This clip is just painful to watch. In an interview with Martin Short on The Today Show this morning, Kathie Lee Gifford asked the actor about his kids and their occupations – and then thought she was being complimentary by adding: “And you and Nancy have one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business. How many years now for you guys?” The extremely awkward problem, however, is that Short’s wife passed away from ovarian cancer in 2010. Watch the exchange now to see how well Short handled the questions related to him and Nancy. Kathie Lee Gifford Interview with Martin Short Gifford Tweeted not long after the interview aired: “I send my sincerest apologies to Martin Short and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.”
Jesus take the serpent… Virginia Pentecostal Pastor Dies From Rattlesnake Bite Mid-Service A “serpent-handling” West Virginia pastor died after his rattlesnake bit him during a church ritual, just as the man had apparently watched a snake kill his father years before. Pentecostal pastor Mark Wolford, 44, hosted an outdoor service at the Panther Wildlife Management Area in West Virginia Sunday, which he touted on his Facebook page prior to the event. “I am looking for a great time this Sunday,” Wolford wrote May 22, according to the Washington Post. “It is going to be a homecoming like the old days. Good ‘ole raised in the holler or mountain ridge running, Holy Ghost-filled speaking-in-tongues sign believers.” Robin Vanover, Wolford’s sister, told the Washington Post that 30 minutes into the outdoor service, Wolford passed around a poisonous timber rattlesnake, which eventually bit him. “He laid it on the ground,” Vanover said in the interview, “and he sat down next to the snake, and it bit him on the thigh.” Vanover said Wolford was then transported to a family member’s home in Bluefield about 80 miles away to recover. But as the situation worsened, he was taken to a hospital where he later died. Image via Kate Fowler Source
D’Angelo Talks About The Frustrations Of Fame And Why He Hates The Term Neo-Soul We recently shared parts of D’Angelo’s first interview in 12 years, and loved it so much that we were thrilled to find out GQ had published more outtakes from the interview online that didn’t make the print issue. Here are a few excerpts below: On fighting fame after Brown Sugar and hating the term ‘neo soul’: D’Angelo looks back on that time with some discomfort. A perfectionist, he wishes he’d had more of an active interplay with the audience. But it all took off so fast, he says. He was confused, he says, by his sudden notoriety, even as he, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and others were credited with launching the “neo-soul” movement (a label he hates). “It counteracts the very fawking idea of what it was in the first place,” he says. “It’s black music thinking — it’s black music manifested outside of the box. And when you label it neo soul, you’re putting it right back in the box. How about you just call me soul music?” That argument was just one of many D was having in his own head. “I tried to fight, I guess, what typically fame quote-unquote does to people,” he says. “I didn’t want to stop being, you know, the rambunctious mug that I was, because that’s what made my music what it was. It happens to the best of them, you know: At some point in everyone’s career, it was like the music lost its bite. I’m like, ‘Well, how do you avoid that?’” On what it was like for D to perform in Stockholm in January, his first concert in more than a decade: “It was scary,” D will tell me later, reflecting on playing the guitar in public for the first time. “I would feel comfortable when I was by myself, but actually getting onstage and playing was a different thing. My friend Raphael Saadiq was like, ‘Yo, man, you’ve just got to jump in. Start swimming. Just jump in the pool, you know?’ It was good advice. I was nervous up until the point where we started playing and singing, and then it just felt—it felt cool.” On D’s upcoming third album: Despite assurances that it’s 97-percent done, D hasn’t locked his third. Not yet. In Europe, he unveiled several songs he thinks will be on it. In addition to “Ain’t That Easy” and the irresistible dance number, “Sugar Daddy,” there is a song Questlove compares to Herbie Hancock called “The Charade.” “Crawling through a systematic maze to demise,” it begins, and D sings the line with a seething fury. When I catch a reference to “the deceiver,” I can’t help but think: this song—twisted, almost atonal, multi-layered—is about that forked-tongued devil, Fame. D says I’m wrong. “It’s about the disenfranchised,” he says. “It’s telling the powers that be, ‘This is why we are justified in our stance.’ There’s another song on the album called ‘A Thousand Deaths’ that is the flip side of the coin. ‘A Thousand Deaths’ is just a fucking war cry. You know what I mean? The beheadings have commenced.” It occurs to me that the Nat Turner Rebellion of 1831, in which slaves rose up and killed more than 50 white people, the only sustained slave rebellion in the South’s history, took place in D’s home state of Virginia. “Ain’t no justice/It’s just us/Ash to ashes/Dust to dust,” D sang so insistently on Voodoo. I am beginning to get what he means. I ask someone who has a closely-guarded copy to let me hear “1000 Deaths.” It is dark, dense and mysterious and makes the most of D’s newfound prowess on the guitar. The lead vocal is so distorted—like the moans and groans of a Negro spiritual—that D could almost be speaking in tongues. The song is compelling, maybe even profound, but it is the opposite of catchy. That’s just fine with D. He tells me art, not commerce, is his fuel. This sounds so dope. We can’t wait to hear D’s new album! Photo credit: Gregory Harris/GQ

And this writer couldn’t be happier to sit back and let the ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ duo share a moment. By Adam Murphy Bill Murray and Wes Anderson Photo: MTV News CANNES, France — Sitting across from “Moonrise Kingdom” filmmaker Wes Anderson, decked out in a corduroy suit on the beaches of the French Riviera during the Cannes Film Festival, I can’t help but ask about his relationship with his muse (and my personal hero), Bill Murray. Anderson feels around for the words to adequately characterize their connection, which has developed over the course of six films. “Bill is the kind of guy,” he begins, “There aren’t that many people you could turn to if there was a mob and say, ‘Please, guide them this way or that way.’ ” Just then, a voice off camera distracts Anderson. The voice remarks how great the “Moonrise Kingdom” premiere party was the previous night. “Yes it was, it was,” Anderson responds. “We were literally in the middle of me speculating about what you get out of this experience of working together.” At this point, I realize Bill Murray is standing just over my left shoulder. “I was going to go on,” Anderson says to Murray, “but then I thought maybe it’s better if you just say.” It occurs to me that this is actually happening: Bill Murray is crashing my interview with Wes Anderson. Looking more like he’s on vacation than promoting a film, Murray joins Anderson on camera. I take my cue to sit back and watch. “It’s really fun, and I do feel that I am sort of in the center, because I’ve been in [Anderson’s films] a long time,” Murray says. “And I welcome others to come in, and I try to inform them of the rules of the place and how they have to behave. And the great thing is that the kid [Anderson] keeps getting better and better. … I’m so proud of what he does now and how much fun he’s having doing it. Because that’s the reason I do it, ’cause I have fun doing it. And he’s really done an excellent job of instructing others how to have fun and make it a real adventure to play.” “Pretty good, pretty good!” Anderson says. “Yeah, for just waking up!” Murray replies. After this moment of sincere, shared admiration, Anderson asks, “Can I hug him on MTV News?” Who am I to stop them? I look back to the camera to make sure this is real. After their embrace, Anderson compliments the longhorn skull on the sleeve of Murray’s polo shirt. There’s some discussion of meeting on a boat later. I immediately get the impression that these two are as close as we all like to think they are. I imagine the two of them taking turns playing old 45s for each other by lantern light in a tent in the living room. And then he was gone. Anderson acknowledges that his moment with Murray ate up a bunch of my interview time, a point so ludicrous it actually proves what an earnest guy he is. Someone tells me I’ve still got a couple of minutes left with him. How do I possibly follow that? ‘I still love her as a human being,’ MTV Movie Awards host tells Ellen DeGeneres. By Jocelyn Vena Russell Brand and Katy Perry Photo: Charley Gallay/ WireImage Russell Brand has only the kindest words for his pop-star ex, Katy Perry. The actor chatted with Ellen DeGeneres on an episode of her talk show airing Thursday (May 17), and when asked about the split, Brand said that while they are no longer together, he still loves and respects her. “I still love her as a human being,” the comedian said. “But sometimes when you’re in a relationship, I suppose it doesn’t work out, does it? But that doesn’t mean I regret it or anything. I was very happy to be married with her. She’s such a beautiful human being and I just have only love and positivity for her. “You can’t absolutely make everything the way you want it to be in life,” he added. “Sometimes things are just different and then you have to just move with that and try and remain in contact with what is beautiful about yourself and with each other with any situation.” Brand and Perry announced their split in December 2011, after a year of marriage. During the interview, he added that she’s “a person I still consider to be beautiful. … I have nothing but positivity for her. She is [an amazing person].” The actor/comedian is now poised for a busy June. Brand is set to host the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , which will air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre on Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. This marks the third time he’s hosted an MTV awards show, having hosted the Video Music Awards in 2008 and 2009. Admiral General Aladeen also confesses to the murders of Tupac and Biggie Smalls during MTV News interview. By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Sacha Baron Cohen as the Dictator at 2012 Cannes Film Festival Photo: Getty Images “Welcome! Death to the West!” That is how the Dictator greeted MTV News’ Josh Horowitz when he sat down with him for an interview. latest infamous character is Admiral General Aladeen, a dictator who oppresses his people and dislikes democracy. In “The Dictator,” he’s mistaken for a refugee and taken under the wing of Zoey, played by Anna Faris . Aladeen’s misadventures in America lead to an array of hilarious culture clashes. Thus, the interview was nothing less than we’d expect — offensive, outrageous and, yes, very, very funny. After inquiring about Horowitz’s knowledge of the rapper Tupac Shakur, the Dictator reveals it was him who killed the MC. “He came to play at my birthday party and all the time he get on the microphone, and you know what he tell me?” Aladeen questioned. “You know what he tell me? He said, ‘Put your hands’ — he ordered me! — he ordered me to put my hands in the air and wave them like I just don’t care. Why would I, Dictator, wave my hands like I don’t care? I wave my hands like I do care, like this. I don’t do it like I don’t care. How dare he come to my palace and my birthday and tell me how to wave my hands like I don’t care? I care about the hands!” Apparently someone forgot to inform the tyrant that it’s a figure of speech here in America. “To put your hands in the air like you don’t care?” he continued. “You think Hitler put his hands in the air like he don’t care? It was a very careful gesture that he did. I won’t do it here. And this Biggie Smalls, he then performed the next night for my weekend of birthday. That fat bastard ate all of the buffet. It cost over 120 Euros per head.” When our correspondent noted that his phrase is not respectful to the dead, the admiral general replied, “It’s not respectful to the people who wanted to eat the buffet.” Note to self: Eat before heading to Aladeen’s palace. Although, it’s possible not much eating will take place on a trip to his home. Shortly after assuring Horowitz he has nothing to worry about and sliding a gun on the table between them, he talked of his latest tryst with reality-TV star Kim Kardashian. “I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of [stars in America] that come to the palace and negotiate with the pimps,” he said. “Kim Kardashian, she came two weeks ago. I negotiated with her pimp, who is also her mother. Three-hundred-thousand dollars for one hour — not bad. Good rate.” But Kardashian isn’t the only American entertainer the Dictator is fond of. He happens to enjoy Snooki and has a list of movies he’s enjoyed — one of which is definitely in the wrong category. “I am a huge supporter of your Snooki,” he said. “I find him a very funny, little, orange man. And we have many of your sci-fi and fantasy films like ‘Transformers’ or ‘Harry Potter’ or ‘Schindler’s List.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dictator.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
