DJ.’ By Shaheem Reid T.I. Photo: Atlantic The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive T.I. said he isn’t dissing mixtape DJs or making a disparaging statement about the mixtape circuit by naming his new street project F— a Mixtape. Rather, the King of the South said, he’s actually going up against people who tried to discourage him from making a mixtape at this point in his multiplatinum, Grammy-winning career. “F— a mixtape” was a common response T.I. got when he started telling people that he was, in fact, going to drop a mixtape before he put out his King Uncaged LP, due in August. Some felt Tip should just focus on the album, while others thought he should do a film. Nah. Tip wanted to give back to the streets. “There’s so many songs I have recorded [for King Uncaged ],” he told Mixtape Daily earlier this week in NYC. “I already have 60, 70 songs. A lot of these songs are period pieces that speak volumes to what’s going on right now. If I hold onto them next year or the year after, they’ll be dated, because my life will be in another direction. If I’m not gonna put it on the album — and they all can’t make the album — then they might as well have another platform to present it to the world. Me, myself, personally, I feel that although I haven’t done mixtapes, it’s not ’cause I can’t. It’s ’cause I have so many other pressing issues that are on my plate, I have chose to work on that. ” F— a Mixtape, that’s in no way a direct shot to a DJ. ‘Cause for other people, [a mixtape] works wonders. It do what it’s supposed to do,” he added. “For me, I do what I need to do. That’s a common knowledge around the industry. I got enough music to go around. I can drop a song a day three or five years straight and still be cool. But F— a Mixtape, it got the response it was supposed to get. It got people thinking, it got people talking, and it generated a demand.” F— a Mixtape is co-hosted by DJ Drama and DJ MLK and features guest appearances from Lil Wayne, Mike Bigga, Young Jeezy, MacBoney and Tip’s cousin Rich Kid Rashad. Jamie Foxx appears on the tape’s intro, and Lil Duval and Kevin Hart do skits and interludes. Meanwhile, Swizz Beatz, Lil C, Smash Factory and DJ Toomp are among the producers. Meet the Man Who Made the Oil Industry Possible

Looking for the person who may ultimately be to blame for the massive oil spill in the Gulf ? Well, may I introduce to you Mr. Edwin Drake . Sure, judging from his grainy, black-and-white photograph, he doesn’t seem like much of a culprit, but we have Drake to thank for the rise of nearly the entire US oil industry. Despite his original career as a train conductor, Drake would eventually be regarded as being responsible for revolutionizing the fledgling “rock oil” business with his game-cha… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Meth, Porn Used by Offshore Drilling Agency Staff

WASHINGTON – Staff members at an agency that oversees offshore drilling accepted tickets to sports events, lunches and other gifts from oil and gas companies and used government computers to view pornography, according to an Interior Department report alleging a culture of cronyism between regulators and the industry. In at least one case, an inspector for the Minerals Management Service admitted using crystal methamphetamine and said he might have been under the influence of the drug the next day at work, according to the report by the acting inspector general of the Interior Department. The report cites a variety of violations of federal regulations and ethics rules at the agency's Louisiana office. Previous inspector general investigations have focused on inappropriate behavior by the royalty-collection staff in the agency's Denver office. The report adds to the climate of frustration and criticism facing the Obama administration in the monthlong oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, although it covers actions before the spill. Millions of gallons of oil are gushing into the Gulf, endangering wildlife and the livelihoods of fishermen, as scrutiny intensifies on a lax regulatory climate. The report began as a routine investigation, the acting inspector general, Mary Kendall, said in a cover letter to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, whose department includes the agency. “Unfortunately, given the events of April 20 of this year, this report had become anything but routine, and I feel compelled to release it now,” she wrote. Her biggest concern is the ease with which minerals agency employees move between industry and government, Kendall said. While no specifics were included in the report, “we discovered that the individuals involved in the fraternizing and gift exchange — both government and industry — have often known one another since childhood,” Kendall said. Their relationships took precedence over their jobs, Kendall said. The report follows a 2007 investigation that revealed what then-Inspector General Earl Devaney called a “culture of ethical failure” and conflicts of interest at the minerals agency. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100525/ap_on_bi_ge/us_gulf_oil_spill_washington added by: JohnA

Megan Fox Opens Up About Michael Bay, ‘Transformers’ In 2009 Interview

‘You get addicted to the Bay-hem,’ Fox tells MTV News of shooting blockbusters vs. ‘quieter’ films. By Eric Ditzian Megan Fox Photo: MTV News Depending on whom you believe, either “Transformers 3” filmmakers dropped Megan Fox from the upcoming film or the actress up and quit the production of her own accord. What is clear is that Fox and director Michael Bay have long formed an uneasy creative partnership. “Working with Michael Bay is not about an acting experience,” Fox once said. Bay didn’t let such statements fly by without a response: “Nobody in the world knew about Megan Fox until I found her and put her in ‘Transformers.’ ” Before their working relationship fell apart — last summer, when “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” had torn up the box office and Fox was busy promoting her horror flick “Jennifer’s Body” — the actress spoke openly with MTV News about working with Bay. She spoke about his directorial style, doing stunt work and her confidence as a professional. For the first time, here is Megan Fox, in her own words, on all these things and more. On Making Big-Budget Blockbusters “You get addicted to those big action movies. You get addicted to the Bay-hem. You step away from it, and you’re relieved and you’re relaxed and you do something that’s quieter and you feel like you’re really working on it and you’re fleshing out and figuring things out. But then you sort of miss that abuse.” On Bay as a Director “[‘Jennifer’s Body’] wasn’t so fast-paced and it wasn’t so constantly chaotic [as ‘Transformers’]. … Continuity is a big part of film. Things need to match from previous scenes, because you shoot everything out of order. ‘Transformers,’ there’s no continuity in that movie at all.” On What’s Surprising About Bay “He actually has a really good sense of humor. You’d never know that about him, but he’s really funny, so he could do a comedy if he wanted to.” On Doing Stunts “I love physical stuff. That makes the acting part easier for me. If you’re throwing someone around or getting thrown around, or if you’re efforting that much or hurting yourself, you don’t have to feign the process. I enjoy that.” On Her Behavior During a Movie Shoot “I never cause problems on set. I become like a vampire, and I hide in my hotel room.” On Confidence and Failure “It’s easy to be confident when you’ve never failed before. Then you try something and you’re not good at it, or you fail or you suck or people have something sh–ty to say, and then you are a little less secure. Or at least that’s how it works with me. I think that’s how it works with most people in this industry.” On Her Hopes for the Future “I have aspirations to keep working and keep improving. I don’t have a specific type of movie that I want to do or a specific director I want to work with. I just want to keep working.” What do you think of Fox’s comments about Bay and the “Transformers” franchise? Let us know in the comments.
