Natalie Portman recently spoke about what she perceived to be double-standards in the entertainment industry. After she cited one early 2000s star as an example, Jessica Simpson accused Natalie of slut-shaming her . Now, Natalie is clarifying her words — and apologizing. After seeing Jessica Simpson’s response, Natalie Portman replied on Instagram. “Thank you for your words,” Natalie begins. That is a very good way to start. Natalie continues: “I completely agree with you.” Both women agree “that a woman should be allowed to dress however she likes and behave however she likes and not be judged.” Natalie explains that she should have been more clear about her meaning. “I only meant to say I was confused,” Natalie writes. She says this “as a girl coming of age in the public eye around the same time.” The late ’90s and early 2000s were a pretty distinct era. Natalie explains that she was confused “by the media’s mixed messages about how girls and women were supposed to behave.” Then she makes an explicit apology. “I’m sorry for any hurt my words may have caused,” Natalie writes. Even if your words were misconstrued, it’s good to apologize anyway. “I have nothing but respect for your talent and your voice,” she affirms. Natalie writes that Jessica Simpson’s voice is one “that you use to encourage and empower women all over the globe.” That’s true. So, here’s the line that got Natalie into hot water int he first place. “I remember being a teenager,” she said. “And there was Jessica Simpson on the cover of a magazine.” She noted that Jessica was “saying ‘I’m a virgin’ while wearing a bikini.” “And,” Natalie expressed. “I was confused.” “Like, I don’t know what this is trying to tell me as a woman, as a girl,” Natalie explained. Wearing a bikini doesn’t mean that one is having sex, but it definitely is using sex appeal. Jessica Simpson posted a lengthy reply to Natalie’s words. “The industry we work in often tries to define us and box us in,” Jessica noted. “However, I was taught to be myself and honor the different ways all women express themselves,” she continued. “Which is why I believed then — and I believe now — that being sexy in a bikini and being proud of my body are not synonymous with having sex,” she wrote. Jessica continued: “I have made it my practice to not shame other women for their choices.” That is a very good practice. So, who’s the bad guy here? No one — except perhaps for the elements within the entertainment industry that try to steamroll over women, their images, and their words. That era was a memorable one. Very sexual images of skantily clad young women were allowed — but overtly sexual statements were frowned upon. Britney Spears danced with her midriff exposed, but her song lyrics were extremely PG. “Email My Heart” is not a euphemism for sex. As Natalie was pointing out, beautiful women were expected to express ideas such as chastity and virginity even while marketing themselves through sex appeal. It’s a definite mixed message, one that uses women to please male audiences while making demands on the behavior of young women at the same time. As Jessica points out, this was often not by choice. Natalie never intended to call out or shame Jessica, just to cite her as an example. Hopefully, things are much clearer now. At the reunion special for The Real Housewives of Orange County , Tamra Judge claimed to have caught Shannon Beador in a lie . Tamra claimed that Shannon had been seeing a boyfriend while filming the season, but kept him secret so she could “play the victim card.” She lays out her claims in the shocking video that we have attached. At the reunion, Tamra Judge lobbed a bombshell accusation at Shannon. The former friends feuded on camera as Tamra claimed that Shannon had kept her secret boyfriend hidden. She accused Shannon of hypocrisy, saying that she'd acted distraught over David dating so soon after their divorce but that she was, too. In Tamra's eyes, it looked like Shannon was trying to milk people were sympathy during her tumultuous divorce. Also, as Gina pointed out, it looked like Shannon was hiding part of her personal life from the viewers and from Bravo. Is this really the case? Did Shannon have a secret boyfriend? They can't be talking about Scot Matteson. Scot, whom Shannon began dating this summer, was still spotted everywhere with Shannon as recently as October. There are photos of him with Shannon and with Andy Cohen, possibly as the filming of the reunion special. Scot is a real estate developer and is known for being a family man. At no point did it appear that Shannon was keeping him secret, with other Housewives speaking about him publicly over the summer. So we'll have to look a bit further back than this. What about Alex? Shannon went on some dates with him during the Spring of 2018. The two attended music events but, ultimately, things did not work out. Some speculated that, since Scot may have been in the audience for Tamra's accusations, that Shannon's secret ex was Alex. While it's possible that Tamra was referring to him, Shannon didn't really keep him secret. She made it clear that she was keeping him off of the show, but she did share photos of the two of them together on Instagram. It looks like Shannon's mystery man was probably not someone whom she's shown on social media. This is a guy whom she characterizes as having “treated her like crap,” even though she had fancied him at the time. (It sounds like poor Shannon has a type ) Shannon objected to Tamra's characterization of this dude as a “boyfriend.” As some women learn to their chagrin, going on a couple of dates with a guy is not the same thing as being boyfriend and girlfriend. Shannon's relationship, such as it was, fizzled out before it went anywhere. Tamra was being kind of ridiculous. The whole reason that this came up was because of the discussion of David Beador's new girlfriend, Lesley Cook. Lesley is reportedly pregnant (and David and Lesley may be engaged ), which obviously came up at the reunion. Shannon being upset at David finding a new love by New Years isn't somehow hypocritical if she went on some dates earlier in the year. There are different tiers of dating. Putting a baby in someone on purpose and taking international vacations, which David has been doing, is not the same as going to a concert. Tamra should know that. Gina Kirschenheiter, a newcomer to the franchise and a fan favorite, felt that Shannon was probably obligated to share her life with the show. That's true for some things — as Real Housewife of Atlanta Kenya Moore learned last year when she had a secret wedding. But, as Vicki was quick to point out to Gina, you don't have to share everything from your life. A few dates with a guy is not the same as having a boyfriend, it's not something that you have to put on camera. Gina may have felt like she wasted her time with a matchmaker, and her feelings are valid, but Shannon wasn't trying to trick her. It's said that Shannon and Tamra will make nice in the next installment of the reunion. But we already know that this peace doesn't last.
They often say that Internet trolls weigh, like, 400 pounds and live in their mother’s basement. But Kourtney Kardashian is here to disprove that theory. She’s here to say that trolls can also be hot and sexy and seductive and sizzling and… wait, sorry. We lost our train of thought. Oh, right. Here we go again: Kourtney has posted a new photo to her Instagram page, very clearly trolling either Internet users in general or one Internet user in particular: Sofia Richie. The picture (above) features Kourtney in a fancy and revealing black dress. Her cleavage and her bare legs are very much on display… she’s lying on a bed… ex-boyfriend Scott Disick and six-year old daughter Penelope are in the background… and Kardashian has written one word as the caption: Coparenting . This is a fact, of course. We’ve often given Kourtney and Scott props for always placing their three kids above all else. It’s clear that no matter what turmoil has existed personally between Kardashian and Disick, they have always been sure not to let it affect their relationship with their children. But most folks seem to agree that something else is going on here, aside from Kourtney simply stating that she and Scott are watching their toddler together. To wit: “Not coparenting. Just manipulating the situation to upset the girlfriend. Not the maturity of an almost 40-year-old. Grow up,” wrote one person in the comments section alongside this photo. Another called out Kardashian for being “disrespectful” to Sofia Richie, who has been dating Disick for well over a year now. And then a third accused Kourtney of trying to make Richie feel “insecure.” It’s been rumored forever, of course, that Disick is still sleeping with Kardashian . Just about a month ago, Scott, Sofia and Kourtney all had dinner together , hoping to quell this kind of chatter or at least talk about an awkward situation in which Richie would be spending a lot of time with Kourtney’s son and daughters. The meal hasn’t really slowed down the rumor mill, however. After Kourtney posed nude for GQ Mexico recently, for example, many assumed she was sending some sort of message to Disick. I’ve still got it if you ever want it , you know? And then Richie must not have been comforted by reading about how much Disick appreciated seeing his ex-lover’s birthday suit again. This remains a very tenuous arrangement all around. It’s certainly possible that Kourtney didn’t mean much by posting the photograph here of her and Disick in bed — but does anyone really believe that? How much Richie have felt upon seeing it? No matter how much she may love Scott and no matter how much she may even think Scott loves her, the fact remains that he has multiple children with Kourtney and always will. She will never be able to compete with the bond this creates between parents. And Kourtney just went out her way to send Sofia a reminder. Emilie is very well known in the New York City dance community, specifically when it comes to the lite feet movement. The Copenhagen, Denmark native has danced for everyone from ASAP Ferg to Chris Brown — and with her large social media following plus half of uptown New York supporting her, it’s safe to say that Em is up next. Don’t get us wrong, anyone with raw talent (who can Harlem shake better than some Harlemites) deserves all the clout and respect that Emilie receives. But as a White girl whose upbringing was the polar opposite of someone growing up in the projects of Brooklyn, some things just aren’t acceptable. Like her birthday video to Jay-Z in front of Marcy houses. Not only is the video tone deaf AF, but it poses the question: Are Black folks too welcoming? Are we giving away our culture for free? There are several things about the 16 second clip that would trigger any person of color that grew up in an impoverished community: The setting: Public Housing is not a tourist attraction or a prop. Oppressed people of color were placed STILL live there and some are trying to make it out. Starret City, the largest federally subsidized, was built specifically for low-income, government assisted Black folks in 1974. Now it’s called Spring Creek Towers and was sold to shareholders, including Donald Trump, for $905 million . The Timbs: We’re use to Wypipo jocking our style and calling it their own; i.e. the Kim Kardashian “Boxer Braids”. But we gotta draw the line some where, and Timberland Boots is a good place to start. In the late 80’s and early 90’s before White folks ever thought about making their way to Brooklyn, Timbs were a symbol of the urban NY culture. Legend has it that Drug Dealers made them popular in the 90’s when they wore them to hit the block. But just like most things in Black culture — white folks got a hold of them, then celebrities. Now we cringe every time we see an “Emilie” ditching her uggs for Timbs. The props: If a Black girl came to a predominately White, suburban neighborhood dancing in front of the property with her coat and backpack posted on the gate all willy nilly — the police would have been called before she could finish her harlem shake. The Tags: Really though, Emilie? You just gon’ tag every popular urban outlet thinking they’d praise you for finagaling in front of such a beloved area? Nah. The Dance: As Millennials, we let a lot of things slide when it comes to the arts. “If you’re good at something, why do we have to bring race into the mix?” But just as White folks benefit from their ancestors atrocities with White privilege, Black people bare the brunt of our ancestors pain and suffering with oppression and maltreatment. And just as Jamie Lee Lewis wrote on Instagram , “The Harlem Shake, Light Feet are not dance moves. For us this is culture, it’s how we survive and how we acknowlege that we survived.” By no means are we saying that Emilie Brooklyn can’t dance, cause shorty has moves! But just be more aware. Be more informed. And please, get more Black friends.
