Elsewhere In The World: Child Brides As Young As Five Forced Into Matrimony-dom With Old Geezers [Video]

That child bride side-eye is priceless. This child matrimony-dom is especially crazy because just having sex with their husbands has killed some of these brides, who still weren’t mature enough to handle the size of a grown man. Via RadarOnline : The bride wore pink, a tiny tee-shirt with a butterfly on it that was suitable for the five-year-old girl, but sadly her impending marriage was a world away from being age-appropriate. Rajani is one of the countless under age victims of the illegal child bride industry that is uncovered in a new ground-breaking investigation, Too Young To Wed , that was launched on Thursday to coincide with the International Day of the Girl Child, RadarOnline.com learned in an e-mail statement from United Nations Population Fund (UNPF). The startling revelations shed light on the millions of women around the world who are forced to wed before they are even teenagers, such as Tehani, a six-year-old from Yemen who became a wife before she even knew how babies were made. Or Meigon, 11, from Afghanistan, who revealed, “In my whole life, I have never felt love.” The remote Indian village of Rajasthan is spotlighted in the shocking study and the focus of a National Geographic article that reveals how the illicit ceremonies are conducted late at night, with the drunken grooms arriving by car instead of the customary elephant or the lavishly saddled horses Joining Rajani on her wedding night were her aunts, Radha and Gora, 15 and 13, who unlike her were old enough to understand their fate. The only person to have met the future husbands was their father – and Rajani’s grandfather – a farmer named Mr. M, who clandestinely hid the ceremony from the watchful eye of the police, as in India girls may not legally marry before age 18. “Child marriage spans continents, language, religion, caste. In India the girls will typically be attached to boys four or five years older; in Yemen, Afghanistan, and other countries with high early marriage rates, the husbands may be young men or middle-aged widowers or abductors who rape first and claim their victims as wives afterward, as is the practice in certain regions of Ethiopia,” reveals National Geographic writer, Cynthia Gorney, who has traveled around the world with photographer Stephanie Sinclair capturing heartbreaking tales and images. One tells of Ghulam, the 11-year-old bride from Afghanistan who was married off in 2005, forced to drop out of school, giving up on her dream of becoming a teacher one day. Parents often remove their daughters from school even before they are engaged to limit their interactions with boys. Some marriages are business transactions – such as a debt cleared in exchange for an 8-year-old bride or the resolution of a family feud by handing over a 12-year-old virgin – while others aim to unite families and combat overwhelming poverty. A man named Mohammed in remote western Yemen told of a girl in his village named Ayesha. “She is 10 years old,” he said. “Very tiny. The man she married is 50 years old, with a big belly, like so. “Like a rat getting married to an elephant.” Mohammed described the arrangement called shighar, in which two men provide each other with new brides by exchanging female relatives. “These men married each other’s daughters,” he explained. “If the ages had been proper between the husbands and new wives, I don’t think anyone would have reported it. But girls should not marry when they are 9 or 10. Maybe 15 or 16.” Near the end of her trip to Yemen, Gorney received a dispatch that highlighted the horror of the illegal matrimonies. “Newspapers were reporting that a bride from a village had been dropped off at a Sanaa hospital four days after her wedding,” she wrote. “Sex appeared to have ruptured the girl’s internal organs, hospital officials said. She had bled to death. She was 13 years old.” It is estimated that about 51 million girls below age 18 are currently married, often under the cover of darkness and in secret. In Afghanistan alone, it is believed that approximately 57 percent of girls wed before the legal age of 16. In many cases, the girls are lorded over by their husbands and in-laws, leaving them vulnerable to domestic violence as well as physical, sexual and verbal abuse. Underage wives who are lucky enough to escape from their husbands end up living in poverty, or worse. Some girls turn to “the world’s oldest profession” to earn a meager income and enter brothels, where they are subjected to horrific abuse. It is estimated that over the next decade, 100 million more girls — or roughly 25,000 girls a day — will marry before they turn 18 if this issue is not urgently addressed. Thank God someone is bringing attention to this issue. SMH @ these practices. No girl that young should be forced to wed and have children, especially not with no big azz grown azz man! High and Low: Thoughts Turn To Fall − And Death! Oslo August 31st And Halloween II Make Mortality Fun

As thoughts turn to autumn and the coming of winter,  this week’s new DVD releases range from a highbrow Norwegian film about a man considering his own mortality to a guilty-pleasure sequel about sexy American teens eluding a masked madman. Yes, it’s that kind of week. HIGH: Oslo August 31 st (Strand Releasing; $27.99 DVD) Who’s Responsible: Directed by Joachim Trier, who co-wrote the script with Eskil Vogt (“freely” based upon Pierre Drieu La Rochelle’s novel Le feu follet ); starring Anders Danielsen Lie, Hans Olav Brenner. What It’s All About: Former party animal Anders (Danielsen Lie) is now 34, two weeks away from finishing rehab for drug and alcohol addiction, and at an utter loss in trying to figure out what to do with the rest of his life. Following a failed suicide attempt, he gets a day pass to travel to Oslo for a job interview, but things don’t go well. His family won’t see him, his ex won’t return his calls, the job interview goes south when Anders says that “drug dealer” is what’s missing from his résumé, and his old friends have grown up without him. (They now seem miserable because they have children, or miserable because they don’t.) Why It’s Schmancy: Trier (director of the international hit Reprise , which also starred Andersen Lie) begins the film with contemporary and vintage footage of the Norwegian capital, as a various voices narrate their memories of growing up and living there. One of these unidentified inhabitants remembers a friend who “thought ‘melancholy’ was cooler than ‘nostalgia’” and that’s almost a shorthand of the heartbreaking storytelling that Trier gives us. He’s aided greatly by a powerful performance by Danielsen Lie (in real life, he’s a doctor who occasionally acts in his friend’s films), who never wallows in self-pity. Most American movies about drugs end with rehab as the great panacea, but here’s a story about someone who’s been through therapy and still sees nothing waiting for him on the other side. (Fun fact: The novel on which Oslo August 31 st is loosely based was also adapted by Louis Malle in 1963’s The Fire Within .) Why You Should Buy It: This DVD release is admittedly light on extras — just a trailer, in fact — but given that this Cannes Film Festival official selection got a mere fraction of Reprise ’s U.S. release, it’s quite likely that fans of up-and-coming director Trier don’t even know that this movie exists. LOW: Halloween II (Shout Factory; $24.97 DVD/$29.93 Blu-Ray) Who’s Responsible: Written by John Carpenter and Debra Hill, directed by Rick Rosenthal; starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Pleasance, Lance Guest, Leo Rossi What It’s All About: Picking up right where the classic Halloween (1978) left off, a traumatized Laurie (Curtis) is taken to Haddonfield Memorial Hospital to recover from the horrifying events of October 31. But Michael Myers isn’t done with her yet. Impassive mask in place, he skulks his way through the shocking dark and empty corridors of the place — and this is pre-Obamacare! — until he can find his prey. Will Dr. Loomis (Pleasance) arrive in time? And what shocking secrets of Michael’s past will be uncovered in this sequel? Why It’s Fun: Is Halloween II the game-changing slasher epic that the John Carpenter original is? Of course not. Does it still deliver some scary fun while staying true to the franchise? Absolutely. Horror fans are justifiably leery of sequels, particularly those not directed by the original filmmaker, but Halloween II keeps the jolts coming and allows the tireless Curtis one more opportunity to scream for her life. (The film marks the end of her career’s first chapter. Curtis’ acclaimed turns in Love Letters and Trading Places two years later allowed her to expand her repertoire beyond young-ladies-in-danger.) If nothing else, this one’s a damn sight better than the wretched Rob Zombie movie of the same title from a few years ago. Why You Should Buy It (Again): This Collector’s Edition from Shout Factory’s new Scream Factory label is a full bag of candy with two commentary tracks, the TV cut with additional footage, interviews, a doc about the movie’s screening locations, deleted scenes, an alternate ending, and lots more. (Both the DVD and the Blu-Ray come fully loaded.) And hey, if you’re one of the first 500 or so people to order from ShoutFactory.com, they’ll throw in a limited-edition Haddonfield Memorial nurse’s cap. Film Society Of Lincoln Center Fills Richard Peña Post With 2 Appointments

Ending nearly a year of speculation, the Film Society of Lincoln Center announced two replacements for long-serving Program Director Richard Peña, who is set to step down at the end of 2012 after serving 25 years in the post. Kent Jones will be the new Director of Programming for the annual New York Film Festival , while Robert Koehler will serve as Director of Programming, Year Round. The Film Society of Lincoln Center said that appointing two directors to the programming team will allow the organization, which not only produces the annual NYFF but a host of other programs throughout the year, to “better serve the needs of an organization that has recently expanded its operations with the opening of the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film.” Jones began in programming with Bruce Goldstein at Film Forum, and served as the American representative for the International Film Festival Rotterdam from 1996 to 1998. He was an assumed heir to Peña, serving as Associate Director of Programming at The Film Society of Lincoln Center, and from 2002 to 2009, including the New York Film Festival selection committee from 1998 to 2009 after departing under the organization’s previous Executive Director, Mara Manus. He has also served on juries at film festivals around the world, including Rotterdam, Buenos Aires, San Francisco, Venice and Cannes. In 2009, he was named Executive Director of The World Cinema Foundation. Koehler is a film critic and festival programmer and has served as an instructor and programmer for UCLA Extension’s Sneak Preview program from 2003 to 2007. In 2003, he developed the innovative film program, “The Films That Got Away,” an ongoing series presenting significant recent work that has previously not screened in Los Angeles. Institutions with which the series has collaborated include UCLA Film Archive, the American Cinematheque and the Los Angeles Film Festival. In 2009, he was appointed director of programming at AFI Fest Los Angeles, where he helped create a new and focused competition section titled “New Lights,” as part of AFI Fest’s programming concept as a festival-of-festivals. “Richard Peña has played a fundamental role in defining our organization and its commitment to discovering and supporting the best and most important cinema in the world,” FSLC Executive Director Rose Kuo said. “Kent Jones and Bob Koehler, whose thinking and writing about cinema I deeply respect, are the perfect team to build upon Richard’s vision and carry it forward.” “The New York Film Festival has always been a beacon to me – when I was young and pouring over the yearly schedule in the Sunday Times, when I moved to New York in my 20s and started to actually attend the festival, and later when I served on the selection committee” said Kent Jones in a statement. “It means a lot to me to be entrusted with its stewardship after Richard Peña, to whom I owe a lot – I’m far from alone on that count. I’m excited to be working with Rose Kuo, with Bob Koehler, with Scott Foundas, with Gavin Smith, with Marian Masone, and with the whole team at the Film Society, many of whom are old friends and work colleagues. We’ll be working together to keep our part of cinema culture alive and thriving.” Added Robert Koehler, “I’m delighted and honored to join the country’s finest cinema presentation organization. Especially at a time when it is embarking on a new, exciting and innovative chapter in its history.” Richard Peña will continue his involvement with the Film Society of Lincoln Center after departing his duties as Programming Director at the end of the year, helping to design and organize a new educational initiative. The 50th edition of the New York Film Festival will take place September 28 – October 14.

Kim Kardashian: Yes, I’m a Perfect Bitch!

Kim Kardashian is many things: an attention-hogging reality star. A sex tape maven . A total waste of large breasts and oxygen. But Kanye West has found a new way to describe his girlfriend to the world: as the Perfect Bitch . In a Tweet (that has since been deleted for some reason), the rapper said this week that he wrote that track about Kardashian, a tidbit Kim is now wearing as a badge of honor. “I’m honored,” Kardashian has supposedly said in response to the song, with a friend telling TMZ Kim loves it because she “knows he doesn’t mean it in a negative way when he says the word ‘bitch.'” Kardashian adds that the song is flattering because it talks “about how he was with so many other girls but could never find the right one until he met me.” And now? Kanye may put a ring on his bitch , if Kim will let him, that is.

Bret Easton Ellis Calls Openly Gay Matt Bomer "Ludicrous" Pick For Fifty Shades of Grey

Bret Easton Ellis may be no longer under consideration to write the Fifty Shades of Grey screenplay, but he’s still making his opinions about it known. Namely, he says it would be “ludicrous” to cast a gay actor – specifically Matt Bomer – as Christian Grey in the film because of his sexuality. The openly gay Bomer ( White Collar, Magic Mike ) is considered by some people to be a perfect Christian based on his looks and acting ability. It’s to say Ellis, 48, who raised eyebrows last year by calling Glee a puddle of HIV , is not one of those people angling for Matt to be cast. Ellis insists he is not discriminating on grounds of sexual orientation, but unabashedly believes Bomer is a bad choice. He wrote on Twitter. “Okay. Let’s finalise this … Matt Bomer is totally hot and a very good actor. He is NOT right for Christian Grey and it complicates the role.” “I don’t care how good an actor you are but being married to another man complicates things for playing CG.” “This is NOT about discrimination. It’s about an intensely straight actor wanting absolutely to screw Ana Steele.” “Fifty Shades of Grey: the most popular book on the planet having Matt Bomer – a gay actor – play Christian Grey is absolutely ludicrous. Why?” “Okay I’ll say it. Matt Bomer isn’t right for Christian Grey because he is openly gay. He’s great for other roles but this is too big a game.” “And I think if Matt Bomer wants the role which I doubt the international press tour will be an embarrassing fiasco. He’s not CG. Never.” “I am NOT discriminating Matt Bomer because of his sexuality. Fifty Shades of Grey demands an actor that is genuinely into women. Get it?!?” “I actually think it’s cool that women want Matt Bomer as Christian Grey. It means that we’ve moved beyond stereotypes and that gay is hot.” “I think Matt Bomer is incredibly handsome and a good actor but I think he comes off totally gay in White Collar. And that is why no to CG.” NOTE: The role has not been cast, but Bomer (like the Vampire Diaries ‘ Ian Somerhalder) is frequently discussed as a possible casting choice. It’s unclear if enough readers even know who he is, or care that he’s gay, to influence their perception of his character and on-screen chemistry. As a professional actor he could probably sell it, but opinions will likely vary on how well. As for why Ellis is ranting about it … who knows. What do you think of Ellis’ comments? And do you think Bomer would make a good CG? Sound off in the comments – and in the poll – below: Matt Bomer as Christian Grey?

On the 17th of July I got up at 4am and got mum to drop me in…

On the 17th of July I got up at 4am and got mum to drop me in the city. I had no clue where I was going but Kyle and Jackie O said that Justin would be on at 8am, so I set off to World Square where the studio is. I got there and then found out that it was all pre-recorded. I was quite upset but I soon found out the hotel he was rumoured to be at. I got to the hotel and there was no sign of him, just about 20 fans. I waited and waited until Scrappy and Dan came out, said hey and then got into the car. I stayed at that hotel for 10 hours and there was not one sign of the Biebs but we knew he was in there. I left that night and then went to a hotel in the city where my auntie was staying so I could be up early for his Sunrise performance (which I won tickets to). I woke up at 3am on the 18th of July and walked to the International Passager Terminal and waited in line until getting into the show . Everyone was all hyped up and at about 8am Justin came out. He sang acoustic to us and it was the most amazing performance ever! After this I got in a taxi and went to Justin’s hotel. No one was really sure but a lot of police came and they had barriers put up and all, the security was growing and so were the amount of people. At the start there were about 50 and then more and more started to come. We were all standing there waiting and at 12:03  Justin walked out of his hotel, we all tried not to scream but with about 300 people there it was hard. He started on one side and started coming closer and closer to me.  People were pushing but that didn’t stop Justin. He walked to me and I held onto his hand and he grabbed mine back. Because of the crowd, we couldnt take a photo but he looked at me and said hi! This was the most amazing experience. Although I didn’t get a photo of us together, I found one of Justin and I holding hands and in the end, I still met Justin Bieber and I will never forget that day! Killing Them Softly Trailer: Playing with Violence & High Stakes Robbery

The film played to a mixture of reactions when it debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and this latest film by Andrew Dominik, starring Brad Pitt, Scoot McNairy, Ben Mendelsohn, James Gandolfini and Ray Liotta packs a wallop of gun shots, fights and explosions. Harvey Weinstein recently suggested a violence summit might be in order to take place among Hollywood types in the wake of the tragedy in Aurora, CO. If so, this Weinstein Company release may be a good example of what he’s talking about. But in Cannes, both Dominik and Pitt took exception to suggestions the film had “too much violence.” “I don’t understand the obsession with violence,” Dominik said. “It’s like people who don’t want to show children fairy tales. But fairy tales dramatize children’s concerns and emotions.” Added Pitt: “Violence is an accepted part of the gangster world. It’s an accepted possibility when dealing in crime. I’d have a much harder problem playing a racist for instance than, say, shooting someone right in the face.” Pitt’s character in Killing Them Softly is centered on self-interest. He doesn’t particularly crave violence, but uses it as a means to an end. He’s not bloodthirsty nor does he particularly find murder palatable, but he’s willing to do it as painlessly as possible in order to get ahead. “It’s a metaphor for business — it’s cutthroat but has to be done,” he said. The trailer opens with a robbery pulled off during a mob-packed back room card game. The trailer continues with intermittent moments of Pitt’s character, Jackie Cogan, meandering sveltely through hails of bullets and high-stakes banter. Watch the trailer on YouTube .

Celeste and Jesse Forever Brings Out the Star-Wattage at NYC Premiere

Celeste and Jesse Forever star Rashida Jones and director Lee Toland Krieger at the after-party for their film Wednesday night in NYC. Photo by Amanda Schwab/Starpix . Indie pic Celeste and Jesse Forever played Sundance back in January and achieved that much sought-after hallmark of success: an acquisition deal with a big-name distributor – in this case the venerable Sony Pictures Classics. But the movie that had some false starts before shooting began did make it to the screen and if a gala screening of the film last night in New York is any measure, it should see more success. In addition to cast members Rashida Jones (who also co-wrote the film) and Rebecca Dayan as well as writer Will McCormack and director Lee Toland Krieger, Anne Hathaway , Paul Rudd , David Schwimmer , Amy Poehler , Aziz Ansari , Andy Cohen and Max Greenfield turned out for the event, hosted by The Peggy Siegal Company and the International Rescue Committee. A second-floor bar with a view of the Williamsburg Bridge at the Hotel Chantelle in Manhattan’s Lower East Side played hotspot for the after-party where Hathaway and others mingled with cast and invitees. Krieger told Movieline that producer Jennifer Todd approached him with the Celeste and Jesse Forever script back in 2010. “I thought I’d just read it, but then I fell in love with it,” he said. “I am a big Woody Allen fan and especially love Husbands and Wives . Both movies are full of comedy, but they’re about heartbreak.” Earlier at the screening, Sony Classics co-president Michael Barker praised Krieger and the cast. “We came to realize they’re major talents,” said Barker. “We think with this movie, you’re in the hands of a major American independent filmmaker.” Also in the crowd were Brady Corbet ( Simon Killer ), Olivia Culpo (Miss USA), Nadia Dajani ( Delocated ), Abby Elliott ( SNL ), Alex Karpovsky ( Girls ), Matthew Settle ( Gossip Girl ), Joey Slotnick ( Too Big to Fail ), Tennessee Thomas, ( Scott Pilgrim vs the World ), Mike Nichols & Diane Sawyer. Sony Classics will open Celeste and Jesse Forever in New York and Los Angeles beginning this Friday; stay tuned for our Movieline chat with Rashida Jones. Plot: Celeste (Rashida Jones) and Jesse (Andy Samberg) met in high school, married young and are growing apart. Now thirty, Celeste is the driven owner of her own media consulting firm, Jesse is once again unemployed and in no particular rush to do anything with his life. Celeste is convinced that divorcing Jesse is the right thing to do, and if they do it now instead of later, they can remain supportive friends. While navigating the turbulent changes in their lives and in their hearts, these two learn that in order to truly love someone, you may have to let them go. View the trailer on YouTube .
