Optimism & The Art Of Facing Your Fears

See the original post here:

Last night, as I was getting ready for bed, I happened to stumble upon the most recent Time Magazine, which features a cover article about whether or not optimism is a genetic trait. After flipping through the magazine, I was struck by The Optimism Bias and how much people tend to not think about the genetic value of their thoughts. I’ve always been a glass-half-full type of person. Even as a child, I remember being described by adjectives such as “sunny” or “bubbly,” something that I feel has followed me throughout my life as a model of what I aspire to be: free of doubt and full of dreams. However, despite these reminders, I had never realized that the strong hope and open-mindedness I possessed for life might be part of my core being. In my continual thoughts on this topic on the train and subsequent subway ride over here, I looked around at my fellow passengers and saw many grim expressions among the crowd. It might be because it was early in the morning (completely understandable!), but there did not seem to be an air of optimism about the day in the sea of faces, despite the new beginning that happened with the sun rising. While there are definitely factors such as stress and the time of day that contributed to my observations, I still could not help thinking that a bit of laughter or smiles might have improved the moods of the passengers, thus adding an air of friendliness to the morning commute. While friendliness and optimism do not necessarily correlate, the art of smiling and expressing upbeat emotions can definitely contribute to one’s self-esteem and internal optimism. I recently spent a few short months in Europe and noticed a more open air of communication that seemed to point toward a culture more focused on sharing their internal selves, which may or may not be predisposed to “rose-colored glasses.” Part of the reason I have been examining optimism in the world around me and in my own life is because of the Time Magazine article, as well as a review of an upcoming book called My Year With Eleanor which explores some of the same ideas, but with a twist. The author of this memoir, Noelle Hancock, was stuck in a rut in her late 20′s when she came upon a quote by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt in a coffee shop which said, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” A lightbulb went off in her head at that moment and Noelle from then on was on a mission to add one thing that she was scared to do to every subsequent day, including public speaking and even swimming with sharks. This inspired the optimistic, glass-half-full part of me because even in her late 20′s, when most of us have formed a set identity, she chose to make significant changes to who she had become. The idea that life is a canvas, something that can be constantly added to and tweaked is an interesting way to look at the path that one is on, since it can be constantly rerouted and in transition. Optimism is important to note from this upcoming memoir because while Noelle might just have forward-thinking in her blood, there was also a sense that she took charge of her life because she knew in her heart that she had more courage than was normally displayed. Through looking at her life as an open-book, full of numerous possibilities, she found the optimism that comes with securing one’s future in hopes and dreams in a healthy way, which is definitely inspiring for every day life! 5 Ways To Make Life Transitions Easier While thinking about optimism, it’s important to be reminded that life may throw hurdles at you and there will always be challenges, but by thinking of life as continually changing an evolving, there is always a bright side that you’re yet to explore! Thinking back to The Optimism Bias and Noelle Hancock’s upcoming memoir (look for it starting June 7th!), you might have a genetic “bias” toward the sunny side of life, but as well, you might just have to dig deeper into yourself to discover the inner quotes that define the way you live your life. As with the yin and yang, with the good comes the bad – with the difficulties comes the inspiration to will yourself with change and optimism. I’m so glad I can finally write My Own Bieber Experience….

I’m so glad I can finally write My Own Bieber Experience. Justin Bieber is truly an amazing human being, he is my inspiration and I will love him until my heart stops beating, wait I joke, even till after that.  First of all, my name is Marisa. I live in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and I’m an admin of Justin Bieber Malaysia http://www.facebook.com/JustinBieberMalaysia  . So anyway, it was the 21 st  of April 2011, the day Justin Bieber was performing live here in my country. I couldn’t believe it, I was running back and forth when I woke up in the morning. I had to be at the stadium before 4pm for the meet and greets, so I went about 3.30 and hell, it was packed. At 4, I got my passes to meet Justin. I was holding it tight and my legs wouldn’t stop shaking. After a while, it was time, I went in with my friend, Clara who’s also an admin of Justin Bieber Malaysia and we were walking backstage in the rain and everyone was soaking wet. The worst thing was I had to pee real bad, I guess it was because I was nervous. As we walked backstage, we passed a room that said ‘MEET AND GREET’, my heart totally felt like jumping out. We all went into the room opposite the meet and greet to hear the rules and stuff then group 1 was good to go. I was in group 2 with Clara and I was going to meet my inspiration, I’ve love for 3 years now then I started tearing up and a few beliebers gave me hugs, they were such sweethearts. All a sudden we heard someone say “GROUP 2, YOU’RE UP” HOLY CRAP BATMAN. I was first to go in and from the outside I saw him, he was like punching and kicking around like in the gif he gave us all but anyway, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was already tearing up and then as I walked in, I heard  “No, don’t cry! You’re already wet.”  Justin Bieber was talking to me, ME, Marisa Soraya. I couldn’t believe my life. I replied  “Obviously, if you say that i am going to cry .” And he said  “Awwwww”  then he kissed my cheek,JUSTIN BIEBER KISSED MY LEFT CHEEK. The photographer took my picture and I went out crying next to Clara then we went our separate ways because we got different tickets. I was walking out to the VVIP section, crying as hell and all the guards that passed me thought I fell or broke a bone or something. I got into the VVIP line. The concert started at 8.30 and it was one of the best experience ever. After the concert, I went back to his hotel and he tweeted “off to shower then team dinner.” And there was only one famous restaurant there. So I went up to where it was and the next thing I know, I saw everyone. Dan, Scooter, Pattie, Alfredo, Justin, Selena, Mike, Legaci, Nick, EVERYONE but they were having dinner and I didn’t want to bother them . I took some pictures then left. It was really nice to actually see all of them with my own eyes.    This was the best bieber experience ever. Hopefully there will be more to come. I love you, Justin. Thanks for coming down to Malaysia! See the original post here: I’m so glad I can finally write My Own Bieber Experience….

My name’s Isabella and I’m from Adelaide, SA (the…

My name’s Isabella and I’m from Adelaide, SA (the second girl) & this is my Bieber experience. I use to sit on the computer for hours reading all these entries day dreaming about meeting Justin Bieber and I can’t believe I can finally write my experience! My friend told me to sign up for bieberfever.com and I did, we thought we would have a good chance at the m&g contest! The day before the concert, my friend and I sat there anxiously to get an email, we were up till 12am wondering if we would ever get one but sadly we didn’t receive anything. We went to bed disappointed but still had a bit of hope. The next day (day of the concert) at seven in the morning half asleep, I went to check to see if we had gotten any email, there was one unread message. I saw the subject saying ‘Congratulations you’ve just won’ MY HEART DROPPED. I woke up my friend and showed her. We were screaming and crying, I kept pinching myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming, I couldn’t believe it. I have loved Justin for SO long it, seriously felt like I was in a dream. Then about two hours before, we were nervously sitting at the entertainment center waiting to get our wristbands. Finally we got them, I was so nervous and so excited. I don’t think its possible to explain how I was feeling when the doors opened for the meet and greets . We all waited in this room and you could tell that everyone there was so scared. I sat there with my kangaroo, my customized Australian flag and my poster I made for him! The room started getting less full, and then it was our turn. I WAS SO NERVOUS, everything felt so fake. I was first in my group, so I gave my presents to the security and then turned around the door and saw him standing a few meters away half smiling. I seriously couldn’t believe what was happening, I didn’t believe it was him. I was trying to just be myself, smile, relax and NOT CRY. I walked up to him and gave him the biggest hug I’ve ever given to anyone and from what I can remember, I was like “Omg omg Justin I love you so much your my inspiration”. He did that cheeky smile and was like, “Thanks so much”. He was so much more perfect in real life, I think amazing is an understatement! I could tell he was tired because his flights were delayed and knowing I only had a minute, I was trying to make the most of it. He grabbed my hand after we took the photo, I held on so tight, I told him how much I loved him because I was in so much shock, I didn’t know what else to say! He was looking straight in to my eyes, rubbing my hand so delicately. Then it was time to go. I was so happy that my dream had finally came true and it’s true NEVER SAY NEVER . I got out the meet and greet room, fell to the floor and started crying and didn’t stop for two hours. In that short amount of time he seriously treated me better than any other guy ever has! So Justin if your reading this, I WANT YOU TO KNOW you are incredible, and so amazing you seriously have completed my life and I will never forget this experience. I will support you no matter what and you will always be my inspiration! -@belzyJBdefazio Read more from the original source: My name’s Isabella and I’m from Adelaide, SA (the…

Rick Ross Talks ‘Pandemonium’ And ‘Play Your Part’ Videos

‘We actually filmed three videos in one day,’ Ross boasts to MTV News about busy stretch, which also included DJ Khaled’s ‘Welcome to My Hood.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Since Rick Ross put together his new Maybach Music Group roster, the Bawse has been working overtime. Ross has been scooping up artists for his Warner Bros.-distributed MMG label, recording for the imprint’s first compilation ( Self Made, Vol.1 ) and filming music videos at a rapid pace. In an interview with MTV News, Ross spoke about his work ethic, boasting that he shot a trio of music videos within a 24-hour time span. Two of the clips — “Pandemonium,” featuring Ross’ new recruits Wale and Meek Mill, and “Play Your Part” — will appear on Self Made, Vol.1. “We actually filmed three videos in one day,” Ross said backstage at the New Orleans stop on Lil Wayne’s I Am Still Music Tour . “We filmed ‘Play Your Part’ and ‘Pandemonium.’ We actually filmed all the way until 7 a.m., until it was time to go shoot [DJ] Khaled’s ‘Welcome to My Hood’ .” For Rick, the inspiration behind “Pandemonium” was simple: “We started in the back, now we the MCs in the front, and that was the way that we all felt. You know, Meek Mill just being released from jail, his whole situation, his father being slain, just his whole story just [smelled] like triumph. Wale’s story and us all sitting in the room and us all believing in our abilities.” “Play Your Part” features Chester French frontman D.A. Wallach singing on the hook. “I sent him the track, and he put an incredible chorus on there and it was swagged out,” Ross said. “And when he came to the video, it was just the energy he brought. It was super cool.” Self Made, Vol.1 hits stores May 24. What do you think of Ross’ Maybach Music Group lineup? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Rick Ross (Hip-Hop)

Mike Myers Married Girlfriend Kelly Tisdale Five Months Ago

Actor’s rep just confirmed the private ceremony on Friday. By Aly Semigran Mike Myers Photo: MTV News Get ready to hear a whole lot of “International Man of Mystery” jokes. Comedic actor Mike Myers of the “Austin Powers” and “Shrek” franchises married his longtime girlfriend Kelly Tisdale in a private ceremony … five months ago. A rep for Myers confirmed the news to the New York Post ‘s Page Six that the 47-year-old “Saturday Night Live” alum wed Tisdale after roughly four years of dating. The rep told the newspaper that the under-the-radar ceremony for the secretive couple was “beautiful.” This marks the second marriage for Myers, who split from his wife of 12 years, writer/actress Robin Ruzan, in late 2005. Myers used Ruzan’s mother Linda as the inspiration for his popular “SNL” skit “Coffee Talk” and credited Ruzan herself for encouraging him to make the “Austin Powers” films. Tisdale and Myers began dating shortly after his split from Ruzan. Tisdale, who is said to be in her 30s, was previously romantically linked to musician Moby, with whom she founded the New York caf

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Video Is ‘Life Changing’

Choreographer Laurieanne Gibson opens up about Gaga’s vision for the song and video on ‘The Seven.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images Following Lady Gaga’s performance of “Born This Way” at the Grammy Awards on Sunday, fans are wondering what they will see in the Nick Knight-directed music video for the feel-good disco track. “I can’t tell you, but I will tell you it is a life-changing experience,” Gaga’s choreographer Laurieanne Gibson said on MTV’s ” The Seven .” “You can expect the highest level of execution in vocal music art and dance … but you will be shocked.” She didn’t specify if the video would be an extension of Gaga’s performance of Sunday night, but she did go into further detail about what she and Gaga and the entire Haus of Gaga had in mind when conceiving the idea for the unusual take on the song. “Well, actually it’s a vessel. When Gaga played me the record, it took me quite some time to feel the direction and the inspiration, and when she played it for me two weeks later, I was like, ‘I think I got it.’ I said, ‘We have to birth a new race, a race that cannot hate.’ And, of course, as genius as she is, she runs with it.” Gaga revealed that she spent 72 hours inside the vessel, and Gibson explained that precautions were taken to make sure she’d be safe in there. “We made sure the Lady was not suffocating with an oxygen tank in there while incubating, checking her new DNA, which was producing this new race,” she explained. “This race does not give up and does not give in. “When you try to break this performance down, it minimizes the message,” she added. “It’s about the vocal performance while dancing the amazing choreography. It feels like a standalone dance piece, a standalone theatrical moment. The organ that was our church moment, our freeing moment, a call to arms.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Rockets Up Billboard Charts

Instant-smash single is poised to debut at #1 on Hot 100. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Who didn’t see this one coming? Thanks to the pushed-up release date on Friday and the most talked-about entrance at Sunday night’s Grammys — not to mention what must have amounted to endless spins at clubs over the weekend — Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” is making some chart history. Billboard reported that after just three days of availability, the tune shot to a record-setting debut on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart at #14 and is poised to possibly debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week thanks to brisk digital sales. The first single from the album of the same name due on May 23 got 4,602 plays, which gives it the highest detections total by a debuting song in the chart’s 18-year history, representing an audience of 39.3 million. Citing unnamed sources, the magazine also reported that “Born” sold more than 450,000 downloads since its release on Friday morning, which could help the song debut at #1 on the Hot 100 and make it only the 19th song ever to do so on that chart. Gaga could also potentially wrest a record for the biggest debut track for a woman from Britney Spears if download sales continue to climb. Spears’ “Hold it Against Me” rocked the chart a month ago with 411,000 in sales, but if Gaga’s numbers hold she could land the fourth-largest digital track debut of all time behind Flo Rida’s “Right Round,” (636,000) the Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” (465,000) and Flo Rida’s “Low” (460,000). The star stopped by “Jay Leno” the day after the Grammys, and in addition to explaining that she and Madonna have no beef over complaints by some that “Born This Way” bears too much of a resemblance to some earlier Material Girl hits, Gaga also announced her upcoming May HBO special and explained the inspiration behind her new album. She also revealed that she changed up the entire look of her Grammy performance two days before it aired because she wasn’t happy with it. “I don’t want the band and dancers to feel like a band and dancers,” Gaga said, explaining why her crew was dressed in flesh-tone vinyl outfits that matched her own. When Leno made a crack about her trio of Grammy outfits, which included a molded leather bodice created by fashion icon Thierry Mugler, Gaga said the latter had a cosmic inspiration. “It was inspired by humanoids, alien sex humanoid hybrid women,” she said matter of factly, rocking some of the low budget sci-fi alien face-ridged makeup she debuted at the Grammys, on Leno’s show. The talk show host pointed to her third getup, which she said featured a giant black “church” hat, and asked if maybe it didn’t block the view of the star behind her at the show, actor Will Smith. Gaga promised it didn’t and added that she is in love with his daughter’s hit single. “I love Willow,” gushed Gaga , who took a series of photos with the pre-teen Smith family singer on her lap at the show. “I told her that she inspired me to whip my hair back and forth!” Though she claimed to have written “Born This Way” in a matter of minutes, Gaga said she spent more than a year perfecting it and tweaking the music, promising that it is just one of the many sounds you’ll hear on the album. “The record is kind of eclectic in a way,” she said. “The rest of the songs on the album are quite different from ‘Born This Way.’ ” As for the album’s theme, Gaga said it’s about “being able to know that when you were born, you weren’t just born in that moment, you have your entire life to realize the person that you’re potentially going to become and whoever you choose to be was part of your destiny.” Her hope, she said, was to encourage people who are feeling bullied or disenfranchised at the moment to realize that it’s “never too late to harness your inner superstar.” For more Grammy Awards analysis, interviews, fashion and more, stick with MTV News! ‘American Idol’ Takes Nashville, Finds Potential Winner In Lauren Alaina

Teen wows the judges with her strong voice. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson on “American Idol” Photo: FOX No pressure, Nashville, but the biggest “American Idol” winner in the show’s history, Carrie Underwood, just happens to live in Music City. That was the not-so-subtle message “Idol” producers opened the show with on Thursday night (January 27) when our new favorite judging trio sat behind their desk in the legendary Ryman Auditorium to see what they could find in the home of country music. By the time they got up, they felt like they might have found a winner in a 15-year-old country girl with a voice as big as all outdoors. But things did not get off to a very good start thanks to helium-voiced chicken squawker Christine McCaffrey, a not-quite-there dental assistant from West Palm Beach, Florida, who butchered one of J.Lo’s favorite songs, Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance.” All Randy Jackson could keep saying was, “Really? Really?” In past seasons, we’ve had twins, best friends, brothers and sisters, but Thursday night’s show brought us our first auditioning exes. Aspiring singers and former couple Rob Bolin and Chelsee Oaks made beautiful music together, singing a flawless duet on the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody.” “You were one voice,” a pleasantly surprised Steven Tyler told them. “Sometimes passion comes from friction, and I saw how much in love you were.” Restaurant worker Bolin, 23, showed off his deliciously raspy Ray LaMontagne-style chops on Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” while waitress Oaks, 23, was equally impressive with a rich run through Brandi Carlile’s “The Story.” Both made it through, so Hollywood Week should be interesting. Amid the great ones, there were philosophical, Lynyrd Skynyrd-lovin’, thick-as-a-brick tattoo artists, a screechy Chaka Khan killer, a kid in a blue bodysuit and a soulful former Miss Teen USA named Stormi (yes, with an “I”) who got through over Lopez’s objections about her “small” voice. And then there was 27-year-old Wickliffe, Kentucky, student Adrienne Beasley. Her inspiring story was solid — she was adopted by a white family at age 2 and raised on a farm — but her singing was even better, mixing a hint of R&B grit and country twang on Lady Antebellum’s “American Honey.” “I hear something so special in your voice, and I can’t put my finger on it right now,” said Tyler, who was close to tears after the performance. The real showstopper, though, was self-proclaimed recording artist and already-a-star Latoya “Younique” Moore, a 26-year-old who made up in sass what she lacked in vocal skills. Her tone-deaf slaughter of Tamia’s “When I Close My Eyes” was a disaster, and Tyler was kind when he joked it was “definitely unique.” Randy was more blunt, calling it annoying and making a high-pitched buzzing-bee sound while breaking the bad news. But Moore wasn’t done, as she sang her way out the door, hoping for one last chance, thinking perhaps it was just her tempo that was off and not everything else. A succession of fellas knocked it out later in the day, showing off some ear-licious deep-fried soul and grit that got the judges excited. Matt Dillard’s story was very inspirational, coming from a family that had housed more than 700 special-needs foster children over the past two decades. The brawny, cowboy-hat-wearing 27-year-old unemployed Tennessee good ol’ boy surprised the panel with his low-key cover of Josh Groban’s popera hit “You Raise Me Up.” Lopez wasn’t swayed, but Tyler agreed with Jackson that it was worth taking a chance on Dillard. Talk about saving the best for last! The judges were sure they found a potential winner in Rossville, Georgia, spunky 15-year-old Lauren Alaina, who cited her cancer-survivor cousin as the inspiration for her singing. And when she opened her mouth and poured out Faith Hill’s “Like We Never Loved at All,” the air went out of the room as her smoky voice wrapped around the ballad and hit all the high, low and in-between notes like a seasoned pro. “Best we’ve seen today … I’m blown away,” Randy said. “I think you should cry,” Tyler added as Alaina began to mist up. “Because you’re going to make 40 million people cry tears of joy, baby.” She put some icing on the cake after she brought in her family and instructed Tyler to duet with her on his “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” her parents’ favorite song. It’s on to Austin, Texas, next week and two more nights of auditions. Who was your favorite Nashville auditioner? Let us know in the comments! Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’ Coming To ‘Glee,’ Amber Riley Says

‘Glee’ actress tells MTV News to also expect ‘Somebody to Love.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Amber Riley Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty We already knew Justin Bieber’s music will turn up on an upcoming episode of “Glee,” but we weren’t sure which smash the McKinley High crew would be remaking — until now. “Glee” star Amber Riley confirmed to MTV News on Sunday (January 16) that not just one, but two Bieber jams will be made over by the cast of the hit song-and-dance show, including the Ludacris-assisted chart-topper “Baby,” which was dubbed the most viewed music video on YouTube in 2010 . “There’s gonna be two Bieber songs, and I think ‘Baby’ is one. I think that’s correct,” Riley disclosed on the Golden Globes red carpet. According to Riley, the Gleeks are also set to rock another Bieber-helmed dance-floor filler: “Somebody to Love.” “I think … those are the two songs,” she revealed. “Glee” co-creator Ryan Murphy also recently dished that part of Bieber’s pop&B repertoire would make it into the show. In a very apt use of the pop star’s teen-hysteria-inducing hits, Murphy said the Biebs’ music would be the backdrop for a scene in which one of the fellas tries to win over one of the “Glee” ladies. “Bieber comes up in episode 13 as a small plot point. Sam [Chord Overstreet] sings a J.B. song to win Quinn’s [Dianna Agron] approval,” Murphy said recently. In addition to Bieber, Lady Gaga is slated to get the “Glee” treatment once again, this time for a track that hasn’t even dropped. Murphy said Mother Monster’s forthcoming “Born This Way” single will serve as the inspiration for an episode about school bully Karofsky (played by Max Adler), who the show has hinted is gay. “I love that that song is [an] anthem,” Murphy said. “This show is by nature optimistic, and I think a character like Karofsky could turn to booze or pills or alcohol and kill themselves or do something dark. But I also love Max and I love that character and I sorta want that character to have a happy ending. “So I don’t really know what that’s going to be,” he continued. “But I do know we’re going to do a whole episode that’s about that song.” Are you looking forward to hearing the “Glee” cast perform Justin Bieber’s music?
