‘Real Steel’ Stars, Director Knock Out Misconceptions

‘It’s more ‘Rocky’ than it is Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em [Robots],’ director Shawn Levy tells MTV News of early skeptics. By Kara Warner Hugh Jackman in “Real Steal” Photo: DreamWorks For those who’ve been following the comings and goings of “Real Steel,” it’s a pretty well-known fact that when the project was first announced back in late 2009, the Internets lit up with comments and rants against the studio for green-lighting a Rock ‘Em Sock Em Robots movie. And while everyone is entitled to their own opinion, the problem with that perception, according to the stars and director themselves, is that it’s incorrect. “A lot people [say], ‘What is it, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots?’ But it’s got a lot of heart,” Hugh Jackman told MTV News at the film’s premiere. “This movie is really about the relationships of everyone involved, and I think it’s going to surprise people. I saw it with my mother-in-law, my wife and my kids at the same screening, and they all were crying at one point, laughing, and they really got into it.” Director Shawn Levy admitted that he wasn’t bothered so much by the quick critiques as he was amused, because they were analyzing elements of the film they hadn’t seen and a script they obviously hadn’t read. “It’s more ‘Rocky’ than it is Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em. It’s all about the heart, it’s all about the characters,” Levy explained. “The action is great, and if you’re a young guy and you just want to come and watch robots wail on each other, great, you’re going to love it. But if you’re looking for more of an emotional experience, the movie is very much that.” Evangeline Lilly took the emotional aspect of the plot one step further and explained the film’s overall message. “I think the moral message here is: Never give up on yourself. Never sell out. Selling out is such a big thing nowadays, because our culture is so materialistic and money is everything, and in this film, this beautiful little boy played by Dakota [Goyo] will not sell out, and his father wants to, because his father, Hugh Jackman, is kind of pathetic compared to his son,” she explained. “His son is like, ‘Dude, I’m not giving up on myself, I’m not giving up on my robot, I’m not giving up on you.’ It’s beautiful, because it’s supposed to be the inverse; the father is supposed to say that to the son. So it kind of breaks your heart to see a son redeem his father.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Real Steel.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Alien’ Prequel Turns Into Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’

‘While ‘Alien’ was indeed the jumping-off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology,’ director tells Deadline. By Kara Warner Ridley Scott Photo: 20th Century Fox Ever since news broke that Ridley Scott would be revisiting his famous “Alien” franchise in the form of a prequel, the Internets have been a buzzing with rumors, analysis, etc. There have been a slew of actors and writers rumored to be attached to the film , including Keanu Reeves and Natalie Portman, writer John Spaihts and a rewrite from “Lost” genius Damon Lindelof. What we know so far is that the film will be set 30 years prior to the original “Alien,” and on Friday (January 14) came word that it isn’t so much a prequel as something “more original,” according to a Deadline report. The film has an official title, “Prometheus,” and release date, March 9, 2012. Swedish actress Noomi Rapace (“Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) has signed on to star as Elizabeth Shaw, one of two female leads. The rest of the cast is said to be filled out “soon,” with Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron both said to be interested in jumping on Scott’s expectedly epic return to sci-fi filmmaking. Scott once told MTV News that he “avoided sequels, unless [he] felt there was something fresh,” and judging from what he’s doing with “Prometheus,” the new film will be just that. “While ‘Alien’ was indeed the jumping-off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place,” he said. “The keen fan will recognize strands of ‘Alien’ ‘s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.” Lindelof said what lured him in was Scott’s original vision for the film: “It’s daring, visceral and, hopefully, the last thing anyone expects,” he said, adding that working with the Oscar winner is a dream come true. “When I sat in a movie theater as a kid, feet raised off the floor for fear that something might grab my ankles, I never dreamed in my wildest imagination I would one day get to collaborate with the man responsible for it. Working alongside him has been nothing short of a dream come true.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

It’s official: Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are make out buddies. And now that there is physical evidence, Justin Bieber fans are none too pleased. Beliebers are not so much into sharing their beloved Bieber, as celebrities like Kim Kardashian know. Nicki Minaj Makes Colorful Entrance On VMA Pre-Show

Spacesuit-clad Young Money honey performs ‘Your Love,’ ‘Check It Out’ with will.i.am in solo TV debut. By Gil Kaufman Nicki Minaj performs during the 2010 VMA pre-show Photo: MTV News When you’re making a live solo performance debut on TV, you have to make it count. And Young Money honey Nicki Minaj is not one to pull up short . Which explains why she poured herself into a pink-and-purple spacesuit topped by a cotton candy-colored wig for the MTV VMA pre-show run of her new single, “Check it Out.” Accompanied by two dancers in matching outfits, Nicki stood stock still like a futuristic superhero for the song’s intro, then began to wiggle her world-famous hips over the song’s sample of the iconic MTV launch-pad tune “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Tossing in some high kicks and plenty of looks at her ample assets, Minaj held onto a railing ringing the stage and shook it slow as guest will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas strutted out to drop his verse. Dressed like a bondage cartoon character from the phantom zone, Will kicked it in a skin-hugging black leather suit with a Devo-like plastic high-top fade and white shades, pulsing back and forth alongside Minaj as the crowd shouted out their approval. “Dummies can’t touch me ’cause I’m floatin’ sky-high,” he rapped, as Nicki wore a sneer on her face and dropped into a double-time island patois with her hand on her hips. “The DunDun/ Yep, in London,” she rapped, shaking her head. “Competition/ Why yes I would love some.” But by the time she ended with a grimace frozen on her face, it was clear that Minaj had blown away any and all comers and set the stage for the night of unforgettable performances to come. What did you think of Nicki’s solo debut TV performance at the VMAs? Tell us in the comments! The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards are happening live, right now at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles!
