Parents of Celts fan settle with Boston (AP)

The parents of a Celtics fan who stopped breathing and later died after Boston police took him into custody during 2008 NBA championship celebrations have settled with the city for $3 million. The settlement announced Thursday by a lawyer for the parents of David Woodman came on the same day the Celtics were scheduled to play the Los Angeles Lakers in the deciding Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals.

World Cup 2010: Yaya Touré’s agent says move to Manchester City likely

• Barcelona midfielder likely to join brother Kolo at Eastlands • ‘I think we will probably close his departure very soon’ Manchester City’s long pursuit of Yaya Touré is nearing a successful conclusion and the basis of a deal with Barcelona has been agreed for after the World Cup. A fee has been decided, understood to value him in the region of £25m, and if the structure of payments can be decided City appear to have beaten off Chelsea to convince the 27-year-old that joining a club not involved in the Champions League may still be of benefit to his career. Touré has been on City’s radar since Mark Hughes was manager but, until the past few weeks, he has always expressed reservations about leaving Barcelona for a club outside the Champions League. He is now understood to be inclined to join his brother, Kolo, and become City’s second major summer signing following the £10.5m arrival of Jerome Boateng, the Germany defender, from Hamburg. “I think we will probably close his departure very soon,” Touré’s agent, Dimitri Seluk, said today. “It is likely to be this week, but at the moment we can’t announce anything.” The matter is complicated by the fact that Barcelona have a new president, Sandro Rosell. “I haven’t spoken to Rosell but, out of respect, of course I will speak to him before anything is closed,” Seluk said. “[Joan] Laporta is the president until 30

Veteran Gavin Thomas back for Wales against New Zealand

• Dragons flanker to face All Blacks in first Test • Alun Wyn Jones and Andrew Bishop also start at Carisbrook Gavin Thomas, the 32-year-old who last played Test rugby in 2007, was today named by Wales in the starting XV for the international against the All Blacks on Saturday. The open-side flanker gets his chance in the first of two Tests in New Zealand because Martyn Williams was allowed to miss the tour and because his replacement, Sam Warburton, broke his jaw playing against the Springboks. The other change in the pack is the return of the lock Alun Wyn Jones, while Andrew Bishop replaces the centre James Hook, who is about to have surgery on his damaged shoulder. For those who thought Thomas’s return underlined the Welsh problem of lack of cover in some positions, the coach, Warren Gatland, was adamant: “Gavin Thomas is an experienced flanker who knows all about what it takes to perform at international level. He and Alun Wyn Jones have both impressed in training and deserve their chance this weekend.” The coach might also have mentioned that Thomas has been impressive for Newport Gwent Dragons this season after having his contract with Scarlets terminated. Thomas has also battled back from an achilles injury to produce some of his best rugby this season. Thomas, who made his international debut in 2001 and last played for Wales on the 2007 tour of Australia, admitted he had thought about retiring but after the Dragons lifeline was looking forward to his 23 Test “more than I have any others. I didn’t think it would happen, but it’s here and I need to do something about it”. “This is a performance I need to get right,” said Thomas after hearing that he would be going head-to-head with the All Black captain and inspiration, Richie McCaw. With Gethin Jenkins, Shane Williams, Andy Powell, Duncan Jones, and Luke Charteris also absent along with Martyn Williams and Hook the side had a predictable look to it. The Scarlets scrum-half Tavis Knoyle is likely to make his international debut at some stage and is joined by the Ospreys fly-half Dan Biggar and fellow Scarlet Jonathan Davies in providing cover for the backline. “We are playing one of the best sides in the world at the moment on [their] home soil and they don’t come much bigger than this,” said Gatland. “But we are determined and there is a quiet self-belief creeping through the squad at the moment which makes me feel we are capable of producing a performance to be proud of against the All Blacks.” Given that the All Blacks trounced Ireland 66-28 last weekend, that might have sounded unrealistic if only because Wales have not beaten New Zealand in 57 years. However Gatland is relying on a core of experienced players such as Mike Phillips, Stephen Jones, Jamie Roberts, Adam Jones and Ryan Jones to provide an upset at Carisbrook. As from next year’s World Cup, Test rugby at Dunedin will be played indoors at the Forsyth Barr Stadium, and the All Blacks will not be upset to be moving after 102 years. In 2008 they lost 30-28 to South Africa and last year were beaten 27-22 by France. Wales: Byrne (Ospreys); Halfpenny (Cardiff Blues), Bishop (Ospreys), Roberts (Cardiff Blues), Prydie (Ospreys); S Jones (Scarlets), Phillips (Ospreys); James (Ospreys), Rees (Scarlets), A Jones (Ospreys), B Davies (Cardiff Blues), A W Jones (Ospreys), J Thomas (Ospreys), G Thomas (Newport Gwent Dragons), R Jones (Ospreys, capt). Replacements: Bennett (Ospreys), Yapp (Cardiff Blues), D

Legal ruling delays 14-year-old’s attempt to sail solo round the world

Dutch court extends supervision order for Laura Dekker, who is a ward of the state, amid concerns for her safety A Dutch court has extended a supervision order on a 14-year-old girl, further delaying her quest to become the latest and youngest teenager to sail solo around the world. Laura Dekker was made a ward of the state last year amid concerns that her plan to set sail aboard her small yacht would endanger her physical and social welfare. She was 13 at the time. The decision comes after 16-year-old Abby Sunderland had to be rescued in the Indian Ocean after a similar attempt last week, prompting widespread criticism of her parents for allowing her to undertake such a dangerous journey alone. Sunderland’s voyage ended when waves snapped her mast, prompting a 20-hour international rescue operation. In Holland, Dekker has taken on an intense period of training to try to convince the authorities she is capable of completing the journey, her lawyer Peter de Lange told the court. She has passed a first aid diploma, become accustomed to lack of sleep and arranged to do schoolwork online. But the court in the southern Dutch city of Middelburg ruled that she should remain under state supervision for at least another month. Social workers had asked for a two-month extension of the order. Under the conditions of the ruling, Dekker has been allowed to live at home but her parents have had to consult child protection authorities about all major decisions. Dekker lives with her father, who is encouraging her record-breaking plans, while her mother has objected. The couple are separated. Last December, out of apparent frustration at the court order, Dekker fled alone to the Dutch Caribbean island of St Maarten. When she returned two days later, she was interviewed by the police. The unofficial record for the youngest round-the-world sailor belongs to 16-year-old Australian Jessica Watson , who completed her voyage last month. Japan offers bribes, prostitutes, to resume whaling

The Sunday Times of Great Britain reports Japan is using bribes in the form of economic aid, cash, and even prostitutes to influence small countries to vote in favor of lifting a ban on commercial whaling that has been in place for the last 28 years. The Times reports it has film of officials from various governments admitting that Japan offered financial aid in exchange for a pro-whaling vote on the International Whaling Commission. The Japanese government is trying to repeal a moratorium on commercial whaling imposed by the International Whaling Commission (IWC). The IWC meets this month in Morocco to decide the fate of the moratorium. http://www.examiner.com/x-10853-Portland-Humanist-Examiner~y2010m6d13-Japan-offe… added by: unimatrix0

Turning The Crisis Corner

In a metaphorical walk around debt crisis block, Greece’s prime minister has said that he believes his country is “turning the corner” as recovery efforts by the ransacked country may have started to pay off. Greece avoided defaulting on their debt last month after they were awarded a $131 billion rescue package from eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund. —JCL Al-Jazeera English: Greece is “turning the corner” as steps taken to fight its debt crisis start paying dividends, the country’s prime minister has said. “Today is the first time when I can look to the future with more optimism,” George Papandreou told members of the Institute for International Finance (IIF) in Austria’s capital, Vienna, on Friday. “We have taken difficult decisions, tough but necessary decisions, and we are now witnessing the first signs that we are turning the corner.” After accumulating massive public debt and overspending, Greece avoided a default last month through the first instalment of a 110 billion euro ($131bn) rescue package from its 15 euro currency partners and the International Monetary Fund. Benni not surprised by selection

Benni disappointed but not surprised All-time leading Bafana Bafana goalscorer Benni McCarthy expressed disappointment after missing the cut for the final 23-man Fifa World Cup™ squad announced on Tuesday, but added he was not surprised. The West Ham United striker, who has has represented his country on 79 occasions with 32 goals to his credit, was one of the five local players who failed to survive Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira’s final snip for the world football showpiece starting in just under 10 days. Following the squad announcement, McCarthy’s management team was quick to release a statement saying that though he is disappointed, he understands the pragmatic reasoning behind the decision. McCarthy was recalled to national duty despite lingering concerns over his fitness and Parreira had hoped the player would improve given his international experience and goal-scoring prowess. Ultimately is was down to the cold, hard realisation that the player could not meet the standards required in the five key selection principles — physical condition, technical ability, tactical ability, discipline and team dynamics. To this end, McCarthy admitted there was very little the national selectors could do but leave him out. “My fitness level came into question after weeks recovering from my knee injury, but the coach still believed in me, as did I and the rest of the team, and I am grateful for that,” said McCarthy. Together with the technical team McCarthy worked hard on his physical fitness, but unfortunately time became his nemesis. “No one’s place in the final squad is a given,” said McCarthy. “We all gave it our best and pushed ourselves to our limits to make the cut. In the end it comes down to a head count. I am proud to have been given the privilege to have been capped in the South African national squad, but unfortunately this time it was not to be.” McCarthy, a Uefa Champions League winner with FC Porto, had some words of consolation for the other four who missed out. “All the players who made the national call-up should be proud. We did not fail we just didn’t make the final 23; we are still a part of the team if not the squad. “We have a strong team everyone will be proud of and I am in no doubt we will make our mark with the ground swell of support the team has been receiving of late. If the carnival spirit of the Super 14 semifinal and final is a measure of the united support we are to expect for Bafana, then I see us excelling. My role now is to join in that support,” he said.
