Kim Kardashian has taken to her official website to clarify excerpts from a recent interview with The Guardian in which she appeared to compare her televised wedding to a cancer diagnosis . Going into a bit more detail about the time she spent with a girl who was unfortunately diagnosed with this disease, Kim made it clear : “In no way was I comparing my own experiences to that of a cancer patient. I was merely talking about how there are times in your life, and everyone goes through them, when you find out who loves you enough to stand by you through thick and thin.” We’ll grant Kardashian a mulligan on this one, especially considering how she’s been affected by the tragic illness. “Many of you know that my father passed away from cancer, and my grandma is a cancer survivor,” Kim adds. “This is a disease that has brought so much pain and heartache to our family and I would never want to offend or upset anyone who was battling cancer, or whose family members were battling or had passed away from cancer. “What I said in the interview was misconstrued and I wanted to explain to you all what the context was around my phone call with this girl.” Perhaps Kardashian should stick to bikini photos .
Lizzy Caplan and Adam Scott haven’t hung up their pink bow ties just yet. Although cult hit Party Down has been off the air for two years, fans of the show split their time between making Party Downton ( Party Down + Downton Abbey ) memes and petitioning for a film. And while there have been mini-reunions on Children’s Hospital and web series Burning Love , none compare to Lizzy Caplan and Adam Scott’s team-up as feuding former couple, Gena and Clyde, in Bachelorette , in limited release now. Movieline chatted with the reunited pair, discovering that Caplan basically wrote Scott’s character into the film, and what the duo thinks Henry and Casey (their Party Down counterparts) are doing at this very second. Bachelorette originated as a Leslye Headland’s off-Broadway play, and you had worked with her before, Lizzy. Did you get Adam on board? LIZZY CAPLAN: [Adam and I] saw the play together because me and Jessica Elbaum, one of the producers of Bachelorette , hired Leslye to write a pilot for us. And so we were all in New York and we went to check it out. And then about a year later, we found out they were doing this movie. Adam’s character is not in the play, but I said he would be opposite me and it would really help me out if my buddy could join me and make me look good on camera. And he said yes! Did you actually craft the character of Clyde for him, or did you two collaborate? CAPLAN: No. It was in the feature version always, but I think everybody was allowed to bring their own flavor to it. It felt like you two were the heart of the movie. Do you think your history made it easier to convey Gena and Clyde’s chemistry and relationship in general? CAPLAN: I remember talking to Leslye about how… I mean, every year, the fan base for Party Down grows, so when we started shooting this movie, we were starting to get sort of this cult following. So for this segment of the population, seeing the two of us on screen, you just get that added history without us having to do anything. But a lot of people still haven’t seen Party Down , so, I don’t think it’s going to piss too many people off. I think people are most excited to see us on screen together because they still feel like they’re in this little tiny insular secret club that knows about Party Down . Megan Mullally spilled the beans about the status of the Party Down movie, claiming you aim to start filming early next spring. Do you have any updates? ADAM SCOTT: You know, we’re all just crossing our fingers that it will start… anytime? I don’t know about spring or summer, but that would be great! We’re all just kind of crossing our fingers and hoping that at some point we’ll make the movie. But there’s no news as of right now. Where do you imagine Henry and Casey are now? Would they be anything like your characters in Bachelorette ? CAPLAN: Well, hopefully they wouldn’t be anything like our characters in Bachelorette . They have a happy ending, kind of! CAPLAN: Yeah, I guess they do. But when I think about the next day after Bachelorette , I don’t know what happens to these two people. I don’t really see them making it work necessarily — they’re both too screwed up. And with the [ Party Down ] movie, I mean, the thing with our relationship in that show is that you could have us together, like in the first season, or you could have us apart for the first few bits of it like in the second season, and it sort of always works. So I don’t even really have a preference there. SCOTT: I don’t know! It’s up to John Enbom and Dan Etheridge and Rob Thomas, the guys that write the show. Whatever they come up with is usually sort of the best way to go. I actually think about it probably more than I should because they are fictional characters that do not exist, but I think of them a lot. What do you think they’re doing right now? SCOTT: Hmm… I wonder what they’re doing right now… CAPLAN: Napping. SCOTT: Napping. They’re always napping. CAPLAN: They’re napping. SCOTT: I think that if there’s ever a Party Down movie, everyone else will be catering, and Henry and Casey will be napping. CAPLAN: I think that works. I think maybe you could sprinkle three to four naps in one feature film! SCOTT: It could be great! Adam was on Burning Love , but Lizzy, you were one of the only former cast members who didn’t pop in… CAPLAN: I think they’re doing another season of that, and they know like I’m soooo down to do it. I don’t know what I was doing at the time — you’ll have to ask Ken ‘ASSHOLE’ Marino about that. Would you two like to keep doing films together even if this Party Down thing doesn’t happen for a couple of years? SCOTT: Ugh! [Scoffs] CAPLAN: [Laughs] think we are both fans of working together, and we try to give it a little time between projects so people aren’t sick of us. Or Adam. So people aren’t sick of Adam. SCOTT: Um, yeah. I… I don’t know. I thought I liked working with Lizzy, and then we did this movie and it was just like, ugh . [Feigns disgust] Shut up! Just SHUT UP! CAPLAN: Well, somebody’s got to talk. You would not believe how quiet this man can get and for how long he can do it for. SCOTT: Ugh! [Feigns disgust again] CAPLAN: You’d probably get to ask like two or three questions if Adam wasn’t on the other phone right now, because, Jesus! SCOTT: But that all being said, yeah. If Lizzy could be in everything that I do, I would be all the better for it. So, hopefully we can do lots of other stuff. CAPLAN: What a nice guy. Oh, he’s going to come across as so sweet in this interview. SCOTT: Incorrect. That is not the thing! But honestly, congrats to both of you — Bachelorette held steady as the #1 rental on iTunes up until its release. Do you think it will make more people go see it in theaters or do you think more will see it at home? CAPLAN: It will be interesting to see. I think everybody’s kind of waiting to see the answer to that question — if this dissuades people from going to the theater or not. But if you’re going to release something on Video On Demand, you want it to be number one! So we’re all pretty happy about it. SCOTT: I think it will help with theatrical. You know, it basically serves as a really, really great marketing tool … It kind of just appeared on iTunes and On Demand and did really, really well. So I think all it shows is that there’s a lot of interest for it, [and] I feel like it will do really well. CAPLAN: I’m seeing people tweeting and stuff about how they watch it more than one time. And it’s a much different experience to see a comedy in your house than it is to see it in an auditorium full of people. So I’m hoping people want to have that experience. SCOTT: An auditorium? Are people seeing movies in auditoriums? CAPLAN: I tend to watch my movies in church basement auditoriums. SCOTT: I like ’em in cafeterias. CAPLAN: Oh, you do? I didn’t know that about you! So much more cool. I think they’re broadcasting Bachelorette in public now — in Central Park. That’s where it will go next. I think it’s a great movie for kids to see outside! This movie is a great influence on kids, after all. CAPLAN: I totally agree. I’m gonna put a call in right after we finish up here about showing it to children in a park. Adam, you have kids, so you should show it to them really soon. CAPLAN: Take ’em to the park, Adam, and show them the movie! SCOTT: I think it would be great to show this movie to small children. It’s perfect for them. Bachelorette is in limited theaters. Despite what some celebrity gossip sources (cough, Us Weekly ) would like you to believe, Emily Maynard and Jef Holm are so totally not on the rocks. On Good Morning America today, The Bachelorette couple put on a united front … which is probably just their actual front. They’re totes in love. “It’s crazy,” Jef said of reports that Emily Maynard was sexting some other man. “That’s just tabloid stuff … rumors written about us and it’s not true.” “Emily and I are so happy. We’re great, we’re in love and we’re happy.”
Jay-Z appears on the cover of the upcoming New York Times Style Magazine. In this week’s issue, which should be hitting your doorstep this Sunday, Jay-Z talks with the publication about growing up Hip-Hop. At 42 years of age, Jay-Z is one of the few transcendent artists in 2012 that has grown up with his genre… Continue
Frankly, Frank Ocean even has the gay community talking. While much of the hoopla behind Frank Ocean’s coming out has died down for the hip-hop community, many who are less aware of who he is as an artist have now turned their attention to the significance of his “Thank You” letter that was published shortly before his album debuted this Summer, and it’s meaning for the LGBT community. The subject garnered a long and insightful feature entitled “The Meaning Of Frank Ocean,” which was scribed by one of our contributing writers, Terrance Dean , in the latest issue of The Advocate magazine. (It’s kind of a big deal to have a black man on the cover of The Advocate too). It’s really long but definitely discussion worthy, so we’ve excerpted key portions below: “It was sheer joy because he was the first national well-known artist to come out and announce his sexuality,” says Lloyd Thurston “Gyant” Dinwiddie, referring to Ocean as the first black artist to come out to a hip-hop audience. “Frank Ocean is cemented in music history forever. Anyone who has walked in the LGBT shoes knows that story. His message related to people, and for him it was a weight lifted off his shoulder.” July 4, 2012, marked a declaration of freedom for 24-year-old R&B soul singer Ocean. It was his coming-out party, and we’d all been invited to the virtual parade. His image, that of a serious-looking, handsome young man with a strong jaw line, a short beard, and a short fade haircut, was circulating along with his letter. Those who hadn’t previously heard of Ocean quickly learned that his announcement was significant, and especially significant to watchers of hip-hop. But it wasn’t a shock to everyone. “I was like, What’s the big deal? It’s not like we all don’t know homosexuality exists and has its place in hip-hop,” says Reggie Osse, entertainment attorney, author, former TV executive, and host of The Combat Jack Show. Osse has represented artists including Damon Dash, Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Puffy, and DMX. He was instrumental in helping Jay-Z secure his first recording deal. “I was really happy that Frank Ocean took his life and career into his own hands and made his proclamation,” says Osse. “It’s the first announcement of someone making a statement willingly. But let’s not act like this doesn’t exist.” Before long music celebrities including Russell Simmons, Solange Knowles, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, and Beyoncé began tweeting and posting messages of support for Ocean. Even Odd Future member Tyler the Creator, who’s well-known for his use of the word “fa**ot,” tweeted how proud he was of his brother and friend. It seemed as if the hip-hop industry, which has notoriously been a closed boys’ club that shuns and ostracizes gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people, had experienced a change of heart. Hadn’t Jay-Z, a towering figure in hip-hop, just recently announced his support of marriage equality, following a message of support by President Obama? Jay-Z had seemingly just given Ocean a pass and ushered him into the boys’ club. And not from afar: Ocean had written and performed on Jay-Z and Kanye West’s hip-hop album Watch the Throne. “I’m surprised that a lot of young gay people flocked to him, like he was doing something big,” says gay rapper Deadlee. “My first reaction was like he didn’t do anything. It didn’t seem to me like it was that big of a deal. But then I did research and discovered he was a part of Odd Future, and Tyler the Creator, who is always saying ‘fa**ot this’ and ‘fa**ot that.’ I was like, Whoa! This dude [Ocean] never checked him. Maybe they knew the whole time, and they were taking the word back and not tripping on it.” Reggie Osse, describing homophobia in hip-hop, says, “I had a conversation with rapper Lil B last year. We were talking about the changing values thematically and what these new rappers are doing. However, the old-guard rappers are like Republicans and want things to stay the same. Whereas hip-hop is changing, and many who are born in this culture are taking it to another place. There are some old-school cats who want to keep rap conservative. Some of my friends who are in hip-hop are very adamant that there is no place for gays. They begin quoting the Bible, and they are coming from an antiquated way of thinking.” “I believe in…one’s right to be free,” says legendary rapper MC Lyte. “When we as a community, be it African American, the entertainment industry, or just the block, allow someone’s sexual, political, or religious preference to cloud our ability to see their true spirit, we lose. We lose the opportunity to fully embrace another one of God’s children. Truthfully, no matter how much an individual would love to point out the differences between themselves and another, we are all one.” Ocean may have received support by some influential hip-hop figures. But the list of artists who were not willing to discuss him for this article is revealing. B.o.B., Lupe Fiasco, Trey Songz, Jaheim, and Wiz Khalifa declined to discuss the subject. The representatives for Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott, and Nicki Minaj said their clients were busy and unavailable for comment. “I’m an advocate for those in my family and those who I am close to, and I am an advocate for the homosexual community,” says rapper Murs who recently released a shocking music video for his single “Animal Style.” Both the single and video feature a young man as he struggles with his sexual orientation, and portray the conflict he feels as he begins to date another man. Murs plays his boyfriend. In the video, the two men share a kiss. He explains that he spoke with his wife prior to making the video, and she fully supported him and the concept. Murs faced significant opposition in making the song. “I wanted to do this song for five years, and for five years producers did not want to touch the song,” he says. “They didn’t want to be associated with the subject matter. However, those same producers are now calling me and supporting me and saying they are proud of me.” Murs says he did the video and song to let his gay friends, associates, and fellow rappers know that he was aware of their being closeted and that he still cared for them. “I wanted to give them their moment and let them know that the door is open and I am going to take a stance for them,” Murs says. “And I think with artists like Jay-Z, Frank Ocean, and myself, homophobia in hip-hop will disappear. “Teenagers are killing themselves,” he continues. “We have to stop this because people are losing their lives and getting beat to death. It makes me extremely sad. I can’t watch children die.” Ocean has largely refused to do interviews on this subject, and even in his interview in the British newspaper The Guardian, he doesn’t address the issue of labels. “A lot of people were giving Frank Ocean props and saying that he was letting everyone come into his world, as opposed to coming out,” Deadlee says. “In his letter he never used the word ‘gay,’ and this guy is getting more props for not even using the word or even identifying in his letter. I’m gay and I’m not afraid to use the word. I hope that Frank Ocean comes to the point of not being afraid to use the ‘gay’ word.” Though he doesn’t give his sexual orientation a label in the letter, Ocean does describe relationships with women. “Frank Ocean never said he was gay or bisexual, he just said he was in love with a man,” says Ebony Utley, an assistant professor in communication studies at California State University, Long Beach. “It was others who needed to identify and label him instead of him, and allowing him to do it for himself. Let’s let the man define himself… Besides, he was wise not to say anything beyond his letter, and that’s what he needed to sell his record.” Though the declarations of support for Ocean by 50 Cent and Jay-Z were a milestone in hip-hop, Utley notes, “Frank Ocean is an R&B singer. Let’s be clear, hip-hop hasn’t had its first openly gay artist. No rapper has come out. Honestly, we don’t know what the support will be for an openly gay rapper because one has not come out.” Singer-rapper-songwriter Meshell Ndegeocello wasn’t ashamed to speak about her bisexuality. She was one of the first artists to be signed to Madonna’s record label, Maverick Records, in 1992. Her latest album, Pour une Ame Souveraine: A Dedication to Nina Simone, is due out October 9. On Ndegeocello’s controversial single “Leviticus: Fa**ot,” she spoke candidly about a young man discovering his homosexuality and the rejection from his family. Though a few brave artists have come out, rising above homophobia will require significant effort from the R&B and hip-hop communities, both gay and straight. Ndegeocello acknowledges the difficulty: “I think it’s harder for men,” she says. “Men need a movement. It’s harder to be black, gay, and male. It makes me have the utmost respect for black gay men in an industry of hypermasculinity.” For several years hip-hop has been described as being at a tipping point with regard to homophobia, yet the toppling of a pervasive attitude has yet to be achieved. Frank Ocean hasn’t yet said what it means to be Frank Ocean, but with each significant coming-out, the haters have less standing to insist that LGBTs have no place in hip-hop. What do you think? Did Frank Ocean open the door to gay hip-hop artists being accepted if they come out of the closet, or will it be years before a gay rapper can be open and successful? Please discuss! Christina Aguilera talks at length about her enviable booty in Lucky magazine this month. Immediately upon hearing this, we subscribed to that publication. Proud to be bootylicious, the 31-year-old pop star and Voice judge loves her curves, which have certainly evolved since the early days of her career. Evolved in a good way, according to the singer. “Actually, the challenge I’ve always had is being too thin, so I love that now I have a booty, and obviously I love showing my cleavage,” she confesses. The singer also encourages curvy girls to flaunt their figures: “Hey, if you can work it and you can own it, that confidence is going to shine through.” Aguilera’s eclectic sense of style is on full display in her spaceship-esque chair on NBC. “I have always loved dressing up, being theatrical,” she says. Mission accomplished, Xtina. Well done. Check out how she dressed up for Lucky by clicking to enlarge some more Christina Aguilera pictures below …
Nina Dobrev is featured in the October issue of Seventeen , going into detail with the magazine on a number of important issues, from sexual abuse to Ian Somerhalder to Harry Potter. Click through photos of The Vampire Diaries below and then read through excerpts of her interview… On her character in The Perks Of Being A Wallflower : “It’s a really heavy topic, and I hope my character gives girls some perspective. I think more than anything, girls allow abuse to happen because they’re embarrassed it happened and that they allowed it to happen. They know it’s not right. There’s no excuse for it. That’s why it’s so important to show girls that they can admit that it’s not their fault.” On dating a costar : “My goal on the show was to be professional. But sometimes you can’t help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long – which I did for a really, really long time.” On her love for a certain boy wizard : “I want to go to Harry Potter Land! I actually should text Emma Watson to see if she can hook us up with a backstage pass or something.” On dealing with fame : “I try not to read best-dressed lists or anything like that. For every good thing, there will often be a not-so-nice thing people would say.” The Vampire Diaries Season 4 premieres on October 11.
